Fantastic Fest 2010: TRUE LEGEND Review

Yuen Woo-Ping knows how to choreograph a fight, but the challenges of directing a compelling movie aren’t quite as easy to overcome. While he has a long history of telling the Drunken Fist story, this is the first dramatic telling of the narrative and the results are sadly mixed. True Legend is a wild romp through the long and winding road of Beggar So that feels oddly pieced together despite the rousing final act. The film has its ups and downs, but the end result is a bit of a mess that leaves one feeling that it could have been so much more. Hit the jump for the full review.

DEATH RACE 2000 DVD Review

by Hunter Daniels    Posted: July 2nd, 2010 at 6:38 am

Death Race 2000 is the real deal. A truly epic piece of Roger Corman produced madness, full of blood, guts, ridiculous character names, car crashes, and of course those wonderful, pre-plastic surgery era gratuitous nipple shots.* But what makes Death Race 2000 stand out from say, Gone in 60 Seconds, is that it’s more than just the above elements. Underneath the slapstick gore and voyeuristic charms Death Race 2000 is also a sly social and political satire that is every bit as prescient as Network or Robocop. More after the jump:

THE RAIN Review – One of David Carradine’s Last Films

The Rain movie image - slice.jpg

One of the great things about writing about films is that on occasion it gives you an opportunity to see films before others. I recently had the chance to see The Rain, a low budget independent horror film from writer-director Douglas Schulze. I must say – I was impressed. Not only by the quality of the film but also by the originality of the plot and structure. So far the film has been getting raves on the horror festival circuit and at this point it doesn’t have any distribution. However, with a bit of luck all that will soon change. More after the jump:

David Carradine Dead; Found Hanged in Bangkok

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 4th, 2009 at 10:47 am

headline-1.jpgAccording to various reports, actor David Carradine has committed suicide by hanging himself in a hotel room in Bangkok while working on his latest film, “Stretch”.  He was 72.

Best known for his leading role as “Kwai Chang Caine”, a Shaolin priest traveling the 1800s American frontier West on the TV Show “Kung Fu”, Carradine had made a bit of a resurgance in recent years due in no small part to his fantastic performance as the title character in Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” films.  I wish I had more familiarity with Carradine’s work but I will say that his “Superman” speech in that film is unforgettable.

Our deepest condolences go out to his friends and family.
