While HBO made some big cuts from their original programming towards the end of last year, Showtime is keeping shows around as EW has learned that the cable network has given an additional season order to Shameless, House of Lies and Californication. Shameless gets a third season after its stellar ensemble cast, including William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum, has come through with a great second season while House of Lies, with Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell, has gotten stellar ratings to earn a second season while its first season is still in progress. Finally Californication is still going strong to nab a sixth season, but I don’t know if it will last beyond that. Either way, it shows that Showtime has faith in their shows and should please fans of all three series.

In November, we reported that Notorious director George Tillman Jr. would be helming a biopic about legendary jazz musician Miles DavisDon Cheadle is also at work developing his own Davis project and he has provided some new details about his movie.  Cheadle says of his film:

“It’s not a biopic, per se. It’s a gangster pic. It’s a movie that Miles Davis would have wanted to star in. Without throwing history away, we’re trying to shuffle it and make it more cubist.”

NOTORIOUS Director George Tillman Jr. to Helm Miles Davis Biopic

Director George Tillman Jr. (Faster) will develop and helm a biopic based on the life of legendary jazz musician Miles Davis.  Davis was a major force in the music world for almost fifty years and he collaborated with other jazz legends like Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Gil Evans, and Thelonious Monk.  Tentatively titled Miles, the movie will be loosely based on book Dark Magus: The Jekyll and Hyde Life of Miles Davis written by Davis’ eldest son, Gregory.  Gregory Davis will consult on the movie, and the filmmakers will further develop Isaac Fergusson‘s original draft of the screenplay.  Like pretty much every famous musician of the 20th century, Davis was heavily into drugs.  However, he managed to break his addiction and influence other musicians until his death in 1991.

First Promo for Showtime’s HOUSE OF LIES Starring Don Cheadle, Kristen Bell, and Ben Schwartz

Showtime has released the first promo for their new comedy House of Lies.  It doesn’t tell you anything about the show, which centers on “a team of cutthroat management consultants who will do anything in their pursuit of money.”  In fact, it’s just stars Don Cheadle, Kristen Bell, Ben Schwartz, Josh Lawson, and Dawn Oliveri in one of those bare, grayish sets designed for promo shoots.  But the clip (and Cheadle especially) are so infectiously silly, I got a big laugh out of it.  The cast drew me in, but now I definitely want to see more.

House of Lies premieres on January 8.  If you don’t mind a bit of juvenile humor, watch the promo after the jump.

Director Robert Zemeckis is filling out the cast for his return to live-action. Denzel Washington is set as the lead in Flight, where he will play an a pilot who is heralded as a hero after safely landing a damaged plane. His newfound hero status comes under scrutiny as an investigation is launched to determine whether or not he was drunk while flying. Now Moviehole reports that Don Cheadle and Bruce Greenwood have joined the cast. No word on what their roles entail. The report also confirms that Kelly Reilly (Sherlock Holmes), who was in negotiations to take on the female lead, is officially onboard as a drug addict who befriends Washington’s character.

Flight will be Zemeckis’ first live action film since 2000’s Cast Away, as he’s been dabbling in motion-capture fare such as The Polar Express and A Christmas Carol for the past 11 years. Filming on the project is set to get underway next month in Atlanta.

I love this time of year. The opening week of college football is upon us and we’re in the middle of a three-day Labor Day weekend. To make matters even more enticing, the 100 degree heat of the Midwest is slowly but surely becoming a distant memory. All in all, life is good. Now, for those of you who look forward to our weekly “Top 5″ installment, things are only getting better.

In this week’s edition, we’re bringing you our coverage of Star Wars: The Complete Saga (blinking Ewoks and all), a new batch of set photos from Man of Steel and The Avengers, Don Cheadle’s hilarious albeit disturbing take on Captain Planet, and an exclusive interview with 50/50 director Jonathan Levine. Hit the jump for a brief recap and link to each.

Don Cheadle Is CAPTAIN PLANET in New Funny or Die Spoof

Hey, remember that live-action Captain Planet movie we reported on last month?  Remember how stupid the idea sounded?  It still is!  But that doesn’t mean it isn’t ripe for parody and Funny or Die has done just that.  When Captain Planet (played by Don Cheadle) is summoned by the Planeteers (whose ranks include Community‘s Gillian Jacobs and Napoleon Dynamite‘s Efren Ramirez), he goes a little overboard with his superpowers.  They say that absolute power corrupts absolutely and that saying still applies to environmentally-conscious superheroes.

Don Cheadle Video Interview THE GUARD

Don Cheadle Interview THE GUARD slice

The Guard, opening Friday in limited release, stars Brendan Gleeson as the hard drinking, dope swilling yet loyal-to-a-fault titular guard – Sergeant Gerry Boyle. After discovering a John Doe with a bullet in the head, Boyle soon finds his small Irish town of County Galway infested with drug dealers, sociopaths, ruthless killers, blackmailers and maybe worst of all – The FBI. With the unwanted assistance of a straight-laced FBI agent (Don Cheadle), Boyle attempts to rid Galway of all it’s corruption and restore some facade of order.

Don Cheadle potentially has the most difficult role in the film: the “straight man”. While Brendan Gleeson, Mark Strong, Liam Cunningham and David Wilmot can play as broad and crazy as possible, it’s up to Cheadle – as FBI agent Wendell Everett – to ground the film in some semblance of reality. He’s very much the audience surrogate of the film – acting with equal parts bemusement and chagrin as these various characters and the plot itself grow crazier and crazier. In the following interview with Cheadle, he spoke about the challenges of playing the “straight man”, the difficulties (or lack thereof) of acting as producer and star on set and his plans for directing in the future, among many other topics of conversation. For the interview, hit the jump.

Don Cheadle Talks IRON MAN 3, THE AVENGERS, HOUSE OF LIES, and His Miles Davis Biopic

In his new film, The Guard, Don Cheadle plays humorless FBI agent Wendell Everett in this comedic fish-out-of-water tale of murder, blackmail, drug trafficking and rural police corruption written and directed by John Michael McDonagh.  We sat down with Cheadle at a roundtable interview today to talk about The Guard and while we were at it we also asked him about his upcoming projects like Iron Man 3, Showtime’s House of Lies, his Miles Davis project, and The Avengers.

The big news for Marvel fans is that Cheadle says Iron Man 3 will probably shoot in February and “there’s talk of a War Machine spinoff.”  With Iron Man 3 hitting theaters May 3, 2013, a February start date makes a lot of sense.  In addition, Cheadle says that even though his contract had an option to appear in The Avengers, Marvel hasn’t “exercised that option yet.”  With filming underway in New Mexico, it’s looking like Tony Stark won’t have his pal Rhodey around.  Hit the jump for what he said and look for the full interview very soon.

Sony Pictures Classics has released the domestic trailer for John Michael McDonagh’s The Guard.  A couple weeks ago, we showed you the international trailer for the film and at the time I speculated that the US trailer would dial back the racial humor.  But it actually included more!  Hooray!  This new trailer does a good job of delivering laughs and hopefully it will entice people to check out this solid small flick that features a winning performance from Brendan Gleeson.

First Trailer for THE GUARD Starring Brendan Gleeson

An international trailer for John Michael McDonagh’s comedy-crime flick The Guard has gone online.  I caught the film at Sundance and thought it was a lot of fun with a must-see starring performance from Brendan Gleeson.  The story centers on a cop (Gleeson) in Ireland who ends up assisting an FBI agent (Don Cheadle) in his hunt for drug traffickers.  What makes Gleeson’s performance so great is that he keeps you guessing as to his character’s intelligence while keeping the character’s indifference towards what other people think of him.  This trailer hints at that and I doubt the American trailer will include Gleeson’s remark “I thought only blacks lads were drug dealers. And Mexicans.”

Click over to RTE Ten to check out the trailer [via The Playlist].  We’ll have an embeddable version as soon as its available.  Sony Pictures Classics acquired the US and Latin American distribution rights to the film, but no US release date has been announced.

Kristen Bell Moves into Showtime’s HOUSE OF LIES with Don Cheadle

Last December we heard that Don Cheadle signed on to star in their dark comedy series House of Lies from Matthew Carnahan, creator and writer of the FX series Dirt. Based on Martin Kihn’s book of the same name, the half-hour comedy follows Marty (Cheadle), a highly successful, cutthroat consultant who is never above using any means (or anyone) necessary to get his clients the information they want. Now Showtime has announced that Kristen Bell, who first made waves on TV as Veronica Mars, has landed the role of Jeannie Van Der Hooven, a razor-sharp, Ivy-League graduate who works at Marty’s firm. Stephen Hopkins is directing the pilot with production beginning this month, so we’ll be looking forward to checking the show out later this year.

Sundance 2011: THE GUARD Review

If you don’t know who Brendan Gleeson is, then you’re missing out.  You may be a perfectly nice person and I’m not asking you to know every actor, but John Michael McDonagh’s The Guard is yet more proof that it’s time for Gleeson to become a guy you recognize based off name alone.  Not “Mad-Eye Moody”.  Not “Colin Farrell’s friend in In Bruges.”  Not “the kind father in 28 Days Later.”  Not “One of the bad guys in Troy.” (Although that last one is simply because no one should use Troy as a frame of reference for anything).  People need to know that Gleeson is one of the finest actors today and if they go see The Guard, they’ll understand why.  The plot relies a little too heavily on coincidence, but it’s a fun flick filled with sharp dialogue, an aggressive style, and yet another phenomenal performance from Gleeson.

WAR MACHINE Spin-Off Film Moving Forward

For those hoping to see more of James Rhodes (a.k.a War Machine), we have some good news and some bad news.  First, the good news: in a recent interview, the man responsible for the most recent cinematic turn as War Machine, Mr. Don Cheadle, confirmed that a spin-off film revolving around his heavily armed counterpart is currently in the works.  In said interview, Cheadle explained:

“They’re developing it now, they’re working on that. I think they’ve hired a writer, so we’ll see how it goes. It would be a lot of fun.”

To check out the bad news, and to hear the actor briefly discuss Jon Favreau’s Iron Man departure, hit the jump for the video interview.
