Way back in 2010, Debra Granik teased out one of the most powerful performances for a female lead in recent cinematic history via Jennifer Lawrence in Winter’s Bone. Now it seems that she has set her sights even higher in attempting to bring “the strongest human being in the world” back to the big screen. In a recent interview, Granik divulged that she and producer/co-writer Anne Rosellini are developing a treatment for Pippi Longstocking.
To see what Granik had to say about the project, and for some background on the titular character, hit the jump.

The nominations for the 2011 Film Independent Spirit Awards have been announced. Here’s a quick breakdown of some interesting facts about the nominees. After winning the top prize at the Gotham Awards last night, Winter’s Bone leads the pack with seven nominations. And if you need more proof that the Best Actress race this year is crazy, it was the only category with a six nominees.
It’s also a good year for women filmmakers as Lisa Cholodenok (The Kids Are All Right) and Debra Granik (Winter’s Bone) pick up nominations for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. Nicole Holofcener also picked up a Best Screenplay nomination along with the Robert Altman Award for Please Give. Hit the jump for a full list of the nominees. The Film Independent Spirit Awards will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 10pm ET/PT on IFC.

One of the many movies premiering at Sundance is director Debra Granik’s (Down to the Bone) Winter’s Bone. The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Dale Dickey, Garret Dillahunt, Sheryl Lee, and Tate Taylor and it focuses on the dangerous efforts of an Ozard Mountain girl to track down her drug-dealer father while keeping her family intact. At least that’s what IMDb says about it.
While I never got the chance to see Granik’s last film (Down to the Bone), I’ve heard from people it’s great. Also, Vera Farmiga said during a recent interview that it’s her best work. Based on that, I’m planning on seeing Winter’s Bone when I’m at Sundance.
But if you’re not going to Park City, or you just want an early look at the film, hit the jump as we’ve been provided with seven clips. Also, I’ve posted a more detailed synopsis.

As we move closer to the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, we’re getting the first images of the films that will be playing there. The films we’ve included in this group Obselidia; Skateland starring the unbelievable hotness that is Ashley Greene; The Dry Land starring America Ferrera, Melissa Leo, and Wilmer Valderrama; The Imperialists Are Still Alive!; and Winter’s Bone starring Jennifer Lawrence and John Hawkes. We also have some more images for Nowhere Boy, the young John Lennon biopic starring Kristen Scott Thomas and Aaron Johnson. Hit the jump for images and synopses for all these films.
