Seth Rogen’s Directorial Debut THE APOCALYPSE in Negotiations with Sony

Hoping to hop on the apocalyptic bandwagon that will surely never get annoying in 2012, Sony Pictures has entered into negotiations to finance and distribute The Apocalypse, an end of days comedy marking the directorial debut of Seth Rogen. Written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg from a story by Jason Stone, the pic was inspired by a short film called Jay and Seth vs The Apocalypse. In it, Rogen and Jay Baruchel play their real life selves while they ride out the end of the world in their apartment. Since two movie stars cooped up during Armageddon clearly isn’t enough, the project has expanded to include James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson now residing in Franco’s (presumably larger?) Los Angeles apartment. We previously reported that the pic would start shooting in February, but it looks as if that will be pushed back until spring. Hit the jump for more on The Apocalypse.

THE OFFICE Season 7 DVD Review

In the seventh season of The Office, the writers of the long-running NBC comedy series had two big tasks ahead of them. First, the staff had to deal with the impending exit of manager Michael Scott (Steve Carell) which included giving him a worthy exit and finding him a strong replacement, but also proving that the show would be able to survive without the presence of Carell on-screen. Sadly, this season proved to be one of the weakest, and seems to be proof that the series, just like its former star, might be on the way out. However, the seventh season of The Office still contains some truly great episodes, genuinely touching moments, and one marathon of a fantastic performance from Steve Carell (who should’ve won the Emmy over Jim Parsons last month). For more of my impressions of the DVD release of the seventh season of The Office, hit the jump.

Jonah Hill, James Franco, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson Join Jay Baruchel and Seth Rogen in JAY AND SETH VS. THE APOCALYPSE

A few weeks ago, we reported that Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel had decided to add many more cast members to their post-apocalyptic comedy Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse. The actor was remiss to reveal just who else would be joining the duo, but today he apparently decided was a good day to disclose that information. Rogen confirmed that Jonah Hill, James Franco, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson will also be starring in the flick. Rogen wrote the film with his Superbad writing partner Evan Goldberg, and the duo are set to make their directorial debut with the project (which is now shaping up to be the Valentine’s Day of Apatowian comedies, except with way less suckage). Hit the jump for more, including who won’t be starring in the film.

Trailer, Poster, and Images from FATHER OF INVENTION Starring Kevin Spacey

by Jason Barr    Posted: August 11th, 2011 at 6:03 pm

A promotional onslaught is in effect for director Trent Cooper’s comedy Father of Invention as a new trailer, poster, and a slew of new images from the film have gone online. Starring Kevin Spacey, Heather Graham, Craig Robinson, Virginia Madsen, Johnny Knoxville, John Stamos, and Camilla Belle, the film centers on a former infomercial guru (Spacey) who finds himself in prison after a design flaw in one of his inventions de-fingers many of his customers. From there, Father of Invention looks to document Spacey’s attempted return to “As Seen on TV” glory.

The pic looks a little formulaic in its “Guy A is a bad person who must first learn how to change himself before he can really make any sort of difference” approach. Nevertheless, the cast is great and when compared to Cooper’s last directorial effort, Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector, I’m sure Father of Invention is awards-season material. Hit the jump to check out the trailer, poster, images, and an official synopsis for the film. Father of Invention opens on October 14th.

Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser and Craig Robinson Set for FREAKY DEAKY

A trio of actors have signed on for Charles Matthau’s (The Grass Harp) adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel Freaky Deaky. Variety reports that Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser and Craig Robinson will star in the Hollywood-centered crime flick. Dillon will star as an LAPD bomb squad officer who happens upon a plot hatched by two hippies who plan to scam a movie mogul using their bomb-making skills. Fraser plays a former activist who now puts his bomb-knowledge to work as a Hollywood pyrotechnics and demolition expert, and Robinson is poised to play a former Black Panther who now serves as the assistant to Fraser’s character.

In pitch-perfect casting, William H. Macy is already set to star as the alcoholic Hollywood mogul that the two hippie characters attempt to scam. The other day we heard that Sienna Miller may be starring in the film, but she wasn’t mentioned in Variety’s report today. Matthau will direct, and adapted Leonard’s novel himself. The film version will take place in 1974 instead of Leonard’s late 80’s setting of the book. While Fraser is used to starring in what can mildly be described as horseshit as of late, the other actors involved sound promising. It’ll be interesting to see who Matthau gets to fill out the rest of his cast. Production is set to start this summer in Michigan. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of Leonard’s book.

Anna Kendrick and John Francis Daley in Talks to Join RAPTUREPALOOZA

Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air) and John Francis Daley (Bones) are in talks to join Craig Robinson in the apocalypse comedy Rapturepalooza.   The story centers on a couple (presumably Kendrick and Daley) trying to run a sandwich shop after the Rapture has sucked up all the God-fearing folk.  Matters are made worse when the Anti-Christ (Robinson) chooses Kendrick’s character to be his new bride.  THR reports that Paul Middleditch will direct from Chris Matheson’s script, which is described as “Zombieland meets The Big Lebowski“.  Rapturepalooza is the first film under Lionsgate’s new “microbudget” initiative to create films that cost $2 million or less.

Kendrick recently co-starred in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and will next be seen alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen in the cancer dramedy 50/50.  As for Daley, in addition to co-starring on Bones, he’s got a successful screenwriting career going.  He co-wrote the script for the upcoming comedies Horrible Bosses and Burt Wonderstone, and last February he was hired to co-write a remake of National Lampoon’s Vacation with writing partner Jonathan Goldstein.

Spurred by the success of low-budget features like Paranormal Activity, Lionsgate has announced three “microbudget” films in its upcoming slate.  The comedies Rapturepalooza and Gay Dude along with the horror film 6 Miranda Drive, will all be made for under $2 million a piece.  Lionsgate currently has up to 10 films planned under its new microbudget umbrella.

Craig Robinson to Play Anti-Christ in RAPTUREPALOOZA

Craig Robinson rarely gets leading roles, but that’s okay since he ends up stealing the movie or TV show he’s on anyway.  His latest gig doesn’t look like it will change his M.O. as he’s signed on to play the Anti-Christ in the comedy Rapturepalooza.  The script has a great premise: the story is set a year after the Rapture and half the world’s population has been beamed up to the heaven spaceship.  In between blood rainstorms and talking locusts and other fun post-religious apocalyptic events that religious folks are totally cool with letting the rest of us endure, main characters Ben and Lindsey are trying to run a sandwich cart business.  Matters are made worse when the Anti-Christ chooses Lindsay to be his new bride.

Deadline reports that the project is gearing up for a spring start at Lionsgate.  Robinson, who will shoot the project while on hiatus from The Office, will also serve as an executive producer on the film.

HOT TUB TIME MACHINE DVD Review

by Gil Kellerman    Posted: June 19th, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Hot Tub Time Machine is way better than it has any right to be.  It’s the story of three forty-something men, Adam (John Cusack), Lou (Rob Cordry) and Nick (Craig Robinson).  Once upon a time, twenty years ago, the guys were best friends who would cut loose at a ski resort in Kodiak Valley.  None of them are happy with the current states of their lives, highlighted by Lou’s recent episode of falling asleep in a parked car/suicide attempt (the exact verdict here depends on who’s making the call).  In an attempt to relive some past glory, the trio – along with Adam’s nephew Jacob (Clark Duke) – rolls to Kodiak Valley.  Only the place is nowhere near what they remembered it as.  It’s now a fallen paradise of boarded up shops and ratty hangouts.  And that’s when a repairman played by Chevy Chase shows up to fix the broken hot tub in their nasty motel room.  After he tinkers with it, the guys hop in and soon find themselves back in 1986 – the last year they rocked it in Kodiak.  More after the jump:

Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, Antonio Banderas and Ryan Seacrest Interview SHREK FOREVER AFTER

Last weekend, DreamWorks Animation held a press day for Shrek Forever After (also known as Shrek the Final Chapter).  While some press days feature roundtable interviews with some of the cast, DreamWorks pulled out the big guns as they got the entire voice cast to talk to the press – including Eddie Murphy.  For those that don’t know, Murphy rarely does any press.  In fact, I’ve worked for five years at Collider and this was the first time I’ve ever seen him do any.

Anyway, if you’d like to hear what Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, Antonio Banderas, Jon Hamm, Walt Dohrn, Craig Robinson and Ryan Seacrest had to say about Shrek Forever After…hit the jump.  I’ve included a transcript of the press conference as well as the audio.  This is one of those interviews that’s much better to listen to.

HOT TUB TIME MACHINE Review

It’s no small feat to set a movie in the 80s without drowning in nostalgia, making too many winking asides to decade’s sillier aspects, and poke fun at the time travel genre at the same time, but Hot Tub Time Machine manages to pull it off.  The film is at its best when it’s fearlessly silly and allows its leads to be as disgusting, confused, profane, and as over-the-top as the scene requires.   The triple threat of comedic actors Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke make the movie one that you’ll be laughing steadily throughout and discussing your favorite jokes after you leave.

Rob Corddry, Clark Duke, and Craig Robinson Interview HOT TUB TIME MACHINE

You’re going to see the phrase “[laughs]” a lot during this interview because Rob Corddry, Clark Duke, and Craig Robinson are, unsurprisingly, hilarious.  They’re all fantastic in their new movie Hot Tub Time Machine, and chances are that if you’re laughing at something in that movie, it’s because one of these guys delivered a joke.

I tried my best to get the tone of the interview right, but I’ll just put it this way: Corddry was cracking jokes left and right, Clark Duke has a wit so fast it will make your head spin, and Robinson was delightfully deadpan.  Among the topics discussed was advertising on porn sites, previous versions of the script, what accent people from the future would talk with, and Craig’s band, Nasty Deliciously, performing in the film.  Hit the jump to read the interview although be warned there are some spoilers.

Director Steve Pink Interview HOT TUB TIME MACHINE

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 23rd, 2010 at 2:50 pm

slice_hot_tub_time_machine_set_image_director_steve_pink.jpg

Some writer-directors of comedy movies aren’t funny in interviews.  It’s surprising, but it happens.  However, Steve Pink is not one of those people.  He’s also very smart.  He wrote Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity and directed the underrated Accepted. His latest film, Hot Tub Time Machine, is damn funny and he had the skill to pull off a film that embraced the silliness of the 1980s but never insulted it.

I got to interview Pink at a press junket for the film a couple weeks ago.  Among other topics, we discussed the references in the film, how it approached the 80s versus the present, the mechanics of time travel and how to balance it with the comedy, and the film’s fantastic soundtrack.  There was also a long discussion about a moral question the film poses but since that involves the ending, I’ve stationed it off with spoiler alert tags.

Matt Jumps into the HOT TUB TIME MACHINE 80s Party

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 20th, 2010 at 10:58 am

slice_hot_tub_time_machine_80s_party.jpg

Last weekend, I headed to Lake Tahoe to do the press junket for Hot Tub Time Machine.  Before I continue, let me say that film is damn funny and that’s good because I would have felt conflicted about having an awesome time at the 80s party MGM threw the following night if I hadn’t enjoyed the film.  The reason it was an 80s party is that the film centers on four guys (played by Rob Corddry, John Cusack, Clark Duke, and Craig Robinson) who travel back to 1986 and Corddry, Cusack, and Robinson’s characters get a redo when they discover that their rose-colored nostalgia glasses aren’t worth shit.

After the jump, you’ll find all the photos I took at the party as well as some of the beautiful scenery and the casino in the hotel where money goes away.  I’ve only noted myself and the stars in the photos, but if you attended the party and want to be credited (or if you want your photo taken down), let me know and I’ll update the caption (or take down the photo).

Two Featurettes and Four Clips for HOT TUB TIME MACHINE

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 19th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Hot Tub Time Machine movie image slice.jpg

We just got sent two featurettes and four clips for the upcoming time-travel/80s-parody Hot Tub Time Machine.  One featurette focuses on Chevy Chase who plays an irritatingly (to the characters) cryptic hot tub repairman and the other focuses on Crispin Glover whose character is part of the one of the greatest running gags of all-time.

We also have four clips and they’re good but it looks like MGM is holding the painfully hilarious stuff for those that go to see the movie.  And it’s a movie folks should go see it.  I saw the flick last weekend and it’s damn funny, especially Rob Corddry who has finally found his breakout role.

Hit the jump to check out the featurettes, clips, and official synopsis.  Hot Tub Time Machine hits theaters on March 26th. [Update: We have temporarily removed the featurettes at the request of the studio]
