Earlier this week we brought you images from Empire Magazine’s special preview on Marvel’s The Avengers. Now, Marvel has released the images in hi-res along with some new looks at Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and a casual, un-Hulked Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) with Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Speaking of Stark, if you didn’t get a chance to check out his $10 million Acura that Steve posted yesterday, click here to see it.

The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon, also stars Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as Thor, as well as Chris Evans as Captain America, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. Tom Hiddleston also returns as the villainous Loki. The Avengers assemble on May 4th. Hit the jump to check out the images.

WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER? Blu-ray Review

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: January 25th, 2012 at 5:00 am

whats-your-number-slice

These days romantic comedies have to be “not your normal romantic comedy” to be interesting at all. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Judd Apatow’s efforts, etc. may follow the same inherent structure of a Katherine Heigl or Kate Hudson film, but it’s the difference between a gourmet burger and McDonalds. And with those Heigl and Hudson efforts, the end result is usually the same, an hour and forty five minutes or so of high concept ridiculousness. Anna Faris has been smart about her work, but What’s Your Number? is a by-the-numbers rom-com. It’s also not very good, but it’s hard to get worked up over such blandness. Chris Evans and a host of supporting comics co-star in this tepid affair. Our review of What’s Your Number? on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

THE AVENGERS Cover Latest Issue of Empire Magazine; New Images and Info Unveiled

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 23rd, 2012 at 7:41 am

This month’s issue of Empire Magazine features a healthy dose of The Avengers to whet fans’ appetite, as characters from the film grace four separate covers. We’re a little over three months away from the film’s release, and Marvel seems to be ramping up the final stages of their marketing campaign. The covers give us new looks at Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, and a gun-wielding Scarlett Johansson. The Empire issue contains a set visit report for the superhero pic, and Tom Hiddleston teased a bit of what to expect from the villain Loki:

“He knows who he is now, and what his powers are. In order for The Avengers to come together, Loki has to be more menacing, and all of his malevolence is founded in a completely delusional dream.”

Plot details are still scarce for the film, but we know that Loki isn’t the sole source of villainy in the pic. President of Marvel Studios production Kevin Feige set the record straight with Empire regarding what villains we will and won’t see in The Avengers. Hit the jump to see what he had to say, and to check out the covers and images. The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4th.

Tilda Swinton and Jamie Bell May Join Chris Evans in SNOW PIERCER

Just yesterday we brought you the news that Chris Evans (Captain America) was in talks to star in Snow Piercer, an indie drama by writer/director Bong Joon-ho (The Host) and producer Park Chan-wook (Oldboy). Now it looks like Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton) and Jamie Bell (The Adventures of Tintin) are also poised to star alongside the first avenger. While we don’t yet know much about the roles they are in talks for, we do know the basic plot of Snow Piercer, which follows a group of train travelers learning to co-exist in a new ice age. Production is scheduled to start in March though a distributor is not yet in place. Snow Piercer will mark the domestic directorial debut for Bong Joon-ho, whose film The Host was South Korea’s highest grossing film of all time. Hit the jump for more on Swinton and Bell.

Chris Evans in Talks for Bong Joon-ho’s SNOW PIERCER from Producer Park Chan-wook

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 16th, 2012 at 11:26 am

Though he’ll next be seen as Captain America in Marvel’s The Avengers, Chris Evans is eyeing a decidedly different role. Variety reports that the actor is in negotiations to star in Bong Joon-ho’s (The Host) Snow Piercer. The film is “set in a world covered in snow and ice” and follows a group of train travelers who struggle to co-exist. Oldboy director Park Chan-wook is producing, and Joon-ho will be making his domestic directorial debut with the drama. The director previously talked to Steve some time ago about the project, which he revealed takes place in a new ice age.

Joon-ho’s monster movie The Host became the highest grossing South Korean film of all time and spurned talk of a Hollywood remake, so his domestic debut is a pretty big deal. Chan-wook just made his own English-language debut with the horror drama Stoker starring Nicole Kidman, which recently wrapped filming. Evans is currently shooting the crime drama The Iceman. Production on Snow Piercer will get underway in March.

Joss Whedon Says THE AVENGERS Will Be from Captain America’s Perspective

The Avengers is smorgasbord of superheroes and while it’s possible to do the movie from multiple perspective, writer-director Joss Whedon says we’ll see the movie mostly through one character’s eyes.  In the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, Whedon explains,

“I set out with a very simple problem: There is no reason for these people to be in the same movie. So that’s what my movie has to be about.  So much of the movie takes place from Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) perspective, since he’s the guy who just woke up and sees this weird ass world. Everyone else has been living in it.”

Hit the jump for my thoughts on Whedon’s approach.  The film also stars Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, and Samuel L. JacksonThe Avengers opens in 3D on May 4th.

A few new images from The Avengers have popped up online. As we’ve crossed the threshold into the New Year, the release date for the star-studded superhero movie is looming. These new images give us a look at Iron Man in flight, as well as some familiar peeks at a fight involving Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Chris Evans’ Captain America. Hopefully a new trailer will drop sometime soon so we can take another gander at what director Joss Whedon has in store.

Russian Trailer for THE AVENGERS

I couldn’t spot any new footage in the German trailer for The Avengers, but there’s definitely some new stuff in a Russian trailer that just went online.  For example, there’s a brief dialogue exchange between Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston), but it’s dubbed in Russian.  However, I believe it’s the exchange Tommy saw in English at D23 earlier this year.  According to Tommy, Loki says, “He has an army,” and Stark replies, “We have a Hulk.”  There’s also some brief shots of Captain America (Chris Evans) jumping out of a plane and Loki dealing some damage to our fine planet and its citizens.

Hit the jump to check out the Russian trailer.  The film also stars Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, and Samuel L. JacksonThe Avengers opens in 3D on May 4, 2012.

New Posters for THE AVENGERS and HAYWIRE

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 20th, 2011 at 9:54 am

New posters have gone online for The Avengers and Haywire.  Marvel seems to be taking a page from Warner Bros’ Harry Potter playbook by churning out as many character posters as possible between now and the arrival of the movie.  We’ve already seen the character banners, but now Marvel is disassembling these banners into individual posters.

There’s also a new poster for Haywire and it shares the same eye-catching design as the previous one-sheets.  It even makes the actors’ face-boxes look cool.  Hit the jump to check out the new posters.  Haywire opens January 20, 2012.  The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4, 2012.

German Trailer for THE AVENGERS Supposedly Shows New Footage

A German trailer for The Avengers has gone online.  Other sites are saying it has new footage, but I’m not seeing anything I didn’t see in either the U.S. trailer or the Captain America post-credits teaser.  If it’s there, I leave it to eagle-eyed readers to point it out.  There may also be some new voiceover dialogue, but I’m not sure since my German is a little non-existent.

Hit the jump to watch the German trailer.  The film stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, and Mark RuffaloThe Avengers opens in 3D on May 4, 2012.

New Banners for THE AVENGERS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 15th, 2011 at 6:04 am

Marvel has released two new banners for The Avengers.  They’re almost identical to the previous banners except a couple of the poses are different and there isn’t a giant “A” covering the superheroes and Loki (still no love for S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders)).  But the kids love The Avengers so I’ve put the new banners after the jump.  The film opens in 3D on May 4, 2012 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, and Mark Ruffalo.

Chris Evans Set to Replace James Franco in THE ICEMAN

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 21st, 2011 at 12:19 pm

Last month James Franco dropped out of The Iceman, the biopic based on the life of professional hitman Richard “The Iceman” Kuklinski, citing contractual disagreements. While the project was thrown into jeopardy, producers have locked in a solid replacement and things seem to be back on track. Deadline reports that Chris Evans has made a deal to take over Franco’s role as Kuklinski’s mentor. Michael Shannon is onboard to play Kuklinski, with Benicio Del Toro set as mob box Roy Demeo. While Franco was an interesting choice, I quite like the casting of Evans. It’s clear he doesn’t plan on being pigeon-holed into the “leading man” roles following the success of Captain America.

Kuklinski worked as a contract killer for the mob earned the nickname “The Iceman” by freezing the bodies of his victims in order to disguise the time of death and throw the authorities off track. Ariel Vromen (Danika) is directing the pic, which is based on the book The Iceman: The True Story of a Cold-Blooded Killer. Hit the jump for a synopsis.

Joss Whedon Talks about the Characters of THE AVENGERS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 18th, 2011 at 9:41 am

avengers-joss-whedon-scarlett-johansson-movie-set-photo-slice

Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers is in uncharted territory when it comes to superhero movies.  Every superhero or superhero team stand in its own universe and every movie keeps the focus on that superhero or team.  The Avengers is pulling characters we’ve seen in other movies and throwing them all together.  Whedon has had to figure out how to not only keep the established personalities of these characters, but also explore how they’ll change in a group dynamic, while still giving them an arc that will lead to their next solo adventure.

Whedon recently explained what we can expect to see from Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).  Hit the jump for more.  The film also stars Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Cobie Smulders, and Tom HiddlestonThe Avengers opens in 3D on May 4, 2012.

New Banners for THE AVENGERS [Updated]

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 17th, 2011 at 8:35 am

the-avengers-movie-poster-banner-slice-01

Marvel has released a new banner for The Avengers.  The banner is really just a collection of four character posters, so it will probably be split up at some point.  It’s neat to see Mark Ruffalo starting to go a little Hulk, but I’m not sure why Captain America’s new helmet is so shiny.  However, I do like that he can throw his shield and check for B.O. at the same time.  Every superhero needs to be able to multitask.

Hit the jump to check out the larger version of the banner.  The film also stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, and Cobie SmuldersThe Avengers opens in 3D on May 4, 2012. [Update: We've added another banner showcasing Nick Fury (Jackson), Loki (Hiddleston), Hawkeye (Renner), and Black Widow (Johansson)]

First Trailer for THE AVENGERS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: October 11th, 2011 at 7:03 am

The first trailer for writer/director Joss Whedon’s The Avengers is now available online. Quick impression: I really like what I see. The plot is simple and to the point: Loki wants to destroy the Earth, and Nick Fury puts a team of superheroes together to stop him. While this may be a “team”, the star of the trailer (and perhaps the movie; we’ll see) is Robert Downey Jr. He gets both the laugh lines and the bad-ass lines. I don’t think anyone else talks except for Loki, Nick Fury, and Captain America. The only thing that’s awful is the music that plays in the second half of the trailer, but that’s no fault of the movie.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, and Cobie Smulders. The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4th, 2012.
