The circus that is upfronts continues with ABC announcing a slew of cancellations, pick-ups and renewals. Via TV Line, the network has decided to cancel sci-fi series V, Matthew Perry’s sitcom Mr. Sunshine, the superhero family drama No Ordinary Family and the on-the-bubble drama Brothers and Sisters (after considering giving the show one more season, the network decided to free up their Sunday night slot and axe the show). Other cancellations at ABC include Off the Map, Detroit 187 and Better With You.
On a lighter note, freshman comedy Happy Endings and procedural drama Body of Proof were both renewed for a second season, and the Charlie’s Angels reboot has scored a pick-up. Other new series getting picked up include Tim Allen’s return Last Man Standing, controversial series Good Christian Belles (previously Good Christian Bitches), period soap Pan Am, Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal and the fairytale-themed Once Upon a Time from Lost vets Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. Damon Lindelof hinted via Twitter that the show is “gonna be special.”

The end has come for my string of on-set video interviews for ABC’s hit police drama Detroit 187. Leading up to the return of the show last week after a winter hiatus I premiered interviews with nearly every star in the show. We kicked things off with my trip report and interview with Erin Cummings, who graciously showed me a side of Detroit I wasn’t expecting. However, my positive feelings for Detroit wouldn’t have come about had Jason Richman not created the show. So, without further ado, hit the jump for the last of my video interviews with the cast and crew of Detroit 187 as I sit down with creator and lead writer, Jason Richman.

ABC’s Detroit 187 returned last week from a brief holiday break and with that comes the second to last of my on-set interviews. Tonight I have veteran actor James McDaniel (NYPD Blue), who stars as Sergeant Jesse Longford. The show itself is a police procedural drama with an infusion of humor and eye for the times; there’s even a running gag about cell phones. Detroit 187 is headlined by Michael Imperioli and McDaniel, and features a varied cast and intelligent writing. Hit the jump for my full interview with McDaniel and a bit more about his character.

As most of you have probably noticed, over the past week, we’ve posted a number of interviews with the cast of ABC’s hit police procedural drama Detroit 187 as I got to visit the set last month. What I like about the show is the humor that helps distance it from others in the same field, and the veteran cast and smart writing push it even further. Anyway, for today’s interview I’ve got Natalie Martinez, who plays Det. Ariana Sanchez. Hit the jump for the full video interview, including links to the previous ones from the past week:

ABC’s hit police drama Detroit 187 is set to return tomorrow, January 4th, from a brief holiday hiatus. Last week I started releasing my on-set video interviews with the cast and crew, and tonight is one of my favorite interviews of the bunch. That’s because I got to sit down with the talented Michael Imperioli to talk about the show, his writing, what side of the law he enjoys playing, and how he felt about Life on Mars getting the axe. He gave me thoughtful answers and a small rant about how much he dislikes cellphones. So hit the jump for my full video interview, time stamped for your convenience.

Detroit 187 is set to return on January 4th and last month I got to visit the Detroit set to do on-set interviews with the cast and crew. While police procedural dramas usually aren’t my thing, I really enjoy the sense of humor interwoven with the storylines of the detectives. Leading up to the return of the show I will have a new video interview with a cast or crew member, and today I have my sit-down with D.J. Cotrona, who plays Detective John Stone in the show, a cocky but effective detective recently promoted from VICE. Hit the jump to check out the full interview:

ABC’s Detroit 187 returns from a brief hiatus on January 4th with the 11th episode of the season. The police procedural drama has a nice balance of intensity and humor that helps separate it from other, more morose shows in that genre. Last month I got the opportunity to sit down with the cast and crew on set, and leading up to the return we will have a new interview for you each day. My first interview was with Erin Cummings, and now the second in the series is with newcomer Jon Michael Hill, who plays Michael Imperioli’s partner. Hit the jump for the full interview:

Police procedural dramas usually aren’t my thing. I generally don’t see the appeal of that genre, but ABC’s Detroit 187 caught me by surprise. The show has a levity to it that is earnest about its setting and the current age we live in. Jokes about cell phones or the difficulty in finding a specific gun shell at a high-traffic bridge lighten the mood and keep the stories interesting. Add a veteran cast, including The Sopranos star Michael Imperioli and NYPD Blue’s James McDaniel, mixed with relative newcomers, and give them interesting storylines to work off of and you have a nice lure. When I got the opportunity to fly out to Detroit and do on-set interviews with the cast and crew, I eagerly accepted. Over the next several days we will have a new video interview leading up to the return of Detroit 187 on January 4th. So hit the jump to check out a recap of the trip and my interview with the lovely Erin Cummings.

Over at ABC headquarters today, the network renewed V for a second season and cancelled freshman shows FlashForward and Romantically Challenged alongside veteran comedies Scrubs and Better Off Ted. ABC has plenty of material to fill those slots, though, as the network officially picked up comedies Mr. Sunshine, Better Together, Happy Endings and dramas The Whole Truth, Detroit 187 and My Generation for their fall schedule. More on each item after the jump.
