In February, we reported that Disney and Pixar would be attaching a new Toy Story short to The Muppets. At this weekend’s D23 Expo, the film’s director, Angus MacLane (“BURN-E”), announced that the short will be titled “Small Fry” and like “Toy Story: Hawaiian Vacation”, the whole gang will be back. According to The Pixar Times, “attendees were treated to the short but substantial clip, which gave away a few plot points. Looks like Buzz Lightyear is left behind at a fast-food restaurant and must find his way back home. In doing so he encounters some less popular, happy meal-like toys. One of those toys, a Mermaid of sorts, will be voiced by Glee‘s Jane Lynch.”
Since I skipped Cars 2, I haven’t seen “Hawaiian Vacation”, but it’s tough to go wrong with the Toy Story crew, this premise sounds fun, and “BURN-E” is a quality short. You can check out “Toy Story: Small Fry” when The Muppets opens on November 23rd.

Disney is probably done with Comic-Con for good. The studio now has its own convention, the D23 Expo, and they’re using it to promote their upcoming films. This year, D23 will have presentations for The Avengers, The Muppets, John Carter, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, Brave, Wreck-It Ralph, Frankenweenie, Oz the Great and Powerful, and more. The presentations will include appearances from Jason Segel, Taylor Kitsch, Kelly Macdonald, Jennifer Garner, Jack McBrayer, unnamed cast members from The Avengers, “and other surprise guests.”
Hit the jump for the full press release, which also announces presentations from the Pixar Creative team, a behind-the-scenes look at Monsters University, an advanced screening of The Lion King 3D and more. The D23 Expo runs from August 19 – 21st at the Anaheim Convention Center. Collider will be on hand to cover the event.

Jerry Bruckheimer and Nicolas Cage made a special appearance today at D23 and showed off trailers for two of next years big summer films, “Prince of Persia: The Sand of Time”, and “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”. I’ve been curious about “Prince of Persia” for a while now since I’ve played and loved the game. I’ve been hoping that it would finally be the “one”. By this I mean that it would finally by the first video game movie that actually turned out to be good.
Meanwhile, I’ve just been curious about “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” because it’s based off of the iconic Fantasia segment and features Nicolas Cage as the sorcerer and Jay Baruchel as his apprentice. It’s been a big “why?” to me since it was first announced, but I’m definitely interested in seeing how it turns out. You can now get a full trailer breakdown for both films when you click on the jump.

As you might know, D23 is currently happening right now. As expected, we are being flooded by new Disney news. One of the many new bits of news that has popped out today is an update on the new Muppet movie. You might remember that Jason Segal is writing the newest film in the Muppet franchise and has described his take on the new film by saying that “we are trying to bring it back to the early ’80s movies where it’s not Muppets in the Sahara or Muppets Underwater. It’s the Muppets getting back together to put on a show, to save the studio.”
News has been quiet about the new film for the past couple of months but we now have a title for the latest Muppet adventure. Disney’s Dick Cook officially announced today that the upcoming Muppet film will be titled “The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made”. You can get the full details and a hint of what the plot might be when you hit the jump.

I know it’s a minor thing but adding a release date and a subtitle to a fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie along with a Summer 2011 release date makes it feel like the film is really happening and it’s not just on Walt Disney’s wish list. Real details like plot, screenwriters, director, casting, etc. are all in the future but Disney doesn’t want this project in development hell. It wants people to know that the fourth movie is called “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and that folks should prepare to set sail in Summer 2011. Hit the jump to find out where the plot may go and if we’ll see the return of the series unforgettable character, Captain Jack Sparrow.

Guillermo del Toro is doing something. Good enough for me. Just thought you’d like to know.
Alright, in a bit more detail about the next great thing he’ll be bringing us (even though we’re not worthy and don’t deserve it), del Toro is teaming up with Disney to create a series of animated films called “Disney Double Dare You” in what I believe is a valuable quest to make sure that the next generation isn’t a bunch of pussies despite their helicopter parents making sure they never experience anything in life that would make them grow as human beings. Less personal ranting and more news about greatness after the jump.
How much money and power does Disney have? Enough that they can hold their own damn convention to show off all their own product. Other studios have to share the stage at some rag-tag event like the San Diego Comic Con while Disney, rolling around in Jonas Brothers and “High School Musical” money, can go to the Anaheim Convention Center, and show off all of their shit. (That’s going to be slogan by the way: “D23 Expo: Check Out Our Shit”)
The D23 Expo (the “23″ commemorates the fourth through twenty-third “Mighty Ducks” movies that never were) will offer looks at ABC’s upcoming shows, behind-the-scenes look at what’s coming to Disney theme parks, a look at Disney’s history and their classic films, but who cares about all that.
What’s going to bring a slew of journalists to Anaheim from September 10th through the 13th is that Disney will be offering first looks at “The Princess and the Frog”, “Rapunzel”, “isney’s A Christmas Carol”, “Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland”, “TRON”, “Toy Story 3″, “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” and “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”. As someone who probably won’t be attending this conference (since I don’t live in California), I’m a little worried as to what this means for what Disney will bring to humble Comic-Con.
