The cast is really starting to shape up for Kimberley Peirce’s (Boys Don’t Cry) remake of the classic horror film, Carrie. The new adaptation of the Stephen King source novel already features Chloe Moretz in the title role with Julianne Moore playing Carrie’s conservative and controlling mother. Now, it looks like some of Carrie’s classmate tormenters are in the process of being cast, with Ivana Baquero (Pan’s Labyrinth) and Gabriella Wilde (The Three Musketeers) having recently joined. Another addition is Judy Greer (13 Going on 30) who in talks to play the pivotal role of the girls’ gym teacher. It’s not known yet whether the Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Big Love) adaptation will follow Brian De Palma’s original to the letter or if some artistic license will be taken. A couple weeks ago, we reported that Universal was close to green-lighting Kick-Ass 2 written and directed by Jeff Wadlow (Never Back Down), and produced by Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn. At the Kapow! Comic Convention, Wadlow confirmed that shooting would begin in September. However, he added that Chloe Moretz had not officially signed on to reprise her role as Hit-Girl, which may be a bit of a problem since Wadlow had significantly expanded the character’s role from what it was in Mark Millar‘s comic series.
Hit the jump for more on Wadlow’s plans for adapting Kick-Ass 2.

After starring in this weekend’s Dark Shadows, Chloe Grace Moretz may return as one of the undead in the father-daughter zombie film, Maggie. Originally picked up by producer Timur Bekmambetov as a Black List spec script by John Scott 3, Maggie deals with a zombie apocalypse in which the titular 16-year-old becomes infected. The story further deals with the unconditional love of a father for his daughter, as Maggie remains with the family over the six-month course of her transformation. Fittingly, The Walking Dead title/credits designer Henry Hobson will make his directorial debut on this feature. Moretz is in negotiations to play the title role while Paddy Considine (The Bourne Ultimatum) is in talks to play the father. Maggie plans to start production this September. Hit the jump for more on Moretz.

Tim Burton‘s Dark Shadows is a series of flawed assumptions resulting from remarkable incompetence. Burton believes he’s blended a gothic style with a campy comedy, but his film is neither. The characters act at being a bunch of kooky, Addams Family-style misfits, but they’re nothing more than vague, one-dimensional sketches or, in the case of the protagonist, a confused contradiction. Seth Grahame-Smith‘s script thinks it has balanced out the story elements into a compelling narrative, but it’s a poorly plotted mess that eschews character development in favor of a softball joke or clumsy dark humor. With the exception of a great performance from Eva Green, Dark Shadows flails wildly at concocting a strange brew, and only comes up with weak tea.

While comic creator Mark Millar has been touting the “greenlight” for Kick-Ass 2 for years now, it turns out that production may finally get started this year. Deadline reports that Universal is in talks to make a sequel to Matthew Vaughn’s excellent 2010 pic Kick-Ass. Vaughn is currently busy developing a sequel to X-Men: First Class, so Jeff Wadlow will be taking over directing duties this time around. Wadlow, who wrote and directed 2005’s Cry_Wolf and directed the 2008 fighting-centered Never Back Down, wrote the script for Vaughn who I’m assuming will be producing. Hit the jump for more.

With Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows opening May 11, Warner Bros. has provided us with 9 clips and 12 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage from the making of the film. The film stars Johnny Depp as a vampire who awakens in 1972 after having been buried for 200 years and tries to reconnect with his descendants. Dark Shadows also stars Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloe Moretz, Jackie Earle Haley, Gulliver McGrath, Helena Bonham Carter, Bella Heathcote, Ray Shirley, and Jonny Lee Miller.
While the reaction to the last trailer was mixed, I’m excited by everything I’ve seen and think Depp and Burton look like they had a blast bringing their passion project to life. In addition, I’ve spoken to a few people that have seen the movie and all of them have said positive things. Hit the jump to check out the footage and look for new interviews with the cast soon.

Johnny Depp stars as a vampire who awakens in 1972 after having been buried for 200 years and tries to reconnect with his descendants. We’ve seen a couple of these images before, but Warner Bros. also released a number of images of Burton at work on set making artsy hand gestures.

We’ve got a couple of horror related stories to share with you this afternoon. Roger Birnbaum, CEO of MGM, recently gave talks at the University of Denver and he dropped some nuggets of info about a few remakes in the MGM pipeline. Furthest along is the redo of Carrie. Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry) is set to direct and Chloe Moretz is officially onboard in the lead role, first played by Sissy Spacek in the 1976 adaptation of the Stephen King novel. Moreover, Julianne Moore is reportedly in talks to take on the crazy mother role. During the talk at the University of Denver, Birnbaum revealed that some of the film may be done in the found footage style. Hit the jump for more. [Update: Moore has recently been offered the role for Carrie. Sam Raimi will reportedly produce Poltergeist, but won't direct. More after the jump.]

The red band trailer for the adaptation of Andrea Portes’ novel, Hick, is online. The film stars Chloe Moretz as a 13-year-old girl who runs away from home to escape her mom’s alcoholic boyfriends and to seek fame. She crosses paths with a troubled woman played by Blake Lively, and this red band trailer definitely promises something a bit different. The film looks kind of chaotic and more than a little uncomfortable—my mind kept racing between Moretz’s age and how creepy Eddie Redmayne’s character was acting. Directed by Derick Martini, the film screened at the Toronto Film Festival to a less-than-enthusiastic response, with our own Matt Goldberg calling it a “dull, ill-conceived mess” in his review. I’m intrigued enough by this red band clip that I want to see more, so we’ll see how subsequent trailers sell the film.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Juliette Lewis and Alec Baldwin. Hick will be available VOD on May 8th and opens in theaters on May 11th.

With Chloe Moretz set to star in MGM/Screen Gem’s “more faithful” remake of Brian De Palma’s 1976 film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel Carrie (phew!), attention now turns to when the film will be released. According to Box Office Mojo, the targeted release date is set for March 15, 2013, placing the Kimberly Pierce (Boys Don’t Cry) directed film in-between Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful and Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Killer, according to their site. No word yet on who will play Carrie’s evil mother, although both Jodie Foster and Julianne Moore had been approached. Hit the jump for the synopsis.

Warner Bros. has released nine character banners for Tim Burton‘s comedy Dark Shadows. These banners are much better than the character posters, which made the entire cast look like albinos for some reason.
Hit the jump to check out the banners. The film stars Johnny Depp, Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloe Moretz, Jackie Earle Haley, Gulliver McGrath, Helena Bonham Carter, Bella Heathcote, Ray Shirley, and Jonny Lee Miller. Dark Shadows opens May 11th.

Yesterday, we reported that Chloe Moretz (Hugo) and Haley Bennett (Marley and Me) were the frontrunners to play the title character in Kimberly Peirce‘s new adaptation of Stephen King‘s horror novel, Carrie. If Moretz signs on, she’ll play the bullied telepathic teenager who finally snaps after being abused both by her religious fanatic mother and cruel classmates. Moretz is one of the most impressive young actresses working today, and I’m eager to see how her take on the character will differ from Sissy Spacek‘s in Brian De Palma‘s 1976 adaptation.
Hit the jump for more. Moretz will next be seen in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, which opens May 11th.

Now that Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry) is set in the director’s chair, producers are working to cast the lead in the MGM/Screen Gems remake of Carrie. Vulture reports that a number of actresses have been shortlisted for the part (including Dakota Fanning and Lily Collins) but Chloe Moretz and Haley Bennett (Marley and Me) are apparently the top two candidates. The remake is said to be more faithful to Stephen King’s source material than Brian De Palma’s 1976 film adaptation, and apparently The Descendants star Shailene Woodley has already passed on the lead role. Hit the jump for more on the new Carrie.

New TV spots have gone online for Tim Burton‘s Dark Shadows and the fairy-tale reimagining Snow White and the Huntsman. The spot for Dark Shadows is amusing, and between this film and Burton’s stop-motion animated remake of Frankenweenie, the director may end up having a good comedy year. As for Snow White, the spot plays up Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen along with the catchy visuals (even though there’s a weird coda of Chris Hemsworth swinging some axes).
Hit the jump to check out the TV spots. Dark Shadows opens May 11th, and Snow White and the Huntsman opens June 1st.

The marketing campaign for Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows is now in full swing with a little less than two months to go before the film’s released. While I was pleasantly surprised by the goofy first trailer, I found the random Alice Cooper cameo to be a little irksome and cheesy. That said, it’s good to see Burton doing comedy again and I’m hoping for the best from this adaptation of the cult soap series. Nine character posters have now been unveiled, giving us a colorful look at this strange, strange family. The plot involves a vampire (Johnny Depp) who awakens in 1972 after having been buried for 200 years and tries to reconnect with his descendants.
Hit the jump to check out the posters. The film also stars Eva Green, Chloe Moretz, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jackie Earle Haley, and Bella Heathcote. Dark Shadows opens on May 11th.
