Writer/Director Steven Antin Exclusive Interview BURLESQUE

The new musical Burlesque, about a small-town girl looking to make it big, has been a passion project for writer/director Steven Antin. Wanting to remain true to the spirit of the art form that he loves so much, he gave the film’s Burlesque Lounge a rich personality and history of its own, with a playfulness and sexiness befitting of the era it became famous.

To bring Burlesque to life on the big screen, with all of its songs, performances and flash, the filmmaker knew it would take megastar Cher and someone with the talent of Christina Aguilera. In this exclusive interview with Collider, Steven Antin talked about collaborating with both women on the development of their roles, being involved with designing everything from the costumes to the look of the club to the song-and-dance numbers, and his plans for extended and deleted scenes on the DVD. Cam Gigandet Interview BURLESQUE

In the new musical Burlesque, opening over the Thanksgiving holiday, Cam Gigandet portrays Jack, the confidante of small-town girl Ali Rose (Christina Aguilera), who has come to the big city in the pursuit of her dream to be a singing star. A fellow musician, Jack is shy about his own songwriting as he encourages Ali to take her rightful place on the stage.

The two have an undeniable and playful chemistry, that allowed them to have fun both on screen and off, even for their more intimate moments. During a recent interview at the film’s press day, the Twilight star talked about meeting and working with Cher and Christina Aguilera, doing on screen nudity and surviving L.A. when he first moved to town. The stars came out to the Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood on November 15^th to celebrate Academy Award-winning superstar Cher’s return to the big screen with the highly anticipated Thanksgiving release Burlesque. Joining the music icon on the red carpet was Christina Aguilera, fresh from receiving her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame that morning, and making her feature film acting debut as the small-town girl who moves to the big city to follow her dream of becoming a star singer. The leading ladies were joined by co-stars Julianne Hough, Stanley Tucci, Cam Gigandet, Eric Dane and Peter Gallagher, along with writer/director Steven Antin, Will Ferrell, Ryan Seacrest, James Marsden, AnnaLynne McCord and Rebecca Gayheart. For the big screen musical Burlesque, Academy Award-winning megastar Cher ended a seven-year hiatus to take on the role of Tess, the glamorous proprietor of the dazzling Burlesque Lounge. When Ali (Christina Aguilera), a small-town girl pursuing her dreams to be a star, stumbles across the inspired musical revue, she becomes determined to prove she’s meant to be on that stage. As Ali comes into her own as a performer, Tess sees an opportunity to make use of her spectacular voice and showmanship in a way that will benefit not only both women, but the club itself.

At the film’s press day, Cher talked about maintaining a successful 45-year career in the entertainment business, working with someone as talented as Christina Aguilera and revealed that she enjoyed making Burlesque so much that she would like to do another film in the future. She has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, achieved four #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, won five Grammy Awards, had three top five albums in the United States and is the only artist under 30 to make Rolling Stone magazine’s list of 100 greatest singers of all time. Now, superstar singer Christina Aguilera is making her feature film debut in the big screen musical Burlesque, starring opposite musical icon Cher.

Ali Rose (Aguilera) is a small-town girl with a big voice and big dreams. When she leaves her life behind and moves to Los Angeles, the wide-eyed young woman stumbles upon The Burlesque Lounge and immediately becomes determined to bring her own singing and dancing talents to its musical revue. Clearly meant to be on a stage, Ali quickly makes friends and enemies among the other girls at the club, wins the affection of the bartender (Cam Gigandet), comes to the attention of a charismatic entrepreneur (Eric Dane) and is taken under the wing of the club’s glamorous owner, Tess (Cher), changing her life forever.

At the film’s press day, Christina Aguilera talked about how heavily involved she was with everything from developing the character and approving the revealing wardrobe to writing the songs and performing the musical numbers. She also spoke of the priceless advice she got from Cher and revealed how much she’s looking forward to the next chapter of her life, now that she’s turning 30 in December. Sony has sent us eight clips from their upcoming film Burlesque.  Directed by Steve Antin, the film stars Christina Aguilera as an aspiring performer whose vocal talents help revive an ailing Burlesque theater.  The movie also stars Cher, Eric Dane, Cam Gigandet, Julianne Hough, Peter Gallagher, Alan Cumming, Kristen Bell, and Stanley Tucci.

Christina Aguilera Sings the Etta James Classic “Something’s Got a Hold on Me” in New Clip from BURLESQUE

A new clip from writer/director Steve Antin’s Burlesque has landed online and boasts what appears to be one of the film’s strongest elements: Grammy-winner and pop icon Christina Aguilera’s incredible voice. In the film, Aguilera plays Ali, an aspiring singer who moves to Los Angeles to chase her dreams of becoming a star. While the film’s elevator pitch may sound less than groundbreaking, you really don’t need to add much more beyond, “…and then Christina Aguilera sings a few numbers, some while scantily dressed as a burlesque dancer.”

Joining Aguilera in her first big screen appearance are Kristin Bell, Cam Gigandet, Eric Dane, Stanley Tucci, Peter Gallagher, and the apparently immortal Cher. Burlesque hits theaters on November 24^th, 2010. Due to the limited film experience of Christina Aguilera and her booming voice, Burlesque faces the brand of skepticism that comes with anchoring your movie with a musician. Writer/director Steve Antin did what he could to surround Aguilera with a seasoned cast, including Cher, who made the leap from song to screen herself with an Oscar win for 1987′s Moonstruck.  Kristen Bell, Cam Gigandet, Eric Dane, and Stanley Tucci round out the cast — check out the first trailer for Burlesque after the jump.

For those looking forward to the musical Burlesque–starring Christina Aguilera, Cher, Kristen Bell, Cam Gigandet, Eric Dane, and Stanley Tucci–seven images from the film are now online.  The movie is about a small-town gal (Aguilera) who runs away from Iowa in search of fame and ends up waitressing at The Burlesque Lounge on the Sunset Strip and goes on to become one of its performers.  The film was written and directed by Steven Antin with input on the script provided by Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich) and Diablo Cody (Juno).

Screen Gems 2010 Preview: Synopses and Images from DEAR JOHN, DEATH AT A FUNERAL, TAKERS, PRIEST, THE ROOMATE and More

Screen Gems has released synopses and some first look images from their 2010 films and it’s all after the jump.  Some of the new/first look images are from The Roomate (starring Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly), Death at a Funeral (starring Peter Dinklage, Danny Glover, Martin Lawrence, James Marsden, Tracy Morgan, Chris Rock, Zoë Saldaña), and Takers (starring Matt Dillon, Paul Walker, Idris Elba, Jay Hernandez, and Hayden Christensen).

Also, while they didn’t release any images, they did provide the first synopsis for Burlesque which stars Cher, Christina Aguilera, Eric Dane, Cam Gigandet, Julianne Hough, Peter Gallagher, Alan Cumming, Kristen Bell and Stanley Tucci.

Kristen Bell Will Go Toe-to-Toe with Christina Aguilera in BURLESQUE

THR reports that Kristen Bell has been cast opposite Christina Aguilera in Steve Antin’s upcoming musical drama, “Burlesque”.  The story follows a small-town girl (Aguilera) who sings her way to a LA neo-burlesque club where she finds love and success.  Bell would play her rival, Nikki, the loose-cannon lead dancer who gets shoved out of the spotlight when Aguilera’s character comes along.  Trailblazer Darren Aronofsky has already found a way to settle disputes between hot, female dancers with his upcoming movie “Black Swan”: angry, aggressive sex.  “Burlesque” would be wise to follow Aronofsky’s lead.
