In case you were somehow confused by the recent set photos Vin Diesel has been sending out, Universal Pictures has announced that principal photography has officially begun on Riddick. The press release provides an updated synopsis and casting info. We knew that Diesel would be joined by Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff, and Jordi Molla, but now Bokeem Woodbine and David Bautista have been confirmed as cast members. The film also stars Matt Nable, Conrad Pla, Raoul Trujillo, Nolan Funk, and Keri Hilson.

Earlier today, at the TCA Winter Press Tour, Collider got the opportunity to sit down with actress Katee Sackhoff for an exclusive interview. While she was there to promote her new A&E western crime drama Longmire, which debuts this summer, we did also get the chance to ask her about the role she recently signed on to play in the upcoming Riddick sequel with Vin Diesel, that is being directed by David Twohy.
Sackhoff talked about having grown up watching science fiction and action, what a huge fan she is of the first two movies, how excited she is “to go blow some shit up,” her crazy (and I mean crazy!) audition story, and how she’s already packed on nine pounds of muscle in training, in an attempt to compete with her co-star. Check out what she had to say after the jump.

While you probably know her as Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica, Katee Sackhoff will soon have a new sci-fi franchise to add to her repertoire. We previously reported that Sackhoff was being considered for a role opposite Vin Diesel in the upcoming sci-fi flick, Riddick. It now looks as if she’s a lock as Sackhoff is reported to be in final negotiations for the role. She’ll be playing Dahl, a Nordic mercenary tasked with tracking down the titular anti-hero. Also playing the mercenary game is Jordi Molla (Blow) who will play Santana, a leader of an eight-man crew bent on killing Riddick. Things are not looking up for our favorite Furyan.
The third installment of the franchise that started with Pitch Black and staggered with The Chronicles of Riddick was once again written and directed by David Twohy; it also stars Karl Urban reprising his role as Lord Vaako. Hit the jump for more on Riddick.

Alcon Entertainment has acquired writer/director David Twohy’s script for the action thriller The Leonardo Job. Per the press release, Twohy is also attached to direct the pic for Alcon which will finance and produce the film. Perhaps best known for his work on the Riddick franchise, Twohy has written and directed both Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick and is looking to begin production soon enough on the as of yet untitled third installment. There is no word on when The Leonardo Job is looking to begin production and/or whether or not it will affect production on the third Riddick.
According to the press release, The Leonardo Job will center on two rival thieves who are hired to track down da Vinci’s “The Battle of Anghiari” painting. As the story goes, the two are eventually forced to work together upon discovering that they aren’t the only ones eyeing the work. Vin Diesel, who does it all for the fans, has released some concept art from Riddick 3. Recently, Diesel pretended to hem and haw over whether or not he should take a pay cut for a film he’s supposedly been passionate it about for years, but it looks like the project is moving forward with shooting likely to begin this September. As a birthday present for Diesel, Riddick director David Twohy sent along some concept art for the film and Diesel has now shared the concept art on his Facebook page. The way the image is drawn, it looks like Riddick destroyed a planet and half a mountain with a knife. He apparently also has a new pet.

Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick are among the many Vin Diesel movies I’ve never seen, but I respect the fondness for the character among fans. Diesel has spoken in the past about a possible sequel, which may be coming sooner than expected. Diesel has spoken with writer/director David Twohy about Riddick, and it could film as early as this summer with an R rating and everything. One caveat:
“[Twohy] just landed in New York with the good news. We can start filming this summer. However, there is a catch… in order for us to make a true R rated film, I must work for scale upfront.”

Geez, what can’t Madea do? It looks like Tyler Perry has landed the role of Alex Cross in the adaptation of the James Patterson book I, Alex Cross. The novel finds Cross investigating the death of his pregnant wife. The role was previously played onscreen by Morgan Freeman in two other Patterson adaptations: 1997’s Kiss the Girls and 2001’s Along Came a Spider. Actor Idris Elba was originally chosen to star in the reboot of the Alex Cross franchise with David Twohy (The Chronicles of Riddick) directing, but it appears that the project has undergone a bit of an overhaul. Variety reports that Rob Cohen (xXx) will direct, with Madea—er—Perry signed on for a trilogy of films. I know it’s early, but I think this film takes the cake as the strangest project to take shape in 2011 so far. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

It’s been awhile since we’ve received much information in regards to the much-anticipated third Chronicles of Riddick film, simply entitled Riddick. Back in May, we brought you some concept art as well as a potential synopsis for the film. However, since then, it’s been all quiet along the Riddick front. With that in mind, for those of you who are starving for some info on the film, we have an update from Vin Diesel. Via Facebook, Diesel posted this message:
“So the director of Riddick, my partner on COR since the beginning, DT… has a new challenge in store. He wants me to have 3 different body looks for this next chapter…
There is the DiNorscio type, the Dom type, and the lean Furyan type… but all in the same movie, haha…
When it comes to art, we all like a challenge.”
To partake in a little discussion as to the meaning of this message, hit the jump. Diesel can next be seen in Fast Five which hits theaters on April 29th, 2011.

Idris Elba has signed on to star in Cross, the latest installment based on James Patterson’s series of novels centered around the adventures of forensic psychologist Dr. Alex Cross. The character was previously played on screen by Morgan Freeman in 1997′s Kiss the Girls and 2001′s Along Came A Spider. According to Deadline, David Twohy (The Chronicles of Riddick) will direct — he is currently doing a rewrite on Kerry Williamson’s script.
Elba will next be seen on the big screen in the heist film Takers starting August 27th; on the small screen, Elba stars as the titular character at the center UK-based Luther, and lend his services to the cancer comedy The Big C in a multi-episode arc. Hit the jump for a synopsis of Cross.

A presentation from the highly-anticipated Riddick was recently shown to potential buyers and someone has posted it online. It’s a ten-minute video but the promo stuff starts in at about 5:30. Everything before is a brief introduction by Vin Diesel followed by quick trailer of all the previous Riddick work, including the video games, cut together. It looks like the title they’ve settled on (at least for now) is “Riddick” which is so much better than the previously-rumored title, “The Chronicles of Riddick: Dead Man Stalking”.
Writer-director David Twohy begins talking about the film at around 5:30 and he shows off some very cool concept art and talks about the film. There’s even a shot of the synopsis. But looking at the concept art, it looks like Twohy describes it: “visceral” and “R-rated”. Riddick fans should definitely check this out and even if you were left cold by The Chronicles of Riddick, this presentation may make you a believer again. Hit the jump to check out the presentation. The film is currently set to hit theaters in 2011.

Lots of new details have come to light regarding David Twohy’s third Riddick movie with the worst detail being the title: The Chronicles of Riddick: Dead Man Stalking. If you’re thinking about making your title a pun: don’t. Thankfully, that’s the worst-sounding part of the new film. Corona Coming Attractions has read the script for the new film and learned that we’re going back to meaner, leaner Richard B. Riddick (Vin Diesel). The character has given up the Necromonger crown, shrugged off the shackles of civilization, and returned to his home planet of Furya. The only problem is that now he’s being stalked by deadly creatures and deadly mercenaries.

In an article detailing the sale of the recently-announced and long-awaited third installment in Vin Diesel and David Twohy’s Riddick series, THR has revealed a few new details on the project. Here’s what they have to say:
Though billed as a back-to-basics approach to the character popularized by Diesel, the script features the character — the most wanted man in the galaxy — left for dead on a barren alien planet, dealing with “trisons” (three-legged bisons) and “mud demons.” He must then contend with two squads of bounty hunters, one of which ride rockets called jetcycles.
Riddick versus monsters and bounty hunters is definitely the basics and removed from the silly necromonger-plot of the second film. I don’t need prison planets or sun planets or planets of the dead. I need a bad-ass anti-hero and that’s why my favorite moment in The Chronicles of Riddick is “I’m going to kill you with my teacup.”

It turns out that Vin Diesel is no longer full of shit. After many years of what seemed like manufactured buzz from the actor to keep his fans interested, Variety now reports that Diesel and writer/director David Twohy will finally make the third installment in the Chronicles of Riddick franchise. Diesel has continued to keep hope alive in a sequel ever since the cliffhanger ending of 2003′s The Chronicles of Riddick. Despite the lackluster box office of part two, the film did manage to gross $116 million worldwide and spawn two successful videogames (Escape from Butcher Bay and Assault on Dark Athena) Universal has decided to finally give the greenlight to telling the next chapter in the tale of the eye-shinin’ anti-hero.
Hit the jump for details on the project and speculation on why it’s finally come to life.
Writer/Director David Twohy sure knows his way around a high concept. His previous directorial efforts Pitch Black, and the Darren Aronofsky scripted, Below demonstrate him to be a master of creating tension in small spaces. The man knows how to develop unconventional characters and wring every ounce of tension out of a situation. Of course, when he is given a bigger palette the results are more mixed. Sometimes you get The Arrival, sometimes you get Chronicles of Riddick.
His latest film, A Perfect Getaway falls into the latter category. Fortunately it is also his most satisfying entry into the more-than-one-primary-location genre of filmmaking, at least until the final 20 minutes. More after the jump:
The problem with the thriller is that formalists like Brian De Palma and Bryan Singer have spoiled them for normal people and critics. We expect our genre entries to confound us, or at the very east to be deconstructions of the genre. Forget dramatic irony, we want expert sequences, and tension to abound. And so David Twohy deserves some credit for what he attempts in A Perfect Getaway. He is aware of genre constructs and addresses them, but he does so in such a way that when he removes the tablecloth and the plates are still standing, no one’s so much impressed as ready for the third act. My review of A Perfect Getaway after the jump, jump (please continue).
