In David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Rooney Mara tore up every second that she was on screen as the complicated and complex computer hacker Lisbeth Salander. For that Academy Award-nominated performance, she was honored with a Virtuoso Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF). Collider was there to cover and attend the event, and we’ve compiled the highlights of what the actress had to say, both on the press line and during the Q&A.

While there, Rooney Mara talked about what the whole award season experience has been like for her, how she felt like she didn’t get to know director David Fincher at all from the four days she worked on The Social Network, that she doesn’t know when the next films in the Millennium trilogy will start shooting but that she would love to do them simultaneously, and that if Fincher decided not to direct the other films, it would be hard without him but she would get through it with his blessing. Check out what she had to say after the jump.

Oscars 2012: Adam Predicts the Nominees

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 21st, 2012 at 2:38 pm

2012-oscar-academy-awards-poster-slice1

As I’ve been covering awards season pretty extensively here on the site over the past few months, I figured it would be appropriate to (foolishly) try to predict the upcoming Oscar nominations. It’s been a fairly tame year, as a few frontrunners were singled out early in the race and have held their ground throughout the grueling awards season. We haven’t been without a few surprises, as Steven Spielberg’s War Horse took a massive tumble following snubs from most of the major guilds, and David Fincher has surged back into the race bringing his adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo with him.

Though there are plenty of safe bets when it comes to the 2012 Oscar nominations, there are still a few wildcards and tricky categories. I’ve put on my prognosticating cap (those interested can purchase one of these nifty hats at your local Target) and compiled a list of who and what I think will make the cut. Hit the jump to see how I think the nods will stack up when they’re announced on January 24th.

Keanu Reeves Documentary SIDE BY SIDE Tackles Film vs. Digital Debate; Includes Interviews with Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan, and David Fincher

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 9th, 2012 at 11:10 am

A curious little website has popped up announcing a new documentary produced by Keanu Reeves that tackles one of the foremost issues facing filmmakers today: the advent of digital filmmaking. Entitled Side by Side, the documentary takes an in-depth look at the issue of film vs. digital, and “examines all aspects of filmmaking – from capture, to edit, to visual effects, to color correction, to distribution to archive.” Through interviews with numerous well-respected masters of the medium, Side by Side “explores what has been gained, what is lost and what the future might bring.” Take this sample quote from Christopher Nolan:

“No credible source really has been claiming to have invented something that is aesthetically superior to film at this point.”

The documentary will feature Reeves interviewing filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Lana and Andy Wachowski, George Lucas, James Cameron, Steven Soderbergh, and many more. Hit the jump for more details.

Directors Guild Nominations Announced; Contenders Include Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, and David Fincher

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 9th, 2012 at 10:36 am

As we move ever closer to the Academy Awards, the director’s guild has just announced the five nominees who will contend for the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2011. The DGA’s are a major prognosticator for the Best Director award at the Oscars, as only six times has the DGA winner not gone on to win Best Director. This year’s nominees include Martin Scorsese for Hugo, Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris, Michel Hazanavicious for The Artist, Alexander Payne for The Descendants, and David Fincher for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Hit the jump for more, including my thoughts on the nominees.

Sony Says DRAGON TATTOO Sequel Still Moving Forward

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 2nd, 2012 at 4:11 pm

While director David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is far from a box office bomb, the feature film adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s bestselling crime novel hasn’t exactly broken records. The $90 million pic has grossed a little over $60 million domestically since its release on December 20th, but given the widespread popularity of Larsson’s book series many believed the film would be performing better. While Sony has been planning on adapting all three books in Larsson’s Millennium series from the start, Dragon Tattoo’s box office performance had me wondering if their plan would be altered. My question was given an answer today, with the news that Sony is still moving forward with an adaptation of The Girl Who Played with Fire. Hit the jump for more.

David Fincher Talks THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, Deleted Scenes, His Favorite STAR WARS Movie, Test Screenings, and a Lot More

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: December 22nd, 2011 at 12:57 pm

Last weekend Sony held a big press junket in New York City for director David Fincher‘s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and I got to participate in a press conference with Fincher, Rooney Mara, and Daniel CraigClick here if you missed it.  As most of you know, Dragon Tattoo is the first in Stieg Larson’s Millennium trilogy and it centers on a disgraced journalist (Craig) who’s hired to investigate the mysterious 40-year-old disappearance of a young woman.  Mara plays Lisbeth Salander, a brilliant young hacker who teams up with Craig.

Shortly after the press conference ended, I got to sit down with Fincher for an exclusive interview.  We talked about deleted scenes (the first cut of Dragon Tattoo was 3 hours and seven minutes!), extended cuts, if he would change his previous movies like George Lucas has changed Star Wars, what filmmakers/collaborators he shows his films to first, if he does test screenings or just friends and family screenings, his favorite Star Wars movie, and I got updates on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Cleopatra and House of Cards.  Hit the jump to either read or listen to the interview.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 20th, 2011 at 11:48 am

Director David Fincher has reached the point where he can work his magic on almost any movie.  There’s nothing journeyman about his approach and he hasn’t shied away from taking complex narratives and turning them into powerful cinema.  But what can he do with a simplistic, poorly-structured narrative?  The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is too sprawling to be a tight little thriller like Panic Room, lacks the complexity of Zodiac, and has a weaker hook than Se7en.  But it’s an international best-seller and readers have warmed to a lukewarm detective story embellished with a unique female protagonist.  There’s enough energy in the score and the performances to support the inconsistent technical aspects, but The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo currently stands as Fincher’s weakest crime-thriller to date.

With director David Fincher‘s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo set to open tomorrow night, over the weekend, Sony held a press junket in New York City and I got to participate in a press conference with director David Fincher, Rooney Mara, and Daniel Craig.

During the forty minute press conference, Craig and Mara talked about what they did to get ready for the film and how they made the characters their own, how Fincher got permission to use Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song,” the relationship between Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist (Craig’s character), the casting process, collaborating with Fincher, how they’ll probably shoot the sequels back to back, the amount of takes Fincher likes to do, and so much more.  Hit the jump to either read or listen to the press conference.

David Fincher Reveals What He Had Planned for His Take on SPIDER-MAN

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 19th, 2011 at 12:15 pm

After Sony scrapped Spider-Man 4, effectively ending director Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire’s run with the character, the studio moved quickly to assemble a reboot in order to keep the franchise alive. Sony put together a shortlist of directors to take over the job, and while Marc Webb eventually ended up with the gig, David Fincher was apparently on Sony’s list (he was also considered to direct the first Spider-Man). The director is currently doing the press rounds for his latest effort The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but he recently took a moment to talk about what his vision of Spider-Man would have looked like. It’s pretty fantastic, and I suggest you hit the jump to see what he had to say.

David Fincher Talks Favorite STAR WARS Movie and Explains Why He Won’t Alter His Previous Films

Last Christmas I landed one of my dream interviews: I got to sit down with director David Fincher for over forty-five minutes and we talked about The Social Network, how he makes movies, why he wanted to direct The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Zodiac, The Game Blu-ray, and so much more.  If you’re a fan of Fincher’s and missed it, click here.  I promise you’ll learn a lot about the way he makes movies.

However, while we covered a lot of subjects, there were many things I just didn’t have time to ask.  So when I sat down with him the other day in New York City for another exclusive interview for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, I decided to bring up some of the questions I never asked.  While the full interview will run in the coming days, I’ll tease you with a few things: I asked Fincher if he prefers Star Wars or Star Trek, which is his favorite Star Wars movie, and if he ever alter or edit a previous movie as George Lucas has with Star Wars.  Hit the jump for his answers.

David Fincher Provides Updates on 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, CLEOPATRA, and Netflix Series HOUSE OF CARDS

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 17th, 2011 at 1:38 pm

One of the most talented directors working today, David Fincher is somebody whose films are eagerly anticipated by a multitude of fans from the moment they’re announced. When word got out that a “Facebook movie” was in the works, 99% of people wrote it off as a cash grab. That all changed when Fincher signed on to The Social Network as director (a script by Aaron Sorkin didn’t hurt either). Fincher is currently doing the press rounds for his latest directorial effort: a large-scale R-rated adaptation of the wildly popular book The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Steve is in New York for the film’s press junket and he recently got the chance to sit down with the director for an exclusive interview. While we’ll have the full interview up early next week, we wanted to share what Fincher had to say about a few of his potential upcoming projects. The director gave updates on his 3D adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the biopic epic Cleopatra starring Angelina Jolie, and the Kevin Spacey-starred Netflix series House of Cards, for which he’s directing the pilot. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

With director David Fincher‘s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo set to open in a few days, earlier today I attended a press conference in New York City with Fincher, Rooney Mara, and Daniel Craig.  In the coming days I’ll have a transcript (with audio), but I wanted to post a bit of news from the interview today.

Even though the first film has yet to open, with the popularity of Stieg Larson’s Millennium trilogy, it’s almost certain Dragon Tattoo will be a big hit for Sony and they’ll likely move ahead with the sequels as fast as they can.  Since the second and third books (The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest) are one story, Fincher was asked if he might shoot the sequels back to back.  Continued after the jump.

The Five Most Badass Female Leads in Movie History

Badass-Female-Movie-Role-slice

With Rooney Mara (Youth in Revolt) set to star as rebellious hacker Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo next week, we thought we’d take a look back at past female badasses in cinematic history. Noomi Rapace nailed the role in the original Swedish version, so Mara will have a lot to live up to. Not only will she be compared to the performance of her predecessor, but also to the relatively few female heroines that came before her. Will Mara equal or surpass Rapace? Can she hang with the baddest ladies in movie history? Will she impress us enough to fight her way to the top? Hit the jump to check out our selection of the five most badass female leads of all time.

David Fincher Addresses THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Embargo Controversy; Says He Wouldn’t Have Shown Film to NYFCC

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 6th, 2011 at 12:23 pm

Just a few days ago a pretty significant controversy erupted over The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It began when The New Yorker’s film critic David Denby announced that he would be breaking the review embargo imposed on the film by publishing his review this week (yesterday, to be exact). He was able to see the film when Sony agreed to a last-minute screening of the pic after the New York Film Critics Circle moved up their voting deadline in order to be the first out the gate in the awards race. Uber-producer Scott Rudin (The Social Network, No Country for Old Men) was naturally upset, and you can read his email exchange with Denby (along with Matt’s thoughts on the matter) here.

That about brings us up to speed, and now director David Fincher has weighed in on the matter. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.
