Fresh off last night’s incredibly tantalizing trailer, a new interview with the creatives behind this summer’s Man of Steel has landed online.  Getting a new version of Superman off the ground was no small task, but screenwriter David S. Goyer and producer Christopher Nolan came up with an interesting take on the character that hadn’t been seen before and enlisted director Zack Snyder to bring the film to fruition.  We’re now less than a month away from Man of Steel’s release, and the trio has taken the opportunity to discuss the film and it’s development.  Hit the jump to see what Nolan, Goyer, and Snyder had to say about Man of Steel, including making a wholly sci-fi Superman movie, why Snyder was the right man for the director’s chair, and more.

It appears that Starz is happy with the numbers and vision for executive producer David S. Goyer’s new drama series Da Vinci’s Demons.  The network announced today that it has greenlit production of a second season of the show, with filming poised to get underway in Wales next month.  The series premiere set records for the network, nabbing 2.14 million total viewers.  The show stars Tom Riley and centers on the titular artist/inventor/swordsman/idealist living in Renaissance Florence, struggling to exist within the confines of his own reality and time as he begins to not only see the future, but invent it.  Season two is expected to air on Starz in 2014.  If you missed Steve’s extended interview with Goyer about the show, including the producer’s thoughts on a second season, click here.

Something about Da Vinci’s Demons, a new 8-part Starz miniseries, felt very familiar as I was watching its first two episodes.  The handsome, fit young man, the flowing blouse (chest always exposed), the leather “tunic” that really just looks like a regular modern leather jacket, a portrait of a genius as a young, lusty rogue — yes, I’ve got it: it’s Shakespeare In LoveTom Riley, as Leonardo da Vinci, is particularly reminiscent of Joseph Fiennes in his portrayal of a young and lusty William Shakespeare, and it’s neither a wholly good or wholly bad thing.  Hit the jump for my preview of this upcoming drama (which is worth a watch) and why, as it says, “history is a lie.”

Premiering tonight on Starz is David S. Goyer‘s Da Vinci’s Demons.   The show stars Tom Riley as the artist/inventor/swordsman/idealist living in Renaissance Florence, struggling to exist within the confines of his own reality and time as he begins to not only see the future, but invent it.  I’ve seen the first four episodes and they’re really well done.  I definitely recommend tuning in later tonight.  For more on the show, watch this trailer.

Recently, I sat down with Goyer for an extended interview.  We talked about  how much of the show is based on actual facts, how important it is to balance storylines that resolve themselves within a season and those that carry on throughout multiple seasons, whether he knows the answers to the bigger story arcs, the portrayal of the Catholic Church (specifically the Pope), Bear McCreary‘s music, creating the show’s sets practically and shooting on location in castles, season 2, and more.  In addition, we talked about The Count of Monte Cristo, Godzilla, his thoughts on Man of Steel after watching a screening, whether he would be willing to do more Batman movies, and more.

David S. Goyer Talks His Involvement with GODZILLA and THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO

Coming off the success of The Dark Knight Trilogy and some highly positive buzz for this summer’s Man of Steel, screenwriter David S. Goyer is understandably a very busy guy.  Goyer is getting ready to launch his new TV series Da Vinci’s Demons on Starz, recently signed on to write and direct a new iteration of The Count of Monte Cristo, and also did some work on the script for Legendary’s new Godzilla film.  Steve recently spoke with Goyer in anticipation of the premiere of Da Vinci’s Demons, and the scribe clarified his involvement with Godzilla and also talked about the prospect of juggling a TV show and Count of Monte Cristo at the same time.  Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

David S. Goyer Talks Future BATMAN Movies and Whether He’d Consider Being Involved

Though director Christopher Nolan is more widely associated with the most recent feature film iteration of Batman given that he’s, well, the director, David S. Goyer was also intricately involved with bringing The Dark Knight Trilogy to the big screen as Nolan’s close collaborator.  Goyer and Nolan came up with the initial story for all three films and the two co-wrote the script for Batman Begins.  Nolan has put an end to his relationship with Batman with last year’s closing chapter The Dark Knight Rises, but Warner Bros. will obviously be bringing Batman back to the big screen sooner rather than later given that it’s a billion dollar franchise.

Steve recently sat down with Goyer in anticipation of the upcoming Starz series Da Vinci’s Demons, which Goyer created, wrote, and executive produced.  During the course of their conversation, Steve asked the scribe if he would consider working on a future Batman film should Warner Bros. seek his involvement.  Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

While this summer is loaded with huge movies like Iron Man 3Fast and Furious 6Pacific RimStar Trek Into DarknessWorld War ZWhite House Down, and so many others, the one at the top of my list is Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel.  Written by Davis S. Goyer and produced by Christopher Nolan, I really believe this is the Superman film we’ve been waiting for and everything I’ve seen and learned tells me it’s going to be one hell of a ride.  In addition, I’ve spoken to a few people that have seen the film and everyone is raving.  June 14th cannot arrive soon enough.

This morning I got to speak with Goyer for his new Starz show Da Vinci’s Demons, which premieres April 12.  While I’ll have the full interview online soon, I wanted to share what he said about Man of Steel today.  Since I knew going in he wouldn’t be able to say much about the movie, I asked how he got involved with the project and his reaction to seeing the finished film.  Hit the jump for more.

David S. Goyer to Direct THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO Remake

David S. Goyer, best known for his recent DC contributions as a screenwriter for The Dark Knight Trilogy and the upcoming Man of Steel, is now set to direct a remake of The Count of Monte Cristo.  In fact, the film is being pitched as a “19th Century Dark Knight” with a “graphic novel” approach to the script by Michael Robert Johnson (Sherlock Holmes), so make of that what you will.  The latest adaptation of the classic revenge tale by Alexandre Dumas will be made at Constantin Films with Impact Pictures’ Jeremy Bolt (Resident Evil) producing.  Hit the jump for more.

David S. Goyer Says He Wrote MAN OF STEEL “As If It Were Real,” Not a Lowly Comic Book Movie

David S. Goyer‘s resume is a mixed bag, ranging from a story credit on the stellar The Dark Knight to full authorial control as writer/director of the tepid The Unborn.  Goyer conceived the story for Man of Steel with Christopher Nolan and wrote the screenplay.  The latter fact may be cause for concern when Goyer says things like this:

“We’re approaching Superman as if it weren’t a comic book movie, as if it were real.”

That’s the kind of sound byte that makes Matt Goldberg want to punch things, but I will try to give Goyer the benefit of the doubt.  What I hope he meant is that he wants to take Superman’s world seriously, to ground a larger-than-life story in genuine human emotion.  The problem is what he actually said, distancing his serious work of art from the lowly comic book source material.  That’s silly: Superman is the most comical of comic book characters, a superhero with every strength and practically no vulnerability.  An accomplished screenwriter should be able to distinguish between treating the comic as a real world and the real world.  Of course, Goyer did elaborate, so hit the jump for the full context.

Warner Bros. Launches Awards Campaign for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

the dark knight rises batman bane

As we move closer towards awards season, studios are busy finalizing which of their films to push in which categories in order to give them the best shot at winning.  Given that the Best Picture snub for The Dark Knight in 2008 is widely considered a large reason why the Academy subsequently expanded the category to a larger number of nominees, we knew Warner Bros. would be launching a campaign for The Dark Knight Rises.  Alas, the “For Your Consideration” campaign for Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy closer is off and running, and we’ve got a look at which categories WB is pulling for.  Hit the jump for more.

Heavy-hitters David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight) and Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers) are teaming up for the doomsday-thriller, The Breach.  Adapted from the Patrick Lee novel by Justin Rhodes, The Breach follows Travis Chase, a former cop and ex-convict who stumbles across a crashed 747 and a mysterious artifact that will determine the fate of the future.  The screenplay is expected to divert from novel somewhat, but details are being kept under wraps.  Goyer has not signed on to direct the picture, but the possibility is there for him.  Hit the jump for more.

Warner Bros. has confirmed that director Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel will be released in 2D, 3D and IMAX versions next summer.  We previously reported that Man of Steel would be post-converted to 3D as well as the promise of “An IMAX 3D Experience,” but those reports were retracted when IMAX claimed the announcement was an “inputting error” and that WB was still contemplating a 3D post-conversion.  In the new press release, Snyder was quick to assuage fears of sub-par post-conversion by stating that the film was designed and shot with 3D in mind, but not at the expense of story and character.

Written by David S. Goyer (who was recently interviewed by Steve), Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Amy Adams and Michael Shannon.  Look for the film in 2D, 3D and IMAX on June 14th, 2013.  Hit the jump for the full press release.

The first trailer is now available for Da Vinci’s Demons, a Starz series from writer David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Man of Steel).  No historical documentary, Da Vinci’s Demons stars Tom Riley (I Want Candy) as the title character, a twenty-five year old artist/inventor/swordsman/idealist living in Renaissance Florence.  How fantastic is it that an iconic scientist is finally getting a badass heroic treatment?  For more on Da Vinci’s Demons, be sure to check out Steve’s recent interview with Goyer, who is the showrunner for the series.

Also starring Laura Haddock (Captain America: The First Avenger) and Lara Pulver (Sherlock), Da Vinci’s Demons will air its eight-episode first season on Starz in the spring of 2013.  Hit the jump to see the first trailer and full press release for Starz’ Da Vinci’s Demons.

Universal Pictures has acquired the sci-fi comedy script, Subdivision, from writers Morgan Jurgenson (Tucker and Dale vs Evil) and Alex Ankeles.  Attached to produce is Justin Lin, who is currently filming The Fast and the Furious 6.  Interestingly, Lin may also  develop the project as a potential directing vehicle.  The logline for Subdivision is under lock and key at the moment.  The picture comes as another win for the writing team of Jurgenson and Ankeles, who previously sold their spec script Hyperdrive to Paramount.  For a list of other projects Lin is involved with, and a look at another recent sci-fi script pick-up, hit the jump.

Premiering on Starz in the first half of 2013 is David S. Goyer‘s Da Vinci’s Demons.   Starring Tom Riley (as Leonardo Da Vinci), Laura Haddock and Lara Pulver, the show is a “historical fantasy, following the ‘untold’ story of the world’s greatest genius during his turbulent youth in Renaissance.”

At this year’s New York Comic-Con, I was able to talk with Goyer before his panel.  During both a roundtable and exclusive interview he talked about how he got attached to the project, how Da Vinci’s Demons could never air on network TV, the exciting visuals for the show, the fact that he “shamelessly pillaged the crews of Luther, Sherlock and Game of Thrones,” getting Bear McCreary to do the score, and more.  In addition, I also asked when we might see the next trailer for Man of Steel (which he wrote), the difference between working on cable and network TV and why he became frustrated with Flash Forward, and he set the record straight regarding whether there were a lot of deleted scenes from The Dark Knight Rises.  Hit the jump for more.
