scandal

The new ABC drama series Scandal, premiering on April 5th from show creator Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice), follows Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington), a woman who had dedicated her life to protecting and defending the public images of the nation’s elite and keeping those secrets under wraps. A former communications director to the President of the United States (played by Tony Goldwyn), Olivia left the White House to open her own prominent crisis management firm, made up of individuals who specialize in fixing other people’s lives, but can’t manage to fix their own.

During this recent interview to promote the fast-paced and exciting new show, co-stars Katie Lowes (who plays Quinn Perkins, the new young woman in the office who is in awe of Olivia), Columbus Short (who plays slick litigator Harrison Wright), Darby Stanchfield (who plays investigator Abby Whelan) and Guillermo Diaz (who plays hacker extraordinaire Huck) talked about what attracted them to the show and the character they play, how challenging it is to do the dialogue at the pace they need to do it without ever missing a single word, how realistic they think this show and setting is, what you’ll learn about their characters over the course of the season, what it’s like to work with show star Kerry Washington, and what sets this drama series about from everything else that’s currently on television. THE LOSERS Blu-ray Review

by     Posted 3 years, 262 days ago

The action genre has mutated quite a bit over the last couple years, as we have few figures like Sylvester Stallone in the recent generation of actors. Vin Diesel seems more like a right place right time guy than an actual star, and actual stars like Tom Cruise in Knight and Day no longer seem to excite the masses. Of course there are exceptions: The Bourne Identity fits more in the classic mold, but does anyone think of Matt Damon in the same category as Arnold Schwarzenegger, or – for that matter – Charles Bronson? In 2010, we’ve seen a number of straight action films, but few have connected with the mainstream, and the actors who look like they might be the next star of those sorts of movies don’t connect. Liam Neeson or Bradley Cooper in The A-Team, and Angelina Jolie Salt have had so-so grosses, while The Losers got lost in April. But Jeffrey Dean Morgan seems built for the genre. Weathered but capable, bemused, Morgan has both the physicality and personality to be an action star, and he gets to play off of Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba, and Chris Evans in a classic “Men on a Mission” narrative. Sadly, The Losers isn’t the film that did that for him and my review of the Blu-ray follows after the jump.

THE LOSERS Review

Usually, I like to take my time in writing a movie review so I can let the film simmer for a bit and give it a bit of thought.  I had to rush home to write this review of The Losers because I started forgetting the movie almost as soon as I left the theater.  That’s the film’s intent: easily digestible entertainment.  It’s a cookie-cutter action film filled with explosions, wise-cracks, and hot sex between the male and female lead.  Thanks to the individual performances of the cast, The Losers rarely feels soulless, but due to the lack of chemistry between the actors, The Losers also never comes together to make a more lasting impression.

Tracy Morgan and Luke Wilson interview Death at a Funeral.jpg

I’ve always wondered if Tracy Morgan is playing himself on 30 Rock, or if it’s all an act.  Also, I’ve seen Morgan on David Letterman and have always wondered if he’s pulling an Andy Kaufman with the way he acts…or if it’s really him.  Based on the Los Angeles press junket for Death at a Funeral, I’m going to say it’s not an act.

The reason I can say that is while waiting in a hallway for my interview with Tracy Morgan and Luke Wilson, I got to hear Morgan saying some of the craziest things during other interviews.  Most of them are not safe to print – let alone say on television.  While we couldn’t hear everything behind the door, we heard enough that every journalist waiting and a few publicists were laughing a lot.   Actually, I felt added pressure walking in to my interview, as I was hoping to get some wild and crazy answers.  Hit the jump to see if I did….

james_marsden_image__2_.jpgOpening this weekend is director Neil LaBute’s Death at a Funeral, which stars Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence, Tracy Morgan, Zoë Saldaña, Columbus Short, Luke Wilson, Peter Dinklage, Danny Glover, Regina Hall, and Keith David.  The movie is a remake of the 2007 British film with the same name.  If you saw the previous version, the remake is the same story set in America.

To help promote the film, I recently got to speak with James Marsden.  In the film, Marsden gets accidentally drugged and spends most of the film dealing with vivid hallucinations.  While the film is a comedy, we talked about how he found the right balance for his performance.  He also told me about some of his deleted scenes, and I asked him what’s up with Enchanted 2.  Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Warner Bros. has released 7 clips from director Sylvain White’s The Losers, which stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoë Saldana, Chris Evans, Idris Elba, Columbus Short, Oscar Jaenada, and Jason Patric.  The clips feature all the actors as well as a lot of action.

I caught a screening the other day and the movie was better than I expected.   While it’s a tight 90 something minutes, all the actors have their moments and it’s got plenty of action and humor.  But while everyone was pretty good, Jason Patric was awesome as Max.  He plays the  guy who set up The Losers.  Another surprise…Chris Evans.  He’s steals a few scenes and had the theater laughing out loud.

Hit the jump for the clips.  The Losers gets released April 23.

ARMORED Blu-ray Review

by     Posted 4 years, 14 days ago

armored_movie_image_laurence_fishburne_and_matt_dillon slice.jpg

In theory, Armored should be an awesome movie. The idea of a bunch of security guards robbing their own armored truck sounds like a bad ass heist film. Just the premise gets the mind racing. What’s the plan? How do they plan on getting away with it? Unfortunately, the reality of Armored doesn’t touch on either of those things. Instead we’re left with an original idea told without original thought. And the Blu-ray is just more of the same. Read more after the jump.

I caught a press screening tonight of the film and it was better than I expected.   While the movie is a tight 90 something minutes, all the actors have their moments and it’s got plenty of action and humor.  But while everyone was pretty good, Jason Patric was awesome as Max.  He plays the  guy who set up The Losers.  Another surprise about the movie…Chris Evans.  He’s steals a scene or two and had the theater laughing out loud a few times.

Warner Bros. has released a ton of new images from  director Sylvain White’s The Losers, which stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoë Saldana, Chris Evans, Idris Elba, Columbus Short, Oscar Jaenada and Jason Patric.  The reason the images were released today is the press junket is this weekend in Los Angeles,  which means we’re also going to get a lot of clips from the film soon.

I’m catching a screening tonight and interviewing the cast this weekend, so expect a lot of Losers coverage in the coming days.  If I can, look for a tweet reaction after the screening tonight.  Until then, hit the jump to check out 36 high resolution images from the film:

Chris Evans and Columbus Short WonderCon Video Interview THE LOSERS

Chris Evans and Columbus Short Video Interview THE LOSERS - Wonder Con 2010.jpg

At this weekend’s WonderCon in San Francisco, I was able to speak with Chris Evans and Columbus Short on the Warner Bros. red carpet, as they were both attending the convention to promote The Losers.  Since I did a set visit last year for The Losers, they both remembered me and unlike some red carpet interviews that can be dry and serious, the interview you’re about to watch features a lot of laughter and jokes.

Also, while I REALLY wanted to ask Chris Evans a lot of The First Avenger: Captain America questions, I was asked to keep the focus of the interview on The Losers. Also, I’m sure Evans has been asked by Marvel not to say anything…so I decided to play nice.  Sort of.  Watch time index 3:43.  You’ll see what I mean.

Columbus Short On Set Interview THE LOSERS – Read or Listen Here

Columbus_Short (2).jpg

Last September, I got to visit the set of director Sylvain White’s The Losers when the film was being shot in Puerto Rico.  While I’ve already posted a number of the on set interviews and my set report, I’ve got a few more interviews and tonight’s is with Columbus Short.

In The Losers, Short plays Pooch and he’s the family man with the witty and sarcastic responses.  Basically, he gets to deliver all the cool one-liners.  While on set, he talked about his character, making the film, the action, the comic it’s based on, filming in Puerto Rico, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to read the transcript or listen to the audio of the interview.

Chris Evans On Set Interview THE LOSERS – Read or Listen Here

by     Posted 4 years, 29 days ago

Chris Evans - slice.jpg

You want to know why Chris Evans is always going to be cool in my book? Because when I was on the set of The Losers in Puerto Rico last June, when it was incredibly hot and humid, Evans had the five online journalists in attendance come into his trailer to do his interview, as he had air conditioning and was willing to share it.  Trust me, I’ve done a lot of on set interviews in some sketchy areas, and no other actor has ever opened his door like Chris Evans.

Anyway, during our extended interview with Evans, he talked about how he plays a computer expert named Jensen and if he’s anything like him, did he debate playing another comic book based character, 80′s movies, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, his career, Fantastic Four, and so much more.  It’s a great interview so take a look:
