Ever since Metallica Through the Never - the 3D movie featuring Metallica in concert – was first announced, I was curious to see just how writer-director Nimrod Antal (Predators) would change up the concert movie genre.  Now, the first trailer for the film is available and it does a nice job of teasing the experience that awaits audiences.  Starring Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) as a band’s crew member whose urgent mission for the band goes terribly wrong, Metallica Through the Never also features band members James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo.  The film opens in IMAX 3D on September 27th and in theaters everywhere starting October 4th.  Hit the jump to watch the trailer and to check out the new poster.

Picturehouse has released the first image from director Nimrod Antal’s (Predators) upcoming concert movie/narrative feature hybrid Metallica Through the Never.  The film stars Dane DeHaan as a band crew member who is sent out on a mission during a live Metallica concert.  DeHaan’s character soon finds that his life has turned completely upside down.  The footage of DeHaan’s character is interspersed with actual concert footage, and during Steve’s recent interview with the actor he described the pic as “a concert movie meets The Wall meets Metallica.”

Hit the jump to check out the first image from the film, which shows DeHaan’s character in a rather chaotic situation.  Metallica Through the Never opens exclusively in IMAX theaters on September 27th and expands into additional theaters on October 4th.

With production currently underway in New York on director Marc Webb’s sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2, we’ve seen our fair share of grainy set photos.  We hadn’t really gotten a look at anything super revealing, but then last week images surfaced of a very different looking Jamie Foxx as the pic’s villain Electro.  The actor was covered head to toe in blue body paint and was sporting some luminous markings on his skin, making for a rather unique take on the comics character.  Now that those images are out there, Webb has decided to share some official images of the actor in character as well as our first look at Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn.

Hit the jump for more, including the images.  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in 3D on May 2, 2014.

THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES Review

[This is a re-post of my review from the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.  The Place Beyond the Pines opens tomorrow in wide release.]

Writer-director Derek Cianfrance‘s The Place Beyond the Pines is a rich, multi-layered narrative dripping with fatalism, guilt, honor, and no easy answers. It is an epic family saga that defies easy explanation, and rebels against the structure of a traditional narrative. His gripping tale shows split-second connections that last lifetimes, and old sins that reach across generations. Cianfrance has created a remarkable work that reaches a grand ambition with an intimate tale. And I have to tell you why it works without divulging the twists and turns of its razor-sharp script.

Now playing in limited release and expanding nationwide this weekend is one of the best films you’re going to see this year: director Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond the Pines.  The pic centers on a professional motorcycle rider turned bank robber (Ryan Gosling) and a rookie police officer (Bradley Cooper).  Saying more would be detrimental to your enjoyment of the film, and I would encourage you to be very careful when reading about it.  Pines also stars Eva Mendes, Bruce Greenwood, Dane DeHaan, Ray Liotta, Ben Mendelsohn, and Rose Byrne.   For more on the film, here are images, clips, and everything we’ve previously posted on the film.

At the New York City press day, I got to speak with Dehaan.  We talked about how he prepared to make sure his character looked real and authentic on screen, what the last year has been like for him having landed such high profile roles, the 3D Metallica movie (Metallica Through the Never), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and his reaction to Chris Cooper playing his father, and a lot more.

One of the more talented young actors working today that we’re going to be seeing more and more of in the coming years is Dane DeHaan.  The actor first gained notice for his impressive performance on the HBO series In Treatment in 2010, and shined last year in the found footage pic Chronicle.  DeHaan recently landed the coveted role of Harry Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and is absolutely fantastic opposite Daniel Radcliffe in the Sundance hit Kill Your Darlings, which opens later this year, but he recently filmed a rather curious film that involves the band Metallica called Metallica Through the Never.

Steve recently spoke with DeHaan in anticipation of the upcoming crime drama The Place Beyond the Pines, and while we’ll have the full interview available closer to that film’s release, we wanted to share what he had to say about his work in Metallic Through the Never right away.  Written and directed by Nimrod Antal (Predators), the film apparently blurs the lines between concert documentary and narrative feature, and DeHaan talked about the pic’s plot and described it as a cross between a concert film and Pink Floyd’s The Wall.  Hit the jump to read on.

Dane Dehaan Talks THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2; Says the Script is ‘Epic’ and ‘People Are Going to Love it’

With director Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 currently filming on the streets of New York City, over the past week we’ve posted a ton of set photos.  However, if you’ve been wondering why most of the set photos only feature Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, it’s because a lot of the cast hasn’t started filming.  But according to Dane Dehaan, who I spoke to earlier today for Derek Cianfrance’s fantastic movie The Place Beyond the Pines, that’s about to change because he starts filming “super soon.”  As most of you know, in the Spider-Man sequel, Dehaan plays Harry Osborn and Chris Cooper will be playing his father, Norman Osborn.  As a big fan of both actors, I think they’re going to nail the roles.  In addition to revealing his first day on set is coming up, I was also able to ask Dehaan what he thought about the script.  He told me:

“It’s awesome.  It really is.  It’s human and it’s deep and it’s also epic and still a huge superhero movie.  But it all makes sense and it all comes from very human elements and I think people are really going to love it.”

Earlier today, we reported that Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 began production in New York.  Now, we have the full press release that reveals the first official synopsis and the principal cast.  We knew that Paul Giamatti was in talks to join the production and can confirm that now, but his role has yet to be specified.  Another new name that joins the sequel’s cast is Colm Feore (Thor), but his role is also unspecified (Norman Osborn?).  Hit the jump to check out the synopsis and read the press release.

11 New Images from THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES Starring Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, and Eva Mendes [Updated with Hi-Res]

Eleven new images from Derek Cianfrance‘s The Place Beyond the Pines have been released.  The film centers on a generational conflict involving two fathers: one a pro-motorcycle rider and bank robber (Ryan Gosling) and a rookie cop on the rise (Bradley Cooper).  Saying more would be detrimental to your enjoyment of the film, and I would encourage you to be very careful when reading about it.  I saw the movie at TIFF, and it has a good chance of being on my Top 10 films of 2013.  I’m a little surprised the film is getting released in March since it could have some serious awards potential.

Hit the jump to check out the images (don’t worry; they’re not spoilery).  The film also stars Eva Mendes, Ray Liotta, and Dane DeHaanThe Place Beyond the Pines opens in limited release on March 29th.

Sundance 2013: KILL YOUR DARLINGS Review

by     Posted: January 19th, 2013 at 10:57 pm

If poetry doesn’t broaden our view of our world and force us to push the boundaries of our lives, then it’s pointless.  Poetry cannot always tap into the chaos and beauty of life if it must be constrained by meter, verse, and rules set down centuries ago.  Poetry, when wielded by genius, can seduce, defend, condemn, and most importantly, transform.  Words are powerful enough to change the world, but even in the hands of the most gifted writers, they can be futile against our frailties, insecurities, and desires.  In his magnificent debut feature, director and co-writer John Krokidas has created a moving, exhilarating, and heartbreaking film in Kill Your Darlings.  Led by breathtaking performances by stars Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, and Ben Foster, Kill Your Darlings watches the greatest writers of a generation push the boundaries of modern American culture only to find that even the best words, the most well-spoken words, the most honest words, can fail when spoken to a shattered heart.

Dane DeHaan Leads METALLICA THROUGH THE NEVER; Film Hits Theaters August 9, 2013

Picturehouse announced today that it is reopening its doors, and the first film out of the gate is a peculiar yet exciting one.  Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) and members of Mettalica star in Metallica Through the Never, which centers on a young band crew member who “is sent out on an urgent mission while the band is playing a rousing live set in front of a sold-out crowd and unexpectedly finds his world turned completely upside down.”  Written and directed by Nimrod Antal (Predators), the pic apparently has already been shot and is slated for release on August 9th of this year.

It sounds like a pretty cool showcase of DeHaan’s talents, and I’m interested to see what kind of film Antal has put together.  DeHaan recently landed the coveted role of Harry Osborn in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man sequel and will be seen in the indie Kill Your Darlings, which premieres at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival.  Hit the jump to read the full press release concerning Metallica Through the Never.

Best Performances, Directing, and Other Miscellany of 2012

by     Posted: December 25th, 2012 at 9:10 am

best-of-2012

In past years for my “Best of” list, I’ve been able to provide fun categories like “Best Kill” and “Best Quotes”, but sadly, that won’t be happening this year.  I keep notes throughout the year, but in July, my hard drive crashed, and because I am a foolish person, I didn’t back up the notes to a separate drive.  However, I do have enough information to do the traditional categories as well as Breakthrough Performance, “A Very Good Year”, Best Villain, Best Surprises, Biggest Disappointments, and a new category, “Best Movie You Probably Missed This Year.”  One final note: unlike previous years, the film had to come out in 2012; festival-only flicks don’t count, so that’s why there’s no love for The Place Beyond the Pines on this year’s list.

Hit the jump to check out my miscellaneous “Best of 2012″ picks.  Be sure to keep checking back this week as we’ll be running Top 10 lists from Adam, Dave, and me.

First Official Image and Full Synopsis for KILL YOUR DARLINGS Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, and Jack Huston

by     Posted: December 17th, 2012 at 10:38 am

The first official image from writer/director John Krokidas’ upcoming drama Kill Your Darlings has been released online.  The film focuses on the origins of the Beat movement and follows the friendships of Allen Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe), Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston), and William S. Burroughs (Ben Foster) as they’re tested by the murder of David Kammerer, a man in his thirties who is desperately in love with Ginsberg’s friend Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan).  I’m fascinated to see how this story plays out on screen, and I look forward to catching the film when it premieres at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival.

Hit the jump to check out the image and full synopsis.  The film also stars Michael C. Hall and Elizabeth Olsen.  The 2013 Sundance Film Festival runs January 17 – 27.

Marc Webb Announces Dane DeHaan Will Play Harry Osborn in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

Director Marc Webb has found his Harry Osborn.  We learned back in October that Webb and producers were working to cast the integral role of Peter Parker’s best friend, Harry Osborn, in the Amazing Spider-Man sequel, and a couple of casting shortlists followed shortly thereafter.  It was first reported that Dane DeHaan, Alden Ehrenreich, and Brady Corbet were in the running for the role, then a subsequent report claimed that producers had a change of heart and were looking to cast a more athletic-looking actor in the role.  Whether that second report was hogwash or not, Webb announced today on Twitter that none other than Dane DeHaan has come away with the role.  Hit the jump for more.

New Batch of Actors Testing for Harry Osborn in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Including Sam Claflin and Eddie Redmayne

Casting is currently underway on Sony’s fast-moving sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and it appears that producers are changing course in filling the integral role of Harry Osborn.  Marc Webb is returning to direct with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone back as the film’s leads, but the follow-up is poised to include a tantalizing group of newcomers that should ring familiar to fans of the comics.  Shailene Woodley is set to play eventual love interest Mary Jane in what may amount to a larger role in the third film, and negotiations are underway to nail down Jamie Foxx as the film’s villain Electro.

We recently heard that Dane DeHaan (Chronicle), Alden Ehrenreich (Beautiful Creatures) and Brady Corbet (Melancholia) were under consideration for the role of Harry Obsorn, but now it appears that Sony is looking for a different type of actor to take on the part.  Hit the jump for more.
