SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK Blu-ray Review

Creating the perfect mix of drama, comedy, romance, and powerful acting is often a theatrical recipe that stands just out of reach of most productions. Sometimes the drama and romance is there, but the comedic moments fall flat, or the actors give their all to a script that jumps from place to place, fostering few laughs and even fewer tears. Silver Linings Playbook, an Academy nominated film with an award-winning cast, gives audiences a full helping of laughs, tears, and embraces in amazing, yet equal measure, brought to the table by a stellar group of actors who not only made their characters lovable, but astonishingly believable.

SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK Review

[Note: This is a re-post of my review from the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.  Silver Linings Playbook opens today in limited release.]

We have acceptable levels of “crazy” in our society, and that in itself is kind of crazy. Some psychosis is cute and charming, while other acts of craziness demand hospitalization and medication. This distinction is obviously based on harm, both to others and to oneself. But there’s a “healthy” level of crazy, and the search for that level is what makes David O. Russell‘s Silver Linings Playbook sharply comic and surprisingly sweet. O. Russell has once again returned to study the dysfunctional family, and while Silver Linings Playbook is softer than Flirting with Disaster and even The Fighter, it still has enough of an edge to deliver some great jokes, and strong performances to make the emotions ring true.

Chris Tucker in Talks to Star in Remake of THE INTOUCHABLES

The Intouchables has been a huge hit overseas, raking in $395 million internationally.  The French film has piled up $9 million domestically in limited release, but it’s total gross is enough to get The Weinstein Company interested in an English-language remake.  In March, we reported that Bridesmaids director Paul Feig was in talks to helm the flick (re-titled “Untouchables“) which is based on the true story of the friendship between a wealthy quadriplegic (François Cluzet) and a street-smart guy (Omar Sy) who stumbles into the job of the millionaire’s caretaker.  It’s a nice movie albeit it a tad on the sappy side.  Colin Firth was reportedly circling the Cluzet role, and now it looks like Chris Tucker may co-star in the Sy role.

New Trailer for SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK Starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence

A new trailer has gone online for David O. Russell‘s Silver Linings Playbook.  The film stars Bradley Cooper as a man who’s recently been released from a mental hospital after having a nervous breakdown as a result of walking in on his wife sleeping with another man.  However, he’s resolved to get his wife back, but along the way he meets the equally-damaged Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), who’s recovering from her husband’s death.  Silver Linings Playbook was one of the better movies I saw at TIFF this year.  It’s sweet, funny, thoughtful, and this trailer conveys all those aspects (although it opens by showing off one of the film’s best scenes).  The movie will likely be one of the major contenders in this year’s awards race, especially for Lawrence who gives an outstanding performance.

The Weinstein Company has released new images from David O. Russell’s upcoming drama, The Silver Linings PlaybookBradley Cooper plays a former teacher who, after spending four years in a mental institution, moves back in with his mother and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife.  However, he strikes up a relationship with a neighbor (Jennifer Lawrence) who’s also mental problems.  Although the trailer played a bit corny, I liked what I saw from the cast, which also includes Jackie Weaver, Chris Tucker, Julia Stiles, and Robert De Niro.  The movie is definitely one of my must-see flicks at the Toronto International Film Festival.

First Trailer for David O. Russell’s SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK Starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence

The first trailer for David O. Russell‘s Silver Linings Playbook has gone online.   Bradley Cooper plays a former teacher who, after spending four years in a mental institution, moves back in with his mother and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife.  However, he strikes up a relationship with a neighbor (Jennifer Lawrence) who’s also mental problems.  I really like what I’m seeing from the cast, especially Cooper and Lawrence.  The trailer does make the film look a little sacchrine, but Russell has never skewed towards the mawkish, so I’m going to assume the heavy-handed feel-good stuff is designed to make the film appeal to a larger audience.

Ice Cube Talks 21 JUMP STREET and the Next FRIDAY Sequel

Ice-Cube-21-Jump-Street-Friday-Sequel-interview

21 Jump Street is going to surprise you.  Not only is it one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a long time, it’s got some great action and awesome performances from all involved.  If you had told me that the pairing of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum would be comedy gold, I would have never believed you.  But they are.  Also, another big surprise was Ice Cube.  I’ve seen the film twice and both times he brings the house down with his almost everything he says.  Trust me, you want to see 21 Jump Street and I’d advise seeing it with a crowded theater.  It’s a blast.  For more on the film, here’s Matt’s glowing review, Brendan’s set visit, a five-minute red band clip, and all our coverage on directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller‘s awesome movie.

Last week I got to speak with Ice Cube at the New York City press junket.  During the interview he talked about how he got involved in the project, did his character change during the shoot, karaoke, and his favorite movie, director and actor.  In addition, Cube gave me an update on the next Friday sequel and addressed whether or not Chris Tucker will return.  He told me, “There’s a lot of movement. I’m writing the script right now, so we worked out a deal with New Line. The ball is rolling. We invited everybody back and we’ll have a fun movie.”  Hit the jump for more.

Ice Cube Talks Next FRIDAY Sequel and Future Directorial Projects; Says He’s Currently Writing the Script for FRIDAY Sequel

Ice-Cube-Friday-Sequel-interview

Last fall, we learned that New Line was in talks with Ice Cube to write, produce and star in a fourth installment of the Friday franchise. The 1995 film spawned two sequels: Next Friday and Friday After Next, and kicked off the acting career of Chris Tucker. The actor all but dropped out of the spotlight following Rush Hour 3, but has recently returned to acting with a role in David O. Russell’s upcoming The Silver Linings Playbook. When news of another Friday movie broke, word was that Cube was interested in having Tucker reprise his character of Smokey from the first film.

Steve got to speak with Cube at the 21 Jump Street press junket this morning in New York City, and Cube gave a brief update on the next Friday sequel and addressed whether or not he thinks Tucker will return. Additionally, as he recently directed an entry in ESPN’s 30 for 30 series, the multi-talented performer talked about the prospect of directing more often in the future. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

New Line Plots Return to FRIDAY with Ice Cube, Possibly Chris Tucker

by     Posted 3 years, 12 days ago

ice-cube-chris-tucker-friday-slice

A lot can go down between Thursday and Saturday, but it’s been almost ten years since we’ve seen a Friday movie. That could all change as New Line is in talks with Ice Cube to write, produce and star in another installment of the series. Cube executive produced and starred as Craig Jones in the 1995 original and reprised his role both on screen and off in the 2000 sequel Next Friday and 2002’s Friday After Next. Cube may also be in line to direct the next segment.

A favorite from the first movie, Smokey, played by Chris Tucker, is in talks to return for the new film. Cube apparently wants him to reprise his role but Tucker has been non-committal. Tucker and Cube were the main focus of the first movie as they spent most of the day smoking, drinking and doing all kinds of ill shit. Hit the jump for more.

David O. Russell’s THE SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK Set for November 21, 2012

by     Posted 3 years, 12 days ago

The Weinstein Company has set the release date of David O. Russell‘s The Silver Linings Playbook for November 21, 2012.  Based on the novel by Matthew Quick, the movie centers on a former high school teacher (Bradley Cooper) who returns home after four years in a mental institution to live with his mother (Jackie Weaver) and win back the affection of his estranged wife.  The movie also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Tucker, Julia Stiles, and Robert De NiroSilver Linings sounds like it could be awards material and now TWC can put “From the Oscar-nominated Director of The Fighter” on the poster.

The Weinsteins will probably take Silver Linings out for a spin on the awards circuit before its November 21st release.  Of course, the Thanksgiving Day weekend is always crowded and so far the date also belongs to Alfonso Cuaron‘s sci-fi drama Gravity, the family comedy Parental Guidance, the Keanu Reeves‘ action-adventure 47 Ronin, and the animated film Rise of the Guardians.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of The Silver Linings Playbook. Chris Tucker and Julia Stiles have joined Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jackie Weaver, and Robert De Niro in David O. Russell’s adaptation of Matthew Quick’s novel The Silver Linings Playbook.  Cooper plays a former high school teacher returning home from a four year stint in a mental institution to live with his mother (Weaver) and woo back his estranged wife, but instead falls for an unstable woman (Lawrence).  According to Deadline, Stiles will play Lawrence’s older sister.  Last month, we reported that Tucker was in negotiations to play Cooper’s friend from the mental institution who escapes multiple times to visit his pal.  He was also in talks to lead Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained (the role ultimately went to Jamie Foxx) and to co-star in the Ben Stiller-Vince Vaughn comedy Neighborhood Watch.

Silver Linings will be Tucker’s first role since 2007′s Rush Hour 3.  As for Stiles, she’s co-starring in the indie films Seconds of Happiness, Between Us, and It’s a Disaster.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

Russell’s adaptation of The Silver Linings Playbook, and he’s also circling a role in the Vince Vaughn/Ben Stiller/Jonah Hill comedy Neighborhood Watch. Leonardo DiCaprio Is Closer to Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED Than Will Smith; Idris Elba, Chris Tucker, Jamie Foxx Rumored for Django

No actor is officially confirmed for Django Unchained, the latest from Quentin Tarantino, but the cast is starting to take shape. According to Deadline, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson are expected to sign on.  Leonardo DiCaprio is about to enter negotiations to play the villain, . That doesn’t give us the titular character, though.  Will Smith was the first major contender for the role of Django, “a slave who is liberated and taught the tricks of the trade by a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter (Waltz).”  Negotiations are stuck in first gear, and we’re probably kidding ourselves to expect the super image-conscious Smith to sign on for such a gleefully controversial role.

Deadline hears Smith likely won’t sign on; possible replacements include Idris Elba, Chris Tucker, and Jamie Foxx.  That’s an eclectic list, somewhere between intriguing and Name Three Black Actors Who Aren’t Will Smith That Headlined Box Office Hits in the Past Decade.  More after the jump:
