After being gone for far too long Kenny Powers (Danny McBride) is back, complete with a Confederate flag and marijuana leaf covered boogie board. thankfully the series is much better at keeping the laughs coming than Powers is at catching some waves in the season premiere of Eastbound & Down. We now find everyone’s favorite ballplayer in the minors in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina playing for the Mermen. Seemingly back at the top of his game (or at least as high as it can get in the minor leagues). Powers is always best when he’s cocky and arrogant, and since that’s basically all the time, having him getting a taste of success just makes it that much better. Hit the jump for more.

“Look at y’all jumping around like a bunch of child molesters at Chuck E. Cheese.” Damn it’s good to have Kenny Powers back, or at least know that his return to HBO for the third (and maybe final) season of Eastbound & Down is coming on February 19th, less than a month away. Now a new trailer straight from HBO promises a great duo between Danny McBride and Jason Sudeikis as Powers’ new best friend and fellow ball player and we catch a quick glimpse of the return of Will Ferrell, Steve Little, and John Hawkes too. The trailer really does speak for itself so you can check it out after the jump.

Season three of HBO’s Eastbound & Down is just around the corner, and a new teaser trailer for the highly anticipated return of everyone’s favorite failed baseball player has gone online. The action moves to Myrtle Beach this time around, and star Danny McBride looks to be joined once again by a slew of familiar faces. The crux of the trailer has McBride giving a truly horrible/fantastic speech to a group of underprivileged kids, and promises even more delectable douchbaggery from Kenny Powers in this third and possibly final season of the HBO comedy.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer and trim your mullet accordingly for the show’s February 19th season premiere.

With the midseason premieres of several new and returning series just around the corner on network television, cable has plenty of new stuff in store as well. Deadline reports HBO has just brought their midseason premiere schedule to the table with the return of the third (and possible final) season of Danny McBride in Eastbound & Down returning on February 19th at 10/9c. Then following immediately after on the same night at 10:30/9:30c Ricky Gervais brings yet another one of his British successes to the cable network with Life’s Too Short. But before all that, the new drama series Luck, starring Dustin Hoffman, will debut on January 29th. However, the series will actually have a sneak preview after the season finale of Boardwalk Empire on December 11th as well. After the jump you can check out the trailers for all three series.
Though Kenny Powers won’t be coming back until January 2012, that doesn’t mean HBO doesn’t want you to miss out on the majesty of such an iconic athlete. A short teaser for the third season of Eastbound & Down has just been released with one hell of an airbrushed tanktop featuring the shining face and signature curls for Kenny Powers on one lucky lady. It sounds like this will be the last season for the hilarious and vulgar comedy series, so savor the flavor of anticipation while you can and check out the new teaser trailer after the jump.

One of the great things about Danny McBride is how he creates different iterations of his comic persona. McBride usually plays one form of white trash or another but The Foot Fist Way’s Fred Simmons is different than Kenny Powers, and way different than the characters in Your Highness and The Pineapple Express. All are delusional egotistical assholes, but each offer different dilemmas and delights. Kenny Powers – the main character of Eastbound and Down – was a superstar and he’s still got the swagger long after he lost his arm and his money, and even when he’s hiding out in Mexico. It’s a different sort of delusion than his other characters: Kenny’s someone desperately clinging to the time when they were still hot shit, while the majority of his other characters never hit those heights, and it makes all of the difference in the world. Our review of the season one and season two Blu-rays of Eastbound and Down follow after the jump.

Coming to theaters this weekend is Ruben Fleischer’s 30 Minutes or Less. The film, which reunites Fleischer with his Zombieland star Jesse Eisenberg, tells the story of a pizza delivery boy (Eisenberg) who is strapped to a bomb and forced to rob a bank as part of a harebrained scheme hatched by two hapless criminals (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson) looking to inherent a fortune. Along the way, Eisenberg enlists his best friend, (Aziz Ansari) to help with the heist.
Recently, I got on the phone to talk to McBride about the film. Unlike his boarish characters on screen, McBride comes off as a thoughtful and well-spoken man who is far more dedicated to creating real characters than many of his detractors would like to admit. During our interview we discussed how he has refined his on-screen persona, his admiration of Nick Swardson, acting like a monkey on screen, the future of Eastbound and Down as well as several other HBO projects he has in the offing, how he would rob a bank and much more. Coming to theaters August 12th is director Ruben Fleisher’s 30 Minutes or Less. The film, which reteams Fleisher with his Zombieland star Jesse Eisenberg, tells the story of a pizza delivery boy who is strapped with a bomb and forced to rob a bank in order to help two hapless criminals (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson) raise $100,000 to pay a hitman. Along the way, Eisenberg enlists his best friend, (Aziz Ansari) to help with the heist.
I got on the phone with Danny McBride earlier this morning to discuss the film. We’ll have the full interview for you closer to the film’s release date, but today we have a quick update the upcoming final season of Eastbound & Down, McBride’s other upcoming HBO series and the hints as a possible continuation of the adventures of Kenny Powers. Here’s a trio of cable TV casting coming at you right now. First up, as if HBO’s outrageous comedy series Eastbound & Down needed to be anymore hilarious, Variety reports Saturday Night Live cast member and Going the Distance star Jason Sudeikis is getting a recurring role on the show. The comedian will play Shane, one of Kenny Powers’ (Danny McBride) new friends, likely back in Shelby, South Carolina since *SPOILER ALERT* he returned back home in the second season finale. I’m always happy to see Sudeikis show up in any comedy, so he’s definitely a welcome addition to the cast. For details on the new cast members for Game of Thrones and House of Lies, hit the jump

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the Eastbound & Down panel at the 28th annual PaleyFest in Los Angeles. Since filming hasn’t started on the show’s third season, I wasn’t sure how much the cast would say about what’s coming up. Thankfully, they dropped a few clues and I also got to hear some great behind the scenes stories about one of TV’s best comedies.
The panel featured star/creator Danny McBride, director/creator Jody Hill, executive producer Chris Henchy and stars Ana de la Reguera, Katy Mixon, Steve Little and Michael Pena. Hit the jump for a full recap of the night’s events.

March is a great month for people who like things en masse. There’s March Madness, of course, for fans of college basketball. There’s SXSW for lovers of movies and/or music. And for the TV geek, there’s PaleyFest. This year’s line-up features a metric ton of panels for The Walking Dead, True Blood, White Collar, Hot in Cleveland, Parks & Recreation, Eastbound & Down, Supernatural, American Idol, Community, Glee, and Raising Hope. But the big draw has to be “An Evening with Jimmy Fallon.” Wait — that can’t be right.
Oh, no it’s the combined Freaks & Geeks/Undeclared panel moderated by Judd Apatow. Those shows launched more than their share of careers, including Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, and Jason Segel — all official guests. Freak James Franco isn’t listed, but given how busy he likes to keep, my fingers are crossed for a surprise appearance as one of the “additional members of the casts & creative teams.”
PaleyFest 2011 unfolds March 4-17 at the Saban Theatre in Los Angeles. Hit the jump to see the full list of panelists.

Last month, we found out Comedy Central and MTV Networks were putting together The Comedy Awards, a broadcast awards event to honor the best comedy films, actors, TV series, digital content and stand-up acts. The Comedy Awards will be taped on March 26th for a premiere on Sunday, April 10th which will be simultaneous broadcast on Comedy Central, Spike TV, TV Land, VH1 and Nick At Nite. Now the nominations for the awards’ debut have finally been revealed, and they mostly hit the nail on the head. There’s love for big comedies like The Other Guys and Get Him to the Greek, but lower profile films like Cyrus and Tiny Furniture get some love too. Check out the full list of nominees after the jump.

Though the entirety of each of their second seasons has yet to air on the cable network, HBO has already renewed both Eastbound & Down starring Danny McBride, and Bored to Death starring Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson and Zach Galifianakis for a third season. Both half-hour comedy series each have their own charms (or in the case of Kenny Powers, a complete lack thereof), and continue to prove why HBO is the best place for bold comedy. Fortunately name guest stars like Don Johnson (Eastbound & Down) and Kevin Bacon (Bored to Death) in each of the series this season haven’t overshadowed the writing and have simply been icing in an already delicious cake. Here’s hoping the success continues in their next season.

Eastbound & Down. If you’re not excited for the second season, then maybe it’s time to catch up with Kenny Powers (as played by the always amazing Danny McBride). The first season follows Powers – a one-time champion baseball player who’s pissed away his career and savings on drugs and women – as he’s forced to move in with his brother and work as a P.E. teacher, and is trying desperately to get back in the game. The second season finds him in Mexico, starting the new season as a cock fighter who is lured back in to playing baseball for a rinky-dink Mexican team.
One of the key creative figures behind the show is writer-director Jody Hill. Hill caught the attention of Will Ferrell and Adam McKay with his film The Foot Fist Way, and it launched both Hill and McBride into the mainstream. McBride has been playing comic support for many in the Ferrell and Apatow-centric comedies, while Hill directed the cult classic Observe and Report. But the two found their greatest success with this HBO show. And with season two starting up this Sunday September 26 at 10:30 pm, the very friendly Hill sat down for a half hour to talk about the show, its fans and what’s next for him and for Kenny Powers. As for the discussion, the only real spoilers are casting-based (if you don’t know who’s in the season, I guess that can be a spoiler). My interview with Jody Hill follows after the jump.

With the new fall television season creeping around the corner, HBO released a couple new posters promoting the second seasons of both Bored to Death (starring Jason Scwartzman, Zach Galifianakis and Ted Danson) and Eastbound & Down (starring Danny McBride and Michael Pena). Though I’m a bit partial to the previous teaser poster for Eastbound & Down featuring Kenny Powers in a full Mariachi band outfit, the poster below with those cornrows and trademark bad-ass smirk still works. Meanwhile, Danson, Schwatzman and Galifianakis come together in a cross between Charlie’s Angels signature silhouette stance but with cocktails replacing what would be guns. You can see both of the posters in their full glory below and don’t forget to check out the season premiere for both shows back-to-back on Sunday, September 26th!
