I haven’t gotten around to seeing Alexandre Aja’s remake of Piranha 3D, but I heard good things all around regarding its creative kills, delightful stupidity, and all-around exploitative nature. It’s a movie that knows what it wants to be an pulls it off. That general consensus combined with a solid box office performance has led to the sequel Piranha 3DD. The new film has the carnivorous fishies headed to a water park, which aren’t really sanitary places to begin with. Dimension Films premiered the first trailer last night at the SpikeTV Scream Awards and it looks like they’ve definitely got the “DD” part down. Also, Ving Rhames’s character apparently shops at the same prosthetics store as Cherry Darling. I have no complaints about gun-legs.
Hit the jump to check out the teaser trailer. The fish food cast also includes Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, Chris Zylka, Meagan Tandy, Katrina Bowden, David Hasselhoff, Christopher Lloyd, Paul Scheer, and Gary Busey. Piranha 3DD opens next year.

John Carpenter is an old man, and he makes old man films. In one way that’s refreshing. He knows where to put his camera in a sequence with multiple people. He knows when to use a close up, and never shoots a film like it’s a TV show. But he’s also a man without a country in new Hollywood, working with low budgets and ambling on with no great respect from those who’ve ripped him off. His latest film, The Ward, was given limited theatrical release before hitting home video. It stars Amber Ward, Danielle Panabaker and Jared Harris in a tale about young girls in the 1960’s who are stuck in a mental institution with a ghost. Our review of the Blu-ray of the The Ward follows after the jump.

Piranha 3DD clearly has no desire to be considered a real movie and if attempting to top their previously-announced stunt casting of Gary Busey by hiring David Hasselhoff. Unfortunately, nothing beats Busey. The new film takes place at a water park so perhaps Hasselhoff will be playing a lifeguard. You know, because he was a lifeguard on Baywatch. So clever, Piranha 3DD.
The film also stars Ving Rhames, Christopher Lloyd, Paul Scheer, Katrina Bowden, Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, Chris Zylka, and David Koechner. Piranha 3DD opens in 3D on November 23rd.

Gary Busey, currently known for the best set of crazy eyes this side of Michelle Bachmann, has joined the cast of Piranha 3DD. The press release describes Busey’s role as “potential fish bait”, but no matter his character, I seriously doubt he’ll be asked to give a performance equal to his Oscar-nominated turn as Buddy Holly in The Buddy Holly Story. That’s right: Gary Busey was a serious actor at one point and not just a walking punchline. But since Piranha 3DD is tongue-in-cheek (before angry fish devour your tongue and cheek), I don’t think that should be a problem. Hopefully, the resurgence of Busey will lead to Comedy Central finally releasing the short-lived series I’m With Busey on to DVD.
Piranha 3DD also stars Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, Chris Zylka, David Koechner, and Meagan Tandy. The film is due out in 3D on November 23rd.

John Carpenter will always be a filmmaker to watch, even when all there is to watch is a half trailer of sorts for his latest, The Ward. The Ward premiered earlier this year at the Toronto International Film Festival, and represents Carpenter’s first feature in nearly a decade after 2001′s Ghost of Mars. Amber Heard stars as Kristen, a woman committed to a psychiatric hospital where she “begins to have strange run-ins with a shadowy phantom who roams the halls when the ward is locked down at night.” Mamie Gummer, Danielle Panabaker, Jared Harris, and Lyndsy Fonseca also star. Check out the clip after the break.

Continuing our first-look image series of movies playing at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, we have images from John Carpenter’s The Ward starring Amber Heard, Mamie Gummer, Danielle Panabaker, Jared Harris, and Lyndsy Fonseca. The Ward is Carpenter’s first film in over a decade and that alone is reason enough to see it. We also have images from Shawn Ku’s Beautiful Boy, which has a killer cast that includes Michael Sheen, Maria Bello, Moon Bloodgood, Alan Tudyk, Kyle Gallner, Austin Nichols, and Meat Loaf Aday.
Hit the jump to check out all the images and synopses for both films. The 2010 Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 9 – 19th.

Every once in a while, you’ll hear a disturbing news account of some mild mannered office employee who suddenly opened fire on his coworkers, a quiet student who abruptly turned his classmates into target practice or a nice father who shockingly hacked his family to pieces. The Crazies preys on our fears of these random, unexpected acts of violence, most effectively in its opening sequence, in which a small town father shows up at a local baseball game presumably loaded and carrying a loaded weapon. More after the jump:

Breck Eisner’s The Crazies might make you believe something this hellacious isn’t just a work of far-flung fiction, but a possible reality. For a Hollywood horror film, that is quite a feat when the weird seems to gush from the wounds of multi-million dollar projects that often strive for shock over true substance or coherency. Eisner, working off of George A. Romero’s 1973 original The Crazies, uses a believable story with the required scares and thrills without succumbing to sheer absurdity or grotesque violence. By using focused and tight camerawork, a narrative that is easy to follow, and quality acting, Eisner delivers a worthy entry in the horror genre that is a pleasure from start to finish, even for non-genre fans.

A sizzle reel for Breck Eisner’s upcoming horror film The Crazies has just gone up online and it’s pretty damn cool. For those who don’t know, a sizzle reel is a combination of a featurette with a trailer. You don’t see any behind-the-scenes stuff, but you have the actors talking about the film, while some really intense action is happening on screen. I’m hearing good things about the movie, which is terrific since 90% of mainstream horror movies seem to phone in it these days.

The Crazies hits theaters tomorrow. Look for Bill Graham’s review later tonight.

Director Breck Eisner’s shocker The Crazies is set to debut in theatres on February 26. In the last few days, I’ve gotten the chance to speak with some of the people that brought this reboot to life. Most recently, I talked with one of the film’s stars, Danielle Panabaker. Hit the jump for her thoughts on The Crazies and what we can expect to see from her in the future.

Opening on February 26 is The Crazies, Overture Films’ remake of the 1973 George Romero film of the same name. Starring Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, and Danielle Panabaker, it centers on a small town whose residents become infected by a virus that causes them to go…well, you know. Recently, I got the opportunity to do a phone interview with the film’s director, Breck Eisner. Hit the jump to get his thoughts on remaking Romero, his philosophy on constructing an effective horror movie, an update on his upcoming Flash Gordon reboot, and more.

Overture Films has sent over two new movie clips and six new images from director Breck Eisner’s The Crazies. Based on the George Romero film, The Crazies stars Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Danielle Panabaker and Joe Anderson and it’s about four friends being trapped in their hometown after everyone goes insane. Hit the jumpt to check out the new assetts and the full synopsis. The Crazies infects theaters February 26.

Overture Films has released two new TV spots from The Crazies which stars Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Danielle Panabaker and Joe Anderson. If you’ve been looking forward to the film which opens February 26, the spots feature some new footage. But since each spot is only 30 seconds, it’s not much. Hit the jump to check them out.

Overture has provided us with three new banners for their upcoming horror flick The Crazies and I’m not sure if they’re the best way to promote Ogden Marsh, the setting of the film. They say, “Welcome to Ogden Marsh, the friendliest place on Earth,” but that’s pretty difficult to believe. For starters, have they compared Ogden Marsh to every other place on Earth? And how do you measure “friendliest”? This is a highly dubious promotion. Oh, and the people they put on the posters appear to have a vascular problem and they’re wielding wrenches, pitchforks, and guns. This may also be a bit of a turn-off to potential visitors.
Based off the 1973 George Romero film of the same name, The Crazies is directed by Breck Eisner, and stars Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Joe Anderson, and Danielle Panabaker. Yahoo! Movies has premiered a new trailer for Breck Eisner’s remake of George Romero’s 1973 horror film, The Crazies. The film stars Timothy Olyphant (Deadwood), Radha Mitchell (Surrogates), Joe Anderson (Across the Universe), and Danielle Panabaker (Friday the 13th, 2009) as the unfortunate residents of a town where residents are inexplicably turning, to quote Robert Downey Jr. in Zodiac, “a tad bit fuckered in the head.” I was lucky enough to get to go to the set this past March where I saw some cool stuff, especially in terms of the special effects make-up, which is important when you’re making a gruesome horror movie. You can click here to read my full set report where I go in depth about the make-up and how time stops when in you’re in a high school classroom no matter how old you are.
Hit the jump to check out the new trailer along with the official synopsis. The Crazies hits theaters on February 26, 2010.
