Whether he’s on a stage doing stand-up, voicing an animated character, or just having fun on Twitter, Patton Oswalt is a hilariously funny guy. But, at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF), he was honored with a Virtuoso Award for his dramatic work as Matt Freehauf in Young Adult, directed by Jason Reitman and written by Diablo Cody. Collider was there to cover and attend the event, and we’ve compiled the highlights of what the actor had to say, both on the press line and during the Q&A.

While there, Patton Oswalt talked about what the whole award season experience has been like for him, the highlight of getting to talk to people that meant something to him growing up, bridging the gap between being a stand-up comic and a successful actor, that he’s taking a few months off even though he’s been getting a lot of offers, and even likened his friendship with Charlize Theron to that of a flight simulator. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

New Images from SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN Featuring Chris Hemsworth and 8 Dwarves

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 30th, 2012 at 12:20 pm

As their respective release dates loom closer, the battle between the two Snow White films is heating up. A new international trailer for Tarsem Singh’s Mirror Mirror was recently released, and today Universal has released two new images from Rupert SandersSnow White and the Huntsman. One of them gives us a peek at a burly Chris Hemsworth flanked by the eight dwarves. Yes, in Snow White and the Huntsman there are eight dwarves (something to do with a rights issue), but they look like a pretty formidable band of warriors here. Sanders assembled a pretty damn impressive roster of actors to play the dwarves, including Nick Frost, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, and Ian McShane.

Hit the jump to check out the images, which also include a new look at Charlize Theron as the evil Queen. I continue to be impressed by what I see from Huntsman, and I’m sincerely hoping that the full film delivers a grand, epic adventure. Snow White and the Huntsman opens June 1st.

First Trailer for Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 22nd, 2011 at 8:44 am

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for Prometheus, a sci-fi project from director Ridley Scott with ties to the Alien series.  Here’s the logline: “The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.”  This is very much a teaser, as it focuses much more on mood than showcasing whole scenes. We don’t even really get a good look at any of the stars, but that’s inconsequential because the trailer does a damn fine job of sending chills down your spine regardless. If there was any doubt about the film’s connection to Alien, that’ll be put to rest after watching this trailer (the title appearance is fantastic). This marks a return not only to the sci-fi genre for Scott, but to horror, and I couldn’t be happier.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, and also Guy Pearce star. Prometheus is scheduled for release on June 8, 2012.

Trailer Preview for Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS [Updated with a Second Preview Trailer]

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 19th, 2011 at 11:11 am

A trailer for the trailer for Ridley Scott’s sci-fi pic Prometheus is now online. It’s a 30 second “trailer preview” for the actual trailer that will be released online this Thursday. It’s pretty similar to the footage we saw at Comic-Con, as it has some behind-the-scenes footage (as well as a tiny bit of actual footage) interspersed with Scott talking about the film on set (though the grainy stylistic flourish is a tad confusing). It ups the horror aspect of the flick, something I was extremely happy with when we saw the Comic-Con footage. As it has connections to Scott’s Alien, it really does look like he’s drawing from the horror tone of that pic instead of simply making a sci-fi actioner. While Scott recently stated that the xenomorph will “absolutely not” appear in Prometheus, I’m excited to see what sort of being will pop up in its place.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer preview, and come back to the site on Thursday to view the full-length trailer. The film stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, and Guy Pearce. Prometheus opens June 8th, 2012. [Update: a second trailer preview has been released that shows even more footage from the film. It's included after the jump.]

YOUNG ADULT Review

“Magical” may be an odd word to describe a dark comedy as intentionally depressing, uncomfortable, and mean as Young Adult.  But there is a magic in watching a writer, a director, and an actor craft a captivating character who keeps the audience guessing to what’s in her head.  In creating Mavis Gary, screenwriter Diablo Cody, director Jason Reitman, and actress Charlize Theron do far more than simply put a mean girl from high school under the magnifying glass.  There’s inarguably a state of arrested development for Mavis, but what keeps her interesting is if she knows how pathetic she really is.  Throughout the movie, I kept wondering, “Does she know she’s deluding herself?  Does she know how much she’s embarrassing herself and is she just trying to ignore it?”  Mavis could have easily turned into a David Brent-type where the obliviousness is both hilarious and cringe-inducing.  Cody, Reitman, and Theron provide a dramatic weight to that obliviousness.  Young Adult only stumbles when the film tries to take a shortcut at the end to force her in a particular direction.  But everything that comes before is a nasty, delightful piece of work

Charlize Theron, Patton Oswalt, and Screenwriter Diablo Cody YOUNG ADULT Interview

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: December 6th, 2011 at 9:12 am

Opening in limited release this weekend is director Jason Reitman’s (Up in the Air) great new movie, Young Adult.  Written by Diablo Cody (Juno), the film centers on an alcoholic young adult novelist (Charlize Theron) who ventures back to her hometown in order to pursue her now-married high school boyfriend (Patrick Wilson).  Patton Oswalt co-stars as Theron’s former classmate.  While Young Adult could have easily taken the familiar steps of “bad person goes home and turns everything around”, I’m happy to report Reitman and Cody have crafted a unique movie that should not be missed.  It’s definitely one of my favorites of the year and I’m pretty sure Theron is going to get a nomination for her portrayal of Mavis Gary.  Watch the trailer here and here’s some clips.

Anyway, I recently got to attend a press conference in New York City with Theron, Oswalt, Cody.  They talked about how the project came together, the idea of going against what we normally see on movie screens, the soundtrack and music from the ’90s, their own high school experiences, actors and directors they really admire, the rehearsal process, and so much more.  Hit the jump to check it out.

3 Clips from Jason Reitman’s YOUNG ADULT Starring Charlize Theron

Three new clips have been released from Up in the Air director Jason Reitman’s new pic Young Adult. Written by Diablo Cody (Juno), the film centers on an alcoholic young adult novelist who ventures back to her hometown in order to pursue her now-married high school boyfriend. Charlize Theron is already turning heads for her nasty performance, and the more I see of the film the more excited I am to see it. Reitman’s a fantastic storyteller and Cody’s script is said to be very, very dark.

Hit the jump to watch the clips. The film also stars Patton Oswalt, Patrick Wilson, and Elizabeth Reaser. Young Adult opens in limited release December 9th and opens nationwide a week later.

New Look at Images from Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS

by Dave Trumbore    Posted: November 30th, 2011 at 6:23 pm

PROMETHEUS-monolith-slice

A week ago, we brought you an early look at scans from Ridley Scott’s new Alien-“prequel” Prometheus. They showed actors Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class) and Logan Marshall-Green (Devil) in their luminescent-collared spacesuits exploring what looked like ruins of an unknown planet. They also showed stars Charlize Theron (Hancock) and Idris Elba (Thor) on the bridge of the eponymous ship. Lording over the explorers in the background was a monolithic face looking down on a field of what appear to be primitive versions of Alien eggs down in the fog. Well now we can show you all of that in more clarity, along with a couple of new images from the film. With clearer images available, a trailer should be right around the corner. Prometheus opens in 3D on June 8th, 2012. Hit the jump to check out the images.

New R-Rated Spot for Jason Reitman’s YOUNG ADULT

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 29th, 2011 at 7:50 am

A new R-rated spot for director Jason Reitman’s Young Adult has gone online. The film stars Charlize Theron as an alcoholic young adult fiction novelist who returns to her hometown in order to pursue her now-married high school boyfriend. This clips proves that Theron’s character is a terrible, terrible human being. It also proves that it’s incredibly fun to watch Theron marvel in the nastiness. I’m a huge fan of Reitman’s work and I’ve been looking forward to this one for a while. The film’s been turning heads in the awards communities (especially Theron and co-star Patton Oswalt’s performances), and I can’t wait to check out this decidedly dark character piece. The fact that Reitman’s Juno scribe Diablo Cody wrote the script doesn’t hurt either.

Hit the jump to check out the spot. The film also stars Patrick Wilson and Elizabeth Reaser. Young Adult opens in limited release on December 9th and expands nationwide a week later.

2012 Oscar Preview: Best Actor and Best Actress

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 25th, 2011 at 7:19 am

Yesterday we unveiled our picks for the top contenders in the Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories for the upcoming 84th Academy Awards. Today, we’re taking on Best Actor and Best Actress. Though it’s still relatively early in the race, we’ve got some surefire contenders and a couple of clear frontrunners for the top acting categories. In addition to Academy darlings like George Clooney and Meryl Streep, we’ve seen some extraordinary performances from relative newcomers likes Elizabeth Olsen and Michael Fassbender. As I stressed yesterday, it’s still pretty early so things can definitely change between now and February, but there are certainly some clear frontrunners in these two races already. Hit the jump to see find out how everyone stacks up.

New Images from Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 22nd, 2011 at 5:51 pm

Director Ridley Scott’s sci-fi pic Prometheus has been shrouded in mystery for some time now, with only one image released and no footage shown to the general public (we got a peek at a sizzle-reel/trailer at Comic-Con). However, all that’s about to change as the first crop of actor-revealing images appear in this week’s EW. We get a look at stars Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender in spacesuits on an unknown planet, a gigantic head statue, and what look to be primitive forms of the eggs seen in Alien. We also get a peek at Charlize Theron and Idris Elba.

Long said to be a prequel to Scott’s sci-fi/horror classic Alien, the director recently revealed that the last eight minutes of Prometheus will “evolve into a pretty good DNA of the Alien one.” With these images getting released this week, a trailer can’t be far behind. I loved what I saw at Comic-Con (it’s much more in the vein of a horror drama like Alien than a bang ‘em up action picture), so I’m very much looking forward to this one. Prometheus opens in 3D on June 8th, 2012.

15 New Images from Jason Reitman’s YOUNG ADULT Starring Charlize Theron, Patrick Wilson, and Patton Oswalt

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 17th, 2011 at 6:08 pm

Director Jason Reitman returns to the big screen this year with Young Adult, and 15 new images from the pic have been released. Written by Juno scribe Diablo Cody, the film stars Charlize Theron as an alcoholic writer of young adult fiction who returns to her hometown in order to pursue her high-school boyfriend (Patrick Wilson) who is now happily married with a child. This film has been picking up high praise lately from advanced screenings, and is sure to be an awards contender when Oscar-time comes. I love the cast (Patton Oswalt stars in a supporting role), and Reitman’s Up in the Air was my favorite pic of 2009, so I’m very much looking forward to seeing the film once it opens.

Hit the jump to check out the images. The film also stars Elizabeth Reaser. Young Adult opens in limited release on December 2nd, with a nationwide expansion set for the following weekend.

New Posters for THE MUPPETS, YOUNG ADULT, and TITANTIC 3D

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 15th, 2011 at 12:05 pm

New posters have been released for The Muppets, Jason Reitman‘s Young Adult, and James Cameron‘s 3D re-release of TitanicThe Muppets ads continue to parody other 2011 movies and this time the target is The Twilight Saga.  If Taylor Lautner was replaced by Rowlf, it would be a dramatic improvement for the series.  The new poster for Young Adult doesn’t hold a candle to the excellent teaser poster, but it does make Charlize Theron look almost as horrifying as she was in Monster.  Finally, I’m not sure why Paramount felt the need to bury Kate Winslet‘s face in Leonardo DiCaprio‘s chest.  The poster is also sorely lacking a sad Billy Zane in the background.

Hit the jump to check out the posters.  The Muppets opens November 23rd.  Young Adult opens in limited release on December 9th before going wide on December 16th.  Titantic opens in 2D and 3D on April 6, 2012.

First Look at Footage from SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN Starring Kristen Stewart

by Dave Trumbore    Posted: November 9th, 2011 at 5:49 pm

The divide between the two Snow White movies is finally starting to widen: the “light comedic adventure” version of Tarsem Sing’s Mirror, Mirror vs. the directorial debut of Rupert Sanders and his dark, gritty interpretation, Snow White and the Huntsman. Today, we have a look at some footage from the latter version. While there’s not a lot of screen time for Snow White (Kristen Stewart) or the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth), we do get a glimpse at the dark side of the Evil Queen (Charlize Theron).

Slated to open on June 1, 2012, Snow White and the Huntsman is a twist on the classic fairy tale in which the Huntsman, appointed to kill Snow White, becomes her protector and joins her in the quest to kill the Evil Queen herself. Hit the jump to check out the footage and check back here tomorrow for the first trailer.
