We have arrived at the official end of summer: Labor Day weekend.  Never a blockbuster in terms of grosses, this year’s late summer crop of movies – two horror titles and a thriller – appears weaker than usual.  In fact, it looks like it will take four days for the newcomers to earn what last year’s Labor Day releases made in only three.

1 The Help $14,200,000 $118.6
2 The Debt $9,670,000 $11.6
3 Apollo 18 $8,700,000 $10.7
4 Shark Night 3D $8,640,000 $10.5
5 Rise of the Planet of the Apes $7,800,000 $160

Weekend Box Office – RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Still on Top with $27.5 Million; THE HELP a Strong Second with $25.5 Million

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES slice

So much for a slow-pace in these final weeks of summer.  Along with a strong holdover performance from Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes at number one, the box office was crowded with four new releases: one which seriously over-performed (The Help), one which very seriously underperformed (Glee The 3D Concert Movie) and two which fell somewhere in between.

Title Weekend Total
1 Rise of the Planet of the Apes $27,500,000 $104.8
2 The Help $25,500,000 $35.4
3 Final Destination 5 $18,400,000 $18.4
4 The Smurfs $13,500,000 $101.5
5 30 Minutes or Less $13,000,000 $13
6 Cowboys and Aliens $7,610,000 $81.4
7 Captain America $7,125,000 $146.8
8 Crazy Stupid Love $6,930,000 $55.4
9 Harry Potter 7b $6,875,000 $356.9
10 The Change-Up $6,279,000 $25.7

Richard Jenkins Exclusive Interview LET ME IN

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: September 30th, 2010 at 10:56 am

Richard Jenkins is one of those actors that’s always working.  While never top billing, he can always be counted on to deliver exceptional work no matter what part he plays.  However, over the past few years, it seems like more people are recognizing his talent, as directors such as the Coen Brothers, Adam McKay, the Farrelly Brothers, and now Matt Reeves have cast Jenkins in important parts in their movies.  As a big fan of his work, it’s great to see.  At any rate, I was able to speak with Jenkins about Let Me In and you can read what he had to say after the jump.  We also talked about his other projects.

Finally, by now you’ve probably heard the great buzz on Let Me In, but if you haven’t…Let Me In is one of the best films of the year and absolutely worth your hard earned money.  Absolutely recommended.

Friday Box Office – THE EXPENDABLES Beat Back VAMPIRES SUCK For First Place

Five new movies crammed into theatres on Friday. All of them arrived without much fanfare or anticipation which is why it shouldn’t surprise anyone that none of them managed to make much money either. The clear king of the newbies – with all of $4.4 million – was Fox’s Vampires Suck. The Twilight spoof actually launched on Wednesday and had earned $6.3 million in its first two days in 2,978 locations. That estimate was not far behind the Friday total for The Expendables; though the latter should have no trouble hanging on to its weekend title for a second week in a row. Elsewhere in the top five, the estimates are too close to call between new titles like Lottery Ticket and Piranha 3D and holdover Eat Pray Love. The amounts in question are so small it hardly seems worth arguing over, in any case. Farther down the box office food chain: The Switch placed a dismal number seven (barely ahead of the sequel to Nanny McPhee!) despite the best efforts of Jennifer Aniston to make her fecund film appear ‘controversial.’ Full coverage on the weekend of bad options when you check back tomorrow.

Title Friday Total
1 The Expendables $5,000,000 $53.3
2 Vampires Suck $4,400,000 $10.7
3 Lottery Ticket $3,800,000 $3.8
4 Eat Pray Love $3,700,000 $38.8
5 Piranha 3D $3,600,000 $3.6

Weekend Box Office – THE EXPENDABLES Take Number One with $35 Million

If conventional wisdom says that Sylvester Stallone and Julia Roberts are has-beens, than someone clearly forgot to tell their audiences. Both stars are looking like winners today – especially Sylvester Stallone and his oldies action-hero reunion tour, otherwise known as The Expendables.

Title Weekend Total
1 The Expendables $35,035,000 $35
2 Eat Pray Love $23,700,000 $23.7
3 The Other Guys $18,000,000 $70.5
4 Inception $11,370,000 $248.5
5 Scott Pilgrim vs. the World $10,525,000 $10.5
6 Despicable Me $6,760,000 $221.5
7 Step Up 3D $6,620,000 $21.5
8 Salt $6,350,000 $103.5
9 Dinner for Schmucks $6,316,000 $58.8
10 Cats & Dogs 2 $4,075,000 $35.1

Friday Box Office – THE EXPENDABLES Tops with $13.5 Million; EAT, PRAY LOVE Second; SCOTT PILGRIM Fourth with $4.7 Million

With a little something for everyone (with the possible exception of clinically depressed toddlers) one of late summer’s more fan-driven weekends at the box office got underway on Friday. The Expendables, the film with probably the deepest bench of supporters, came in first with an estimated $13.5 million from 3,270 locations. That was the point when Sylvester Stallone convinced 10 well-loved action stars to appear in his R-rated action extravaganza. The Expendables is now on track to bring in around $35 million this weekend, or over 80% of its reported budget. Fans of Julia Roberts (yes, they’re still out there) and Oprah’s Book Club were no less anxious to see how Eat, Pray Love would play. Sony’s adaptation of the popular memoir came in second with an estimated $9 million from 3,082 locations. Finally, fans of Canadian graphic novels, director Edgar Wright and Michael Cera – my people – have been following the progress of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World for more than a year now. Unfortunately, my people are few in number. Scott Pilgrim earned just $4.7 million on Friday from its 2,818 locations – 60% of what Kick-Ass brought in on its first day back in April. We’ll have full details on the weekend of battling genres tomorrow.

Title Friday Total
1 The Expendables $13,500,000 $13.5
2 Eat, Pray Love $9,000,000 $9
3 The Other Guys $5,700,000 $58.2
4 Scott Pilgrim $4,700,000 $4.7
5 Inception $3,400,000 $240.5

Ryan Murphy Interview GLEE; Co-Creator Reveals Tons of Season 2 Info and Provides Updates on His Next Two TV Series and EAT PRAY LOVE

by Christina Radish    Posted: August 5th, 2010 at 5:23 pm

In just one season, the hit television musical Glee has become a cultural phenomenon, inspiring students to join their school Glee clubs and spawning a merchandise line, which includes soundtracks and original fiction novels. There was even a concert tour, featuring the popular young stars of the series.

At the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour to promote the upcoming second season, premiering on September 21st, producer/director Ryan Murphy, who co-created the show with Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk, gave tons of insight about what’s to be expected when the show returns, including details about the Britney Spears episode, a Rocky Horror episode for Halloween, guest starring appearances from Susan Boyle and Javier Bardem, his desire to get Baz Lurhrmann to direct an episode and what’s in store for Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), the character that everyone loves to hate.

He also talked about his upcoming feature film Eat Pray Love, due out in theaters on August 13th, and the fact that he’s working on developing two new television series – one a musical comedy for Kristin Chenoweth and the other a dark procedural. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

THE EXPENDABLES “Call to Arms” Trailer

The Expendables latest trailer came out a few days ago so we’re a bit late posting this, but we pretty much had to because it’s amazing.  It will remind you why it is your duty as an action fan to see this movie.  This newest trailer is a call to arms for men to take back the box office in the name of “the only men they’re allowed to love.”  The Expendables, which was directed and co-written by star Sylvester Stallone, is opening on August 13th against the Julia Roberts drama Eat, Pray, Love, and like the trailer says, “if this movie loses to Eat, Pray, Love, you don’t deserve to be a man.”  I’m not even a man, and I almost feel like I won’t even deserve to live if I don’t see this movie.

Javier Bardem Will “Rock the House” on GLEE

And you thought John Stamos was a big get for Glee.  Oscar-winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) will join Stamos next season in the halls of McKinley High as a rock star who befriends Artie — in fact, it was his idea.  Glee creator Ryan Murphy moonlighted as the writer/director of this Eat, Pray, Love, which features Mr. Bardem alongside star Julia Roberts.  The Spaniard reportedly devoured the first season in Glee, and took advantage of his inside connection to land a guest gig on the high school musical.  Bardem remarked,

“We’re going to rock the house.  We’re going to do some heavy metal — Spanish heavy metal, which is the worst.” [EW]

Once you factor in that the Artie-centric “Wheels” is quite possibly the very best hour the show has produced, this sounds like a can’t-miss episode.  Season two of Glee will air Tuesdays at 8/7c starting in September.

SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD Release Date vs. THE EXPENDABLES vs. Julia Roberts

slice_scott_pilgrim_vs_world_movie_image_michael_cera_01.jpg

Universal has announced their 2010 slate of films and with it we now have a date for Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: August 13th.  The tail-end of the summer is a pretty strong position even though the biggest (read: most expensive) films of the year come at the beginning of May and the first and second weeks of July.  August dodges those juggernauts and understands that a good movie, well-marketed, with positive word-of-mouth can get overcome blockbuster fatigue.  I’m not sure how much of a crowd Cera can draw (the verdict seems to be he can only do one character, but I disagree with that opinion), but it’s a stacked cast with a fun premise, and it’s from the co-writer/director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

But Scott Pilgrim will have other opponents than the world on August 13th.  The massive chick-draw of Julia Roberts in Eat, Pray, Love isn’t a threat, but Sylvester Stallone’s B-movie apocalypse The Expendables could provide some competition.  My concern for that film is that it’s irony for the sake of irony (see: Snakes on a Plane).  Perhaps Stallone has made a good movie, but it will be interesting to see which flick comes out on top.  I hope it’s the one that doesn’t star the guy from Over the Top.

Hit the jump for the official synopsis for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World:

In their sneak preview of 2010 movies, the LA Times has new images from Christopher Nolan’s Inception starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page, Season of the Witch starring Nicolas Cage and Nicolas Cage’s ridiculous hair extensions, male soul-destroyer Eat, Pray, Love starring Julia Roberts, Oliver Stone’s continued quest for relevance, Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps starring Shia LaBeouf and Michael Douglas; and plenty of other films including Killers, Warrior and a good helping of images we’ve already seen from other films.  We’ve included the new ones along with a brief synopsis for each after the jump.

Javier Bardem Will EAT, PRAY, LOVE with Julia Roberts and Richard Jenkins

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 7th, 2009 at 10:37 pm

bardem_roberts_jenkins_collage_eat_pray_love_01.jpgAfter a long spiritual journey, wouldn’t you like to be rewarded with your very own Javier Bardem?  That’s what Julia Roberts is getting as Bardem has just signed on to play Felipe, the man author Elizabeth Gilbert (Roberts) meets and falls in love with on the final leg of a journey of self-discovery that began with the end of her marriage, all of which she chronicled in her book “Eat, Pray, Love” which is on the nightstand of every living woman on the planet.  I tried reading it once but I opened it to the first page and was hit with the error message: “Must have vagina installed to continue reading book.”

The great Richard Jenkins will also be in the flick but you don’t get him at the end of your spiritual journey because he looks like Richard  Jenkins and Javier Bardem looks like Javier Bardem.  Instead, according to Variety, Jenkins plays a Texan whom Gilbert befriends at an Indian ashram.  While I’m always happy to see Jenkins land a major role (and make no mistake: this is the biggest chick flick since “Sex and the City”), this thing could be a major disaster with Ryan Murphy at the helm since the guy loves to pummel audiences both with his show “Nip/Tuck” and his unwatchable adaptation of “Running with Scissors”.
