Yesterday, we reported that a stellar cast was joining the outstanding Aubrey Plaza in Maggie Carey’s comedy The Hand Job. A cast that includes Plaza, Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, Donald Glover, Connie Britton, Mae Whitman, Alia Shawkat, Johnny Simmons, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse is already a must-see. But now Variety is reporting that more talented actors have signed on. The cast will now include Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights) and Mystery Team co-stars and co-writers Dominic Dierkes and DC Pierson.
For those unfamiliar with the plot, The Hand Job stars Plaza as a valedictorian who wants to become more sexually experienced before she heads to college. While we reported the majority of the current cast yesterday, we now know which roles they’ll be playing. Hit the jump for more.

With the release of Mystery Team on DVD and other formats yesterday, I got the chance to speak with director, co-writer, and editor Dan Eckman (above on the far left). Readers of the site know by now that I’m a huge DERRICK Comedy fan and think that Mystery Team is destined for cult comedy status. I spoke with Eckman last year after I saw the film at Comic-Con and we had a great conversation so I was happy to talk with him again.
In the interview, Eckman spoke about the challenges in distributing the film, finalizing the film in the editing room, the learning experience of shooting Mystery Team, among other topics.

To help promote the release of their film Mystery Team on DVD and other formats, DERRICK Comedy has released a new sketch entitled “Thomas Jefferson”. I particularly liked it not because of the brilliant time-travel stuff or what really captures Jefferson’s interests, but because they really did nail Jefferson’s personality. I presume the group read Joseph Ellis’ biography of George Washington, “His Excellency”. Readers of the book know that Jefferson was a giant douche. So this video is not only hilarious, but is also a historically accurate depiction of the found father.

Mystery Team was one of the best comedies I saw last year. Unfortunately, it didn’t get the wide release (or even much of a limited release) that I was hoping for so a lot of people who wanted to see it in theaters weren’t able to. That changes today as the film has now been released on DVD, digital download, On Demand, and video game consoles. You’re going to want to see this movie as soon as possible so you can say you got in on the ground floor of what I think will be a big cult comedy.
Last week, I got to do a conference call with stars Dominic Dierkes, Donald Glover, and DC Pierson. The three not only star in the film but they co-wrote it with their fellow DERRICK comedy members Dan Eckman (who also directed the film) and Meggie McFadden (who also produced the film). I talked with the guys about various topics including their attempts to get the film out in theaters, what their future plans are, what Glover (who stars on NBC’s Community) hopes will happen with his character next season, and Pierson and I briefly nerd out about Magic: The Gathering.

It’s been almost two years since their last short film (if you don’t count “Mystery Team Adventures” from a few months ago), but Derrick Comedy is still going strong as they’ve released their new short-form hilarity, “Boy Band”, while continuing to push for their excellent movie “Mystery Team” to come to your city. If you forgot why you loved Derrick (and I don’t understand why; they have a website with all their videos), this will quickly refresh your memory. Once again, the group knows how to make you laugh and feel dirty at the same time (…and you can just take a bath…).
Now the important part: you need your city to get “Mystery Team”. Unlike “Paranormal Activity” which just made people think they got the film released, you actually have to demand that “Mystery Team” come to your town and get all your friends to demand it as well. It’s a hilarious film and you’re missing out if you don’t catch it. The best I can do is ask our Atlanta readers to please CLICK HERE and Demand It for our city. You’re just going to have to trust me on this one. Hit the jump to watch “Boy Band”, learn more about “Mystery Team’s” quest to reach more theaters, and if you’re one of the glorious cities that will have a chance to see the film this holiday season. It will just be our little secret.

Most of my online colleagues already knew “Mystery Team” was great because they saw it at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. I assumed it would be great because of DERRICK comedy’s previous work and I was not disappointed when I saw the film at Comic-Con. I feel bad that I have to wait till October to see it again (although if you live in these cities, you’ll have a chance to see it sooner).
Thankfully, DERRICK has released a short film called “Mystery Team Adventures: The Case of the Haunted Hotel”. They premiered it at Comic-Con but now it’s online for the world to see and it gives a good sense of the feature’s “PG-characters in an R-rated movie” humor. Hit the jump to check out the new short. “Mystery Team” begins a limited release on August 28th and expands nationwide this October.

If you read any website that covers movies, one of the films we’ve all embraced is DERRICK comedies “Mystery Team”. The reason we’ve all jumped on the bandwagon is “Mystery Team” is really funny and absolutely worth checking out when it plays in your area. And if you don’t believe what I have to say about the film, here’s Matt’s review. As you all know, he’s hard to please, and his review is a love letter.
Anyway, at this year’s Sundance I got the chance to speak with Dan Eckman, Meggie McFadden, Donald Glover, D.C Pierson and Dominic Dierkes (DERRICK Comedy), but it was before I saw the movie. So when I found out the group would be at Comic-Con, we scheduled another interview and you can watch it after the jump. The only thing to know is, Donald Glover had recently been in an “accident” and some of the things he was saying were quite shocking. You’ll see what I mean after the jump.

I’ve been a DERRICK comedy fan for a few years now. I’m sure that there are many who can say that, but it’s gonna matter after this fall when the movie hits theatres and the comedy troupe blows up in a big way. When that happens, we can say that we loved DERRICK comedy before they were popular and totally sold-out (even though they’re not going to sell-out, anything that was indie and then became popular is automatically “selling-out”). Already greeted with tremendous adulation at this year’s Sundance Film Festival along with screenings in both New York and LA, the buzz on this film is getting intense and not to jinx it, but I think it’s destined to be a sleeper hit or a massive cult smash. I’m absolutely fine with that because not only was I into them before you, but their debut feature film, “Mystery Team” is the funniest film I’ve seen this year.
Hit the jump to find out why.
Derrick Comedy’s “Mystery Team” has been one of my most-anticipated films for almost a year now. As an ardent fan of their online short films, I’ve kept the film on my radar. When the positive notices from Sundance came streaming back, I knew I had to see it.
And then I had no idea when, or even if, that opportunity would arise.
While the group held a couple screenings in New York and LA, I was cursed to live in Atlanta which is renowned for not being New York or LA. With no distributor, I wondered if I would ever get to see this film. Today, finally, I know I will get that chance.
