I’ve been running cold on Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, but Fox has now released a new red-band trailer for the film, and I’m starting to warm up to the flick.  While it looks like half of the movie will be speed-ramped, I can now make out the action on screen, and characters are actually talking to each other.  I’m also surprised at how bloody this looks, and I’m starting to wonder if Fox will release two R-rated blockbusters this summer (the other is Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus).  Keep in mind that director Timur Bekmambetov‘s previous film, Wanted, went out in the summer of 2008 with an R-rating and raked in $341 million worldwide, although having Angelina Jolie in your movie doesn’t hurt.

Hit the jump to check out the “Red-Band” (unrated would be a more accurate description) trailer.  The film stars Benjamin Walker, Dominic Cooper, Rufus Sewell, Anthony Mackie, and Mary Elizabeth WinsteadAbraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter opens in 3D on June 22nd.

It was announced today that Pierce Brosnan and Dominic Cooper have been set to star in the espionage action-thriller November Man.  The film is based on Bill Granger’s novel There Are No Spies and “tells the tale of an ex-CIA operative who is brought back in on a very personal mission and finds himself pitted against his former pupil in a deadly game involving high level CIA officials and the Russian president-elect.”  Production is set to begin in October in Berlin, with Roger Donaldson (The Bank Job) onboard to direct from a script by Michael Finch (Predators) and Karl Gajdusek (Tresspass).

Cooper has had a string of high profile roles as of late, as he starred as Howard Stark in last year’s Captain America: The First Avenger and turned heads with his stellar performance in The Devils Double.  He’ll be seen this summer in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.  Hit the jump to read the full press release regarding November Man.

After briefly flirting with the revenge thriller Motor City, actor Dominic Cooper is now set to join Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace in the actioner Dead Man Down.  The revenge tale stars Farrell as a mobster’s hitman bent on revenge and Rapace as “a mysterious, scarred beauty” who has intimate knowledge of Farrell’s past.  Variety reports that Cooper is in talks to play a family man who works as Farrell’s partner. Niels Arden Oplev, who directed Rapace in the Swedish iteration of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, is onboard to helm the pic with Neal Moritz (Fast and Furious franchise) producing.

Cooper earned notice for his starring turn in last year’s The Devil’s Double, and also appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger and My Week with Marilyn.  He’ll next be seen in the historical documentary Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which opens this summer. Production on Dead Man Down begins later this month.

Dominic Cooper was set to lead Albert Hughes‘ revenge thriller Motor City, but has dropped out due to a scheduling conflict.  Variety reports that Warner Bros. and production company Dark Castle are scrambling to find a new lead, and they are now in talks with Jake Gyllenhaal for the lead role.  If Gyllenhaal signs on, he would play “a felon who, after being released from prison, begins tracking down the men who framed him.”  Amber Heard will play the woman he loves, and Gary Oldman will play “a kingpin-type pulling the strings and who has his hooks into the woman.”  Filming is set to begin next month.

Gyllenhaal will next be seen in David Ayer‘s cop action-drama End of Watch co-starring Michael Peña, Anna Kendrick, Frank Grillo, and America Ferrera.  The film opens September 28th.

Teaser Trailer for ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER

The teaser trailer for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter has gone online.  The film re-imagines our 16th President as a statesman by day and a vampire slayer by night.  This trailer proves three things: 1) Johnny Cash‘s reading of Revelations 6:1 (from “The Man Comes Around”) can dignify just about anything; 2) Abraham Lincoln knew axe-fu; 3) Fox is selling this movie as totally serious.  Not a hint of a joke.  Also, the action goes by so fast, that you can’t really appreciate most of the moves or even tell what’s happening.  Ultimately, audiences will look at this teaser and think, “That’s not a real movie, right?”

The film stars Benjamin Walker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Anthony Mackie, Dominic Cooper, Alan Tudyk, Jimmi Simpson, and Rufus SewellAbraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter opens in 3D on June 22nd.

Dominic Cooper, Dan Stevens, and Ophelia Lovibond to Star in Period Drama SUMMER IN FEBRUARY

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 12th, 2011 at 9:45 am

A number of actors have signed on for the big screen adaptation of Summer in February. Based on the novel by Jonathan Smith, the story takes place at the Newlyn School of artists at the turn of the century and centers on the bohemian Lamorna Group. Billed as “a true tale of love, liberty and scandal,” THR reports that Dominic Cooper (Captain America: The First Avengers), Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey), Ophelia Lovibon (Mr. Popper’s Penguins), and Hattie Morahan (The Bank Job). Christopher Menaul, who helmed the U.K.’s Prime Suspect, is onboard to direct and Smith adapted his own book for the screen. Members of the Lamorna Group included painter Alfred Munnings and artists Harold and Laura Knight.

Cooper has had a big year, breaking out with the Sundance drama The Devil’s Double and going on to star in Captain America and My Week with Marilyn. He’ll next be seen in the feature film adaptation of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Production on Summer in February is set to begin in January.

THE DEVIL’S DOUBLE Blu-ray Review

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: December 2nd, 2011 at 8:39 am

What’s fascinating about The Devil’s Double is that Dominic Cooper gets to give two performances – often playing against each other – that are of such different pitches it’s as if the whole movie existed solely as an actor showcase. On one hand he’s playing Uday Hussein, the son of Saddam Hussein and a Caligula-in-training who likes having sex with schoolgirls and killing people. And then he’s also playing Latif Yahia, the man who looks enough like Uday to be hired (under protest) by Uday to be his body double. It’s Cooper’s movie and he nails it. The film itself (directed by Lee Tamahori) is a bit tired and formulaic, with interesting notes here and there, and a good whore with a heart of something performance by Ludivine Sagnier, but it’s hard not to walk away dazzled by its star but not the movie. Our review of the Blu-ray of The Devil’s Double follows after the jump.

MY WEEK WITH MARILYN Review

by Bill Graham    Posted: November 25th, 2011 at 8:16 am

Sometimes a memoir has to be taken with a grain of salt. In My Week With Marilyn, a retelling of a young man who has the time of his life on and off-set with Marilyn Monroe, things can become a bit eye-rolling. How much actually happened manages to be less important. What is essential is a small glimpse into something we may already know but remains heartbreaking nonetheless: Marilyn was an imperfect creature trying to keep from being swallowed alive by her fame. Despite not answering much of the whys and remaining mostly fluff, director Simon Curtis gives Michelle Williams the daunting task of playing Monroe near the peak of her popularity and she nails it. You can look at stills as much as you want, but the moving image allows Williams to blend into the role and become something audiences can fall in love with all over again. Amber Heard to Star in Revenge Thriller MOTOR CITY Opposite Dominic Cooper

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 21st, 2011 at 1:05 pm

Director Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli) has found his female lead for the thriller Motor City. Deadline reports that Amber Heard (The Rum Diary) has landed the female lead in the pic opposite Dominic Cooper. The film centers on a man who gets released from prison and sets out on a revenge mission to hunt down the people who framed him. There are currently no details on Heard’s role, but the actress has been gaining traction as of late starring in Drive Angry, NBC’s now-cancelled The Playboy Club, and most recently The Rum Diary with Johnny Depp.

Cooper recently starred in Captain America: The First Avenger and drew positive remarks for his performance in this year’s The Devil’s Double. He’ll next be seen in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Motor City was scripted by Chad St. John. The film will be Hughes’ first solo directorial effort, as he helmed his previous pics alongside brother Allen. Joel Silver is producing, and with the two leads set expect to hear more casting news soon.

Joel Kinnaman Confirmed as Lancelot in ARTHUR & LANCELOT; Harrington, Claflin, Cooper, Matheson, Sturgess, Walker, and Hemsworth Reading for Arthur

Last week, it was reported that Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) and Kit Harrington (Game of Thrones) were the frontrunners to star in Arthur & Lancelot, a reinvention of the Arthurian legend by writer/director David Dobkin (The Change-Up).  Heat Vision has now confirmed Warner Bros. signed Kinnaman to play Lancelot.  The next step is for Kinnaman to do chemistry reads with a number of young actors vying for the role of Arthur, including Harrington, Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides), Dominic Cooper (Captain America), Hans Matheson (Sherlock Holmes), Jim Sturgess (21), Liam Hemsworth (The Last Song), and Benjamin Walker (star of the upcoming Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter).  I really liked Kinnaman’s work in The Killing—there’s a great intensity to his screen presence.  Cooper is similar in that vein, but otherwise, the list suggests Dobkin’s Arthur is more boyish in contrast to Kinnaman as Sir Lancelot.

First Trailer for MY WEEK WITH MARILYN

The first trailer for My Week With Marilyn has gone online. Based on the memoirs of Lawrence Olivier’s assistant Colin Clark, the film details a week in the life of Marilyn Monroe as seen through the eyes of Clark. The trailer looks pretty great, and Michelle Williams looks to be going all out for the role of Monroe. It’s impressive to see her play the dichotomy of the public Marilyn and the private Marilyn, and Williams seems to be holding nothing back. I like the character-centric plot, and I’m interested to see where the overall arc of the film goes.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Kenneth Branagh, Dominic Cooper, Julia Ormond, Judi Dench, Emma Watson, and Eddie Redmayne. My Week With Marilyn opens on November 4th.

Dominic Cooper in Talks for MOTOR CITY

When Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli) signed on to direct, Motor City became a priority at Warner Bros.  The next step is to find the right star to play “a felon who, after being released from prison, begins tracking down the men who framed him.” It will be tricky to pull off, because the screenplay by Chad St. John that made the 2009 Black List is said to contain just a few lines of dialogue.  An early report suggested Chris Evans, Joel Edgerton, and Jeremy Renner were in contention.  All strong choices, but Variety adds another in more serious talks with the studio: Dominic Cooper.  Cooper shined a little less brightly than fellow candidate Evans in Captain America this summer, but that was just a paycheck compared to the showier vehicle Cooper had in The Devil’s Double.  Producer Joel Silver was reportedly so impressed with Cooper’s performance in a dual role in The Devil’s Double that he sought the actor out for Motor City.

The premise is instantly alluring, even if the latest draft isn’t quite so dialogue-free as it used to be.  I don’t know how to phrase this less awkwardly, but… Cooper has a really interesting face.  It’s the wide-set eyes.  Perfect for this kind of role, especially since he has the chops to back it up.

At Comic-Con, I had the great pleasure to sit down with Dominic Cooper one-on-one to talk about his upcoming film, The Devil’s Double. Although I haven’t seen the film myself, I have heard his portrayal is phenomenal. Because we were at Comic-Con, though, we started off talking about what he thinks about all of it and then jumped into the film. We really dug into his dueling roles as Latif Yahia and Uday Hussein and how it was shot. Along the way we also talked about his experience on Captain America: The First Avenger (he plays Howard Stark), the upcoming Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and how it was to work with director Timur Bekmambetov. LAFF 2011: THE DEVIL’S DOUBLE Review; Update on THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE Reboot

Monday night The Los Angeles Film Festival hosted a special screening of Lee Tamahori’s new “Iraqspolitation” film, The Devil’s Double followed by an after party at the Ritz Carlton hotel populated by numerous celebrity impersonators as well as real life celebrities. Collider was on hand to see the film and scope out the festivities.

While at the party, I spoke briefly to Twisted Pictures co-owner and Saw producer Mark Burg about his upcoming reboot of the Texas Chain Saw Massacre franchise. “It’s going great,” said Burg. “We start shooting July 18th.” When asked about Bill Moseley’s connection to the film Burg hesitated, saying that the ink wasn’t dry on the contract. He did however confirm that if Moseley is in the film, which looks very likely, he will not be reprising his role as Choptop from 1986’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Part 2 but instead playing an entirely new character.  Read on for a review of The Devil’s Double.
