In a summer filled with superhero spectacles and sci-fi extravaganzas, it’s nice to get back to the roots of Depression-era, moonshine-runnin’ crime dramas.  Director John Hillcoat (The Road) has the cure for what ails you in Lawless, an adaptation of the Matt Bondurant novel, “The Wettest County in the World.”  Lawless stars Shia LaBeouf (Transformers) and Tom Hardy (Inception) as the Bondurant brothers, Southern bootleggers during the Prohibition era.  A new clip from the film shows a nice moment between the two characters and highlights the range of both.  Another clip introduces the strangely androgynous character, Special Agent Charlie Rakes (Guy Pearce) who has swooped in from Chicago to shut the Bondurants down.  There’s some good stuff on display here, hints of which were seen in this trailer.  You should also check out these awesome character postersLawless, also starring Jessica Chastain, Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke, Mia Wasikowska and Dane DeHaan will debut in theaters on August 29th.  Hit the jump to see the clips.

The prestigious Cannes Film Festival kicks off next week, and we’re starting to see some promotional materials from a few of the films that will premiere at the fest.  We’ve already seen a stellar trailer for the prohibition-set crime drama Lawless and a fantastic clip from director Andrew Dominik’s (The Assassination of Jesse James) Killing Them Softly.  Now a few clips have surfaced for two Cannes films (both set in the South) that feature Matthew McConaughey.  The first is director Lee Daniels’ (Precious) adaptation of The Paperboy, which features McConaughey and Zac Efron playing a pair of brothers who team-up to investigate the potential wrongful conviction of a death-row inmate (John Cusack).

We also have two clips from director Jeff Nichols’ (Take Shelter) deep South drama Mud, which finds McConaughey playing a fugitive hiding out on an island in Mississippi who, with the help of two young boys, tries to escape and reunite with his lost love (Reese Witherspoon).  Hit the jump to check out the clips.

Three Clips from MEN IN BLACK 3

The first two clips from director Barry Sonnefeld’s Men in Black 3 have gone online.  Both clips are heavy on the action and light on the dialogue, but one of them gives us a look at those strange single-wheel vehicles in motion.  When we first caught a glimpse of the vehicle, I was instantly reminded of this South Park episode.  Now that we’ve seen them in action, well, they still look like that God-forsaken machine.  The other clip highlights a short conversation between Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones before they get to blastin’ aliens.  Nevertheless, I’m mainly excited about three things for Men in Black 3: Josh Brolin’s spot-on Tommy Lee Jones impression, Rick Baker’s incredible alien make-up, and Bill Hader.  If you missed them, be sure to check out over 40 images from the film that include some fantastic looks at Baker’s aliens, as well as Steve’s wide-ranging interview with Sonnenfeld.

Hit the jump to watch the clips.  The film also stars Jermaine Clement, Alice Eve, and Emma Thompson and opens in 3D on May 25th. [Update: A third clip has gone online and is now included after the jump.]

Last week we shared two clips from Wes Anderson’s latest feature, Moonrise Kingdom, and now all of the clips released thus far are officially online.  There are six clips in total and they’re chock full of Anderson staples.  The visuals are gorgeous, the actors look like they’re having a blast, and the camera movements are undeniably Anderson-y.  For those unfamiliar, the story centers on a young boy and girl who decide to run away together into the wilderness, and the madness that ensues from the community’s search for the pair.  I’m a big fan of Anderson so this one’s been on my radar for a while, and these clips only serve to reinforce my excitement for the film.  Let the twee commence!

We’ve been provided with seven clips from director Richard Linklater’s (Dazed and Confused, School of Rock, Before Sunrise) new film Bernie to share with our readers.  The dark comedy is based on a true story and stars Jack Black as an assistant funeral director of a small Texas town who wooed and then murdered a cantankerous, affluent widow.  Black is surrounded by a terrific supporting cast that includes Shirley MacLaine as said widow and Matthew McConaughey as the one person in town who suspects Bernie of wrongdoing.  While I’ve been less than impressed with Black’s recent film choices, I thought his work in Bernie was incredible and it’ll remind you that when he has the right material, he’s a great actor.

Though it’s unofficially The Avengers Day, Sony’s getting in on the superhero action with three new clips from The Amazing Spider-Man.  The clips were unveiled through the film’s tie-in marketing campaign with select Kellogg’s and Keebler products.  Consumers simply aim their smartphones at the Peter Parker on the back of the box, and the clip starts playing on their phone (ah, technology).  One of the scenes is a clip we saw at Comic-Con last year that showed off some of the playfulness of Parker, while the other two highlight his newfound Spidey powers.

We’ve got seven clips from the Nicholas Sparks adaptation The Lucky One to share today.  The film stars Zac Efron as a marine in the Iraq war who finds a photograph of a woman that brings him good luck while in combat.  He proceeds to seek her out once stateside and strikes up a romance with the woman.  It’s a fairly stalkerish story, but for fans of Sparks’ other adaptations I’m assuming this one’s right up their alley.

Hit the jump to watch the clips.  The film also stars Taylor Schilling, Jay R. Ferguson, Riley Thomas Stewart, Adam Lefevre and Blythe Danner.  The Lucky One opens on April 20th.

We have a couple of new clips and images to share with you this afternoon.  The first clip and two new images are from Matt Reeves’ (Cloverfield) Let Me In starring Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass), Kody Smit-McPhee (The Road), and Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins (The Visitor).  While you can debate the necessity of the remake (and trust me, I have), I must say that I have been impressed with what I’ve seen from the film thus far and completely agree with Matt as it is also one of my most-anticipated films for the remainder of 2010.  The second clip is a fourth television spot from Devil, the horror/thriller from producer M. Night Shyamalan.  If you’ve enjoyed what has been shown from the film thus far, you will most likely dig this clip as it maintains the mystery and overall creepiness seen previously.

Hit the jump to check out the clips and images for yourself.  Let Me In will be screening at both the Toronto Film Festival and Fantastic Fest and it hits theaters on October 1stDevil opens on September 17th.
