We’ve got a few casting stories for you this afternoon. First up, Variety reports that Clifton Collins Jr. is the latest actor to join Guillermo del Toro’s next directorial effort Pacific Rim. The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Max Martini, and Rob Kazinisky and the director has promised that the pic will feature “the finest fucking monsters ever committed to screen,” so there’s that. Willem Dafoe is also in talks to join the future-set epic, which is scheduled for release on July 12, 2013.
Additionally, the fantastic Chazz Palminteri has joined the cast of the somewhat troubled biopic Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father. Barry Levinson is set to direct the flick which centers on the relationship between John Gotti, Jr. and his mob boss father. Palminteri will play Mafia boss Paul Castellano alongside an ensemble that includes Al Pacino, John Travolta, Kelly Preston, and Ben Foster. Production begins on location in New York on January 3rd. Hit the jump for the casting news of Lucy Punch and two others in the romantic comedy The Wedding Video.

The newest cast addition to J.T. Petty’s supernatural project, Hellbenders, is Clifton Collins Jr. (NBC’s The Event). Hellbenders, based on a graphic novel written by Petty, is about a group of demonologists in Brooklyn battling the forces of evil. Variety reports that the versatile Collins will join Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption) and Dan Fogler (Take Me Home Tonight) in the horror/comedy written and directed by Petty. Earlier this year, Petty also sold a spec script to Sony entitled Inherit the Earth, based off the comic Zombies vs Robots. The 3D Hellbenders will start filming next week and is being produced through Circle of Confusion. Hit the jump for more info on the project.

Just whipped up a nice batch of TV casting news for everyone. First up, THR reports that the amazing character actor Clifton Collins Jr. – who can be seen in blockbusters like J.J. Abrams Star Trek and hard-hitting dramas like Capote – has joined the cast of NBC’s new fall drama series The Event. Collins will play Thomas, a key player in the show’s secret conspiracy who will come into conflict with the president of the United States. What exactly the conspiracy deals with no one is sure, but plenty will find out about The Event when the pilot is screened for Comic-Con audiences next week. Stay tuned for our coverage on that new series and more from the convention in San Diego next week.
Hit the jump for some casting news on the original CSI and a hope and a prayer for a new cast member on True Blood.

Who deserves to pass judgment upon the wicked? “The Boondock Saints” asked that question. Now, because fans couldn’t get enough, we finally have a sequel. Joining Connor and Murphy in this second outing are Clifton Collins Jr. as fellow vigilante Romeo, and actress Julie Benz as Special Agent Eunice Bloom. I recently interviewed Benz and Collins, Jr. Clifton was already immersed in the Saints milieu being good friends with writer/director Troy Murphy. Benz, on the other hand, was new to this world, the group, and their ten plus years of inside jokes. She also had to learn to twirl a gun. Watch the interview after the jump.

I know that “Boondock Saints” has a very strong cult following. I also know that the cool thing to do is to hate on the film (and its fans). I’m somewhere in the middle. I remember renting “Boondock Saints” right before it became huge and not really loving the film, but enjoying the more insane and campy aspects to it. I also remember trying to work in Willem Dafoe’s awesome delivery of “There was a firefight!!” into every conversation for about 2 weeks. Anyway, it kind of blows my mind the film has such a strong cult following. I’m indifferent when it comes to the original film and I feel the same way with the sequel. But I know that some of you guys out are anticipating it. To those who are, you can check out some stills and the film’s poster when you hit the jump.

“Extract” is worth seeing for a multitude of reasons. It’s one of the funniest movies of the year, it’s Mike Judge’s best film to date, it’s a comedy that has an enjoyable subtext, and there isn’t a single comic performer who doesn’t get a chance to shine, no matter how big their character’s part or the actor’s public recognition. But the best reason is that you’re watching a comic legend in the making as Jason Bateman gives his finest performance to date. That’s saying something not only because of his work on “Arrested Development” but in every film he’s managed to steal no matter how little screen-time he had.

I was hoping I could get one of the site’s other writers to do this story. Someone who didn’t loathe “The Boondock Saints” as much as I do, but no such luck. So now I have to hate this trailer apart. I don’t want to. I’m always open to the possibility that I may like a movie and that I misjudged the film.
And then one of the characters says “Let’s do some gratuitous violence,” and that pretty much sums up why I think the first movie is awful and why I think the sequel will be as bad if not worse. Hit the jump to watch the trailer and then if you think these movies are great, say so in the comments and I’ll tell you why you’re wrong. “The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day” somehow gets a theatrical release on October 30th.

Crank caught a lot of people by surprise, including me. I was not sure what to expect from the Lionsgate film, which arrived with little publicity, and didn’t seem to get too much press beforehand. The film was a combination of the film D.O.A. and Grand Theft Auto, with Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) trying to avenge his own death, only keeping himself alive by stimulating his adrenal gland. But keeping high on life is a moment to moment struggle, so the film keeps raising the stakes. My Review of Crank 2 after the jump.
