After 35 years of creating Star Wars posters, artist Drew Struzan has attempted to retire, but may be lured back by the siren call of Disney’s new Star Wars trilogy.  In fact, Struzan himself reports that Disney has literally called him recently to possibly return in order to create posters for the new films.  While nothing is official at the moment, Struzan seems open to the idea if not overly enthusiastic about it.  For fans of Struzan’s work, it would certainly be nice to see some new creations for Episodes 7, 8 and 9, and Struzan’s involvement would also lend more consistency to the look of the franchise.  Hit the jump to see what Struzan had to say about the opportunity along with some examples of his work. [Update: Struzan has spoken up to debunk this rumor.  Read his statement after the jump.]

Limited Paper: Why Don’t More People Know About Drew Struzan’s Amazing CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON Poster?

by     Posted: October 12th, 2012 at 3:52 pm

For serious poster collectors and Universal Monsters fans, it will come as no surprise that Drew Struzan—the legendary artist who created some of the most well-known, iconic movie posters ever to come out of Hollywood—once created a poster for Universal’s Creature From The Black Lagoon:  after all, the image has been bouncing around since 2001, and it’s easily discovered for anyone who does a little poking around on Struzan’s website;  it’s not as though Struzan’s been keeping this thing a secret.  And yet, I recently noticed—over the course of several email-based conversations with readers—that very few of you seemed to be aware of this print’s existence.

With Mondo’s Universal Monsters show just about a week away from opening, I figured it’d be a good time to take a look at the history of this piece:  how it came about, who produced it, and—last but not least—where people may be able to get ahold of one if one were so inclined.  For all of that (and more), meet me after the jump, folks.

The Alamo Drafthouse’s Summer of ’82 series has been going strong all summer long, offering up screenings of movies that have—when you get right down to it—kind of mopped the floor with virtually all of the new movies Hollywood’s released this summer.  Part of the fun has been seeing which of these screenings would get a Mondo poster, and this morning we finally got confirmation on one Mondo-related rumor we’ve been hearing for some time:  this Friday’s The Thing screening is getting a print…and it’s a doozy.  Meet me after the jump for more info, folks…

OEUVRE: DREW STRUZAN Book Review

by     Posted: October 10th, 2011 at 1:08 am

There aren’t really movie poster “artists” any more.  There are designers, there’s photoshop, there’s loads of posters that are whipped up in the course of a day or perhaps even a few minutes (looking at you X-Men: First Class), but there’s rarely any artistry to them.  Granted, advertising is advertising, but a movie poster can be so much more.  Artist Drew Struzan made them more.  His style put a classic, refined touch to any poster and he’s responsible for the unforgettable one-sheets for geek classics like Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Back to the Future, The Goonies, and so much work.  The new book Oeuvre: Drew Struzan collects his movie posters, but what makes it special is how much it offers beyond his well-known work.  The collection of artwork included in Oeuvre will only broaden your knowledge of his work and deepen your love of his art.

The Academy Library to Archive Mondo Posters including New FRANKENSTEIN Poster by Drew Struzan

Today is a great day for the fine folks at Mondo.  The company has just sent out a press release announcing that the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ Margaret Herrick Library will archive Mondo’s growing collection of original film posters.  One of the first Mondo posters to go into the archive will be Drew Struzan’s gorgeous poster for Frankenstein, which is part of Mondo’s Universal Monsters series.  In Struzan’s long career of designing posters, this is his first screenprint.

The Mondo posters will be housed in Herrick’s existing collection of more than 38,000 posters, stored in climate-controlled vaults, and scanned into the library’s online catalog.  Speaking of finding the Mondo posters online, the company has now started up mondoarchive.com where you can check out all of the posters released thus far.  The only way the site could be better is if they told you how fast the poster sold out.  Hit the jump to check out the press release along with the Struzan Frankenstein poster. Details on the sale date, price and edition size will be revealed soon so be sure you’re following @MondoNews for the announcement.

New Struzanesque Poster for SUPER 8; Paramount Hosting Sneak Previews via Twitter [UPDATED]

by     Posted: June 8th, 2011 at 7:15 am

super-8-movie-poster-slice-01

If you’re a movie poster geek, than you’re no stranger to the work of Drew Struzan.  His work was a favorite of Steven Spielberg’s and Struzan did the iconic posters for the Indiana Jones movies, The Goonies, Back to the Future, and more.  Because Spielberg produced J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 and that film is specifically trying to recall 80s Spielberg, it makes sense that Paramount would create a Drew Struzan-like poster for the film.  However, I don’t think Struzan actually did this poster unless he forgot how to draw faces.  Seriously, it looks like poor Kyle Chandler’s face is about to melt off.

Hit the jump to check out the poster and for details on how you can pay to see the movie a day early.  Super 8 opens this Friday. [Updated: Movies.com reports that the poster is fan made.  I'm willing to give it a little more leeway since this didn't come out of Paramount's marketing department but was a labor of being super excited for the movie]

Cool Fan-Made Credits for THE WALKING DEAD

I’m usually not much for the “This fan-made thing is so cool!  I have to post it.” post.  But, umm… this fan-made credits for AMC’s The Walking Dead is pretty cool.  I have to post it.

Inspired by the poster that Drew Struzan designed for Comic-Con, Daniel M. Kanemoto took artwork from the comic that launched the series and slapped together a really impressive animated title sequence set to Eels’ “Fresh Blood.”  If you are looking forward to the October 31st premiere of The Walking Dead — which stars Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal, Laurie Holden, Steven Yuen, and Sarah Wayne Callies — check it out after the jump

New BACK TO THE FUTURE Poster For UK Re-Release

by     Posted: August 11th, 2010 at 10:59 am

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of Back to the Future, the film is getting a theatrical re-release in the United Kingdom complete with a brand spanking new poster.

The poster is very much in the vein of the Drew Struzan original, except this time the image of Marty is centered, the logo is more prevalent and the Delorean is speeding away instead of stationary. Then, of course, the text touts the 25th anniversary digital presentation and announces the October 1 theatrical release date.

Here in the United States, we’ll have to just deal with the October 26 Blu-ray release and a few select events such as We’re Going Back in Los Angeles. Hit the jump to check out the poster:
