John-Hawkes-The-Surrogate-Lincoln-interview-slice

Led by a truly remarkable performance by John Hawkes, writer-director Ben Lewin‘s The Surrogate blew me away at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.  The film’s based on the true story of Mark O’Brien, a 36-year-old poet and journalist with an iron lung, who decides that he no longer wants to be a virgin.  With the help of his priest (William H. Macy) and a professional sex surrogate (Helen Hunt), we follow his amazing journey.  Trust me, The Surrogates is great on so many levels (which explains why there was a bidding war; Fox Searchlight won), and it’s definitely going to be a contender at the 2013 Academy Awards.  For more on the film, here’s Matt’s review.

Shortly after seeing the film, I sat down with John Hawkes for an extended interview.  We talked about being at Sundance, how he prepared for The Surrogate, the responsibility of playing a real person, his preference between a few takes or a lot, and so much more.  In addition, since Hawkes just worked with Steven Spielberg on Lincoln, he talked about how Tony Kushner‘s screenplay drew him to the project and what it was like to work with Daniel Day-Lewis.  Hit the jump to watch.

Hit the jump to check out the set photo.  The film also stars Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones, James Spader, John Hawkes, Michael Stuhlbarg, David Strathairn, Walton Goggins, David Oyelowo, Tim Blake Nelson, Bruce McGill, Jackie Earle Haley, Lee Pace, and Jared Harris. Lincoln opens in late 2012.

Kathleen Kennedy Talks Daniel Day-Lewis in LINCOLN; Says ROBOPOCALYPSE Starts Filming End of Summer/Beginning of Fall Next Year

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 8th, 2011 at 12:02 pm

Just a few days ago we brought you a portion of Steve’s conversation with producer Kathleen Kennedy, whom he spoke to as part of the junket for Steven Spielberg‘s World War I drama War Horse. One of Spielberg’s most prolific producing partners, Kennedy provided updates on Jurassic Park 4 and a Tintin sequel, and even talked about a 3D re-release of the original Jurassic Park.  Today we’ve got more of Steve’s interview with Kennedy and she talks about Spielberg’s next two projects: Lincoln and Robopocalypse. The producer talked about working with the phenomenal Daniel Day-Lewis on the now-filming Lincoln and revealed exactly when/where/if Day-Lewis breaks character.

In addition, Kennedy talked briefly about Spielberg’s next project after Lincoln, Robopocalypse. Based the novel by Daniel H. Wilson, the film tells the story of a sentient artificial intelligence that takes over our global technology and begins a systemic attack on mankind. Hit the jump to see what Kennedy had to say about both projects.

Martin Scorsese Says He’s Prepping SILENCE As His Next Project

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 5th, 2011 at 2:25 pm

Director Martin Scorsese is currently doing the rounds for his latest effort, the splendidly fantastic Hugo, but many are wondering which project he’ll tackle next. While he had previously stated that he planned on getting to his adaptation of Shusaku Endo’s novel Silence after Hugo, he recently attached himself to an adaptation of The Snowman and a remake of The Gambler, throwing some doubt on whether or not he would actually get to the 17th Century Japan-set pic. Well now the director has confirmed that Silence will indeed be his next film, and said that they’re currently working to pull everything together. Hit the jump for more, including whether or not Daniel Day-Lewis is still set to star.

TOP 5: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, MEN IN BLACK 3, LINCOLN, Cinemath, 2012 Oscar Previews

I’m writing to you this week a better person. “Why?” you ask? Well, I’d like to think it’s a result of my ongoing pursuit to better myself. Really, though, It’s because I watched The Muppets movie last weekend. I can’t remember leaving the movie theater that genuinely happy with the state of the film industry and the world as a whole. Any place that understands the societal importance of and allows for the continued expression of Jim Henson’s iconic creations is a place I’m happy to be a part of. In short, anytime The Muppets are around, I’m all the better for it.

In other news, in this week’s “Top 5″ installment you’ll find some of the first looks at Rhys Ifans’ The Lizard from The Amazing Spider-Man, the first teaser posters for Men in Black 3, the first image of Daniel Day Lewis in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, Brendan’s latest Cinemath feature, and each of our 2012 Oscar Previews. First Look at Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln for Steven Spielberg’s LINCOLN

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 30th, 2011 at 1:59 pm

Director Steven Spielberg has two movies coming out next month, but he’s currently busy prepping his next effort, Lincoln. The high-profile pic has been in the works for years, and Spielberg is finally set to start production early next year. Set in the lead as our nation’s 16th President is Daniel Day-Lewis. You may be aware that Day-Lewis is known for going pretty hardcore method for his roles, and now we have our first look at the actor all trimmed up as Lincoln. He’s not in costume, but Variety’s Jeff Sneider hears that Day-Lewis hasn’t broken his Lincoln accent since March and his real name doesn’t even appear on the call sheet, so it’s pretty safe to assume that he’s already “in character.”

Even without a costume he looks terrific, and I really can’t wait to see what’s sure to be an extraordinary performance in full. Hit the jump to check out the image. The film also stars Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones, James Spader, John Hawkes, and Jared Harris as Ulysses S. Grant. Lincoln opens in late 2012.

LINCOLN to Be Shot Again in Virginia This Fall

Steven Spielberg’s Abraham Lincoln biopic, Lincoln, has been languishing on the director’s “To Do” list for years.  The project finally picked up steam last November when it was announced that Daniel Day-Lewis would play Lincoln and that shooting would begin this fall.  A few weeks ago we learned that Sally Field would be playing Mary Todd Lincoln, and today we’ve learned that Spielberg plans to shoot the film in Virginia.  The AP reports that the film, which is based off Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Team of Rivals, will shoot in Richmond and Petersburg.  I expect that over the summer we’ll hear casting for the other major roles: Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of Treasury Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of State William H. Seward, and attorney general Edward Bates.

Hit the jump for a synopsis of Goodwin’s excellent book.  Lincoln is set for a 4th-quarter 2012 release date.

Martin Scorsese’s Next Film to be Jesuit Priest Drama SILENCE Possibly Starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Benicio Del Toro

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 16th, 2011 at 6:08 pm

Well, that was fast. We recently reported that director Martin Scorsese is attached to direct the stockbroker drama The Wolf of Wall Street with Leonardo DiCaprio set to star, with filming possibly starting as soon as June. It appears the presumption that Wall Street would be Scorsese’s next film was a bit premature. Now it looks like the director’s next project after he wraps his family film Hugo Cabret is the long-gestating drama Silence, about two 17th century Jesuit priests facing persecution in Japan.

Daniel Day-Lewis, Benicio Del Toro and Gael Garcia Bernal have all previously been set to star in the film, but The Playlist reports that their status with the project ambiguous at the moment. They did, however, confirm that this will be Scorsese’s next film. This is one of those projects that Scorsese has been flirting with for a while, and I’m fairly certain the entire film community would love to see it finally get made, especially with that cast. Hit the jump for more, including a synopsis of the novel.

Daniel Day-Lewis to Star in Steven Spielberg’s LINCOLN; Filming Set to Begin in Fall 2011 for 4th-Quarter 2012 Release

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 19th, 2010 at 11:20 am

Earlier this year, Liam Neeson dropped out of the title role in Steven Spielberg’s long-in-development Abraham Lincoln biopic, Lincoln.  DreamWorks has now issued a press release saying that Daniel Day-Lewis will play the role of our 16th President.  According to the press release, the film is still based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s excellent book Team of Rivals with a script by award-winning writer Tony Kushner.

The press release also notes that “Filming is expected to begin in the fall of 2011 for release in the fourth quarter of 2012 through Disney’s Touchstone distribution label.”  That’s curious since, as we reported earlier, Spielberg was planning to direct an adaptation of Robopocalypse in January 2012.  Presumably, that project has now been pushed back.  Hit the jump to check out the press release.

Paul Dano Exclusive Interview THE EXTRA MAN; Plus THERE WILL BE BLOOD Talk and Working With Paul Thomas Anderson

by Ron Messer    Posted: August 11th, 2010 at 7:06 pm

Paul Dano’s career has been defined by strong performances opposite award-winning actors.  The stunning list of his high-profile onscreen pairings range from his breakthrough, Indie Spirit Award-winning turn for Best Debut Performance in 2001’s L.I.E. as the target of a pedophile, played by fellow nominee Brian Cox, to his portrayal of a nihilistic teen as part of Little Miss Sunshine’s 2007 SAG Award winning ensemble where he shared a backseat in the Hoover’s family van with Alan Arkin in the 76-year-old’s Oscar-winning performance, to his performance of a preacher and his twin (Paul and Eli Sunday) opposite eventual Oscar-winner Daniel Day-Lewis’ unhinged oil man Daniel Plainview in Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood.

Collider caught up with the 26-year-old to discuss his latest big screen partnership in The Extra Man, which opened in Los Angeles this past weekend to continue its national rollout, opposite Kevin Kline.  Hit the jump for the interview’s transcript and audio, along with stories of his early work with several Oscar winners, Daniel Day-Lewis’ intensity, whether he’ll work on Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, his take on the Broadway musical adaptation of Little Miss Sunshine and the danger of dressing in drag, on screen.

Rumor: Guy Ritchie Wants Daniel Day-Lewis to Play Moriarty in SHERLOCK HOLMES 2; Sean Penn, Javier Bardem and Gary Oldman also Under Consideration

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 23rd, 2010 at 2:18 pm

Well this would be cool if it turns out to be true.  SuperHeroHype says they’ve been told by unconfirmed sources that director Guy Ritchie wants Daniel Day Lewis to play Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes 2.  SHH also reports that Sean Penn, Javier Bardem, and Gary Oldman are rumored to be under consideration for the role.  For those who don’t know, Professor Moriarty is Holmes’ arch-nemesis, and was set up as the sequel’s antagonist at the end of the first film.

Brad Pitt’s name has been mentioned in connection to the part on multiple occasions.  However, if these rumors turn out to be true, then perhaps Ritchie and Warner Bros. have given up the ghost on getting the popular actor.  I think Day-Lewis would be an even better decision.  I also think Oldman would be a solid choice and Bardem’s a fascinating pick.  But Penn?  I just can’t picture him in the role.  Sherlock Holmes 2 is slated to hit theaters on December 16, 2011.  Filming begins this fall.

Daniel Day-Lewis May Head OUT THE WINDOW to Play Charles Dickens

It was recently announced that writer/director Armando Iannucci would follow up the uproarious Brit-comedy In the Loop with Out The Window, a recount of the secret love affair between renowned author Charles Dickens and actress Nelly Ternan.  It seems that it is merely the best of times, as the Victorian project is attracting some serious talent: The Observer reports Oscar-winner Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood) is now the frontrunner to portray Dickens in the biopic, with Ben Whishaw (Bright Star) also in the running.

Iannucci will also take on scripting duties with co-writers Roger Drew and Will Smith, who wrote for the BBC series The Thick of It on which In the Loop was based. Slated for release sometime in 2011,  Out the Window is based on Claire Tomalin’s biography, The Invisible Woman.

NINE Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 24th, 2009 at 7:18 pm

slice_nine_01.jpg

Maybe I’m just old-fashioned but I believe that a musical needs, above all else, good music.  Direction, performances, production design, and choreography (if applicable) are all important, but a musical lives and dies with its songs.  Nine dies and it’s a long, excruciating death as we follow mopish director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) suffering from writer’s block and depending on all the women in his life while providing nothing in return.  Eventually, “Nine” no longer represents Frederico Fellini’s “8 ½ plus music”, but a countdown to how many forgettable numbers you’ll have to endure before the movie ends.

3rd Trailer for NINE Attempts to Explain the Plot and Characters

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 30th, 2009 at 4:16 pm

slice_nine_penelope_cruz_01.jpg

With only 19 days left until it hits theaters, Nine has a new trailer which finally goes beyond sex, cinematography, and accolades (which won me over), and attempts to present as many characters as possible as well as the conflicts of the main character, Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis).  It gets to just about everyone in the cast except Fergie and Sophia Loren, so let me help out with that right now: Loren plays Guido’s mother and Fergie plays the whore from his youth.  I’m not sure why they didn’t try to explain those roles, but it does accomplish a lot within the span of two and a half minutes so head over to Apple and check it out.

Nine hits theaters on December 18th.  Hit the jump for a brief synopsis.

Movie Posters for Rob Marshall’s NINE Starring Daniel Day Lewis, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, and Penelope Cruz

slice_nine_movie_poster_01.jpg

The new poster for Rob Marshall’s Nine has just come online and the tagline informs us that this holiday season we should be Italian.  I’ll be anything this movie wants me to be as long as I can get a full 27×40 poster of Penelope Cruz doing the same pose she’s doing in this poster.  While co-stars Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, and Marion Cotillard are also on this poster, it’s not hard to see why star Daniel Day-Lewis is looking straight in Cruz’ direction.

Hit the jump to see the poster and a brief synopsis.  Nine opens in limited release on December 18th and goes wide Christmas Day. [UPDATE: Yahoo! has also debuted a poster which is quite good; you can see it after the jump as well]
