While the long-awaited sequel to one new comedy classic is finally poised to hit theaters this December with Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, another highly anticipated follow-up is also finally moving forward.  After a year or so of stops and starts regarding a sequel to Dumb and Dumber, it was announced last night that Dumb and Dumber To has secured financing and distribution at last, with production looking to get underway as early as this fall.  Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels both reprise their roles from the 1994 film, and writers/directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly are back as well.

Though the Farrelly brothers previously teased a few plot details regarding the follow-up, Peter Farrelly went on the Nerdist podcast and talked a bit more extensively about what Dumb and Dumber To entails, also addressing how difficult it has been to get this thing made.  Moreover, he revealed that the film will likely hit theaters next summer.  Hit the jump to read on.

When last we reported on the status of the Dumb & Dumber sequel, it had been dropped by Warner Bros. with Bobby and Peter Farrelly eyeing Red Granite to finance and a number of studios vying for domestic distribution.  Today, the Farrelly brothers confirmed that Red Granite will indeed be backing the film as well as handling international distribution, and that Universal Pictures has stepped in as a domestic distributor.  Fans of Harry (Jeff Daniels) and Lloyd (Jim Carrey) should now be excited that the long awaited sequel to the 1994 hit comedy can now get off the ground.  Hit the jump for more.

Dumb & Dumber’s Lloyd (Jim Carrey) said it best: “We got no food, no jobs … our pets’ heads are falling off!”  And now it seems as if the on-screen troubles for the dumb duo will continue off screen as Warner Bros. has opted not to move forward on the sequel, Dumb and Dumber To.  The sequel to the Bobby and Peter Farrelly’s 1994 hit comedy original still has a chance, however.  The Farrellys are expected to shop the project around at other studios now that the Warners have lost interest.  Hit the jump for more.

Since October of last year, The Farrelly Brothers have planned on making a sequel to Dumb and Dumber their next film.  However, this past June, Jim Carrey dropped out of the project with the actor saying he was “frustrated” by the lack of enthusiasm on the part of Warner Bros (details later surfaced that he was also frustrated by the payday he would have received).  Despite Carrey’s lack of participation, the sequel still appears to be going forward with the Farrellys tweeting [via Vulture], “You also might be interested to know that we are almost done with the Dumb and Dumber To (sic) script. I think you’re going to like it.”

As for the plot details, the Farrellys said last month that the movie will revolve around either Harry or Lloyd possibly having sired a child, and then needing to find the child so they can get a kidney replacement.

Before he starred in Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom, Jeff Daniels was best known as the dumb (or dumber) half of Harry and Lloyd from Dumb and Dumber.  It’s nice to see that Daniels has embraced his intellectual side as well as his absurdly ignorant side, but it’s looking like he might return to form alongside Jim Carrey in a Dumb and Dumber sequel next year.  At a recent Television Critics Association panel for The Newsroom, Daniels addressed the progress of the sequel, why there has been a delay and when the project might shoot.  Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

In October, we reported that Jim Carrey was set to reteam with co-star Jeff Daniels for the sequel Dumb and Dumber To, but that apparently won’t be the case.  According to ETonline, Carrey has decided not to reprise his role as Lloyd Christmas.  The actor was reportedly “frustrated” by the lack of enthusiasm on the part of Warner Bros.  “I would have thought Dumb and Dumber To was a no-brainer,” Carrey said in a statement to ETonline, “after all it’s implied in the title.”  Original writer-directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly were going to produce and direct the sequel with Sean Anders (That’s My Boy) and John Morris co-writing the script.

This weekend is the press junket for the raunchy and outrageous comedy That’s My Boy, in which Adam Sandler plays Donny Berger, the screw-up who became a teenage parent when his smoking hot teacher gave birth to his child while in jail. While Collider was there, we got the opportunity to do an exclusive interview with director Sean Anders (Sex Drive), to talk about his involvement with the film and what he’ll be working on next.

Well this was unexpected. Having just wrapped production on a big screen version of The Three Stooges, directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly are now hoping to move on to a sequel to 1994’s Dumb and Dumber. Deadline reports that the intention is to bring back the film’s stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels to reprise their classic roles as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne. Apparently a script has already been written by Sex Drive scribes Sean Anders and John Morris, who also co-directed the Adam Sandler/Adam Samberg comedy I Hate You Dad. The plan is for the Dumb and Dumber sequel to be the Farrelly brothers’ next directorial project. The original film’s producers Charles B. Wessler, Brad Krevoy, and Steve Stabler are returning as well.

You may remember that a painful sequel to the hit comedy, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, was produced in 2003 without the brothers involvement. Hopefully this new sequel will fare better. If Carrey and Daniels do indeed come back, this could actually be a lot of fun. There’s no word on the story or whether other characters from the first film will appear, but I’m hoping for a cameo by Petey and the blind kid all grown up. The only other film on Carrey’s schedule next year is the Steve Carell comedy Burt Wonderstone, and Daniels is currently filming Aaron Sorkin’s new series for HBO, so they could feasibly fit the film into their schedules.
