Thor and Iron Man have no problem getting around at supersonic speeds, but not every superhero can fly. So what happens when The Avengers need to assemble to save the day, but saving the day isn’t in walking distance? They take the Quinjet. What is the Quinjet? Glad you asked. Wikipedia:
Used primarily by the Avengers, the quinjet first appeared in The Avengers #61 (February 1969) and was designed by the Wakanda Design Group, headed by the Black Panther, T’Challa. Each one is equipped with VTOL capability and five turbojet engines. A quinjet can reach Mach 2.1. Two highly specialized ultra-large Quinjets were used to transport various superheroes through space in the Infinity Crusade mini-series. Quinjets are infamous for being destroyed soon after they appear. Also, in the New Avengers/Transformers crossover, the Decepticon Ramjet escapes, disguised as Captain America’s quinjet.
After the jump, you can check out some concept art for the Quinjet. Keep in mind that this may not be what it looks like in the final film. The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4th.

Blade Runner was released almost 30 years ago, but it seems like new material will always continue to surface, and now director Ridley Scott and production designer Syd Mead’s out-of-print Blade Runner sketchbook has gone online. It would cost you hundreds of dollars to buy a used version, but some good-hearted human being has decided to take his rare copy, scan the pages, and post them online. I haven’t watched Blade Runner in years so I don’t really have any favorite images from the sketchbook (although I can certainly continue to appreciate Mead’s brilliant designs). But for fans of Scott’s classic sci-fi flick, this a must-see.
Hit the jump to read the entire book, which includes artwork for sequences and concepts that were never filmed (like Tyrell’s Cyrpto-Crypt and Zhora’s Orgasma Mask). Scott plans to revisit the world of Blade Runner for his next movie, and he says “it’s liable to be a sequel.”

We saw the first image from production on The Wachowskis‘ Cloud Atlas last week. The photo teased fans of the book with various artifacts strewn about the room, but left the rest of us in the dark as to what Cloud Atlas will look like. A new image has surfaced along with two pieces of concept art that provide a little more insight. One of the images is labeled “Seoul, 2144.” Unsurprisingly, a futuristic world imagined by The Wachowskis and co-director Tom Tykwer is very enticing.
The movie is an ambitious adaptation of the book by David Mitchell, which tells six stories that span multiple continents and centuries. Halle Barry, Hugh Grant, Tom Hanks, Susan Sarandon, Hugo Weaving, Ben Whishaw, James D’Arcy, and Jim Sturgess will play multiple roles in the film. Hit the jump to check out the images.

We’ve seen what The Amazing Spider-Man villain The Lizard looks like in PEZ Dispenser-form, and now some concept art of the character may have leaked online. It’s possible this came from the production, but it’s also possible that some fan just tweaked what they saw at Comic-Con and posted the illustration online. As we said in our report on the film’s Comic-Con presentation, The Lizard looks closer to the Batman villain Killer Croc. This concept art shows a leaner version of the character, and the mouth is smaller and less toothy. Again, if this is concept art, then it’s just one of hundreds of designs that won’t resemble anything you’ll see on the big screen next summer. However, it may be a good idea for Sony to finally release an official image of Spidey’s new foe.

The long-in-development Riddick is finally closing in on its start date. Producer and star Vin Diesel has been keeping fans updated by posting on his Facebook page and sharing pieces of concept art. Yesterday, Diesel showed off some concept art for Necro-armor. As you may recall from The Chronicles of Riddick (or not, which is fine because it’s not a good movie), the Necromongers are the bad guys and they’ll be factoring into the plot for the upcoming sequel. The concept art is only one design for the Necro-armor and it doesn’t look like it will be used since Diesel commented, “Haha, I had to share.” Diesel added the movie “starts principal photography in weeks” and re-confirmed the R-rating.
Hit the jump to check out the concept art. Riddick also stars Karl Urban.

Vin Diesel continues to play to his fans by releasing another piece of concept art from Riddick. On his Facebook page, Diesel says that the fight to get the film an R-rating has indirectly led to an extensive pre-production phase. I’m hoping that the film hits production soon because if Diesel keeps posting this concept art, he may inadvertently spoil his own movie. You’ll understand what I mean if you click through to see the whole concept art and read the tiny description in the lower right-hand corner.
Hit the jump to check out the full image but beware a possible spoiler.

Pre-production on Riddick churns on and Vin Diesel has bestowed his Facebook fans with a new piece of concept art. I hope folks don’t consider this to be a spoiler because if you didn’t think that Riddick could get blood splattered on his face, then you probably aren’t familiar with the Riddick films. However, if it’s chocolate getting splattered on his face, then I have no idea what to expect from this sequel.
Diesel also told fans that shooting will begin in Canada, a country that also played host to shooting on The Chronicles of Riddick. Let’s hope the third film in the franchise plays better (going for an R-rating is a push in the right direction). Hit the jump to check out the concept art and a statement from Diesel on the film.

At this year’s Comic-Con, Summit released some concept art from The Darkest Hour and they recently unveiled the trailer. In addition, I was able to interview Emile Hirsh, Joel Kinnaman with Max Minghella, as well as director Chris Gorak (Right at Your Door, art director of Fight Club). With the embargo starting to lift on the set visit, Summit has sent over some additional concept art and it’s pretty cool. Check it out after the jump.

I usually don’t go for fan-made posters that try to approach something that will probably look like the real poster. Photoshopping the heads of the actors tends not to work out too well so it’s better to just go with an original design. But there are exceptions to the photoshopping rule. One exception is this terrific fan-made poster for The Avengers. All the pieces of concept art combine to form a banner. But one unnamed fan (who should please step forward and get a hearty congratulation for his or her work) photoshopped pieces of the concept art and combined them into a sweet looking poster. You’ve been one-upped, Marvel.
Hit the jump to check out the fan-made poster. The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4, 2012.

Last week, writer/director/producer Robert Rodriguez announced at Comic-Con that he had acquired the rights to turn legendary artist Frank Frazetta’s “Fire and Ice” into a live-action film. For those unfamiliar with Frazetta’s work, the late artist currently holds spots in the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame and Jack Kirby Hall of Fame respectively and is known for painting movie posters (such as Clint Eastwood’s The Gauntlet), paperback editions of adventure texts (Conan, Tarzan, and John Carter of Mars come to mind), and album covers (including three for Molly Hatchet).
Fire and Ice was originally adapted into an animated film in 1983 by Frazetta and director Ralph Bakshi (1978′s The Lord of the Rings). Check out the new concept art, which Rodriguez developed with his team at Quick Draw Entertainment, and a quick synopsis after the jump. Briefly, Fire and Ice is a fantasy tale which features plenty of sword-wielding and saving of kidnapped princesses from evil sorcerers.

Legendary Pictures has released the first concept art for Lucifer in Alex Proyas’ adaptation of John Milton’s Paradise Lost. The film was part of Legendary Pictures’ pre-production panel at Comic-Con and while I was unable to attend, Hunter called it the most impressive film on the panel and if it lives up to the concept art they were shown, “this movie could be one of the most visually breathtaking things ever projected on the silver screen.” Hopefully, Legendary will release more concept art for the film in the coming weeks.
Milton’s epic poem chronicles Lucifer’s fall from Heaven and his role in leading Adam and Eve to original sin. Proyas says the adaptation will be “an incredible epic film about the Devil’s fall from grace and the Archangel Michael. Adam and Eve play heavily in it as well. This film couldn’t have been made a few years ago. In fact, we’re not even sure we can make it now. But we’re gonna try.” Hit the jump to check out the concept art. The film stars Bradley Cooper, will use motion capture, and is set for a late 2013 release.

Marvel has released the final banner from its collection of exclusive Comic-Con concept art posters for The Avengers. On top of the art being pretty stellar, it’s really just nice to see the whole gang together on one sheet. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, and Scarlett Johansson, writer/director Joss Whedon’s The Avengers hits theaters next summer on May 4th. Hit the jump to check out the final banner and each individual poster. Vin Diesel, who does it all for the fans, has released some concept art from Riddick 3. Recently, Diesel pretended to hem and haw over whether or not he should take a pay cut for a film he’s supposedly been passionate it about for years, but it looks like the project is moving forward with shooting likely to begin this September. As a birthday present for Diesel, Riddick director David Twohy sent along some concept art for the film and Diesel has now shared the concept art on his Facebook page. The way the image is drawn, it looks like Riddick destroyed a planet and half a mountain with a knife. He apparently also has a new pet.

“I’ve tried really hard to capture what I thought was universal and timeless about this book that is above and beyond the genre itself.” – Andrew Stanton
After hearing director Andrew Stanton (WALL·E, Finding Nemo) talk passionately for almost an hour about his first live-action movie, John Carter, in San Francisco last week, I’m convinced he’s the right person to finally bring Edgar Rice Burroughs celebrated novel to the big screen. Not only is he a lifelong fan of the material, but his behind the scenes team is packed wall-to-wall with lifelong Burroughs fans. In addition, while some filmmakers might cling to the source material and treat it like a Bible that they refuse to diverge from, Stanton is smart enough to know that some things that read great on the page won’t translate to the screen, though that doesn’t mean a Thark won’t still be a 9 to 10-foot tall green alien with 4 arms and tusks.
But let me back up a second.
With Disney releasing the first teaser trailer for John Carter later this week (it’ll be on Harry Potter and also online), today marks the very beginning of the Studio’s campaign to promote the movie. To help make that happen, they invited a few online reporters to Northern California to watch some footage, the teaser trailer, and also speak with producer Jim Morris and director Andrew Stanton. If you’ve been looking forward to John Carter, or you’re just a fan of Stanton and curious about his next movie, hit the jump for 20 things to know about the movie and an awesome interview (both audio and transcript) with the great director.

New images from Marvel’s Thor have been released. Additionally, Disney has released new images and concept art from the upcoming animated short The Ballad of Nessie. Hit the jump to check out the images. Thor opens in 3D on May 6th. The Ballad of Nessie will play in front of Disney’s Winnie the Pooh on July 15th.
