Exclusive Media Group has acquired worldwide rights to the comedy Outrun. The “high-octane, action romantic comedy” was written by Dax Shepard, who will also star in and co-direct the film with David Palmer. Joining Shepard in the cast is Kristen Bell, Bradley Cooper, Tom Arnold, Kristin Chenoweth, Beau Bridges, David Koechner, Joy Bryant (Parenthood), and Ryan Hansen (Party Down). The film centers on an ex-getaway driver (Shepard) who exits the Witness Protection program to drive his pretty girlfriend (Bell) to Los Angeles so that she can land her dream job. The authorities and his former gang (led by Cooper) get wind of his reappearance and set out to chase him down. This isn’t Shepard’s first time behind the camera, as he also co-directed 2010’s Brothers Justice with Palmer.

This is a pretty great cast here, and I can see them having fun with the silly premise. I’m actually surprised Cooper is fitting the film into his schedule, as he’s quite the busy guy at the moment. He’s currently filming David O. Russell’s The Silver Linings Playbook, and he’s set to move on to Alex ProyasParadise Lost next, followed by Steven Soderbergh’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Shepard has actually proved himself to be a solid dramatic actor on NBC’s vastly underrated Parenthood. The show comes from Friday Night LightsJason Katims and if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend you check it out. Hit the jump for the full press release regarding Outrun.

FINAL DESTINATION 5 Review

by Bill Graham    Posted: August 12th, 2011 at 4:34 am

Sometimes you get what you want. If you have been a fan of the previous entries in the Final Destination series, the fifth entry is ready to prove that this franchise hasn’t given in to death just yet. A sequel like this one could feel like more of the same, yet the magnificence of going over the top with ridiculous deaths is half of the charm of the series. People are going to die, in a certain order, but the other appeal is that you never know what is going to get them and when. At least, that should be the setup, and that’s exactly what Final Destination 5 gets right. Director Steven Quale and screenwriter Eric Heisserer embrace the inevitability of the deaths, but don’t telegraph the how. Along the way we are treated to two outstanding set pieces, even more deaths, and pleasing use of 3D where it counts. The film plays as more black comedy than horror, but there are cringe worthy moments that don’t involve the gore. Hit the jump for my full review.

Emma Bell and Nicholas D'Agosto Interview FINAL DESTINATION 5 slice

With director Steven Quale’s Final Destination 5 opening this weekend, we’ve been provided with 5 clips from the film.  Since we all know what a Final Destination movie is about, I’m not going to try and explain the story.  The important thing to know is the movie was shot in 3D and based on the footage I saw at Comic-Con, it’s really worth paying the extra money to see it in 3D.  Trust me, the footage looked fantastic and 3D is the only way I’d see this movie.  In addition, Hunter covered the press junket yesterday and he told me that the film was great and the 3D added a lot.  Look for his video interviews with the cast in the coming days.  Until then, check out the 2D footage after the jump.

Final Destination 5 stars Emma Bell, Nick D’Agosto, Miles Fisher, Arlen Escarpeta, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, P.J. Byrne, Ellen Wroe, Courtney B. Vance, David Koechner, and Tony Todd.

SAVED BY THE BELL Meets FINAL DESTINATION 5 in Miles Fisher’s “New Romance” Music Video

Final Destination 5 star Miles Fisher’s is also a musician and creator of viral parodies.  He’s blended both for his single “New Romance” where he and his fellow Final Destination 5 stars take on a Saved by the Bell look and promptly get slaughtered in a variety of hilarious ways.  It’s yet another acknowledgement that these movies may not be intended to scare as much as they’re designed for grotesque laughs.  Also, if you ever wanted to see Jessie Spano get destroyed by her own locker, this is the video for you.

Hit the jump to check out the parody.  The film and music video also stars Nicholas D’Agosto, Emma Bell, Arlen Escarpeta, P.J. Byrne, Ellen Wroe, Jacqueline MacInnes-Wood, and David Koechner in the Mr. Belding role.  Final Destination 5 opens in 3D on August 12th.

I’m letting everyone know right out of the gate that I’m cheating a little on this week’s “Top 5.” As you may know by now, every week I do my best to condense all of our weekly coverage into what the editorial staff deems our “Top 5″ stories. This week, I find that we have a plethora of coverage for various titles. As a result, after the jump you’ll find that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, John Carter, and Final Destination 5 all have multiple links. Also included in this week’s installment is The Dark Knight Rises teaser poster and Matt’s take on Netflix’s announced price increase. Hit the jump for brief recaps and links to each.

David Koechner On Set Interview FINAL DESTINATION 5

David Koechner On Set Interview FINAL DESTINATION 5 slice

No matter who you are, when you’re cast in a Final Destination movie, you know you’re going to die.  So when I participated in a group interview on the set of Final Destination 5 last year in Vancouver, we eventually asked David Koechner if he had any input into how he’d be killed.  He told us:

“They’re all so specific on how the deaths come about. They’re all so wonderfully laid out, that Rube Goldberg construction. They’re beautiful chess pieces that move in the right place. In this picture, they all either have something to do with the person physically, or something to do with their personality. It’s really a lot of fun.”

I’d expect nothing less in a Final Destination movie.  During the interview, Koechner also talked about working with the 3D cameras, the development of his character, what it’s like to work on a horror movie versus other genres, are there any similarities between working on this and Hannah Montana, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to check out what he had to say.

New Trailer for FINAL DESTINATION 5

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: July 7th, 2011 at 12:11 pm

final-destination-5-movie-image-slice-01

The new trailer for Final Destination 5 has gone online and as always, every thing can be boiled down to “Go to mundane location, bad things happen.”  The Final Destination franchise preys on our fears that we could die from a freak accident at any time.  I would love to see the Final Destination film where someone escapes the big accident at the beginning and then instead of the reaper getting him or her with a Rube Goldberg project of death, the person just dies from a long, protracted illness.  At least this one kind of raises an interesting moral quandary about whether or not you would kill an innocent person if it ensured your own survival.  And really, what would a Final Destination movie be without an arbitrary new rule that was never mentioned in the previous entries?

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Final Destination 5 opens in 3D on August 12th.

PIRANHA 3DD Stunt Casting Continues as David Hasselhoff Joins the Cast

Piranha 3DD clearly has no desire to be considered a real movie and if attempting to top their previously-announced stunt casting of Gary Busey by hiring David Hasselhoff.  Unfortunately, nothing beats Busey.  The new film takes place at a water park so perhaps Hasselhoff will be playing a lifeguard.  You know, because he was a lifeguard on Baywatch.  So clever, Piranha 3DD.

The film also stars Ving Rhames, Christopher Lloyd, Paul Scheer, Katrina Bowden, Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, Chris Zylka, and David Koechner.  Piranha 3DD opens in 3D on November 23rd.

First Trailer and Poster for FINAL DESTINATION 5

The first trailer and poster for Final Destination 5 have gone online.  This time the big disaster is on a suspension bridge.  As always, those who don’t have the courtesy to die in giant disasters get hunted down by the grim reaper and eliminated in gruesome, Rube Goldberg-projects of doom.  In a hint that the series may be running out of creative ways to off its characters, Final Destination 5 preys on our fears of LASIK and acupuncture.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster.  Final Destination 5 stars Emma Bell, Nick D’Agosto, Miles Fisher, Arlen Escarpeta, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, P.J. Byrne, Ellen Wroe, Courtney B. Vance, David Koechner, and Tony Todd.  The film opens in 3D on August 26th.

Gary Busey Joins PIRANHA 3DD

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 27th, 2011 at 1:13 pm

gary-busey-piranha-3d-slice-01

Gary Busey, currently known for the best set of crazy eyes this side of Michelle Bachmann, has joined the cast of Piranha 3DD.  The press release describes Busey’s role as “potential fish bait”, but no matter his character, I seriously doubt he’ll be asked to give a performance equal to his Oscar-nominated turn as Buddy Holly in The Buddy Holly Story.  That’s right: Gary Busey was a serious actor at one point and not just a walking punchline.  But since Piranha 3DD is tongue-in-cheek (before angry fish devour your tongue and cheek), I don’t think that should be a problem.  Hopefully, the resurgence of Busey will lead to Comedy Central finally releasing the short-lived series I’m With Busey on to DVD.

Piranha 3DD also stars Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, Chris Zylka, David Koechner, and Meagan Tandy.  The film is due out in 3D on November 23rd.

Sony Pictures and Samuel Goldwyn Films have picked up the distribution rights to A Good Old Fashioned Orgy.  According to Variety, the story–co-directed by Pete Huyck and Alex Gregory (Frasier)–centers on “a group of 30-somethings who spend every summer weekend throwing elaborate theme parties and eventually throw one final bash – an orgy.”  The comedy will star Saturday Night Live‘s Jason Sudeikis who’s poised to have a breakout year.  He’ll next be seen in theater in the comedy Hall Pass and again later this year alongside Jason Bateman and Charlie Day in Horrible Bosses.  Sony and Goldwyn plan to release Orgy in late summer.

According to THR, the film has an outstanding cast that not only includes Sudeikis, but also Tyler Labine, Leslie Bibb, Will Forte, Lucy Punch, Lake Bell, Michelle Borth, Martin Starr, Nick Kroll, Lindsay Sloaneand, and David Koechner.

There are two kinds of people in this world: people who are fans of Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and people who aren’t. Either you totally get someone’s “Milk was a bad choice” tattoo or you blankly stare at the 2004 film starring Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Christina Applegate. Those who are fans probably already own the DVD, have probably burned it out and only need to know one thing about the Blu-ray. Buy or not to buy? Well, the answer is buy. There’s plenty of new stuff to warrant a hilarious upgrade. Hit the jump for details.

David Koechner, P.J. Byrne, and Tony Todd Confirmed for FINAL DESTINATION 5

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: August 30th, 2010 at 9:16 pm

Last week, we caught wind of some casting news from the production of Final Destination 5: Nicholas D’Agosto (Fired Up!), Ellen Wroe (Huge), and Meghan Ory (Dark House) joined Miles Fisher (Superhero Movie) and Arlen Escarpeta (Friday the 13th) in the young cast, and Warner Bros. reportedly had an offer to David Koechner (Extract) for a role.

Apparently Koechner like what he saw, because Heat Vision reports the funnyman has officially signed on along with P.J. Byrne (Dinner for Schmucks) to the sequel.  Fans of the series should be happy to hear that Tony Todd is likewise on board to reprise his franchise role as Mr. Bludworth.  This is director Steven Quale’s feature debut — fresh off his work heading up the second unit on Avatar — with a script by Eric Heisserer (A Nightmare on Elm Street). Final Destination 5 opens on August 26, 2011.

Nicholas D’Agosto (Fired Up!), Ellen Wroe (Huge), and Meghan Ory (Dark House) have joined the cast of young actors who will perish in horribly fantastic ways in Final Destination 5. Miles Fisher (Superhero Movie) and Arlen Escarpeta (Friday the 13th) are likewise official members of the cast, while Bloody Disgusting reports Warner Bros. has made an offer to funnyman David Koechner (Extract) for a role.

This is director Steven Quale’s feature debut — fresh off his work heading up the second unit on Avatar — with a script by Eric Heisserer (A Nightmare on Elm Street).  I’ve had D’Agosto filed under “Charmer” in the back of my mind ever since Rocket Science, so I may just have to see Final Destination 5 when it hits theaters August 26, 2011.
