Holly Hunter, David Wenham and Peter Mullan Joining TOP OF THE LAKE Mini-Series

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: November 7th, 2011 at 2:51 pm

Just last week word came that Mad Men star Elisabeth Moss would lead the BBC miniseries Top of the Lake from writer Jane Campion, director Garth David and The King’s Speech producers Emile Sherman and Iain Canning. Now Deadline has word that Holly Hunter (who worked with Campion on The Piano), David Wenham (Faramir from Lord of the Rings) and Peter Mullan (War Horse) have joined the production telling the story of Robin Griffin (Moss), a detective investigating the disappearance of a 12-year-old pregnant girl, who is the daughter of a local drug lord. Mullan will play Matt Mitcham, the missing pregnant woman’s father and local drug lord while Hunter will play G.J., a guru at a local women’s camp. Wenham’s role has not yet been revealed, but it’d be nice to see him in a villainous role this time around just to mix things up a bit. Also, as was speculated in our initial report, Sundance Channel has closed a deal to distribute the miniseries here in the United States, so if all goes well when the shoot begins in New Zealand in February, we should see some Emmy love for the miniseries when the time comes.

New Trailer for ORANGES AND SUNSHINE Starring Emily Watson and Hugo Weaving

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: September 15th, 2011 at 1:22 pm

A new trailer for the drama Oranges and Sunshine has been released. The film is one of those “too disturbing to be true” tales that tells the real-life story of one social worker’s quest to uncover a hidden scandal on a massive scale, as she discovers that forced migration of children from the United Kingdom to Australia had occurred as recently as the 1950’s and 60’s. The trailer is quite intriguing, and I was wholeheartedly involved until the heavy-handed narration took over, making it seem more like a Lifetime or direct-to-DVD movie than an actual feature. Nevertheless, the story is crazy and I’m interested enough to check it out.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film stars Emily Watson, Hugo Weaving, and David Wenham. Oranges and Sunshine opens in select theaters October 21st.

Zack Snyder. A CG animated owl movie. Holy crap, did that actually happen? Yes it did, it’s that movie with the terrible name Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole. It’s based on a kid’s book, but still. The story of a young owl named Soren (voiced by Jim Sturgess) who’s stolen with his siblings to be a slave for the “Pure Ones” headed by Metalbeak (Joel Edgerton) and his wife Nyra (Helen Mirren), but Soren’s destined to be a great owl, and perhaps savior. Abbie Cornish, Sam Neill, Geoffrey Rush, Richard Roxburgh, Hugo Weaving, and David Wenham are also feature voice performers. The review of Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Jim Sturgess, Director Zack Snyder and Producer Deborah Snyder Interview LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS: THE OWLS OF GA’HOOLE

by Christina Radish    Posted: September 24th, 2010 at 7:45 am

Acclaimed filmmaker Zack Snyder makes his animation debut with the fantasy adventure Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, which follows a young owl named Soren (voiced by Jim Sturgess), who is enthralled by his father’s epic stories of the Guardians of Ga’Hoole, a mythic band of winged warriors that once fought a great battle to save all of owlkind from the evil Pure Ones.

Based on the beloved and popular books by Kathryn Lasky, Legend is a story that shows the importance of following one’s dreams, in order to make them real, and is brought to life by a stellar cast of actors voicing the owls, including Helen Mirren, Geoffrey Rush, Sam Neill, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Ryan Kwanten, David Wenham and Anthony LaPaglia.

During a press conference for the film, director Zack Snyder, executive producer Deborah Snyder and actor Jim Sturgess, who voices the heroic young Soren, talked about making this epic, visually stunning animated feature. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

Opening next weekend is director Zack Snyder’s Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls Of Ga’Hoole. Based on the Guardians of Ga’Hoole books by Kathryn Lasky, everything I’ve seen from the film leads me to believe this is going to be a special movie and something that’s going to surprise audiences.  If you haven’t seen the awesome trailer, you should start there.  Based on the trailer and getting to see five sequences from the film at a recent WB press event, Legend of the Guardians looks like Lord of the Rings with owls.  This is a good thing.  Anyway, with the film getting ready to hit theaters, I’ve been given seven clips from the film and over 40 images.  Hit the jump to check everything out.

New LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS: THE OWLS OF GA’HOOLE UK Quad Poster

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: August 12th, 2010 at 8:27 am

While there are a lot of movies arriving later this year, one of the ones I’m most excited to see is director Zack Snyder’s Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls Of Ga’Hoole. Anyway, Warner Bros. in the UK have released a new quad poster and you can check it out after the jump.  It’s like a previous poster only wider.  Legend of the Guardians gets released September 24 and in the UK on October 22.

New Poster for Zack Snyder’s LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS: THE OWLS OF GA’HOOLE

Warner Bros. has released a new poster for Zack Snyder’s animated 3D fantasy-adventure film Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole. Since we’ve covered the movie extensively the last few months, you probably know how excited I am to see the finished product as the few sequences I saw a week ago were incredible.  The best way I can describe the movie is it’s Lord of the Rings with Owls.  This is a good thing.  Also, as you probably noticed when you saw the incredible trailer, every frame looks like a painting come to life.  I really haven’t been this excited for an animated movie in a long time.  Hit the jump to check out the poster, and click here to check out the eight character posters from a few weeks back.

Warner Bros. Screens Footage of Zack Snyder’s LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS: THE OWLS OF GA’HOOLE – Plus Images of the Gift Bag

by Jason Barr    Posted: July 15th, 2010 at 10:56 pm

Tonight, Warner Brothers and director Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300) welcomed members of the press to the studio’s lot for a screening of new footage from Snyder’s first animated film, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole which features the voices of Emily Barclay, Abbie Cornish, Ryan Kwanten, Anthony LaPaglia, Miriam Margolyes, Helen Mirren, Sam Neill, Geoffrey Rush, Jim Sturgess, Hugo Weaving, Richard Roxburgh, and David Wenham. For those new to the program, the film is based upon “Guardians of Ga’Hoole,” the series of children’s fantasy books written by author Kathryn Lasky. The story revolves around brothers Soren (Sturgess) and Kludd (Kwanten) as the two take opposite paths when a fall from their treetop home results in their being captured by a collection of evil owls known as the Pure Ones.

In case you’re not completely sold on an animated owl adventure from the ultra-stylized Snyder, I might suggest easing your inhibitions. To be concise, the footage of the film screened tonight looked incredible. That said, for a general breakdown of the footage shown tonight, hit the jump. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole opens in beautiful 3D (no sales pitch here, it truly is incredible to look at) on September 24th.

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for Zack Snyder’s Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole and I think it looks amazing.  What’s great about the movie is how every frame looks like a painting and I think  this is going to be something special in 3D.  What I also love about the trailer is how it looks like Zack Snyder took his style and vision and applied it perfectly to an animated film.  Watch the trailer for yourself and tell me it doesn’t look awesome.

Behind the Scenes Clip/Featurette from LEGENDS OF THE GUARDIANS

Warner Bros. has released a new featurette/behind the scenes clip from Zack Snyder’s Legends of the Guardians.  The clip features Zack and Debbie Snyder (his wife and producer of the film) talking about the story, the different owls in the movie, and the clip also incorporates new footage not seen in the trailer.

While some might not be excited for Zack Snyder’s first foray into animation, I’ve probably watched the trailer a dozen times and cannot wait to see the movie.  I think almost every frame looks like a painting come to life and I even love the use of the song Kings and Queens from 30 Seconds to Mars. First Trailer for Zak Snyder’s LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS

by Germain Lussier    Posted: March 4th, 2010 at 4:18 pm

The trailer for Zack Snyder’s latest, Legend of the Guardians, is now online thanks to Yahoo Movies.  It’s an animated film from the people behind Happy Feet and is based on the Guardians of Ga’Hoole children’s novels. The title was just (thankfully) changed from that and this trailer will be attached to prints of Alice in Wonderland. It was also just announced that this, along with Snyder’s follow up Sucker Punch, will be released in 3D.

Personally, I’m loving the artistry of this trailer.  The music gives it a very Where The Wild Things Are feel and the look closely resembles 300, if 300 stared a bunch of CG owls.  Making Legend of the Guardians seem even more epic is the insane voice cast.  There’s Sam Neill, Hugo Weaving, Emilie de Ravin, Jim Sturgess, Geoffrey Rush, Helen Mirren, Abbie Cornish, David Wenham and many more.

The film will be released in prime 2011 Best Animated Feature Oscar consideration time on September 24, 2010. After the jump, check out the trailer itself, still photos and the official plot synopsis.

Halloween brings out the ghosts, ghouls and reissues of Haloween favorites and “favorites.” Universal, one of the great studios for catalog Blu-ray releases has put out two cult-classics, and one film that might strain to be some day. 300: The Complete Experience Blu-ray Review

We’re now in a different place with Zack Snyder. He’s directed three films, all on Blu-ray, and I have watched and reviewed all three for Collider. The most honest statement I can make is that Snyder is an amazing visual talent, who knows what the fuck he’s doing behind a camera. But after three films, I don’t know what’s going on inside his head. Sure, his first film was smartly hella commercial, and 300 was a blockbuster, but is also inherently a shallow but engaging visual spectacle. Watchmen is a great dense tome of a film, but much of its greatness belongs to the graphic novel. He has done little that can guess what he really has going on upstairs. There is great technique, but the voice is undefined. My review after the jump:

Johnny Depp Interview PUBLIC ENEMIES

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: July 1st, 2009 at 10:32 am

public_enemies_slice_johnny_depp_01.jpg

Opening today is director Michael Mann’s “Public Enemies”. The film is set during the Depression-era’s great crime wave and it’s the story of the government’s attempt to stop legendary criminals John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. This operation transformed the FBI into the first federal police force. By now you’ve seen the trailers and commercials, so you know the cast is filled with famous faces like Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard, Channing Tatum and David Wenham.

Anyway, to help promote the film, our partners at Omelete sent me to cover the international press day and I was able to participate in a small press conference with Johnny Depp. During the interview, Johnny talked about making “Public Enemies”, all his upcoming films like “Alice in Wonderland” and “Dark Shadows”, and a lot more. Since he doesn’t do a lot of press, if you’re a fan, you’ll love the interview. Read or listen to it after the jump:
