One of this year’s box office surprises was the thriller The Woman in Black. Starring Daniel Radcliffe in his first major role following Harry Potter, the Gothic horror tale was based off of a 1983 novel by Susan Hill and made over $125 million at the worldwide box office. In fact, the film was such a success that Hammer, Alliance Films, Cross Creek Pictures and author Hill are teaming up for a follow-up entitled The Woman in Black: Angels of Death. The film will be set 40 years after the events of the first film, and will follow a new couple’s experience in the same eerie house. For more on The Woman in Black, here’s all our previous coverage which includes trailers, images, featurettes and clips.
With the film hitting Blu-ray and DVD this week, I recently did an exclusive phone interview with Radcliffe. We talked about the success of the film and if he was relieved that he could open a film that didn’t have the words “Harry Potter” in the title, what he thought worked really well in the film and if there was something he wished he could redo, how many takes he likes to do, and more. In addition, we talked about his thoughts on Warner Bros. eventually re-releasing the entire Harry Potter series in 3D, the drama Kill Your Darlings (in which he plays poet Allen Ginsberg), his criteria for picking future roles, and whether there’s a comic book role he’d like to play (The Flash). It seems like director Guillermo del Toro adds another project to his “to-do” list every month, but welcome news came last week when it was announced that del Toro is planning to co-direct his first stop-motion animated feature. The filmmaker is spearheading an adaptation of Pinocchio alongside co-director Mark Gustafson, based off of author Gris Grimly’s dark interpretation of the story that takes place in Italy between World War I and World War II. Though the year-long filming process on the 3D feature doesn’t begin until next summer, del Toro recently revealed a few names that may or may not end up as part of the voice cast. A very exciting team-up of actors may be in the works. Though the watercooler British series Downton Abbey has moved from the Miniseries category to the Drama Series category for this year’s Emmys, none other than Harry Potter and Don Draper may be starring in a period British miniseries of their own. A report originated in The Sun that Daniel Radcliffe is circling a role in the four-part post-WWI miniseries that would see him playing the younger version of a character played by Jon Hamm. We’ve got a batch of set photos to share with you this morning. Briefly:

Harry Potter’s a Beatnik. Daniel Radcliffe is currently shooting the thriller Kill Your Darlings in which he plays poet Allen Ginsberg, and the first set photos have surfaced online giving us a look at Radcliffe in his Ginsberg garb. The project sounds pretty interesting, as it follows the friendships of Allen Ginsberg (Radcliffe), Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston) and William S. Burroughs (Ben Foster) and how their relationships are tested by the murder of Burroughs’ friend, David Kammerer. I think Radcliffe looks pretty spiffy here, and we also get a look at Chronicle star Dane DeHaan getting in some quality street cuddle time with Radcliffe.

The John Krokidas project Kill Your Darlings continues to add quality cast members. The thriller, based on the lives of writers who sparked the Beat Revolution, already stars Daniel Radcliffe, Ben Foster, Elizabeth Olsen, Dane DeHaan and Jack Huston. Now, Kill Your Darlings has added Michael C. Hall, Kyra Sedgwick and Jennifer Jason Leigh. The film follows the friendships of Allen Ginsberg (Radcliffe), Jack Kerouac (Huston) and William S. Burroughs (Foster) and how their relationships are tested by the murder of Burroughs’ friend, David Kammerer. Hall is reportedly playing Kammerer. Production is scheduled to start March 19th at Columbia University in New York. Hit the jump for more.

For Daniel Radcliffe’s first major role since Harry Potter, he chose to star in The Woman in Black, a gothic horror tale based off of a 1983 novel by Susan Hill. Horror movies have been lucrative as of late (Insidious, Paranormal Activity 3, The Devil Inside) and legendary studio Hammer Film Productions is delving back into the sort of film that made them popular in the UK. On this side of the pond, however, Radcliffe’s name is sure to stir up more interest than the revival of an old horror studio. With that in mind, domestic distributor CBS Films has released a collection of behind-the-scenes featurettes and clips for The Woman in Black in an effort to showcase Radcliffe’s maturity as an actor. Directed by James Watkins (Eden Lake), The Woman in Black stars Radcliffe, Janet McTeer (Tideland) and Ciaran Hinds (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and opens February 3rd. Hit the jump to check out the featurettes, clips and a new poster.

In what is shaping up to be an interesting cast full of young up-and-comers, Kill Your Darlings has now claimed Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) among its ranks. Alongside Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Dane DeHaan (In Treatment) and Jack Huston (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), Olsen is set to play Edie Parker, the well-to-do, art-student girlfriend of Jack Kerouac (Huston). The thriller centers around a murder at Columbia University in 1944 that served as a formative experience for the young writers who would catalyze the Beat Revolution. Radcliffe will play Allen Ginsberg who befriends classmate Lucien Carr (DeHaan), whose murder of David Kammerer will be central to the story. When we first reported on this project, Chris Evans (Captain America), Jessie Eisenberg (The Social Network) and Ben Whishaw (Perfume: The Story of a Murderer) were cast as Kerouac, Ginsberg and Carr, respectively. I think this current lineup has a much better feel to it (although I’m unfamiliar with Whishaw). Hit the jump for more on Kill Your Darlings.

This past weekend brought the last episode of Saturday Night Live for the year 2011, but the late night sketch comedy series will return with a bang in the first two weeks of 2012. Kicking off the New Year, and maybe the end of the world, will be NBA All-Star Charles Barkley returning to host for his third time on January 7th along with musical guest Kelly Clarkson. Barkley is usually all over the TV as an analyst for professional and college basketball on TNT and CBS, but when he comes to studio 8H, all bets are off. If you’ve never caught Barkley making an appearance on SNL, we’ve included a couple of sketches from his appearance back in 2010 after the jump.

CBS Films has released a new image and TV spot for the gothic horror film The Woman in Black. The movie centers on a young attorney (Daniel Radcliffe) who goes to settle an estate of a recently deceased eccentric, but discovers that the house belonging to his client may be haunted. In the real estate game, they call say those homes have “Personality”.
I’m a little sick of CBS Films spoiling every scare in the movie in order to promote their scary movie, but I guess it’s already a tough sell when you’re asking the audience to check out a non-mainstream horror sub-genre and to buy Radcliffe in his first major non-Harry Potter role. I still think the movie looks good; I just don’t want to see any more of it in the ads. If spoilers don’t bother you, hit the jump to check out the TV spot along with the new image. The film also stars Ciarán Hinds and recent Golden Globes nominee Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs). The Woman in Black opens February 3, 2012.

Daniel Radcliffe is in talks to play Beat poet Allen Ginsberg in the thriller” Kill Your Darlings. Radcliffe told the French press [via Twitch] that he would “very likely” be playing the literary figure for a film, which would be released in 2012. Twitch did a little more digging and found that after Radcliffe finishes his Broadway run on How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying, he’ll move on to play Ginsberg in Darlings. Written and directed by John Krokidas, the movie revolves around the relationship between Ginsberg, influential authors Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs, and the man who brought them together, Lucien Carr. What makes the movie into a thriller is that Carr served time in 1944 for the murder of his lover, David Kammerer.
The project was first announced back in 2009 with Chris Evans, Jesse Eisenberg, and Ben Whishaw attached to play Kerouac, Ginsberg and Carr, respectively. Obviously, Eisenberg is out, and it’s unknown if Evans and Whishaw are still on board. Radcliffe will next be seen in the gothic thriller The Woman in Black.

CBS Films has released another trailer for the gothic horror film The Woman in Black. The movie stars Daniel Radcliffe as a young attorney who travels to a remote village in order to settle the affairs of an old estate. When he arrives, he discovers that the locals are terrified of a vengeful ghost of a scorned woman who supposedly haunts the estate. Creepy visuals and spooky moments ensue.
I stopped watching this new trailer halfway through because the studio has now released four trailers for the movie and I’m afraid all of the scares and memorable imagery will be spoiled. I know trying to sell a gothic horror film isn’t easy and Radcliffe is trying to build his appeal beyond Harry Potter, but that doesn’t mean we need to see every little scare the movie has to offer. If you’re not concerned about spoilers, hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Ciaran Hinds, Janet McTeer, Liz White, and Alisa Khazanova. The Woman in Black opens February 3, 2012.

Warner Brothers did what they could to drag it out, but after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, the Harry Potter franchise is finally closed. Perhaps not for good – author J.K. Rowling has got her new Potter-centric website, and she may get bored and write another adventure in that universe. But no matter if it comes back or not, for performers Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint Potter will be part of their legacy. They spent ten years playing Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. And no matter what they do, they are as stuck to this as Sean Connery is to James Bond. Continued after the jump.

The trailers keep coming this morning and we’ve got a new one for the gothic horror flick The Woman in Black. For those unfamiliar with the movie, the story centers on a young lawyer (Daniel Radcliffe) who travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorner woman is terrorizing the locals. The new trailer contains most of the footage we saw in the recent UK trailer, but I still like the look of the film and I’m glad I only have to wait a few more months to see it. My only concern is that the trailers may start to spoil some of the scares.
Hit the jump to check out the new trailer along with a creepy motion poster. The film also stars Ciarán Hinds, Janet McTeer, and Shaun Dooley. The Woman in Black opens February 3, 2012.

The UK trailer for the gothic ghost story The Woman in Black has gone online. Daniel Radcliffe stars as a young lawyer who travels to a remote village where he discovers the locals are being terrorized by a vengeful ghost of a scorned woman. Previous trailers have focused on conveying the tone of the movie, but this is the first one to get in depth with the plot and the characters. It’s also the first one that allows Radcliffe to speak a few lines of dialogue. However, it’s the aesthetic of the film that seems to override everything and since the movie looks gorgeous, I have absolutely no problem with that.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Ciaran Hinds, Janet McTeer, Liz White, and Alisa Khazanova. The Woman in Black opens in the US on February 3, 2012 and in the UK on February 10, 2012.
