Colin Firth is set to co-star with Reese Witherspoon in Atom Egoyan‘s adaptation of Devil’s Knot. The film is based off Mara Leveritt‘s novel of the same name, which centers on the West Memphis Three. For those who don’t know, the West Memphis Three were three non-conformist teenagers who were arrested and convicted for the murder of three eight-year-old boys despite flimsy evidence and the jury’s ignorance and prejudice. The three remained in prison for almost 20 years on a crime they obviously didn’t commit. Their story was chronicled in the documentary Paradise Lost (and its two subsequent sequels) and the new documentary, West of Memphis.

Now playing in limited release is director Tomas Alfredson’s (Let the Right One In) great new movie, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Based off the 1974 British novel by John le Carre, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is the first novel of the “Karla Trilogy” and the first installment that may spawn a franchise. The spy thriller features Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Colin Firth, and Benedict Cumberbatch, just to name a few, and is set during the Cold War era and follows former spy George Smiley (Oldman) through his investigation of a possible double agent within MI-6. It’s a hell of a movie and one you should definitely see.
Anyway, over the past few weeks I’ve been posting the video interviews I did at the New York City press junket and tonight I’ve got the last one with Colin Firth. During our short interview we talked about how he got involved in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, his favorite karaoke song, how many takes does he like to do, the Oldboy rumors (he officially dropped out), and what was it like making Gambit (which was written by the Joel and Ethan Coen). Hit the jump to watch.

Director Spike Lee is gearing up to start production on his remake of Oldboy here pretty soon, and he continues to zero in on his cast. Josh Brolin is set to play the protagonist, a man who is inexplicably imprisoned for 15 years, only to be set free and sent on a hunt to track down those responsible for his abduction and imprisonment. Colin Firth was first approached to take on the villain role, and confirmed as much a few weeks ago, but he’s since passed on the role. Now Twitch reports that Lee has offered the part to Clive Owen.
While I was really hoping to see Firth in the role, Owen isn’t a bad substitute. He’s got the sophistication thing down, and it’ll be interesting to see him square off against Brolin. Owen and Lee have a bit of history together, as Owen starred in Lee’s underrated thriller Inside Man, so their relationship probably bodes well for the chances of Owen accepting the offer. Now to see whom Lee chooses as his female lead. [Update: Well that was fast; Mia Wasikowska (The Kids Are All Right) has apparently been offered the female lead. Hit the jump for more.]

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a crackling, intense, complex, old-fashioned spy-thriller…but you need to wait over an hour to get there. Director Tomas Alfredson does a fantastic job of painting a rich 1970s setting that swings between London, France, Istanbul, and Budapest, but we have trouble getting our bearings as we jump across timelines and struggle to understand the wide cast of characters. Terrific performances begin to peek out and try to surface but are smothered in an overdone attempt to obfuscate rather than intrigue. Alfredson wants to put us inside the web of confusion of trying to uncover the truth, but he strings us along for too long. At some point, the spy game must begin.

Focus Features has released a new featurette for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. It’s mostly your standard EPK fluff where everyone talks about the greatness of the material and each other. However, it also provides some background on the setting, and Tinker Tailor is a movie where the more you understand the world, the better off you’ll be. The film throws a heap of characters and jargon at you and then jumps around timelines just to make the puzzle even more difficult to solve. It certainly deepens the mystery, but it’s not a good sign when I’m handed a pamphlet (click here to view the interactive version online) with a list explaining code names and terms. (I also spent the whole movie thinking “Karla” was a nickname for the Russians, but after the movie I found out it was a code name for the Soviet intelligence chief). The featurette also attempts to build awards buzz for Gary Oldman, but we’ll see if that pans out.
Hit the jump to check out the featurette. The film also stars Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Toby Jones, David Dencik, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Stephen Graham, Kathy Burke, and Ciarán Hinds. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy opens December 9th.

I did it, folks. I came, saw, and survived yet another Black Friday. This year’s destination of choice was my local Best Buy and I sat outside in moderately chilly temperatures for around six hours for one lonely purpose: to buy things for cheaper than what they were the day before. That’s right, I rocked Best Buy to the tune of two seasons of television on DVD for a combined $15. Now, I know some of you reading this may be thinking, “Wait, Jason waited outside for six hours so that he could buy two seasons of TV on DVD?”. My answer: a resounding “Yes!”. It’s the small things, people. The small things.
But enough of my Black Friday exploits. In this week’s “Top 5″ installment you’ll find interviews for this weekend’s openers The Muppets and Hugo, new images and plot details from The Dark Knight Rises, new images from Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, and Gary Oldman and Colin Firth addressing Akira and Oldboy remake rumors. Hit the jump for a brief recap and link to each.

While many were skeptical about an English-language remake of Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy when it was announced, things got interesting when Spike Lee signed on to direct. Then the director locked Josh Brolin as his star and many fans’ fears (mine included) were abased. The next question was who Lee would choose to play the incredibly nasty villain, as the crux of the movie hinges on the dichotomy between the protagonist and the antagonist. Rumors began to surface that Colin Firth, an odd yet exciting choice, had been offered the role.
There reports were unconfirmed at the time, but Steve recently sat down with Firth to talk about the upcoming spy thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and he confirmed that he’s been approached about the role but no decisions have been made just yet. In addition, the actor talked about his recently wrapped remake of the 1966 caper comedy Gambit. The film also stars Cameron Diaz and Stanely Tucci, and was written by Joel and Ethan Coen. Just a few weeks out from the US debut of Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Focus Features has released a host of new images. The spy thriller that features Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy and Colin Firth, just to name a few, is set during the Cold War era and follows former spy George Smiley (Oldman) through his investigation of a possible double agent within MI-6. Based off of the 1974 British novel by John le Carre, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is the first novel of the “Karla Trilogy” and the first film installment may spawn a franchise.
Since the UK saw a September release for the film, we have a host of clips, images and trailers that you can find here. But with the US release coming up, we’ll also have new interviews with the cast coming soon. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy also stars Mark Strong, Toby Jones, John Hurt and Benedict Cumberbatch and opens December 9th. Hit the jump to check out the new images.

While no one was especially enthused with the idea of an American Oldboy remake, simply because director Park Chan-wook’s original is so fantastic, things got intriguing once Spike Lee signed on to direct. Then he cast Josh Brolin as the lead, and I have to say I was pretty onboard with this new version at that point. Now Lee may be adding even more prestige to the pic as Twitch is reporting that Academy Award-winner Colin Firth has been offered the villainous role of Adrian. For those unfamiliar, the story centers on a man who is abducted and imprisoned for 15 years, after which he’s inexplicably released and sent on a hunt to track down those responsible for his imprisonment. Chan-wook’s original is a hard-boiled revenge tale that culminates in a shocking/mind-blowing conclusion.
I’m wholeheartedly onboard with Firth as the villain, if only because a Brolin-Firth showdown sounds incredibly exciting. His casting may not be a done-deal though, as Variety’s Jeff Sneider tweeted that the deal is old news and Firth has passed. Hopefully we find out for sure soon. Rooney Mara was offered the female lead, but she subsequently (and sadly) turned it down, so Lee is also looking to fill that role.

The spy thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy continues to be one of my most anticipated films amongst the crowd of awards contender’s coming out this fall. The trailer is highly engrossing, the cast is top-notch, and the film debuted to strongly positive notices at the Venice Film Festival (not to mention that latest news that the pic may spawn a franchise). Now, a slew of character profiles have been released for the film. They give a rundown of pretty much every major character that appears, augmented by quotes from the actors who play them. It’s a pretty cool look into the espionage-fueled world of the film.
Hit the jump to check them out. The film stars Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Toby Jones, John Hurt, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy opens in the U.S. on December 9th.

What do you do after giving a rousing performance as the struggling King of England? You play a British POW, that’s what you do. The King’s Speech actor Colin Firth is now set to star in the adaptation of the non-fiction book The Railway Man. THR reports that Firth has boarded the drama which tells the true story of British army officer Eric Lomax, who was captured and tortured by the Japanese during World War II. Lomax was forced to work on the construction of the “death railway,” and later reconciled with one of his tormentors.
Jonathan Teplitzky (Burning Man) is directing the adaptation, while Frank Cottrell Boyce (Millions) and Andy Paterson are taking on scripting duties. Lionsgate International is currently shopping the project to buyers at the Toronto Film Festival. Firth will next be seen in the fantastic-looking spy thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, and also stars in the Coen brothers-scripted pic Gambit alongside Cameron Diaz, which is set for release sometime next year. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of The Railway Man.

The first U.S. trailer for director Tomas Alfredson’s (Let the Right One In) spy thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy has landed online. While it’s essentially just a mashup of the film’s two U.K. trailers, the score alone is worth the price of admission. For those unfamiliar, the film is based on the John le Carré novel and follows an ex-spy as he attempts to track down a double agent within the ranks of the MI-6. Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Toby Jones, John Hurt and Benedict Cumberbatch star.
Watch the new trailer after the jump. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy opens in the U.K. on September 16th and in the U.S. on December 9th.

A new poster and featurette for director Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy are now available online. Starring Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, John Hurt, Mark Strong, Toby Jones and Benedict Cumberbatch, the spy thriller is set during the Cold War and follows former spy George Smiley (Oldman) as he investigates a potential double agent within the MI-6 ranks. The cast is great, author John le Carré’s source material is highly celebrated and I love Alfredson’s Let the Right One In. To summarize, I can’t wait to see this movie.
Watch the featurette, which is basically an introduction to Oldman’s George Smiley, and check out the new poster after the jump. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy opens in the U.K. on September 16th and in the U.S. on December 9th.

Normally I don’t care much for “Wants” stories unless they give some hint as to the tone of a particular production. Wish lists are easy to make and they give zero indication to any concrete deal. But it’s Labor Day, news is almost non-existence, and we have to feed the content beast, so here’s two “Wants” stories. First up, E! News reports that Lars Von Trier wants his next film, the “sexually graphic” Nymphomaniac to star the prolific Stellan Skarsgard (most recently seen in Thor and latest this year in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). Skarsgard tells E! “Lars called me and said, ‘Stellan, my next film will be a porno film, and I want you to play the lead in it,’” he said, laughing. “But then he said, ‘You will not get to fuck.’” The film reportedly centers on “the erotic life of a woman from the age of zero to the age of 50,” so I’m not sure how Skarsgard figures in. Then again, with Von Trier it’s almost impossible to know what to expect beyond a vague outline.

New posters have gone online for Real Steel, The Ides of March, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. The Real Steel poster finally uses Hugh Jackman’s mug instead of his silhouette or the boxing robot’s camel-fist. Speaking of handsome faces, Ryan Gosling is a good-looking dude looking at fellow attractive gent George Clooney in the poster for the political thriller The Ides of March. I’ll let folks in the comments section debate who’s hotter (answer: Clooney). Finally, there’s a UK quad poster for Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy that’s packed with blurbs from British publications raving about the movie.
Hit the jump to check out the posters. Real Steel and The Ides of March open October 7th. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy opens in the UK on September 16th and in the US on December 9th.
