First Trailer for ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, the third movie in the series, and it’s absolutely painful. Really and truly. It’s basically Lost with annoying pop song-singing Chipmunks. The story finds Jason Lee and his Chipmunks “chipwrecked” on a desert island after a luxurious cruise. Lee is split up from his chipmunks, and said chipmunks wonder how they’re ever going to find their master in between singing Lady Gaga songs. I guess kids will enjoy it, but this is one of those kids movies that has zero appeal to the parents that are dragged along.

The voice cast features Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler, Jesse McCartney, Amy Poehler, Anna Faris, and Christina Applegate.  Jason Lee, David Cross, and Jenny Slate will reprise their live-action roles.  Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked is scheduled for release on December 16th.

HALL PASS Blu-ray Review

It was obvious that Warner Bros. was hoping for Hall Pass to be the Farrelly Brothers’ long-awaited comeback.  Starring Owen Wilson, up-and-comer Jason Sudeikis, Christina Applegate, and The Office‘s Jenna Fischer, Hall Pass failed to become the box-office juggernaut that some of the siblings’ other films became (see also:  the massive $176m domestic gross for There’s Something About Mary), but was their latest unfairly ignored upon release?  Now that Hall Pass is available on Blu-ray and DVD, everyone who passed on the film earlier this year can find out if the Farrelly Brothers’ latest is more Dumb and Dumber…or more Stuck on You.  Find out what we thought after the jump, folks…

NBC Picks Up Comedies UP ALL NIGHT and WHITNEY, Steven Spielberg Produced Musical SMASH, and PRIME SUSPECT Remake

After last night’s huge influx of news from Fox about series pick-ups, renewals and cancellations, it’s now NBC’s turn to announce some of their new series that we can look forward to in the fall. As of now there seems to be some dissension amongst the news outlets online as to whether or not Wonder Woman will actually get picked up, and other potential series like The Playboy Club are rumored for a pick-up but we haven’t heard anything official yet.

After the jump, check out the four new series that have definitely been picked up to premiere sometime this fall including a new sitcom from stand-up comedian Whitney Cummings, another comedy from Christina Applegate, a Broadway musical series from producer Steven Spielberg, and the stateside remake of the British crime drama Prime Suspect.

HALL PASS Review

The Farrelly Brothers have exhausted any goodwill they built up during the 90s.  They once were modestly successful with gross-out humor that was disgusting but also slightly clever.  Most gross-out comedies don’t go for a bull semen joke, but Kingpin just casually threw one into the mix.  Unfortunately, the glory days of that film and There’s Something About Mary are well behind them and their 2007 remake of The Heartbreak Kid was unbearable.  With their latest effort, Hall Pass, they regain some of their footing, but the laziness of the humor combined with the inability to find what works makes for a film that’s barely passable.

Bobby and Peter Farrelly Exclusive Interview HALL PASS

In the new comedy Hall Pass, married best friends Rick (Owen Wilson) and Fred (Jason Sudeikis) both love their wives, but just can’t help checking out every other woman they come across. Fed up with their behavior, their wives, Maggie (Jenna Fischer) and Grace (Christina Applegate), decide to grant their husbands a hall pass, giving them one week of freedom to do whatever they want with no questions asked. At first, Rick and Fred think it’s  a dream come true, but they quickly realize that the single life is not all they had built it up to be.

At the film’s press day, Bobby and Peter Farrelly did this exclusive interview with Collider, where they talked about why they loved the concept of Hall Pass, assembling this great ensemble of actors, having to cut out a scene featuring The Social Network’s Armie Hammer that will later appear on the DVD, trying to determine the point where you go too far and lose your audience, and their desire to do a comedy with Tom Hanks. Red-Band Trailer for HALL PASS

As early as a few nights ago, I was seeing TV spots for Hall Pass that said “This Film Is Not Yet Rated”.  Well, a new red-band trailer for the film has gone online and Hall Pass may not yet be rated, but it’s definitely going to be rated R.  However, like all of the trailers for the film, it continues to coast on the reputation of The Farrelly Brothers’ There’s Something About Mary.  There’s Something About Mary came out in 1998.  Since that time, the Farrellys have used up all that goodwill with Shallow Hal, Stuck on You, Fever Pitch, and the unbearable remake of The Heartbreak Kid.  I want to hope that Hall Pass will be a return to raunchy form, and this trailer looks like they definitely have a firecracker in Jason Sudeikis and a secret weapon in Richard Jenkins.  The question is whether it all comes together or if their decade-long dry spell will continue.

The UK trailer for the Farrelly Brothers comedy Hall Pass has gone online.  The film stars Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis as a couple of married guys whose wives (Jenna Fischer and Christina Applegate) give them a week to try and cheat consequence-free.  I don’t have much faith in the Farrellys delivering a solid comedy (There’s Something About Mary was a long time ago and The Heartbreak Kid was wretched), but this looks like it could be a nice opportunity to Sudeikis to shine.

ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY: The ‘Rich Mahogany’ Edition Blu-ray Review

There are two kinds of people in this world: people who are fans of Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and people who aren’t. Either you totally get someone’s “Milk was a bad choice” tattoo or you blankly stare at the 2004 film starring Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Christina Applegate. Those who are fans probably already own the DVD, have probably burned it out and only need to know one thing about the Blu-ray. Buy or not to buy? Well, the answer is buy. There’s plenty of new stuff to warrant a hilarious upgrade. Hit the jump for details.

Drew Barrymore and Justin Long Interview GOING THE DISTANCE

Going the Distance is an R-rated romantic comedy that tells the story of what can happen when a one-night stand turns into something more. When Erin (Drew Barrymore) and Garrett (Justin Long) hook up, they never intend to end up in a long distance relationship that has her in San Francisco and him in New York City. But despite being on opposite coasts and having friends and family who are against them, the couple think they just might have found the real thing.

At a press conference for the film, co-stars Drew Barrymore and Justin Long, who have also shared their own real-life romance, talked about making the raunchy new comedy, filming the phone sex scene and getting that on screen first kiss just right. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

A New ANCHORMAN Blu-ray?! Over 50 Minutes of New Bonus Features Including New Deleted Scenes and Raw Footage “Good Takes”!

It’s not often I’m blindsided by a home video release, but that’s what just happened as I got a press release informing me of a new Blu-ray of Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy that includes 50 minutes of new outtakes and extra features!  The edition is called Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy The Unrated “Rich Mahogany” Edition and it’s going to be sold as an exclusive at Best Buy starting August 31st!  With Anchorman being one of the best comedies of the last decade, this is a must own Blu-ray.  According to the press release, the new extras include:

• Deleted & Extended Scenes
• Raw Footage “Good Takes”
• “Afternoon Delight” Recording Session
• AMC Loews Happy Birthday
• Cast Auditions
• Table Read
• Trailers (HD)

Also included will be The Many Months Of Burgundy Book, Collectible Trading Cards, and more.  While all too often movie studios will force fans to double dip while offering close to nothing new, this is one of those times I’m more than willing to spend my money.  If you’re a fan of director Adam McKay’s Anchorman, hit the jump for cover art and full details on the new Blu-ray.

8 Movie Clips from GOING THE DISTANCE

Opening September 3rd is New Line Cinema’s Going the Distance.  The romantic comedy stars Drew Barrymore, Justin Long, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Ron Livingston, Jim Gaffigan, Kelli Garner, Rob Riggle, and Christina Applegate.  The premise is Drew Barrymore and Justin Long meet and spend a summer together, and while neither expects it to last when Barrymore has to move back to San Francisco, the new couple decides to try and make a long distance relationship work even though their family and friends are against it.

While I think almost every angle on the romantic comedy has been played out, with the R rating and Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis playing Justin Long’s friends, I’m hoping for some honest and raw dialogue that will make this rom-com worth watching. Also, never underestimate Drew Barrymore’s appeal, as women love her.  Anyway, we’ve been given eight clips from the movie and some images, so hit the jump to check them out – along with a more detailed synopsis:

GOING THE DISTANCE Trailer Starring Drew Barrymore, Justin Long and Charlie Day

The first trailer for Going the Distance, starring real life on and off again-ers Justin Long and Drew Barrymore, is making its rounds online. The romantic comedy follows the story of a summer fling that extends into a full-on long distance relationship.

Not exactly your cup of tea? Give it a shot. I was about to turn off the trailer when Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) popped in and saved the day (pun intended. I apologize.).  The film will be the first fictional feature by Oscar-nominated, documentary director Nanette Burstein (American Teen, The Kid Stays in the Picture) and has an excellent supporting cast including Day, Christina Applegate, Ron Livingston, Jason Sudeikis, Jim Gaffigan, and Rob Riggle.

Production On ANCHORMAN 2 Could Start in February 2011

Let’s face it: everyone in the world wants Anchorman 2 to happen.  The ravenous fans want it. Writer/director Adam McKay wants it.  Hell, the entire cast wants it.  So why hasn’t it happened yet/isn’t happening now?  In truth, everyone involved with the original is just too darn expensive today.  But don’t despair yet, Burgundy enthusiasts.  For the first time in six years, there seems to be a real hope the sequel will get off the ground.

McKay told MTV that if Paramount greenlights the project soon, production could begin as early as February 2011.  He acknowledges that this timetable is a bit of a long shot, but fans of the original should see this as a real reason to feel optimistic about an Anchorman sequel.  More on the details and why exactly Paramount has cold feet after the jump.
