In the family comedy Hop, actor James Marsden plays Fred, a 30-year-old on a directionless path, who is trying to pull his life together. His family keeps telling him to grow up, but Fred knows that he is destined for something great. Then, he meets E.B. (voiced by Russell Brand), the teenage son of the Easter Bunny who also happens to be next in line for the coveted position, but who wants to give it all up in pursuit of his dream to become a drummer. The presence of E.B. brings back memories from when Fred was a little boy and saw E.B.’s dad delivering his Easter basket early one morning, and he soon realizes that his calling just might be the thing that E.B. is running from.
At the film’s press day, James Marsden talked about acting opposite a bunny that wasn’t there, developing the dynamic and chemistry with Russell Brand that was necessary to bring their performances to life, the fact that he is a bit of a perpetual child like Fred, and that the film shows the importance of following your dream and finding your passion in life, even if that’s becoming the Easter Bunny. The evolution of Mathew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass has epic dimensions – even for a superhero flick. With such a legendary build-up, perhaps it’s little wonder that the film’s actual debut would fail to match expectations. Kick-Ass launched in 3,065 theatres on Friday and brought in an estimated $7.5 million. That was enough to claim number one at Friday’s box office, but not quite enough to get the R-rated action-comedy to the $30 million weekend figure that Lionsgate was hoping for. Three day projections should, realistically, bring the ass-kicking to the $20 million range. That’s more than fellow newcomer Death at a Funeral, at any rate. The comedy brought in an estimated $5.5 million from 2,459 engagements and is looking at a weekend total of about $17 million. Meanwhile, after relinquishing weekend bragging rights to Clash of the Titans on Monday, Date Night looks strong entering its second weekend. The comedy lost just 40% of last Friday’s total and is running even with Funeral for second place. Full weekend details tomorrow.
| Title | Friday | Total | |
| 1 | Kick-Ass | $7,500,000 | $7.5 |
| 2 | Death at a Funeral | $5,500,000 | $5.5 |
| 3 | Date Night | $5,500,000 | $37.4 |
| 4 | Clash of the Titans | $4,300,000 | $121.5 |
| 5 | How to Train Your Dragon | $4,200,000 | $142.8 |

Opening this Friday is director Neil LaBute’s Death at a Funeral, which stars Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence, Tracy Morgan, Zoë Saldaña, Columbus Short, Luke Wilson, Peter Dinklage, Danny Glover, Regina Hall, and Keith David. The movie is a remake of the 2007 British film with the same name, and while most remakes recast everyone, Peter Dinklage is playing the same character again. So if you’ve seen the 2007 film, you know who he plays and some of the twists and turns.
To help promote the movie, I got to sit down with Danny Glover and Regina Hall. Hit the jump to watch the interview:

I’ve always wondered if Tracy Morgan is playing himself on 30 Rock, or if it’s all an act. Also, I’ve seen Morgan on David Letterman and have always wondered if he’s pulling an Andy Kaufman with the way he acts…or if it’s really him. Based on the Los Angeles press junket for Death at a Funeral, I’m going to say it’s not an act.
The reason I can say that is while waiting in a hallway for my interview with Tracy Morgan and Luke Wilson, I got to hear Morgan saying some of the craziest things during other interviews. Most of them are not safe to print – let alone say on television. While we couldn’t hear everything behind the door, we heard enough that every journalist waiting and a few publicists were laughing a lot. Actually, I felt added pressure walking in to my interview, as I was hoping to get some wild and crazy answers. Hit the jump to see if I did….
Opening this weekend is director Neil LaBute’s Death at a Funeral, which stars Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence, Tracy Morgan, Zoë Saldaña, Columbus Short, Luke Wilson, Peter Dinklage, Danny Glover, Regina Hall, and Keith David. The movie is a remake of the 2007 British film with the same name. If you saw the previous version, the remake is the same story set in America.
To help promote the film, I recently got to speak with James Marsden. In the film, Marsden gets accidentally drugged and spends most of the film dealing with vivid hallucinations. While the film is a comedy, we talked about how he found the right balance for his performance. He also told me about some of his deleted scenes, and I asked him what’s up with Enchanted 2. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

The movie is a remake of the 2007 British film with the same name, and the project was led by Chris Rock, who explained why he wanted to remake the movie when I spoke to him yesterday. He also talked about the challenges of getting the cast together and he also told me about his next documentary Credit is the Devil – which he is starting to prep right now. In a few days ShoWest starts up in Las Vegas. If you haven’t heard of ShoWest, it’s a convention for theater owners and operators to see what’s new in their industry and be wined and dined by the Hollywood Studios. Basically, it’s Comic-Con for the people that make big decisions in the movie industry.
But the other reason ShoWest is cool is the studios send tons of movie posters and theater standees to the convention to pimp what they have coming. And while the convention doesn’t begin till Monday, a friend of the site was there tonight and was able to snap a number of photos of what’s already on display. So hit the jump for the posters for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Little Fockers, Get Low, Beastly, Charlie St. Cloud, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, a 75th Anniversary 20th Century Fox poster, Ramona and Beezus, Mercy, The A-Team, The Losers, Toy Story 3 and theater standees for Kick-Ass, Nightmare on Elm Street, Clash of the Titans, and a lot more!

Screen Gems has released synopses and some first look images from their 2010 films and it’s all after the jump. Some of the new/first look images are from The Roomate (starring Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly), Death at a Funeral (starring Peter Dinklage, Danny Glover, Martin Lawrence, James Marsden, Tracy Morgan, Chris Rock, Zoë Saldaña), and Takers (starring Matt Dillon, Paul Walker, Idris Elba, Jay Hernandez, and Hayden Christensen).
Also, while they didn’t release any images, they did provide the first synopsis for Burlesque which stars Cher, Christina Aguilera, Eric Dane, Cam Gigandet, Julianne Hough, Peter Gallagher, Alan Cumming, Kristen Bell and Stanley Tucci.
Check out everything after the jump. It’s posted by release date.

Neil LaBute’s (“In the Company of Men”, “Nurse Betty”) next project has been announced. The writer-director will once again be teaming up with producer William Horberg to adapt Charles Willeford’s crime novel “The Burnt Orange Heresy”. The duo recently worked together on the “Death at a Funeral” remake. You can read more about this project and why I think this might be a return to form for LaBute after the jump.
