Imagine living in a time where you put forth a theory in which, “…the world stopped believing that God had any sort of plan for us? Nothing mattered. Not love, trust, faith – not honor. Only brute survival.” Now imagine that time is 1850s England and you are a scientist – very much living in a world where God is to be feared and has created all things great and small. You come up with a brave, new radical theory on human evolution. Would you risk everything – your professional reputation, standing in society, friends and family to put forward your radical new idea? This is the crux of what Creation wrestles with. It tells the story of Charles Darwin (Paul Bettany) and his tortuous struggle to produce his best known work, “On the Origin of Species.” More after the jump:

Before getting to the interview with Jennifer Connelly let me say a few quick words on Focus Features’ upcoming “9″ movie….go see the film as I thought it was great. After all, you paid to see tons of crap this summer, so plunk down your cabbage for a decent film for a change.
Anyway, in “9″, Jennifer Connelly tackles her first voice over role as 7, a tough as nails warrior who just happens to be tiny. At the “9″ junket, Jennifer talked about working in a sound studio as opposed to on a soundstage, as well as the upcoming “Creation” with husband Paul Bettany. As I wrote when I posted the new images from “Mr. Nobody” and “The White Ribbon”, the Toronto Film Festival starts in a few weeks and like every year, the Festival is loaded with plenty of world premieres. While I had planned on attending this year’s festival as a member of the working press, due to my deciding to attend too late, I missed the cut for getting a press badge. However, I’m still going, and hope to be able to report on the films and interview a lot of the people attending.
Anyway, with the festival gearing up to start, I’ve been provided with a lot of new images from the films premiering. So after the jump take a look at images from Jane Campion’s “Bright Star”, “Creation”, “Defendor”, and “Solitary Man”.

To mark the 200th anniversary of his birth, the Toronto Film Festival has decided to open its 34th year with “Creation”, Jon Amiel’s biopic of controversial scientist Charles Darwin starring Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly. Of course, I only say “controversial” for American readers as just about everyone else in the civilized world accepts Darwin’s discoveries as fact rather than having school boards slap stickers into text books warning kids that it’s only a “theory” and they should also consider far more convincing arguments like the world was created in seven days.
Hit the jump to find out what other films will be debuting at this year’s highly-anticipated festival.
Charles Darwin is not one of the most controversial people of all time. His defining work, “On The Origin of the Species”, is one of the most controversial books of all time (because, to quote GOB, “I heard the jury’s still out on…science.”). But if you forget that the book is different than the man, then perhaps you can take the drama from his controversy and use it as a hook for his biopic.
That looks to be what “Creation” is trying to do with this trailer. I’m not saying that Darwin’s life was dull, but it definitely looks like a drama played with modern understanding. I’m sure Darwin was aware of the explosiveness of his claims, but you can feel the modern “debate” at the edges of the frame and it looks like all hope for subtlety may rest with the gifted performers at the center of the film, Paul Bettany as Darwin and Jennifer Connelly as his wife Emma.
Check out the trailer after the jump and leave your thoughts in the comments section. “Creation” hits theatres in the UK on September 25th and probably never here in the states because it’s TOO CONTROVERSIAL!
