I’m sorry to say that Annie’s Boobs will not be taking over for Dan Harmon as showrunner of NBC’s Community next season. With Harmon’s impending departure, David Guarascio and Moses Port will take over the daily duties as both showrunners and executive producers. Rumor has it that Harmon, creator and executive producer for the first three seasons (which is almost half way to six seasons and a movie), may stay on as a consulting producer. Guarascio and Port have a long history of television writing and producing; they’re best known for the moderately long-running NBC series, Just Shoot Me and recently added Aliens in America, Happy Endings and El Jefe to their resume. It’s great that Guarascio and Port have experience in the industry and that should help with keeping the show afloat, but will the intangible allure of Community disappear with Harmon? Hit the jump for much, much more.
Update: Dan Harmon has responded to this sad news on his blog. Hit the jump for more.

That “six seasons and a movie” mantra that I’ve been chanting for the past week must have counted for something (you’re welcome, Internet). It’s just been reported that NBC has renewed the brilliantly funny comedy Community for a fourth season. We reported earlier today on the network’s renewals for Parenthood, The Office, and a final season of 30 Rock, but the lack of news about Community was troubling. Fans can now breathe much easier with the promise that everyone’s favorite study group will be back on our TV screens this fall. Following an abrupt, network-imposed hiatus, the series returned to strong ratings and has been drawing significant audiences week after week. Hit the jump for more.

Before he was the nerdy and naive Troy on Community, comedian Donald Glover was making a career for himself as a writer on 30 Rock. The actor can even be heard on character Tracy Jordan’s (played by Tracy Morgan) holiday song Werewolf Bar Mitzvah (one of my favorite gags to come out of the hilarious series). Now Glover will have a more prominent role as a guest star on the new forthcoming live episode of 30 Rock this month. TV Line has word that Glover will play a young version of Tracy Jordan. This will happen on the live episode which will air on April 26th. Apparently Glover’s impression of Tracy Jordan (who is basically a somewhat exaggerated version of Tracy Morgan) is almost perfect to the point that he even finished some of Morgan’s vocals on the aforementioned spooky, scary song when Morgan wasn’t available. Can you tell the difference when listening to the entire track after the jump?

Just a few days ago, we learned that the cast of Community would get animated for a series of online shorts to promote the delayed return of the NBC comedy series. Now Hulu has part one of the three-part webisode series available online. Titled Abed’s Master Key, the shorts see Dean Pelton hire Abed as his temporary assistant. Entrusted with a Greendale Master Key, Abed abuses his power to help his friends, and after Britta confronts Abed, she heads down the same dark path. This should be a great holdover until the series returns March 15th and will at least kill two minutes of your work day with some laughs. Watch the short after the jump!

When NBC announced that they would be putting Community on “hiatus,” there was mass hysteria. People formed a flash mob at 30 Rock, a proactive Tumblr account and even the students of Greendale Community College asked for your help. While you can rest assured that Community isn’t technically canceled, there are some who can shoulder that burden better than others. Donald Glover, known in Community circles as Troy Barnes, is now reaching out to fans in a new PSA with hopes that we can still save Community. The effect its hiatus has had on our world is truly heartbreaking. You can get caught up on all of our previous PSAs here, but this one may be the most worthwhile. Hit the jump to hear what Glover has to say.

We all miss Community right now especially since NBC has deigned that it be replaced with garbage like Whitney and Are You There, Chelsea? The show will return, but we don’t know when. In the meantime, we’ll have to be satisfied with anything Community-related and artist Aviv Or has done some fun illustrations where he’s re-imagined the cast as X-Men characters. I would say all the characters have been matched up correctly, although I would have liked to seen Annie’s Boobs done as a little tiny Beast.

In this, the first official Saturday of fall for countries in the Northern Hemisphere, I’m happy to report that temperatures in the Midwest are down to a brisk 60 degrees Fahrenheit. As someone who can’t be in the sun/heat for more than fifteen minutes without experiencing incapacitating sunburns, this is a welcomed change to be sure. On a separate note, readers of the site may have noticed that my productivity has decreased in the last week. In a bittersweet piece of news, I’ve taken on full-time employment in the wide world of telecommunications thus explaining my absence. Nevertheless, I’m going to do my level best to keep the “Top 5″ coming each and every weekend for as long as I can. As for today…
…In this week’s installment, you can find the new, nearly four-minute trailer for David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Community interviews with Chevy Chase, Donald Glover, Danny Pudi, Gillian Jacobs and more, Killer Elite interviews with Jason Statham, Clive Owen, Yvonne Strahovski and director Gary McKendry, the first trailer for Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar and an ultra-important PSA teaching parents how to talk with their kids about Star Wars. Hit the jump for a brief recap and link to each.

A few weeks ago, I got to visit the set of one of the best shows on television: NBC’s Community. As I said when I posted a bunch of behind the scenes photos, I learned a lot about the upcoming third season and it all sounds great. Since I know most of you don’t want to be spoiled, I’ll just leave you with a hint of what’s to come. While last season was about Pierce (Chevy Chase) being the antagonist of the group, the third season is about outside antagonists…
While on set, I got to participate in group interviews with the cast. The other week I posted Joel McHale (Jeff) with Alison Brie (Annie), as well as Danny Pudi (Abed) with Yvette Nicole Brown (Shirley). For today’s interview, I’ve got Donald Glover (Troy) and Gillian Jacobs (Britta). During the on set interview they talked about how they find the right delivery for a joke, the filming process, the next Halloween episode, the arcs of the first two seasons and what’s coming up on season three, and they talk about what they bring from their real life to the characters. Hit the jump to watch and make sure to tune in this Thursday night when Community returns with new episodes!

Community, Dan Harmon’s gift to television, is one of those shows that it feels like a gift that it’s on network television. Such is network television, and the show has struggled with ratings, but pound for pound each episode offers more laughs than pretty much everything else out there, and it comes with a unique sensibility. As great as shows like Parks and Rec, etc. are, Community feels like something new. Perhaps it’s the self-awareness – which can be partly traced to shows like Spaced – but it’s got its own energy, and an unmatched ensemble. Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Chevy Chase, Yvette Nicole Brown, Donald Glover, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Ken Jeong and Jim Rash offer such different characters and comic approaches than the mixing and matching always makes for fun. Our review of Community Season Two on DVD follows after the jump.

Earlier today, Steve got the chance to visit the set of one of the best shows on television, NBC’s Community, and I’m insanely jealous. He was on set to help promote the season two DVD, which hits stores September 6th, and season three of the show which premieres on NBC Thursday September 22nd at 8/7c. While he’ll have the full report/video intervuew from the set up at a later date, castmember (and scene-stealer) Donald Glover was asked about the new black Spider-Man that was unveiled as part of the Ultimate comic book series and we wanted to get what he said up for you now.
As you may or may not know, when Sony was casting The Amazing Spider-Man, a fairly large “Donald Glover for Spider-Man” campaign was launched to try and get him cast in the reboot. Obviously Andrew Garfield nabbed the role, but Glover revealed today that writer Brian Bendis actually based his new black Spider-Man on seeing Glover in Spider-Man pajamas in an episode of the show. Hit the jump to see what he had to say. And if you’re not watching Community, get your shit together and tune in this fall. You’re sorely missing out.

Pop-pop! The cast and creative team behind NBC’s Community entertained audience members today and gave us some sneak peeks about the upcoming season 3. They were introduced by a countdown ending in a remixed clip montage of some of our favorite scenes from past episodes. On hand with creator Dan Harmon were cast members Donald Glover (Troy), Danny Pudi (Abed), Gillian Jacobs (Britta), Yvette Nicole Brown (Shirley), Joel McHale (Jeff), Ken Jeong (Chang), Jim Rash (Dean Pelton) and, of course, Chevy Chase (Pierce). Alison Brie (Annie) was unable to attend due to shooting for Save the Date, but did take questions through twitter (@AlisonBrie). Hit the jump to read about a special appearance by Annie’s Boobs.

If you can’t wait a few more hours to see the exciting conclusion to the second season of NBC’s fantastic comedy series Community, then you are in luck. To whet your appetite we have a clip from the end of the two-part A Fistful of Paintballs season finale and this time Jeff (Joel McHale) and Troy (Donald Glover) are arguing about their master plan to survive. Tonight all hell breaks loose as series creator Dan Harmon says, “the Western motif falls away and an out-and-out war happens. There’s a kind of an epic, wartime, band-of-rebels-against-a-larger-force Star Wars feel to the second one.” Check out the clip fro the final episode of the second season of Community after the jump.

Yesterday, we reported that a stellar cast was joining the outstanding Aubrey Plaza in Maggie Carey’s comedy The Hand Job. A cast that includes Plaza, Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, Donald Glover, Connie Britton, Mae Whitman, Alia Shawkat, Johnny Simmons, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse is already a must-see. But now Variety is reporting that more talented actors have signed on. The cast will now include Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights) and Mystery Team co-stars and co-writers Dominic Dierkes and DC Pierson.
For those unfamiliar with the plot, The Hand Job stars Plaza as a valedictorian who wants to become more sexually experienced before she heads to college. While we reported the majority of the current cast yesterday, we now know which roles they’ll be playing. Hit the jump for more.

Steve recently spoke with actor and writer Bill Hader about his upcoming projects. One movie he might try to shoot while he’s on hiatus from Saturday Night Live is his wife’s Maggie Carey’s script, The Hand Job. The script landed on the 2009 Black List (a list of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood) and we reported back in October that Aubrey Plaza was attached to play the lead role of a 17-year-old who wants to learn about various sexual activities before she goes to college. Hader says that he, Andy Samberg, Donald Glover, Connie Britton, Alia Shawkat, Mae Whitman, and Johnny Simmons are attached to co-star, and if that cast doesn’t make you excited, then you must not recognize these actors by name. You should work on that.
Hit the jump for what Hader told Steve about the project as well as a more dramatic film he may do called The Skeleton Twins with Anna Faris and Mark Duplass. Click here for what Hader had to say about his SNL character “Stefon”, and be sure to check back later today for more of Steve’s interview with Hader.
UPDATE: Steve here. Just spoke to Bill Hader again and he told me that Chris Mintz-Plasse is now attached to Hand Job as well! Hope this thing gets made this summer.

Last year when the search for a new Peter Parker was underway for director Marc Webb’s Spider-Man reboot, Community star Donald Glover half-jokingly threw his name into contention. This started a firestorm of controversy over whether or not a black actor should play the traditionally white role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man (our story on the matter got almost 200 comments). I loved the idea since I’m not only a huge fan of Glover’s work, but I also thought it would give the unnecessary reboot its own personality. While Glover didn’t get the role, I’m convinced that he’ll be headlining movies within the next five years anyway.
In a recent stand-up bit, Glover chimed in on the controversy. Unsurprisingly, he’s hilarious about it and explains why casting him as Spider-Man wouldn’t be the same thing as casting Michael Cera as Shaft. Hit the jump to check out the bit.
