With less than two weeks left in 2011, it’s time to set our sights on movies that will be opening in 2012. Since the coming year is releasing a ton of big budget movies that will dominate media coverage, we thought we’d take a moment to highlight some of the lesser known fare that will be gracing the screens over the  next twelve months. We’ve got some new posters that will be a first look at these projects for some of you and a gentle reminder for others. First up is the superhero “found footage” thriller Chronicle by director Josh Trank (The Kill Point). Trank’s cinematic directorial debut features three teenagers who become imbued with superpowers and how those abilities darken their lives. Next, from David Cronenberg (A Dangerous Method) comes Cosmopolis, starring Robert Pattinson (Twilight). The adaptation of the Don DeLillo’s novel by the same name follows a young billionaire (Pattinson) as his limo traverses Manhattan in search of a haircut (not making this up). Finally, the animated Rise of the Guardians, which has the most charming poster in my opinion, is based off of the “Guardians of Childhood” book series by William Joyce and features childhood legends teaming up to take on the Boogeyman. Hit the jump to check out the posters.

A DANGEROUS METHOD Review

[This is a reprint of my review from the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.  A Dangerous Method opens tomorrow in limited release.]

Psychoanalysis is a funny profession. Its doctors aren’t like cardiologists or gastroenterologists. Your heart is your heart, your intestines are your intestines, and so forth. Psychoanalysis, on the other hand, attempt to impose rationality on the irrationality of emotions. It works from a vague definition of “normal” and then tries to determine why a behavior deviates from that unspecified norm. Sigmund Freud believed it was not the place of psychoanalysts to simply point out the abnormality, while his protégé Carl Jung thought that the practice was worthless if it couldn’t be advanced to help those in need. These two figures illustrate the clash of the ego, id, and super-ego in David Cronenberg‘s A Dangerous Method, a film which brilliantly explores Freudian concepts and how we wish to indulge our base emotions but instead build a wall of reason and science to imprison our desires. However, in attempting to convey this blockade, A Dangerous Method inadvertently cuts off its emotional connection to the audience.

Fox Passes on David Cronenberg’s THE FLY Sequel; Viggo Mortensen Still Attached to EASTERN PROMISES 2

Last month, we received confirmation that David Cronenberg had written a sequel to his 1986 classic horror film, The Fly.  At the time, Cronenberg explained “The Fly is not exactly a remake, it’s sort of a sequel, kinda. Yeah, that was a thing. I’ve written a script of that, and I don’t know if that’s going to really happen, but that has to do with Fox.”  According to The Playlist, Fox has made their decision and that decision is to pass on the movie.  This doesn’t mean Fox won’t remake The Fly at some point, but if they do, it probably won’t be with Cronenberg.  On the one hand, it frees him up to visit new territory, but it also opens the door that some hacky director could come in and deliver a pointless new version (e.g. The Thing).

However, Cronenberg isn’t moving on to completely new material.  Hit the jump for an update on Eastern Promises 2.

New Images from David Cronenberg’s COSMOPOLIS Starring Robert Pattinson

New images from David Cronenberg‘s adaptation of Don DeLillo‘s Cosmopolis have found their way online.  The film stars Robert Pattinson as a newlywed billionaire who ends up losing his bride and his billions in a single day.  I’m willing to give Pattinson a pass on the Twilight films since I think the material is untenable, and I want to see if he rises to the challenge of a demanding lead role in a David Cronenberg movie.  (However, I feel it’s important to mention that I never saw Remember Me or Water for Elephants.)

Hit the jump to check out the images.  The film impressive cast also stars Sarah Gadon, Kevin Durand, Jay Baruchel, Samantha Morton, Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti, and Mathieu AmalricCosmopolis will likely hit theaters in 2012.

Three New Clips from A DANGEROUS METHOD Starring Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortensen

Three new clips from David Cronenberg‘s A Dangerous Method have gone online. The movie focuses on the real-life relationship between doctors Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) and Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) and the complicated patient between them (Keira Knightley).  These clips show the growing relationships between the characters, but they also demonstrate the sterile conversations between the characters.  All emotions are house in clinical terms, which is the point, but I found it created too much distance between the audience and the characters.

Hit the jump to check out the clips.  A Dangerous Method opens in limited release on November 23rd.

Sony Pictures Classics has released 22 new images from David Cronenberg‘s A Dangerous Method.  Here’s the brief synopsis:

Seduced by the challenge of an impossible case, the driven Dr. Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) takes the unbalanced yet beautiful Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) as his patient in A Dangerous Method. Jung’s weapon is the method of his master, the renowned Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen). Both men fall under Sabina’s spell.

I liked the film when I saw it at TIFF but found it a bit too sterile.  However, it’s Cronenberg which means it’s at least worth your time.  Hit the jump to check out the images.  A Dangerous Method also stars Vincent Cassel, and opens in limited release on November 23rd.

David Cronenberg Confirms He’s Written a Follow-Up to THE FLY

Way back in 2009, before anyone had ever heard of the iPhone 5 or planking, it was announced that director David Cronenberg was set to develop a reboot of his 1986 classic The Fly. Following the announcement, word on the project pretty much went silent. However, Cronenberg recently offered an update on the film confirming that he’s written a script, and it’s more of a sequel than a reboot.  Speaking with STYD, the director had this to say:

The Fly is not exactly a remake, it’s sort of a sequel, kinda. Yeah, that was a thing. I’ve written a script of that, and I don’t know if that’s going to really happen, but that has to do with Fox.”

So it sounds like the fate of the project is in the studio’s hands. Given that it’s been a while since Cronenberg first started work on the follow-up, it appears that the film isn’t much of a priority for Fox at the moment. Whether the film will see the light of day is up for debate. The director is currently busy touting his latest film, the period psychology/sex drama (you can pretty much add “sex” to the description of every Cronenberg film) A Dangerous Method. He’s also busy with post-production on the Robert Pattinson-starred drama Cosmopolis. For a refresher, hit the jump to watch the theatrical trailer for 1986’s The Fly which features a shirtless Jeff Goldblum.

We’ve got a couple of release dates for you this evening, per Box Office Mojo. First up, two hotly anticipated films now have prime awards season release dates. David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method will open in limited release on November 23rd, opposite two other Oscar bait limited release films: The Descendants and The Artist. The film stars Michael Fassbender, Viggo Mortensen and Keira Knightley and centers on the relationship between Carl Jung (Fassbender), his mentor Sigmund Freud (Mortenson), and the woman that came between them (Knightley).

Additionally, Roman Polanski’s character drama Carnage has been slated for limited release on December 16th, going up against the Meryl Streep-starred Margaret Thatcher drama The Iron Lady, also opening in limited release. The stellar Carnage cast includes Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly and centers on two couples who come together to settle a schoolyard fight between their kids. Finally, Paramount has moved My Mother’s Curse from March to November 2nd, 2012. Starring Seth Rogen and Barbara Streisand, the film centers on an inventor who invites his mother along for a cross-country trip while he attempts to sell his new product and connect with a long lost love.

Media Rights Captial Acquires David Cronenberg’s Adaptation of AS SHE CLIMBED ACROSS THE TABLE

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: August 5th, 2011 at 1:15 pm

Media Rights Capital has acquired the rights to Jonathan Lethem’s slightly insane novel As She Climbed Across the Table. We reported last year that David Cronenberg is directing (a fact I previously failed to remember), and now Deadline reports that MRC has acquired the package with Bruce Wagner (A Nightmare on Elm Street 3) writing the screenplay. Steven Zaillian and Garrett Basch are producing. The story centers on a love triangle between a university professor, his particle physicist girlfriend, and the black hole that results from her experiments attempting to replicate the origins of the universe.

The professor’s girlfriend spurns him in favor of the black hole (which she’s named “Lack”), and the academic risks being sucked into the metaphysical rabbit hole in order to win her back. While the premise is decidedly strange, I relish the thought of Cronenberg taking on this Eternal Sunshine-esque material. With MRC’s backing, hopefully the director gets to work on this one soon. Cronenberg’s next film, A Dangerous Method, will premiere this fall at the Toronto Film Festival. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of the book.

The first trailer for director David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method has been released, and it’s fantastic. Based on Christopher Hampton’s 2002 play The Talking Cure, the film centers on the relationship between Carl Jung (played by Michael Fassbender), his mentor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen), and Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), the woman who came between them. The trailer is intense, showcasing what are sure to be some powerhouse performances, as well as a score by Howard Shore. Oh, and there’s sex. Lots of sex. This is Cronenberg after all. Sony Pictures Classics is set to release the film, hopefully sometime this year. Hit the jump to watch the trailer for yourself.

The first image from David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis plus a first look at the puppet model for Gris Grimly’s Pinocchio has gone online.  Cosmopolis is based on the Don DeLillo novel about a newlywed billionaire (Robert Pattinson) who ends up losing his bride and his billions in a single day.  In addition to Pattinson, the film features an exciting cast including Jay Baruchel, Samantha Morton, Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti, Mathieu Amalric, Kevin Durand, and Sarah Gadon.  The first image from the film was snapped by Cronenberg’s daughter Caitlin, who is a talented photographer in her own right.

The Pinocchio puppet comes from Gris Grimly and Mark Gustafson’s adaptation of Grimly’s gritty but faithful graphic novel adaptation of Carlo Colodi’s famous story.  We previously reported that Guillermo del Toro will be producing with the Jim Henson Company to turn the book into a 3D stop-motion animated feature.  The production is also working from a script by composer/screenwriter Nick Cave (The Proposition).  This puppet isn’t being used in the film, but it’s a model to show potential distributors.  Hit the jump to check out both images.
