For Daniel Radcliffe’s first major role since Harry Potter, he chose to star in The Woman in Black, a gothic horror tale based off of a 1983 novel by Susan Hill. Horror movies have been lucrative as of late (Insidious, Paranormal Activity 3, The Devil Inside) and legendary studio Hammer Film Productions is delving back into the sort of film that made them popular in the UK. On this side of the pond, however, Radcliffe’s name is sure to stir up more interest than the revival of an old horror studio. With that in mind, domestic distributor CBS Films has released a collection of behind-the-scenes featurettes and clips for The Woman in Black in an effort to showcase Radcliffe’s maturity as an actor. Directed by James Watkins (Eden Lake), The Woman in Black stars Radcliffe, Janet McTeer (Tideland) and Ciaran Hinds (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and opens February 3rd. In what is shaping up to be an interesting cast full of young up-and-comers, Kill Your Darlings has now claimed Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) among its ranks. Alongside Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Dane DeHaan (In Treatment) and Jack Huston (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), Olsen is set to play Edie Parker, the well-to-do, art-student girlfriend of Jack Kerouac (Huston). The thriller centers around a murder at Columbia University in 1944 that served as a formative experience for the young writers who would catalyze the Beat Revolution. Radcliffe will play Allen Ginsberg who befriends classmate Lucien Carr (DeHaan), whose murder of David Kammerer will be central to the story. When we first reported on this project, Chris Evans (Captain America), Jessie Eisenberg (The Social Network) and Ben Whishaw (Perfume: The Story of a Murderer) were cast as Kerouac, Ginsberg and Carr, respectively. I think this current lineup has a much better feel to it (although I’m unfamiliar with Whishaw). Hit the jump for more on Kill Your Darlings.

This past weekend brought the last episode of Saturday Night Live for the year 2011, but the late night sketch comedy series will return with a bang in the first two weeks of 2012. Kicking off the New Year, and maybe the end of the world, will be NBA All-Star Charles Barkley returning to host for his third time on January 7th along with musical guest Kelly Clarkson. Barkley is usually all over the TV as an analyst for professional and college basketball on TNT and CBS, but when he comes to studio 8H, all bets are off. If you’ve never caught Barkley making an appearance on SNL, we’ve included a couple of sketches from his appearance back in 2010 after the jump.

CBS Films has released a new image and TV spot for the gothic horror film The Woman in Black. The movie centers on a young attorney (Daniel Radcliffe) who goes to settle an estate of a recently deceased eccentric, but discovers that the house belonging to his client may be haunted. In the real estate game, they call say those homes have “Personality”.
I’m a little sick of CBS Films spoiling every scare in the movie in order to promote their scary movie, but I guess it’s already a tough sell when you’re asking the audience to check out a non-mainstream horror sub-genre and to buy Radcliffe in his first major non-Harry Potter role. I still think the movie looks good; I just don’t want to see any more of it in the ads. If spoilers don’t bother you, hit the jump to check out the TV spot along with the new image. The film also stars Ciarán Hinds and recent Golden Globes nominee Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs). The Woman in Black opens February 3, 2012.

Daniel Radcliffe is in talks to play Beat poet Allen Ginsberg in the thriller” Kill Your Darlings. Radcliffe told the French press [via Twitch] that he would “very likely” be playing the literary figure for a film, which would be released in 2012. Twitch did a little more digging and found that after Radcliffe finishes his Broadway run on How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying, he’ll move on to play Ginsberg in Darlings. Written and directed by John Krokidas, the movie revolves around the relationship between Ginsberg, influential authors Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs, and the man who brought them together, Lucien Carr. What makes the movie into a thriller is that Carr served time in 1944 for the murder of his lover, David Kammerer.
The project was first announced back in 2009 with Chris Evans, Jesse Eisenberg, and Ben Whishaw attached to play Kerouac, Ginsberg and Carr, respectively. Obviously, Eisenberg is out, and it’s unknown if Evans and Whishaw are still on board. Radcliffe will next be seen in the gothic thriller The Woman in Black.

CBS Films has released another trailer for the gothic horror film The Woman in Black. The movie stars Daniel Radcliffe as a young attorney who travels to a remote village in order to settle the affairs of an old estate. When he arrives, he discovers that the locals are terrified of a vengeful ghost of a scorned woman who supposedly haunts the estate. Creepy visuals and spooky moments ensue.
I stopped watching this new trailer halfway through because the studio has now released four trailers for the movie and I’m afraid all of the scares and memorable imagery will be spoiled. I know trying to sell a gothic horror film isn’t easy and Radcliffe is trying to build his appeal beyond Harry Potter, but that doesn’t mean we need to see every little scare the movie has to offer. If you’re not concerned about spoilers, hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Ciaran Hinds, Janet McTeer, Liz White, and Alisa Khazanova. The Woman in Black opens February 3, 2012.

Warner Brothers did what they could to drag it out, but after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, the Harry Potter franchise is finally closed. Perhaps not for good – author J.K. Rowling has got her new Potter-centric website, and she may get bored and write another adventure in that universe. But no matter if it comes back or not, for performers Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint Potter will be part of their legacy. They spent ten years playing Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. And no matter what they do, they are as stuck to this as Sean Connery is to James Bond. Continued after the jump.

The trailers keep coming this morning and we’ve got a new one for the gothic horror flick The Woman in Black. For those unfamiliar with the movie, the story centers on a young lawyer (Daniel Radcliffe) who travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorner woman is terrorizing the locals. The new trailer contains most of the footage we saw in the recent UK trailer, but I still like the look of the film and I’m glad I only have to wait a few more months to see it. My only concern is that the trailers may start to spoil some of the scares.

The UK trailer for the gothic ghost story The Woman in Black has gone online. Daniel Radcliffe stars as a young lawyer who travels to a remote village where he discovers the locals are being terrorized by a vengeful ghost of a scorned woman. Previous trailers have focused on conveying the tone of the movie, but this is the first one to get in depth with the plot and the characters. It’s also the first one that allows Radcliffe to speak a few lines of dialogue. However, it’s the aesthetic of the film that seems to override everything and since the movie looks gorgeous, I have absolutely no problem with that.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Ciaran Hinds, Janet McTeer, Liz White, and Alisa Khazanova. The Woman in Black opens in the US on February 3, 2012 and in the UK on February 10, 2012.

The first trailer for The Woman in Black has gone online. The movie stars Daniel Radcliffe as a young lawyer who travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals. As we’ve seen from the images released for the movie and now this new trailer, it looks like director James Watkins has done an excellent job saturating the film with a great gothic horror vibe. The trailer also does a solid job of playing up the haunted house element of the plot. My only complaint is that I wish we could hear Radcliffe say a couple lines so we could get a better sense of his performance.

New images have gone online from the Hammer Films gothic-thriller The Woman in Black starring Daniel Radcliffe, and the insipid-looking romantic comedy What’s Your Number? starring Anna Faris and Chris Evans. In The Woman in Black, Radcliffe plays a young lawyer who travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals. And they don’t teach you how to deal with that in law school. As for What’s Your Number?, Faris plays a woman who thinks that because she’s slept with 20 different guys, she already passed by Mr. Right and so she has to revisit all of her exes with the help of her handsome neighbor (Evans). The movie’s message is apparently “Women, if you sleep with a bunch of guys, then you have probably missed out on a committed relationship, you giant slut.” If the movie was about a guy who had slept with 20 different women, there would be no movie because watching a dude get high-fives for 90 minutes has no narrative momentum.

Splitting J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was a risky proposition from a narrative standpoint. Financially, it was an unsurprising move, but if you have one movie that’s all slow, methodical character development and the second movie that’s all fast-paced action, then each movie could be monotonous because they’ve lost the other half of their story. Both parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows managed to avoid that problem. The first part, while mostly centered on wandering and quiet moments, still managed to work in humor and thrilling set pieces. By contrast, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 is an almost non-stop epic battle that still finds time for the character development and deeply moving moments the series became known for. It is the grandest of all of the Harry Potter films in scope, in action, and in heartbreak.

I’m too excited for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 to complain that Warner Bros. has produced four more posters for the film. Also, the posters look good. I’m also amused that of all the posters they’ve made for the films, they haven’t even bothered slapping on the title. Half of them simply read “It All Ends” and if you don’t know what’s ending, then you probably don’t care about Harry Potter in the first place.
Hit the jump to check out the new posters. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 opens in 3D on July 15th.

We’ve got 9 clips from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 for you today. As a massive fan of the book series, I cannot wait to see what director David Yates and Co. have in store for us for the final go around. This really is one of the most successful franchises in history—both commercially and critically—and it’s incredibly sad to see it come to an end.
Hit the jump to watch the clips. And if you missed it, check out Steve’s set visit coverage here. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. It all ends July 15th in 2D and 3D.

I’m standing in the Great Hall at Hogwarts. I see Snape positioned where Dumbledore used to stand at the top of the steps. As the new Headmaster, Snape is addressing a room full of students. He’s telling them that anyone who knows the whereabouts of Harry Potter – whether it be student or faculty – needs to come forward with any information or the punishment will be severe. Snape continues with the news that the school has the best magic protection and Harry Potter will not be able to enter the grounds. The former potions teacher walks among the students, looking at them, his gaze intense and his dialogue slow and methodical. He’s clearly hoping someone will tell him something. As he finishes saying his last line he looks up because he hears the voice of Harry Potter saying, “I don’t think the protection was good enough.” All the students turn, looking shocked. Harry Potter has returned to Hogwarts.
The next day, I’m on a plane, flying back from London. Yesterday was March 23, 2010 and I was standing in a place I’ve only seen in the movies, as I was one of the lucky online journalists invited to Leavesden Studios outside London to visit the set of the last Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. As a huge fan of the books and the movies, getting to stand in the Great Hall and Dumbledore’s office was a huge thrill and something I will remember forever. But while getting to see those sets was amazing, we did so much more. Hit the jump for my report and video blog.
