A number of actors have signed on for the big screen adaptation of Summer in February. Based on the novel by Jonathan Smith, the story takes place at the Newlyn School of artists at the turn of the century and centers on the bohemian Lamorna Group. Billed as “a true tale of love, liberty and scandal,” THR reports that Dominic Cooper (Captain America: The First Avengers), Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey), Ophelia Lovibon (Mr. Popper’s Penguins), and Hattie Morahan (The Bank Job). Christopher Menaul, who helmed the U.K.’s Prime Suspect, is onboard to direct and Smith adapted his own book for the screen. Members of the Lamorna Group included painter Alfred Munnings and artists Harold and Laura Knight.
Cooper has had a big year, breaking out with the Sundance drama The Devil’s Double and going on to star in Captain America and My Week with Marilyn. He’ll next be seen in the feature film adaptation of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Production on Summer in February is set to begin in January.

What’s fascinating about The Devil’s Double is that Dominic Cooper gets to give two performances – often playing against each other – that are of such different pitches it’s as if the whole movie existed solely as an actor showcase. On one hand he’s playing Uday Hussein, the son of Saddam Hussein and a Caligula-in-training who likes having sex with schoolgirls and killing people. And then he’s also playing Latif Yahia, the man who looks enough like Uday to be hired (under protest) by Uday to be his body double. It’s Cooper’s movie and he nails it. The film itself (directed by Lee Tamahori) is a bit tired and formulaic, with interesting notes here and there, and a good whore with a heart of something performance by Ludivine Sagnier, but it’s hard not to walk away dazzled by its star but not the movie. Our review of the Blu-ray of The Devil’s Double follows after the jump.

Sometimes a memoir has to be taken with a grain of salt. In My Week With Marilyn, a retelling of a young man who has the time of his life on and off-set with Marilyn Monroe, things can become a bit eye-rolling. How much actually happened manages to be less important. What is essential is a small glimpse into something we may already know but remains heartbreaking nonetheless: Marilyn was an imperfect creature trying to keep from being swallowed alive by her fame. Despite not answering much of the whys and remaining mostly fluff, director Simon Curtis gives Michelle Williams the daunting task of playing Monroe near the peak of her popularity and she nails it. You can look at stills as much as you want, but the moving image allows Williams to blend into the role and become something audiences can fall in love with all over again. Director Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli) has found his female lead for the thriller Motor City. Deadline reports that Amber Heard (The Rum Diary) has landed the female lead in the pic opposite Dominic Cooper. The film centers on a man who gets released from prison and sets out on a revenge mission to hunt down the people who framed him. There are currently no details on Heard’s role, but the actress has been gaining traction as of late starring in Drive Angry, NBC’s now-cancelled The Playboy Club, and most recently The Rum Diary with Johnny Depp.
Cooper recently starred in Captain America: The First Avenger and drew positive remarks for his performance in this year’s The Devil’s Double. He’ll next be seen in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Motor City was scripted by Chad St. John. The film will be Hughes’ first solo directorial effort, as he helmed his previous pics alongside brother Allen. Joel Silver is producing, and with the two leads set expect to hear more casting news soon.

Last week, it was reported that Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) and Kit Harrington (Game of Thrones) were the frontrunners to star in Arthur & Lancelot, a reinvention of the Arthurian legend by writer/director David Dobkin (The Change-Up). Heat Vision has now confirmed Warner Bros. signed Kinnaman to play Lancelot. The next step is for Kinnaman to do chemistry reads with a number of young actors vying for the role of Arthur, including Harrington, Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides), Dominic Cooper (Captain America), Hans Matheson (Sherlock Holmes), Jim Sturgess (21), Liam Hemsworth (The Last Song), and Benjamin Walker (star of the upcoming Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter). I really liked Kinnaman’s work in The Killing—there’s a great intensity to his screen presence. Cooper is similar in that vein, but otherwise, the list suggests Dobkin’s Arthur is more boyish in contrast to Kinnaman as Sir Lancelot.

The first trailer for My Week With Marilyn has gone online. Based on the memoirs of Lawrence Olivier’s assistant Colin Clark, the film details a week in the life of Marilyn Monroe as seen through the eyes of Clark. The trailer looks pretty great, and Michelle Williams looks to be going all out for the role of Monroe. It’s impressive to see her play the dichotomy of the public Marilyn and the private Marilyn, and Williams seems to be holding nothing back. I like the character-centric plot, and I’m interested to see where the overall arc of the film goes.

When Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli) signed on to direct, Motor City became a priority at Warner Bros. The next step is to find the right star to play “a felon who, after being released from prison, begins tracking down the men who framed him.” It will be tricky to pull off, because the screenplay by Chad St. John that made the 2009 Black List is said to contain just a few lines of dialogue. An early report suggested Chris Evans, Joel Edgerton, and Jeremy Renner were in contention. All strong choices, but Variety adds another in more serious talks with the studio: Dominic Cooper. Cooper shined a little less brightly than fellow candidate Evans in Captain America this summer, but that was just a paycheck compared to the showier vehicle Cooper had in The Devil’s Double. Producer Joel Silver was reportedly so impressed with Cooper’s performance in a dual role in The Devil’s Double that he sought the actor out for Motor City.
The premise is instantly alluring, even if the latest draft isn’t quite so dialogue-free as it used to be. I don’t know how to phrase this less awkwardly, but… Cooper has a really interesting face. It’s the wide-set eyes. Perfect for this kind of role, especially since he has the chops to back it up.

At Comic-Con, I had the great pleasure to sit down with Dominic Cooper one-on-one to talk about his upcoming film, The Devil’s Double. Although I haven’t seen the film myself, I have heard his portrayal is phenomenal. Because we were at Comic-Con, though, we started off talking about what he thinks about all of it and then jumped into the film. We really dug into his dueling roles as Latif Yahia and Uday Hussein and how it was shot. Along the way we also talked about his experience on Captain America: The First Avenger (he plays Howard Stark), the upcoming Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and how it was to work with director Timur Bekmambetov. With director Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger set to hit theaters next week, Paramount has released the EPK (electronic press kit) which includes 4 movie clips, a Meet Captain America Featurette, and almost 9 minutes of behind the scenes footage from when they were making the movie (B-Roll). If you’re trying to stay spoiler free, I’d advise you to avoid watching these videos. But if you want to see as much footage as possible, hit the jump. The behind the scenes footage is really cool. Especially if you want to see what it was like on set.

Monday night The Los Angeles Film Festival hosted a special screening of Lee Tamahori’s new “Iraqspolitation” film, The Devil’s Double followed by an after party at the Ritz Carlton hotel populated by numerous celebrity impersonators as well as real life celebrities. Collider was on hand to see the film and scope out the festivities.
While at the party, I spoke briefly to Twisted Pictures co-owner and Saw producer Mark Burg about his upcoming reboot of the Texas Chain Saw Massacre franchise. “It’s going great,” said Burg. “We start shooting July 18th.” When asked about Bill Moseley’s connection to the film Burg hesitated, saying that the ink wasn’t dry on the contract. He did however confirm that if Moseley is in the film, which looks very likely, he will not be reprising his role as Choptop from 1986’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Part 2 but instead playing an entirely new character. Read on for a review of The Devil’s Double.

A batch of new images from Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger have been released. A couple of them we’ve seen in the trailer, but some of them are brand new. The more I see of this project, the more excited I get. Hopefully everything comes together and Marvel goes out with a bang before next summer’s The Avengers. Directed by Joe Johnston, the film stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Stanley Tucci, Tommy Lee Jones, and Hugo Weaving. Hit the jump to check out the images. Captain America: The First Avenger opens in 3D on July 22, 2011.

The first image from Timur Bekmambetov’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter has gone online. In case you couldn’t get the plot from the title, the movie is about America’s 16th President secret life as a vampire slayer. Based off the book by Seth Grahame-Smith, the story re-imagines that Lincoln’s mother and grandfather were killed by a vampire and that the president’s resolve to end slavery was due in part to the “fact” that vampires were involved with the slave trade. However, he also learns that there are good vampires and bad vampires and that he can’t simply just kill them all willy-nilly.
Hit the jump for the image and to learn how the production is devoted to historical accuracy in this incredibly silly story. The film stars Benjamin Walker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Anthony Mackie, Dominic Cooper, Alan Tudyk, Jimmi Simpson, and Refus Sewell. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter opens in 3D on June 22, 2012.

The first trailer for The Devil’s Double has been released. The film stars Dominic Cooper in the dual roles of Saddam Hussein’s sadistic son Uday and Uday’s body-double Latif Yahia. The trailer definitely looks interesting, and Steve himself caught the film at Sundance and thought it was great, calling it “batshit crazy.” I like the vibe of the flick that the trailer suggests, and can’t wait to see more.

Lionsgate has released an eye-catching poster for Lee Tamahori’s upcoming action-drama The Devil’s Double. The film stars Dominic Cooper in the dual roles of Saddam Hussein’s sadistic son Uday and Uday’s body-double Latif Yahia. The film played at Sundance and speaking to people who saw it, the general consensus seemed to be that it’s fun and excessive in a Scarface kind of way. Steve caught the film and thought it was great, saying “if you’re a fan of gangster films, excessive violence, and a crazy story that’s never been told on screen, I definitely recommend The Devil’s Double.” I’m looking forward to seeing it when it hits theaters this summer.
Hit the jump to check out the poster, which I like but think it could use more gold. The Devil’s Double opens July 29th. Click here for Steve’s interview with Cooper about the film.

Rufus Sewell will be the vampire hunted in Timur Bekmambetov’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Variety reports that Sewell will play “Adam, the lead vampire villain” in the 3D action-horror flick. The film stars Benjamin Walker as our re-imagined 16th President, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Mary Todd Lincoln, Anthony Mackie as Abe’s friend Will, Alan Tudyk as Stephen A. Douglas, Jimmi Simpson as Lincoln’s right hand man, and Dominic Cooper as Lincoln’s vampire-slaying mentor, Henry.
