Is the CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS Sequel Called CLOUDY 2: REVENGE OF THE LEFTOVERS? Plus a First Look at Promo Poster

I love the animated adaptation of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.  It is delightfully strange, witty, and at times, downright darkly comic (it still blows my mind that directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller got away with the scene where Flynn charges into a house, and basically uses snowballs to murder a family).  I was a little bummed that the duo wouldn’t be returning for the sequel, but I’m encouraged that Horrible Bosses writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are handling the script, and new directors Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn worked on the first movie.  We still don’t know what the sequel will be about, but we might know what it’s called.  We were sent a promo poster for the movie and the title reads: Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers.  As you may recall, the leftovers created a crazy avalanche that forced out the poor citizens of Swallow Falls, so haven’t the leftovers already had their revenge?

Again, this could just be a working title, and to be honest, I don’t really care what the movie is called.  I’m just hoping the flick is as funny and memorable as Cloud with a Chance of Meatballs.  Hit the jump to check out the promo poster.

Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn Set to Direct CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2

Sony Animation has settled on the directors of their follow-up to 2009’s swell animated feature Cloud with a Chance of Meatballs. Variety reports that animation artists Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn will be taking the helm on the sequel. Last we heard, the original film’s directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were attached to return for Cloudy 2, but it now appears that they won’t be back. Lord and Miller are currently busy with post-production on their live-action debut 21 Jump Street (which looks great), and the recent greenlight for the Lego feature film that they’re attached to may have something to do with their non-involvement with the Cloudy sequel. Hit the jump for more, including the story status of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.

After seeing the movie modifier ‘3D’ lose almost all of its cache over the past year or so, who knew that an animated re-issue with that three dimensional makeover could roar this loud at the box office?  Doubling even the most sanguine early projections, Disney’s The Lion King 3D took in an estimated $29.3 million this weekend from its 2,330 (mostly 3D) locations to become this weekend’s undisputed box office ruler.

Phil Lord interview slice 21 Jump Street Lego movie

Last week we reported the guys who directed the wonderful Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Phil Lord and Chris Miller) were attached to write and direct the Lego movie at Warner Bros.  Since the original report had very little information about how they planned on bringing Lego to life, I used some connections to get Phil Lord on the phone for an exclusive interview.  Since he’s also hard at work developing the 21 Jump Street movie at Sony, he also gave me an update on that project and what’s the status of the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs sequel.  Here’s some highlights:

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS Blu-ray Review

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: February 3rd, 2010 at 6:20 am

cloudy with a chance of meatballs slice 2.jpg

Pixar has so long been the benchmark for quality re: computer generated animation, that when people come close it’s easy to laud. Especially after all those terrible DreamWorks films. Kung Fu Panda was an obvious step up for DreamWorks Animation, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs suggests that Pixar doesn’t have own the CGI playground. Bill Hader stars as Flint Lockwood, an inventor who creates a machine that turns the town’s weather into food. Anna Farris plays Sam Sparks, the newscaster who becomes his love interest. My review of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs on the Blu-ray after the jump.

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS Directors May Walk Over to 21 JUMP STREET

With a Golden Globe nomination in their pocket for Best Animated Film, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are currently in negotiations to make their live-action feature debut with an adaptation of the 1980s TV show 21 Jump Street.  As Heat Vision describes the show in their report, “The show followed young-looking cops working undercover in high school.”  Jonah Hill is starring and executive producing with Scott Pilgrim vs. the World co-writer Michael Bacall handling the script.

Lord and Miller also wrote Cloudy, which grossed $122.6 million domestically and earned most positive reviews.  The pair’s credits also include writing for How I Met Your Mother and creating the animated cult comedy show Clone High for MTV.

Friday Box Office – COUPLES RETREAT Breaks October Comedy Record with $12.3 Million Debut

This is why Vince Vaughn is known as box office gold.  A typical Vaughn comedy has a reasonable price tag and reaps big returns… if not always big laughs.  The actor made the new bosses over at Universal very happy on Friday as “Couples Retreat” opened to over $12.3 million from 3,000 screens.  It didn’t hurt that the PG-13 comedy was the only wide release of the week, of course.  Meanwhile, Sony is still feeling the love with “Zombieland” at number two and their 3D toon-that-could, “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs”, losing little monetary momentum at number three.  But the real momentum this week belongs to Paramount.  The studio’s indie horror pick-up “Paranormal Activity” moved from midnight-only screenings in a handful of cities to 159 venues (at all hours) on Friday.  With marketing being handled mainly by fans and social networkers, the studio can just sit back and count the cash as it rolls in.  Already the $11,000 pic has earned $3.7 million total.  Check back tomorrow to see exactly how much word-of-mouth will be worth this time.

Title Friday Total
1 Couples Retreat $12,300,000 $12,300,000
2 Zombieland $4,800,000 $37,600,000
3 Cloudy w/a Chance $3,100,000 $87,400,000
4 Paranormal Activity $2,500,000 $3,700,000
5 Toy Story 1 & 2 3D $2,000,000 $17,000,000

Weekend Box Office – ZOMBIELAND Reaps a $25 Million Opening

“Zombieland” is already a financial hit for Sony.  After opening up a big lead on Friday, Ruben Fleischer’s $24 million directorial debut continued to dominate a crowded weekend session, closing Sunday with an estimated $25 million from 3,036 engagements.  And because, lately, the box office has room for only one hit per weekend, new releases like Drew Barrymore’s “Whip It” suffered by comparison.

Title Weekend Total
1 Zombieland $25,000,000 $25,000,000
2 Cloudy w/a Chance $16,700,000 $82,392,000
3 Toy Story 1 & 2 $12,500,000 $12,500,000
4 The Invention of Lying $7,350,000 $7,350,000
5 Surrogates $7,344,000 $26,387,000
6 Whip It $4,850,000 $4,850,000
7 Capitalism: A Love Story $4,850,000 $5,252,000
8 Fame $4,754,000 $16,634,000
9 The Informant! $3,800,000 $26,580,000
10 Love Happens $2,777,000 $18,910,000

Friday Box Office – ZOMBIELAND On Top with a $9.4 Million Debut

by Nicole Pedersen    Posted: October 3rd, 2009 at 10:07 am

slice_zombieland_movie_poster_01.jpg

October is off to a strong start for at least one studio. Sony saw “Zombieland” take number one on Friday with a $9.4 million debut in 3,036 theatres. The horror/comedy hybrid knocked another Sony release, “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs”, into second place after two weeks at number one. In other 3D news, the debut of Pixar’s “Toy Story 1 & 2″ was not far behind “Meatballs” with $3.2 million. Disney’s double bill should take a bite out of Sony’s weekend-matinee monopoly but, playing in only 1,745 locations, it may be hard for the retooled toys to catch up.  Sony was not the only studio that had something to smile about on Friday. Warner Brothers’ new comedy “The Invention of Lying” surprised even the studio by coming in fourth with a $2.5 million debut in 1,707 theatres.  Fox Searchlight’s “Whip It”, playing in the same number of venues, was also a surprise.  The Drew Barrymore/Ellen Page vehicle fell short of the top five despite those ‘sneak peaks’ the studio hosted last Saturday.  Check back tomorrow for full weekend box office results.

Title Friday Total
1 Zombieland $9,400,000 $9.4
2 Cloudy w/a Chance $3,700,000 $69.4
3 Toy Story 1 & 2 $3,200,000 $3.2
4 Invention of Lying $2,500,000 $2.5
5 Surrogates $2,200,000 $21.2

Weekend Box Office – It’s Still CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS for Moviegoers

by Nicole Pedersen    Posted: September 27th, 2009 at 11:18 am

Despite mounting an early and aggressive advertising campaign for their high-concept sci-fi thriller “Surrogates”, Disney could not catch up to Sony’s holdover hit “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” in time to claim the number one spot on the charts.  After opening up a small lead on Friday, the 3D animated toon finished with another $24 million on its second weekend, making it easily the most-successful release of the month at $60 million in total.  September had more bad news for its new releases as both MGM’s reboot of “Fame” and Overture’s sci-fi horror flick “Pandorum” struggled to find their footing.  Ha! Get it?  The dancers of “Fame” couldn’t find their footing!  More witty bon mots after the jump.

Title Weekend Total
1 Cloudy w/a Chance… $24,600,000 $60,036,000
2 Surrogates $15,000,000 $15,000,000

Friday Box Office – CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS Reigns for a Second Friday

by Nicole Pedersen    Posted: September 26th, 2009 at 11:16 am

Audiences haven’t tired of the 3D toon “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” quite yet. Sony Animation’s demographically-appealing feature film brought in another $5.2 million on its eighth day out: a decline of only 31% from its number one debut last Friday.  This means that a second weekend at the top of the box office is now likely.  The film that was supposed to take over that number one spot, Disney’s sci-fi thriller “Surrogates”, was not far behind “Meatballs” with an estimated $5 million from its 2,951 dates.   But if Bruce Willis was going to stage a coup he would have had to make his move before the more kid-centric Saturday session.  Meanwhile, more bad news for MGM as their first feature release of 2009, “Fame”, registered a debut of only $3.5 million from its 3,096 engagements.  Check back tomorrow to see how fall’s first weekend at the movies plays out.

Title Friday Total
1 Cloudy w/a Chance $5,200,000 $41,000,000
2 Surrogates $5,000,000 $5,000,000
3 Fame $3,550,000 $3,550,000
4 The Informant! $2,100,000 $16,100,000
5 Pandorum $1,526,000 $1,526,000

Weekend Box Office – CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS Has Biggest Opening this September with $30 Million

Despite Hollywood’s September slowdown, studios are still sending plenty of movies into theatres.  Few of this year’s fall freshmen are connecting with audiences, however.  Like Tyler Perry’s “I Can Do Bad All By Myself” one week ago, this weekend’s box office had room for only one hit out of four attempts – Sony Animation’s “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”.  The CGI adaptation of the popular children’s book brought in an estimated $30 million in its first three days for over $9,000 per screen.  When measured against competing titles like “Jennifer’s Body” and “Love Happens” that’s damn near a landslide of cash.

Title Weekend Total
1 Cloudy with a… $30,100,000 $30,100,000
2 The Informant! $10,545,000 $10,545,000
3 I Can Do Bad… $10,060,000 $37,932,000
4 Love Happens $8,456,000 $8,456,000
