The international trailer for director Nick Murphy’s period psychological/supernatural thriller The Awakening has been released. The film stars Rebecca Hall as a woman bent on exposing all séances and ghost stories as exploitative shams following the death of her husband. However, when she’s called to investigate a disturbance at an all boys’ school, she’s forced to rethink her conceit. I’m really digging this trailer. The scares come from a genuine Gothic creepiness, and the mood and feel of the period really shines through. The performances don’t look too shabby either. Matt caught the film at the Toronto Film Festival and really liked it, so I’m definitely looking forward to checking it out when it hits theaters.

TIFF 2011: THE AWAKENING Review

You can keep your modern ghost stories.  I understand why they would terrify some people, but those films tend to leave me cold.  They use modern science to find something which cannot be scientifically explained, but trying to find ghosts the same way special ops teams try to find terrorists diminishes the illusion.  You can only shake the camera so much before I wonder if the ghosts have access to a tripod.  The stories also tend to lack any subtext and generating scares is their sole mission.  I prefer my ghost stories gothic and foreboding and that’s why I adored Nick Murphy’s The Awakening.  The film still uses the same conceit of using the scientific to explore the paranormal, but does so with early 1920s technology and it’s far more exciting to see an investigator who uses cameras which rely on a trip-wire and a magnesium flash than someone who went down to the local Best Buy and asked for a quality camcorder.  In addition to its creativity, Murphy paints a gorgeous picture that delivers the thrills, chills, and terrific performances from Rebecca Hall, Dominic West, and Imelda Staunton.

I’m not exactly sure who was clamoring for another Johnny English movie but they’re going to get their wish.  The UK trailer for Johnny English Reborn has gone online and it features what you would expect: slapstick, Rowan Atkinson creating awkward situations, and more slapstick.  For those who enjoy this franchise, this new installment looks like it won’t let fans down.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Rosamund Pike, Dominic West, and Gillian Anderson. Johnny English Reborn opens in the UK on October 7th.

Dominic West, Rosamund Pike and Daniel Kaluuya Join JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN

Dominic West, Rosamund Pike, and Daniel Kaluuya will join Rowan Atkinson and Gillian Anderson in Johnny English Reborn.  According to THR, Atkinson’s bumbling secret agent Johnny English will be “embroiled in trying to stop a plot by a group of international assassins hunting down the Chinese premier.”  Johnny English was released in 2003 and I’m still amazed that anyone wanted a sequel.

West recently appeared in theaters in the Roman bloodbath Centurion and is attached to the sci-fi flick John Carter of Mars and the thriller The Awakening.  Pike was last seen in An Education and Surrogates and is currently appearing in two flicks making the festival rounds: Barney’s Version and Made in Dagenham.  Kaluuya recently co-starred in the thriller Chatroom.

The poster for Neil Marshall’s sword-and-sandals action flick Centurion has hacked-and-slashed its way online.  It features one of the better taglines in recent memory: “History Is Written in Blood”.  Truer words were never spoken.  Do you have any idea how many homeless people Doris Kearns Goodwin has to murder every time she starts a new book?

Hit the jump to check out the poster along with the synopsis.  Centurion hits theaters in a limited release on August 27th.

Neil Marshall’s CENTURION to Stand Guard This Summer

Neil Marshall’s Centurion has been picked up by Magnolia Pictures. The film will be distributed through Magnolia’s genre division, Magnet. Centurion will star Michael Fassbender (Inglorious Basterds), Dominic West (The Wire, 300) and Olga Kurylenko (Hitman, Quantam of Solace).

Neil Marshall has quietly been building himself an impressive action resume. While Doomsday was no earth shattering hit, both it and the Decent sported grimy cinematography and slick action sequences. Marshall knows how to craft a tense film, and his gritty style should mesh well with the given setting and plot. Whatever happened to Outpost? Now that sounded like a fun movie. Zombies swarming an oil rig? Get that one in the pipeline (pun intended) stat Neil! Hit the jump for the synopsis of Centurion.

First CENTURION Trailer – Directed by Neil Marshall and Starring Michael Fassbender, Dominic West and Olga Kurylenko

The first trailer for Centurion has hit the net and it looks great.  Written and directed by Neil Marshall (Doomsday, The Descent, Dog Soldiers), the film stars Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, Olga Kurylenko and it’s a about a group of Roman soldiers that have to fight for their lives behind enemy lines.

When I interviewed Michael Fassbender for Fish Tank, he told me a lot about Centurion. Fassbender called it “a Roman chase film” and when I asked him what it’s about, he said, “It’s basically about a group of Roman soldiers trying to get back across the border. It sort of surrounds the legend of the Ninth Legion. What happened in this myth is the Ninth Legion went over the border into the highlands to suppress this tribal community that was wreaking havoc on their outposts. They were trying to suppress this race. It was kind of like the Gaul situation where they couldn’t manage to suppress this tribal sort of community in France. So they sent the Ninth Legion in, which was one of the best Legions they had, and they disappeared. Five thousand men got wiped out. They never came back. So it’s basically Neil’s take around that myth.”

Check out the trailer after the jump.  It’s definitely worth your time.

With production underway on director Andrew Stanton’s John Carter of Mars in London, Walt Disney has released the synopsis for the movie and also started a Facebook fan page for the film.  Here’s what they sent over:

From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton (“Finding Nemo,” “WALL-E”), JOHN CARTER OF MARS brings this captivating hero to the big screen in a stunning adventure epic set on the wounded planet of Mars, a world inhabited by warrior tribes and exotic desert beings.  Based on the first of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “Barsoom Series,” the film chronicles the journey of Civil-War veteran John Carter (TAYLOR KITSCH), who finds himself battling a new and mysterious war amidst a host of strange Martian inhabitants, including Tars Tarkas (WILLEM DAFOE) and Dejah Thoris (LYNN COLLINS).

As you might imagine, this is a huge film for us at Collider, so expect plenty of updates.  Hit the jump to read the rest of what Disney sent over:

JOHN CARTER OF MARS Begins, Marks a Science-Fiction Milestone

Andrew Stanton has made quite a name for himself at Pixar, but his first endeavor in live action films begins today as his adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ beloved John Carter of Mars starts principal photography in London. Burroughs’ string of books, written in the early 20th century, are collectively known as the “Barsoom” series and have inspired authors Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, and Robert A. Heinlein, while also having a heavy influence on Star Wars and Avatar.

Having already read the first in the series, A Princess of Mars, I have to say that there is much to be excited about as Burroughs brings an epic scale and an incredibly imagined world with resonating themes and lots of sword fighting. Joining the Academy Award-winning director is an all-star cast, including Taylor Kitsch as John Carter, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Thomas Haden Church, Polly Walker, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Bryan Cranston, and Daryl Sabara.

For the full press release, including a plot synopsis and the incredible team Stanton has assembled, hit the jump.

Bryan Cranston Joins Andrew Stanton’s JOHN CARTER OF MARS Starring Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins

Bryan Cranston, one of the best actors on TV on one of the best shows on TV, has signed on to co-star in Andrew Stanton’s (WALL-E) adaptation of John Carter of Mars.  Based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs series of sci-fi novels, the story follows John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), a Civil War soldier who is mysteriously transported to Mars.  Once there, he is caught in the middle of a war between various groups of Martians.  Heat Vision reports that Cranston will play a Civil War colonel who comes into conflict with Carter.  Unfortunately, that doesn’t sound like a very large role since I imagine most of the film will take place on some planet that is not ours.  The cast also includes Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, Polly Walker, Thomas Haden Church, James Purefoy, Dominic West, and Mark Strong.

Cranston currently stars on Breaking Bad on AMC and won back-to-back Emmys for Best Actor in a Drama for his performance as mild-mannered meth kingpin Walter White.  It’s a must-watch show.  The first season is already on DVD, the second season will be available on DVD/Blu-ray on March 16th, and the third season premieres on March 21st.  You must catch up and then tune in.

Samantha Morton, Dominic West and Polly Walker Join JOHN CARTER OF MARS

I hadn’t heard any casting news for “John Carter of Mars” lately.  The last we heard was when Willem Dafoe happened.  It was a joyous time and my worries were put to rest.  But it’s been over a month since then and when you don’t hear news about “John Carter of Mars”, you worry because the project hasn’t had the easiest time making it to production.  I ask director Andrew Stanton to call me on the cell phone I gave him for emergencies but I haven’t heard from him once.  It makes me upset and disappointed not to mention that I’m pretty sure he’s just using it to text his friends.

But it’s a relief to hear more actors are coming on board: Samantha Morton, Dominic West, and Polly Walker.  Hit the jump to find out which roles they’ll be playing.

300: The Complete Experience Blu-ray Review

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: July 21st, 2009 at 7:01 pm

slice_300_special_edition_blu-ray.jpg

We’re now in a different place with Zack Snyder. He’s directed three films, all on Blu-ray, and I have watched and reviewed all three for Collider. The most honest statement I can make is that Snyder is an amazing visual talent, who knows what the fuck he’s doing behind a camera. But after three films, I don’t know what’s going on inside his head. Sure, his first film was smartly hella commercial, and 300 was a blockbuster, but is also inherently a shallow but engaging visual spectacle. Watchmen is a great dense tome of a film, but much of its greatness belongs to the graphic novel. He has done little that can guess what he really has going on upstairs. There is great technique, but the voice is undefined. My review after the jump:
