Fox CEO Tom Rothman Talks 48fps, THE WOLVERINE, PROMETHEUS, CHRONICLE 2, DIE HARD 5, Comic Book Movies, and a Lot More

At this year’s CinemaCon, I was able to land an exclusive interview with Tom Rothman (Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Fox Filmed Entertainment).  While we posted selected portions of the interview last week, after the jump you can read the entire conversation which covers a lot more than comic book movies.  I love getting to speak with actors and directors, but if you really want to find out which projects are moving forward and why certain decisions were made, a studio head has all the answers.

During the wide-ranging conversation we talked about 48 frames per second, the shift towards higher quality films on Fox’s slate, Prometheus (and it’s rating), Daredevil, Fantastic Four, the Chronicle sequel, The Wolverine, the Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel, a New Mutants movie, A Good Day to Die Hard (Die Hard 5), and more.  Hit the jump to read what he had to say.

David James Kelly to Rewrite DAREDEVIL Script

As you can see from the image above, Daredevil is pissed at being left out of all The Avengers coverage.  Luckily we have a little bit of news on that front.  In a recent interview with Tom Rothman, 2oth Century Fox’s CEO, Steve gleaned some info about the David Slade-directed reboot of Daredevil, notably:

“It’s in development; we’re working on the script.”

Not much to go on, but at least we now know who is working on the script. Deadline reports that David James Kelly is doing a rewrite for the script, one that appears to be based on Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s classic 1986 “Born Again” arc, spanning issues #227-233.  The story centers on the Kingpin discovering Daredevil’s true identity which results in the hero’s life turning upside-down.  While I’m fully expecting some sort of hero origin story to be worked in, I’m curious: who do you think should play Daredevil this time around?

Steve sat down with 20th Century Fox CEO recently at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and we’ve been bringing you highlights from their wide-ranging conversation.  We already shared what Rothman had to say about a New Mutants movie and the rating for Prometheus, the Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel, and now we wanted to share the CEO’s updates on a few highly anticipated Fox properties.  Rothman talked about the status of the studio’s Fantastic Four reboot, Daredevil, and a sequel to this year’s hit superhero pic Chronicle.  Hit the jump for what he had to say.

Ever since 2008′s Iron Man, Marvel Studios has carved out a profitable niche in Hollywood independently financing the film adaptations of the Marvel comics.  However, because of the nature of film rights, a few of Marvel’s most popular properties are housed at other studios.  Fox has three: X-Men, Daredevil, and Fantastic Four.  In a recent interview, Fox executive Tom Rothman stressed the studio is eager to continue development on the next chapter in those respective stories—a sequel to X-Men: First Class and reboots for Daredevil and Fantastic Four.

FRINGE’S Brad Caleb Kane to Write Fox’s DAREDEVIL Reboot

20th Century Fox has hired Fringe writer/producer Brad Caleb Kane to pen its Daredevil reboot. Per Heat Vision, the studio wants Kane to adapt Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s classic 1986 arc (spanning issues #227-233) “Born Again” for director David Slade (30 Days of Night). In that run, Daredevil’s nemesis the Kingpin discovers his secret identity by virtue of Matt Murdock’s former secretary, Karen Page, in exchange for a shot of heroin. In addition to working on Fringe, Kane has also contributed a draft of Columbia’s vampire novel adaptation The Historian and a script for a Richard Pryor biopic which has Bill Condon attached to direct.

The report mentions that Kane’s “energy and passion for the material” helped the scribe land the gig. He’ll most likely need every ounce of both in adapting what is considered by many one of the greatest Daredevil arcs of all time. Director David Slade Talks DAREDEVIL and THE WOLVERINE

Director David Slade has taken to the Twitter machine to talk about Daredevil and Wolverine.  Slade recently became attached to direct Daredevil, but Darren Aronofsky’s sudden departure from The Wolverine has led to speculation that Slade could take the helm since he was one of the lead contenders for the gig.  Slade has now clarified not only his plans for Daredevil but also his current status in regards to The Wolverine.  Speaking about Daredevil, Slade tweeted:

So without breaking confidentiality, yes Daredevil, we have a great outline for a very strong character driven take on Mr Matt Murdock. It will bare no relation to the previous Daredevil movie in any way. We are at early planning stages and have not yet discussed any cast.

David Slade to Direct DAREDEVIL Reboot [UPDATED with Story Details]

Director David Slade (30 Days of Night) has been tapped to helm a reboot of the Daredevil franchise for 20^th Century Fox. Given that the studio was in the position of either making another Daredevil film in the next few years or letting the rights to the franchise revert back to Disney/Marvel, a reboot was all but inevitable. Variety reports that the film will not contain material from the 2003 Mark Steven Johnson-directed Daredevil flick that starred Ben Affleck, nor the spinoff Elektra, so it appears that this will be a proper reboot.

Slade has been somewhat of a hot property following his first big-budget outing with The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, having been in consideration to helm the Wolverine sequel, Pride and Predjudice and Zombies, and the film adaptation of The Hunger Games. While I didn’t think 2003’s Daredevil was a complete disaster, it was obvious that the studio and director had differing opinions of how to tackle the material. Here’s hoping Slade gets to make the film he envisions. No word on how soon production would start, but Slade is currently attached to helm the vampire horror flick The Last Voyage of the Demeter, so one presumes that Daredevil would immediately follow. Next stop: casting the Man Without Fear. [Update: Heat Vision reports that the story will be based off the acclaimed Frank Miller/David Mazzucchelli story arc Born Again, which had the Kingpin discovering Daredevil's secret identity, Matt Murdoch, and destroying Murdoch's life.]

David Scarpa is Writing DAREDEVIL Reboot at Fox

The Hero Complex is reporting David Scarpa (The Day the Earth Stood Still) has been hired to write the reboot of Daredevil at the 20th Century Fox affiliated production company New Regency.  While rumors of Fox wanting to reboot Daredevil were online last year, this is the first news about anyone being hired.  While I’d love to say I’m excited by this hiring…I’m not.  More after the jump:

Disney and Marvel Web Up SPIDER-MAN T.V. Rights

Hello, True Believers! Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few days, you’ve heard about Disney’s acquisition of Marvel Entertainment, all the details of which can be read here. Now, there have been a lot of panicky reactions shooting across the interwebs since this news has leaked, some concerned with the future quality of Marvel’s film properties, some concerned with the fate of the comic book wing of Marvel Entertainment, and some with Marvel’s preexisting television projects. Today, however, we have some potentially very good news for fans of TV’s “Spectacular Spider-Man” and for Spidey fans in general: Sony has relinquished all television rights for the web slinger in favor of some more favorable film options for the property. Not only does this open up the future for animated projects, but could possibly give us the opportunity for a Smallville-esque live action Spider-series. Is your spider-sense tingling? Fox Set to Reboot FANTASTIC FOUR Franchise

In the wake of Disney’s purchase of Marvel this morning, Fox is hurrying to reboot a Marvel property is still owns: “Fantastic Four”. The franchise is one of four Fox owns in perpetuity, irrespective of Disney’s $4 billion deal, including “X-Men,” “Daredevil,” and “Silver Surfer.” Thought details are scant on the new project, a few names have been dropped. The deal isn’t done but it’s too sensational a story to get bogged down in the corporate legalese and business intricacies when it comes to discussing one of 2009′s biggest entertainment deals of the year.  The $4 billion Disney-Marvel merger could have huge ramifications and while this is all speculation that is subject to further (and further, and further) reporting and interviews, I wanted to give my thoughts on this news because my thoughts are better than everyone else’s thoughts.  My thoughts are magic.

Marvel Must Be Rebooting Daredevil Because Katee Sackhoff Bought Some Comics

It’s Memorial Day weekend.  News is unbelievably slow.  Yesterday, one of the top stories was how an extra in “Spider-Man 3″ killed herself.  That’s how slow it is.  And when news is slow, you gotta get creative.  And by “creative”, I mean “Take minor incidents and speculate like you’re on cable news.”

Today’s speculation comes courtesy of Golden Apple Comics who witnessed actress Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck from “Battlestar Galactica”) buying all of their Typhoid Mary comics and then saying she wanted to get a part in a Marvel movie.  Then, ComingSoon proceeds to speculate that since Typhoid is a foe of both Daredevil and Deadpool, this could be a part in either a new Daredevil movie or the upcoming Deadpool spin-off.

Because an actress bought some comic books.

All actors and actresses who read Collider: you have a grand opportunity.  Go to your local comic store and just buy a bunch of comics.  Even better, pick up the most obscure, confounding characters you can.  Buy Namor or Dazzler or Rawhide Kid.  You have the power to send the geek world into a frenzy for less than $50.
