We have a couple minor casting stories for you this afternoon. First up, Dougray Scott and Kara Tointon will lead Omid Nooshin’s low-budget thriller Last Passenger. Per THR, the film tells “the story of a doctor who finds himself on a runaway commuter train.” A runaway train is serious business and at the very least that doctor is going to be seriously inconvenienced. The film is part of Pinewood Shepperton’s investment fund for low-budgeted movies. With a budget slightly above £1.2 million ($2.5 million), Last Passenger will be co-financed by Future Film and the BFI Film Fund. According to THR, “Pinewood Shepperton is aiming to back four films a year from first-timers, with a combined budget of around $13 million.” Their first film is the Crispian Mills and Chris Hopewell “psycho-comedy” A Fantastic Fear of Everything starring Simon Pegg.
Hit the jump for casting news on the next film from Ramin Bahrani (Goodbye Solo).

The teaser trailer for the horror comedy John Dies at the End has gone online. It’s the new flick from Bubba Ho-Tep director Don Coscarelli and it’s got great actors like Paul Giamatti, Clancy Brown, and Doug Jones (who surprisingly is not in make-up) in the cast. But after watching this teaser trailer, I still have no idea what the movie is about beyond the protagonist tripping balls. There’s apparently a new intravenous drug with the street name “Soy Sauce” because of its black color, and it causes crazy hallucinations. I guess it’s tougher to explain than “Old Elvis fights the Mummy”.

The film adaptation of Eric Powell’s Dark Horse Comics series The Goon has been in the works for some time. We covered its panel at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con, and it had hosted a panel at the event for several years prior to that. With David Fincher producing and names like Clancy Brown and Paul Giamatti attached to lend their voices, you might think that a green light wouldn’t be all that difficult to come across. That said, years later the film is still looking for funding meaning that fans of the character are still waiting to see The Goon come to life on screen. While early test footage may not be exactly what said fans are hoping for, it will have to suffice for the time being. There are two major summer blockbusters making the rounds at this year’s WonderCon. There was yesterday’s Green Lantern, which has name recognition, decades of history, and the easy classification of “Superhero Movie”. The other is Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens, which has a goofy name, comes from a 2006 cult comic, and is a sci-fi western hybrid and both of those genres are being played completely straight. Green Lantern has aspects that make it a tough sell, but it’s a cakewalk compared to how Cowboys & Aliens will need to connect with audiences.
But if anyone knows how to work a room at a comic convention, it’s Favreau. Funny, insightful, and incredibly gracious, Favreau explained why they wanted to show the movie at WonderCon and then proceeded to blow the audience away with some footage from the film, including a first look at the aliens. Hit the jump for my recap of the Cowboys & Aliens presentation.

As a child of the 1980’s, it’s been funny to watch the majority of the entertainment of that era either sequelized or remade. Whether it’s trying to emulate John Hughes’s tone in a teen driven romantic comedy, or the Indiana Jones sequel, or the birth of comic book movies, it all feels very connected to that decade. For horror fans, it seems every major and minor title is getting the remake treatment, with Wes Craven’s classic films of the period at the top of the list. Craven’s classics Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes were already done (and reasonably well), so it was only a matter of time before someone finally got to Freddy Kruger. Platinum Dunes, the remakers behind The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Amityville Horror and Friday the 13th put Samuel Bayer behind the camera, and made the smart choice in giving the iconic hat, sweater and finger-knives glove to Jackie Earle Haley. Random teens (headed up by Rooney Mara) are terrorized by Kruger in their dreams for an unknown reason, which become evident in the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, and my review of the blu-ray follows after the jump.

Cowboys & Aliens has already rounded up an impressive cast led by Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, The Last Airbender star Noah Ringer, Sam Rockwell and Harrison Ford. Now, Deadline reports that the respectable trio of Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood), Keith Carradine (Dexter) and Clancy Brown (A Nightmare on Elm Street) will round out the playbill. No details are given for Dano’s role, but Carradine will play the town sheriff, and Brown will also don a cowboy hat for the production. Recall that Jon Favreau (Iron Man 2) is directing the sci-fi comic book adaptation from a script by Damon Lindelof (Lost) and screenwriting team Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek). The talent pool is very deep here, ensures that Cowboys will be one to look out for as we approach its July 29, 2011 release date. Check out the recently released official plot synopsis after the jump.

There’s a simple formula for taking material and translating it to a different medium – involve people who not only know the work, but also love it. I’m not sure how this very simple dictum escapes Hollywood, but all too often it seems to. Thankfully, we have shining examples like Superman: The Animated Series to show us how it works. More after the jump.

Hoping to revitalize yet another horror icon, Platinum Dunes’ looks like they’re on the right track for the resurrection of Freddy Krueger and the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Our partners at Omelete have a landed three new images and the synopsis from the upcoming film and they make sure you know that Freddy has a claw-glove and it’s fucking terrifying. Imagine how bad the sound would be if he scrapped those down a chalkboard. Your eardrums wouldn’t survive.
Hit the jump to check out the new images. Hopefully we’ll be seeing a new trailer and/or new poster for the movie soon. A Nightmare on Elm Street hits theaters on April 30, 2010.

We missed some stories this past week. We’re sorry. But we did not forget them. We never forget. We’re like elephants and people who hold grudges. With that in mind, here are some stories that are a little late but they’re still great. You can enjoy them all after the jump.

“Highlander” is such a delightfully silly movie. Christopher Lambert’s Swiss accent, original songs by Queen, Clancy Brown decapitating folks as he makes his way through the story, and Sean Connery all make for a movie that is cheesy 80s action but through a camp-fantasy filter. You can’t really call it a “franchise” because that implies that anything after the first film was successful. The biggest success following “Highlander” was that the title of the sequel had the sub-title, “The Quickening”.
And now “Fast & Furious” director Justin Lin wants to remake it. Hit the jump to read the full press release and why this remake could work but not because of Justin Lin.
