Dylan Dog: Dead of Night

DYLAN DOG: DEAD OF NIGHT Blu-Ray Review

I’d love to chalk the failure of Dylan Dog: Dead of Night to vampire fatigue, and indeed that’s part of its problem. So inundated are we with tales of bloodsuckers and the secret lives they lead that a movie needs to really deliver something original if it wants to stand out. Dylan Dog doesn’t, content instead to regurgitate tired old clichés about evil vamps in Armani suits who hang out in trendy nightclubs and plot to destroy the world in some damn way or another. That creative laziness expands outward to engulf every moment of the film, from the shockingly by-the-numbers detective voice-overs to the very notion of a supernatural detective. Director Kevin Munroe Interview DYLAN DOG slice

Although Dylan Dog is director Kevin Munroe’s first live-action feature, his background in developing comics and his love for the story made him the perfect choice for the job. Blending horror with comedy, the film tells the story of a private investigator who gets drawn back into the world of the undead when a mysterious woman (Anita Briem) asks for his help on a case. To make matters worse, his assistant Marcus (Sam Huntington) gets turned into a zombie, and Dylan suddenly finds himself caught between warring vampire and werewolf clans.

During this exclusive interview with Collider, Kevin Munroe talked about how he first came across the story of Dylan Dog, changing the melancholy tone of the comics in favor of a more humorous feel for the film, why it’s been such a long journey to the big screen, what made Brandon Routh and Sam Huntington perfect for their roles, the decision to use practical make-up for the creatures, and how he would love to do a sequel where he could explore Dylan’s roots back in London. He also talked about the project he is currently working on for LucasFilm, and how both of his comics – El Zombo and Olympus Heights – are currently in development for film and television, respectively. Actors Brandon Routh and Sam Huntington became best friends after bonding during their experience on Superman Returns. Now, they’ve reunited for a very different film, this one based on the popular Italian comic book Dylan Dog. After being cast in the title role, Routh immediately thought of Huntington for the role of Dylan’s zombie sidekick Marcus, having no idea that Huntington had already auditioned for the role and had impressed director Kevin Munroe. What results is a film that is both fun and funny, with equal ports gore and laughs.

Sitting down to chat with Brandon Routh and Sam Huntington for this exclusive interview for Collider, it’s easy to see the strength of their friendship, and their rapport is often hilarious. During the interview, they talked about why they enjoyed these characters so much, how much their friendship added to their on screen relationship, how great it was to have the added bonus of people in practical make-up for the creatures in the film, and how they would love to work together again. Huntington also shared some insight about what he’d like to see from Season 2 of his hit SyFy series Being Human, which starts filming in July. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

Kevin Munroe interview DYLAN DOG and Secret CGI Movie LucasFilm WonderCon slice

With director Kevin Munroe’s Dylan Dog getting released April 29, stars Brandon Routh, Sam Huntington and Munroe were at WonderCon to premiere footage and also answer fan questions.  If you’re not familiar with Dylan Dog, the film blends horror and humor and it’s set in the backstreets of New Orleans.  From the synopsis, “the story revolves around Dylan Dog, the world’s only private investigator of the undead with a business card that features his slogan, “investigator of the paranormal:  no pulse, no problem.”  Along with his assistant Marcus, Dylan will go where the living dare not — facing down friend and foe alike, until justice is done.”

Before the panel, I sat down with Routh and Huntington for a very loose interview.  You can watch it here.  I also got to speak with Munroe. During our extended conversation, we talked about being at WonderCon, how he got attached to Dylan Dog and the long road to release, how his CGI background helped with production, what are his go-to karaoke songs, editing, and he revealed that he’s working on a secret movie project at Lucasfilm that’s all CGI and not related to Star Wars.  Keep in mind, ILM animated Rango. New DYLAN DOG: DEAD OF NIGHT Featurette

A new featurette detailing the setting of the upcoming supernatural thriller Dylan Dog: Dead of Night has gone online.  For those unfamiliar with the property, it’s based on an Italian comic that is set in London and follows paranormal investigator Dylan Dog (played by Brandon Routh).  It was too cost-prohibitive to shoot in London so the production moved to New Orleans, which also has a great sense of mystery and horror.

Hit the jump to check out the featurette.  Dylan Dog: Dead of Night also stars Sam Huntington, Peter Stormare, Anita Briem, and Taye Diggs.  The film opens April 29th. Click here for Steve’s WonderCon interview with Routh and Huntington.

U.S. Trailer and Poster for DYLAN DOG: DEAD OF NIGHT

For a few months now, we’ve been running trailers and posters for the Italian release of the English-language film Dylan Dog: Dead of Night.  Now that the movie finally has a U.S. distributor, it’s received a trailer that I can actually understand and a poster that is all kinds of generic.  I like the premise of the movie: a human detective (played by Brandon Routh) is appointed by supernatural creatures to impartially investigate crimes which happen in their underworld.  Unfortunately, that premise is undermined by the heavy reliance on Sam Huntington’s comic relief character and some truly awful special effects make-up.  Watching this trailer, I couldn’t help but wonder how this movie isn’t going straight to DVD.

DYLAN DOG: DEAD OF NIGHT Set for Release on April 29th

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 1st, 2011 at 1:37 pm

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night finally has a U.S. release date.  Kevin Munroe’s adaptation of the Italian horror comic will be released on April 29th.  Brandon Routh stars as the titular supernatural detective and co-stars Sam Huntington, Anita Briem, and Taye Diggs. The film is set to be released in Italy this month.

Heat Vision doesn’t mention how wide a release Dylan Dog is getting, but it will have some serious competition in the form of Universal’s Fast Five.  It’s tough to sell comic book movies based on comics that most moviegoers in the U.S. has heard of, but it’s even harder when you’re up against the fifth-installment of the pre-packaged Fast & Furious franchise.

New Release Dates for HUGO CABRET, DYLAN DOG: DEAD OF NIGHT, and HORRIBLE BOSSES

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 19th, 2011 at 11:58 am

The Martin Scorsese-directed fantasy adventure Hugo Cabret will arrive sooner than expected.  Deadline reports financier Graham King (of GK Films) believes the five-day Thanksgiving weekend is the optimal time window for the family film.  Sony Pictures could not provide the date, and so let GK Films take Hugo Cabret elsewhere.  Paramount Pictures has an overall deal with Scorsese, a strong relationship with King, and an opening for a Thanksgiving tentpole: the studio agreed to distribute Hugo Cabret on November 23, a busy weekend also occupied by The Muppets, Project X, Rise of the Apes, and Arthur in Christmas.

In other release date news, Box Office Mojo lists the supernatural comic book adaptation Dylan Dog: Dead of Night at April 29 opposite Fast Five, Prom, and Hoodwinked Too!.  The ensemble comedy Horrible Bosses has re-solidified its position in July.  Warner Bros. previously uprooted Bosses from July 29 to a date to be named later — now named July 8, where it faces One for the Money, Zookeeper, and limited release One Day.

The cast and synopsis for all three films are after the break.

Italian Trailer for DYLAN DOG

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 10th, 2011 at 11:50 am

The Italian trailer for Dylan Dog has gone online.  The film is based on the popular Italian comic of the same name and stars Brandon Routh, Sam Huntington, and Taye Diggs.  While the film was shot in English, the trailer is entirely in Italian with all of the voices re-dubbed (Italian Brandon Routh sounds kind of nasally).  There’s no word yet on a U.S. release date, but the movie is due out in Italy on March 16th.  Hit the jump to check out the trailer.

Sam Huntington Exclusive Interview BEING HUMAN

by Christina Radish    Posted: January 13th, 2011 at 10:15 am

On the re-imagining of the popular BBC series Being Human, premiering on SyFy January 17th, actor Sam Huntington plays Josh, a young man whose bright future was hijacked when he was turned into a werewolf and forced to abandon his family and the life he once knew with no explanation. He isolated himself, living on the fringes of society and escaping to the woods each full moon for his excruciating transformation into a werewolf. Then he met Aidan (Sam Witwer), a vampire whose friendship has given him the prospect of a normal life, with a job as an orderly in the local hospital, and a new place where the two live with a ghost named Sally (Meaghan Rath), who is on her own journey to navigate a new existence.

During a recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Sam Huntington talked about his decision to sign on for a television series, how much he has enjoyed working with his co-stars, how nerve-wracking it is to live up to the quality and popularity of the original version, what it’s like to go through the excruciating transformation process in becoming a werewolf, and how he hopes that people really connect with and enjoy the show. He also talked about how exciting it is to finally have Dylan Dog: Dead of Night being released in 2011 and said that he’s writing his own film script that he’s looking to do a role in. New Posters for THE GREEN HORNET and DYLAN DOG: DEAD OF NIGHT

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 17th, 2010 at 8:01 am

green_hornet_dylan_dog_poster_slice_01

New posters have gone online for The Green Hornet and Dylan Dog: Dead of Night.  The poster Green Hornet isn’t all that spectacular, but I’m hearing positive buzz on the film, which stars Seth Rogen and Jay Chou as guys who masquerade as heroes masquerading as villains.  They also wear masks.  As for Dylan Dog, it’s an Italian teaser poster with the letters “DD” on it instead of the full title.  However, due to the character’s popularity in Italy (the film is based on one of the best-selling Italian comic books), that shouldn’t be a problem.  If the film shows up in the U.S., the marketing is going to have to be a bit more explicit.

Hit the jump to check out both posters.  Directed by Michel Gondry (Be Kind Rewind), The Green Hornet also stars Christoph Waltz and Cameron Diaz.  The film opens in 3D on January 14, 2011.  Dylan Dog: Dead of Night was directed by Kevin Munroe (TMNT) and stars Brandon Routh and Sam Huntington.  It’s set to open in Italy in March.

Promo Trailer for DYLAN DOG: DEAD OF NIGHT Starring Brandon Routh

After the barely-a-first-look at Dylan Dog: Dead of Night from a couple weeks ago, we now have a real promo trailer for the movie.  The film’s been kicking around post-production for a while, but this promo trailer could be a good signal that it’s finally nearing a serious release date.  Then again, after seeing the promo trailer, perhaps the movie belongs in post-production hell.  While I understand promo trailers are cut to entice buyers rather than the general public, this one makes Dead of Night look like a bad episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer crossed with Hellboy if Hellboy wasn’t any good.

Dylan Dog is one of the most popular comic books of all-time in Italy.  I wonder how fans will feel after seeing this trailer.  Check it out for yourself after the jump.
