January suffered another down weekend, with estimated grosses for the top ten films down almost 56% over this weekend in 2010. Paramount had reason to celebrate, as True Grit outdrew Little Fockers in the weekend race for the first time. Season of the Witch, 2011’s first new title, struggled while Sony/SG’s Country Strong did modest business in its first expanded nationwide run.
| Title | Weekend | Total | |

Despite overwhelmingly negative reviews, audiences came out in force to see Vince Vaughn, Kristin Bell and Jon Favreau frolic on the beach in “Couples Retreat” this weekend. The PG-13 comedy bested Universal’s highest hopes by bringing in over $35 million in its first three days. But despite all that cash, “Couples Retreat” is not this weekend’s big box office story. That honor goes to the independent horror movie “Paranormal Activity” – the spiritual beneficiary of the shaky hand-cam and savvy marketing plan that “Blair Witch” built.
| Title | Weekend | Total | |
| 1 | Couples Retreat | $35,340,000 | $35,340,000 |
| 2 | Zombieland | $15,000,000 | $47,801,000 |
| 3 | Cloudy w/a Chance | $12,000,000 | $96,251,000 |
| 4 | Toy Story 1 & 2 3D | $7,674,000 | $22,676,000 |
| 5 | Paranormal Activity | $7,066,000 | $8,280,000 |
| 6 | Surrogates | $4,115,000 | $32,573,000 |
| 7 | Invention of Lying | $3,370,000 | $12,327,000 |
| 8 | Whip It | $2,800,000 | $8,766,000 |
| 9 | Capitalism: A Love Story | $2,700,000 | $9,095,000 |
| 10 | Fame | $2,556,000 | $20,042,000 |

This is why Vince Vaughn is known as box office gold. A typical Vaughn comedy has a reasonable price tag and reaps big returns… if not always big laughs. The actor made the new bosses over at Universal very happy on Friday as “Couples Retreat” opened to over $12.3 million from 3,000 screens. It didn’t hurt that the PG-13 comedy was the only wide release of the week, of course. Meanwhile, Sony is still feeling the love with “Zombieland” at number two and their 3D toon-that-could, “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs”, losing little monetary momentum at number three. But the real momentum this week belongs to Paramount. The studio’s indie horror pick-up “Paranormal Activity” moved from midnight-only screenings in a handful of cities to 159 venues (at all hours) on Friday. With marketing being handled mainly by fans and social networkers, the studio can just sit back and count the cash as it rolls in. Already the $11,000 pic has earned $3.7 million total. Check back tomorrow to see exactly how much word-of-mouth will be worth this time.
| Title | Friday | Total | |
| 1 | Couples Retreat | $12,300,000 | $12,300,000 |
| 2 | Zombieland | $4,800,000 | $37,600,000 |
| 3 | Cloudy w/a Chance | $3,100,000 | $87,400,000 |
| 4 | Paranormal Activity | $2,500,000 | $3,700,000 |
| 5 | Toy Story 1 & 2 3D | $2,000,000 | $17,000,000 |

“Couples Retreat” is the most vanilla kind of comedy you can find in a non-family film. Its “edgy” jokes are tired to the point of a coma, it provides no challenge to its cast, and every minute of the movie feels four times as long as none of the four couples have any resonance or complication that can’t be overcome with a nice heart-to-heart. On top of all that you have product placement so tacky and completely without irony that I feel a more appropriate title would be “Guitar Hero and Applebee’s Present Couples Retreat”. Continued after the jump:

Opening tomorrow is director Peter Billingsly’s “Couples Retreat”. The movies about four couples that decided to go to a tropical resort and work out their marital problems and have some fun. Along for the ride are Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Malin Akerman, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell and Faizon Love. Anyway, to help promote the film, Universal recently held an international press day in Los Angeles and our partners at Omelete asked me to cover it. So thanks to them, you can watch my interview with Vince Vaughn and Malin Akerman after the jump. They talked about how the film came together, Guitar Hero, filming in Bora Bora, and a lot more:

As most of you are aware, opening tomorrow is director Peter Billingsly’s “Couples Retreat”. The film was written by Jon Favreau, Vince Vaughn & Dana Fox and it’s about four couples that go away to a tropical resort to try and work out their marital problems and have some fun. Along for the ride are Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Malin Akerman, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell and Faizon Love. Anyhow, Universal recently held an international press day and our partners at Omelete asked me to cover it. So thanks to them, after the jump you can watch my interview with Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell. As you might imagine when dealing with these two, the interview was a lot of fun and they were great together. I think you’ll like it.

The last few weeks have seen Universal promoting the hell out of “Couples Retreat”. They’ve flown a lot of press to Bora Bora, they’ve had the cast in Australia, and they’ve even done press in Los Angeles for many international territories. Thankfully, our partners at Omelete were invited to the international press day, and they sent me to talk with the cast. So after the jump you can see my interview with Faizon Love and Kali Hawk. In the film, Faizon plays one of the guys in a large group of friends. His story is that he recently got separated from his wife and he’s hooked with a much younger girl, played by Kali Hawk. During our interview they talk about filming in Bora Bora, working with the rest of the actors, Kali tells a great story about getting cast, and they talk about what’s coming up. Take a look:

Less than a month ago I spoke with Jason Bateman and managed to get updates on “Hancock 2″ and “Arrested Development”. At the time, nothing had been officially announced regarding a “Hancock” sequel, and Jason didn’t think the story had any substance. But in the past month, Adam Fierro and Glen Mazzara have been hired to write the screenplay, and Variety reported “Will Smith, Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman are gearing up to reunite for the sequel to Columbia Pictures’ “Hancock,” with Peter Berg set to helm the action-comedy.”
But earlier today when I covered the “Couples Retreat” international press day for our partners at Omelete, Jason told me, “I don’t know where that writer gets their information from as I haven’t been contacted, nor have my representatives.”
More after the jump…including another update on “Arrested Development” and Jason reveals what he got as a wrap gift on the upcoming Pegg/Frost/Mottola film “Paul”.

Ever since “Old School” became a hit back in 2003, there have been whispers of the cast reuniting and doing a sequel. Unfortunately, the more time that passes, the less of a chance it’s ever going to happen.
But even though the chances are slim, whenever I interview someone from the film, I always ask about the sequel. And since I covered the “Couples Retreat” international press day for our partners at Omelete earlier today, I had the chance to speak with Vince Vaughn during a roundtable interview. What he said about “Old School 2″ and what he’s doing next is after the jump.

Earlier today I did an article on new posters for “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans”, “Sorority Row” and Spike Jonze “Where the Wild Things Are”. I figured that would be it for new posters today. I thought wrong.
That’s because as soon as I walked out my door, five other posters premiered online and like I did before, I’ve grouped them all in one place. Also, how much can you really say about new posters? They’re less about words and more about the visuals. So after the jump take a look at new posters for “The Road”, “2012″, “Couples Retreat”, “The Fantastic Mr. Fox”, and “The Descent Part 2″.

I usually don’t put a lot of weight towards the MPAA ratings but after watching this trailer for “Couples Retreat”, I need to know whether or not this film is PG-13 or R. If it’s PG-13, I’m afraid we’re looking at a fairly toothless relationship comedy where the guys like Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Jason Bateman, and Faizon Love are pulling their punches.
If it’s an R-rated comedy, I think we may have something look forward to. Also, they’ve got some funny ladies in the cast and I hope we get to see more of their comedic talents than we do here. Hit the jump to watch the trailer. “Couples Retreat” hits theatres on October 9th.

Last night I covered the 2009 Saturn Awards and managed to land tons of interviews on the red carpet. The one you’re about to watch is with Kristen Bell. During my limited time we talked about all her upcoming projects like “Astro Boy”, “Couples Retreat”, “When in Rome” and “You Again”. Watch the interview after the jump:
