EVERYTHING MUST GO Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 13th, 2011 at 7:13 am

When it comes to comedy, Will Ferrell has fallen into a slump of repetitive characters that have the comic tics of shouting, stating the obvious, and shouting the obvious.  If it weren’t for Ferrell’s sublime comic timing and talent for knowing just how long to go deadpan before breaking out, his movies would seem like sequels where only the character’s name and setting had been changed.  Back in 2006, it was a welcome change of pace to see Ferrell in the dramedy Stranger Than Fiction.  He played a man that could not only hear his life being narrated, but also learned that he was about die.  Ferrell gave a strong performance that required both his comic skills and his dramatic ability.  His new film Everything Must Go once again demands that he set his familiar comedic persona aside in favor of drama, but the movie falls apart because it never demands anything from its lead actor beyond looking sad and tired.

The trailer and poster have gone online for the upcoming indie comedy Everything Must Go starring Will Ferrell.  Ferrell plays a man who has been laid off from his job and decides to sell all of his material possessions in an epic yard sale.  The movie picked up positive notices last year when it played at the Toronto Film Festival and this trailer has me interested because it shows Will Ferrell but he’s not screaming or stating the obvious or stating the obvious while screaming.  He seems to be giving a genuine, low-key performance and it’s a welcome change-of-pace from his regular, broad comic fare.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster.  The film also stars Rebecca Hall, Michael Peña, Laura Dern, Stephen Root, and Christopher Jordan Wallace.  Everything Must Go opens May 13th.

Continuing on the journey of new images from movies playing at upcoming film festivals, after the jump you can check out the first images from first time writer-director Dan Rush’s Everything Must Go, which stars Will Ferrell, Rebecca Hall, Michael Pena, Christopher C.J. Wallace, Glenn Howerton, Stephen Root, and Laura Dern.  In addition, you can see the first images from writer-director Jacob Tierney’s Good Neighbours, which stars Jay Baruchel, Scott Speedman, Emily Hampshire.  Tierney was at TIFF last year with the very well received The Trotsky – which also stared Jay Baruchel.

EVERYTHING MUST GO, Starring Will Ferrell, Heads to the Toronto International Film Festival; THE VANISHING ON 7th STREET and BUNRAKU to also Play

The upcoming dramedy Everything Must Go is headed to this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.  Based on the Raymond Carver short story, Dan Rush’s low-budget dramedy centers on a recovering alcoholic (played by Will Ferrell) “who falls off the wagon, is tossed from both his job and home, and must survive on his front lawn by selling his belongings in a yard sale.”  Ferrell scored another hit this weekend when The Other Guys scored $35.6 million at the box office this weekend.  While I enjoyed the film, I always want to see Ferrell in roles outside his comfort zone and his part in Everything Must Go sounds like one of them.

THR also reports that Brad Anderson’s thriller The Vanishing on 7th Street, starring Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton and John Leguizamo, and Guy Moshe’s action noir movie Bunraku, starring Josh Hartnett, Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson, will play at the festival.  The 2010 Toronto International Film Festival will run from September 9 – 19th.

Rebecca Hall Joins Will Ferrell in EVERYTHING MUST GO

Rebecca Hall image (1).jpgRebecca Hall (Vicki Christina Barcelona) has now joined the cast of the indie drama Everything Must Go. Variety is reporting that she will join Will Ferrell, who signed on to the film last year.  The movie is based on a short story by Raymond Carver and follows a relapsed alcoholic (Ferrell) who begins living on his lawn after he loses his job and wife. Hall will reportedly play a neighbor who is new to the neighborhood and forms a special connection with Ferrell’s character.

The movie is the feature directorial debut of Dan Rush, who has done mostly commercials, and it’s also his first screenplay. It’s being produced by Temple Hill Entertainment who have previously been behind Dear John and the recent Twilight sequels. Hall sounds like a good addition to the cast. Her performance in Vicki Christina Barcelona was incredibly good, but simply didn’t get the buzz that Penélope Cruz‘s did. It’s great to see that she’s settling into some more work.

Will Ferrell to Star in Low-Budget Comedy EVERYTHING MUST GO

There are countless producers out there who would love to have Will Ferrell and his patented brand of screaming comedy star in their film.  But he’s just too popular and most producers can’t pay his regular salary.  That’s a real shame when you consider that Ferrell was able to lead “Land of the Lost” to $50 million at the box office.  Granted, the film cost $100 million to make, but that’s neither here nor there.

But director Dan Rush must have won a contest or something because Will Ferrell is going to star Rush’s $10 million comedy, “Everything Must Go”.  Hit the jump for details.
