Even with Saturday’s family trade and higher ticket prices, Disney’s 3D re-issue of Beauty and the Beast could not catch Contraband this weekend. From its 2,863 locations Universal’s R-rated drama took in an estimated $24.1 million – a figure well above early expectations for the Mark Wahlberg vehicle.  The other BIG news is the changing fortunes of last weekend’s number one film, The Devil Inside.  Estimates have taken the film from number six – down to number eleven – and back up to number seven all within an hour.  We’re hoping to get it right this with this one but, keep in mind, it’s all estimates until Monday morning…

Title Weekend Total
1 Contraband $24,100,000 $24.1
2 Beauty and the Beast 3D $18,490,000 $18.4
3 Mission: Impossible 4 $11,500,000 $186.7
4 Joyful Noise $11,345,000 $11.3
5 Sherlock Holmes 2 $8,410,000 $170
6 The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo $6,800,000 $87.9
7 The Devil Inside $7,900,000 $46.2
8 Alvin and the Chipmunks 3 $5,800,000 $118.7
9 War Horse $5,600,000 $65.7
10 The Iron Lady $5,386,000 $5.9

Friday Box Office – THE RITE Debuts in First with $5.1 Million; THE MECHANIC Third with $3.5 Million

Bringing a depressingly down-trending month to a close, two new features debuted on Friday – neither of which seems capable of breaking the box office out of its January doldrums.  Warner Brothers’ The Rite came in first on Friday with $5.1 million from its 2,985 locations.  That is less than Mel Gibson’s Edge of Darkness debuted to at this time last year, though I’m sure snow-fatigue on the beleaguered East Coast is at least partially to blame.  The PG-13 thriller starring Anthony Hopkins has a chance to stay on top through the three day weekend with a projected take of $15 million.  The excellent 39% hold of No Strings Attached, however, may mean that last weekend’s top title is in for a second week at number one.  CBS Film’s The Mechanic opened in third place on Friday with $3.5 million and is not expected to top ten million by Sunday.  We’ll have full details and analysis tomorrow.

Title Friday Total
1 The Rite $5,100,000 $5.1
2 No Strings Attached $4,400,000 $30.4
3 The Mechanic $3,500,000 $3.5
4 The Green Hornet $2,900,000 $70.2
5 The King’s Speech $2,800,000 $63.9

EDGE OF DARKNESS Blu-ray Review

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: May 14th, 2010 at 8:35 am

Edge of Darkness movie image Mel Gibson slice

Mel Gibson got sloppy drunk in a bar and when he got arrested for a D.U.I. he started making inappropriate comments. That incident was made public and all the bad things suspected about Gibson were confirmed. He had had a crazy man beard, hadn’t acted since 2002, and made anti-Semitic and sexist comments. By that point he was nowhere near The Passion of the Christ or Lethal Weapon. So he did what anyone in Hollywood does when that happens: he disappeared for a while and came back doing a variation on what people loved him for, with a mix of pathos in there for good measure. In Martin Campbell’s Edge of Darkness Gibson plays a cop whose daughter is killed in front of him, and so he goes on the hunt for revenge, and unravels a conspiracy. My review of Edge of Darkness on Blu-ray after the jump.

Weekend Box Office – With Another $30 Million AVATAR Makes It Seven Weeks in a Row

You probably didn’t need me to tell you this morning that Avatar is still the number one movie in America… and in the Universe, as far as I know. With all the talk about Mel Gibson’s cinematic return in Edge of Darkness, it was never realistic to believe that an aging action star would derail Avatar‘s domination – not when the film is still pulling in numbers usually reserved for an opening week well into its second month in theatres.

Title Weekend Total
1 Avatar $30,000,000 $594.4
2 Edge of Darkness $17,120,000 $17.1
3 When in Rome $12,065,000 $12
4 Tooth Fairy $10,000,000 $26.1
5 Book of Eli $8,770,000 $74.3
6 Legion $6,800,000 $28.6
7 Lovely Bones $4,735,000 $38
8 Sherlock Holmes $4,510,000 $197.5
9 Alvin & the Chipmunks 2 $4,000,000 $209.2
10 It’s Complicated $3,720,000 $104

Friday Box Office – Mel Gibson and EDGE OF DARKNESS Pale Beside AVATAR

Another week, another record-shattering haul for James Cameron’s Avatar. After becoming the highest-grossing film of all-time at the worldwide box office last Monday, Avatar continued its occupation of the top spot on Friday with an estimated $7.5 million. Weekend projections are for just under $30 million which means that it will be another week or so before Avatar can overtake Titanic‘s $600.8 million domestic record. The return of Mel Gibson in Edge of Darkness was good for an estimated $5.7 million which – considering that the guy’s been MIA for the better part of a decade – isn’t so good at all. Even worse was in store for Disney’s When in Rome. The romantic comedy starring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel opened to just $4.3 million on Friday, though I have a feeling they can’t blame that one on the Avatar-effect. Full weekend estimates when you check back tomorrow.

Title Friday Total
1 Avatar $7,500,000 $572
2 Edge of Darkness $5,700,000 $5.7
3 When in Rome $4,380,000 $4.3
4 The Book of Eli $2,480,000 $68.1
5 Tooth Fairy $2,250,000 $18.4

EDGE OF DARKNESS Review

A better title for Edge of Darkness would be Mel Gibson’s Return to Acting.  Gibson’s performance is the showcase of Edge and almost everything else falls by the wayside.  It’s almost a challenge to Gibson: we’re going to give you tone-deaf direction, a monotonous script, only one valuable supporting performance, and you have to convince people you can still lead a movie even though everyone thinks you’re a crazy anti-semite.

In all this haze, some may have forgotten one very important fact: the guy can act.  He’s captivating, energetic, and he holds every frame of Edge of Darkness together (although Ray Winstone lends a valuable assist whenever he’s on screen).  Without Gibson, the film could not succeed.  With Gibson, it still doesn’t succeed, but at least it’s not painful.  The way director Martin Campbell kills people in this movie-now that’s painful.

Director Martin Campbell Exclusive Interview EDGE OF DARKNESS

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: January 28th, 2010 at 1:26 pm

Martin Campbell image (2).jpgOpening tomorrow is director Martin Campbell’s (Casino Royale) Edge of Darkness.  A GK Films Production based on the BAFTA Award-winning BBC miniseries of the same name (which Campbell directed), Edge of Darkness is about a homicide detective whose daughter is gunned down on his front steps.  When he starts to look into what really happened, he uncovers not only her secret life, but a corporate cover-up and government collusion that attracts an agent tasked with cleaning up the evidence.  The film stars Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, Bojana Novakovic and Shawn Roberts and it’s been written by William Monahan (The Departed) and Andrew Bovell (Lantana), based on the original television series written by Troy Kennedy Martin.

To help promote the film, I got to do an exclusive interview with director Martin Campbell. We talked about why he wanted to revisit the material, working with Mel Gibson, filming in Boston (and why he didn’t have any Dunkin Donuts in the movie), deleted scenes, and, of course, we talked about his next film, Green Lantern.  Hit the jump to read what he had to say:

Exclusive: Director Martin Campbell on GREEN LANTERN; Says it’s More IRON MAN Than BATMAN BEGINS and More!

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: January 18th, 2010 at 10:50 pm

Martin Campbell Green Lantern image (1).jpg

A few days ago, I got to sit down with director Martin Campbell for an exclusive interview on his new film Edge of Darkness (which I really liked).  While I’ll be posting our full conversation next week, I wanted to get what he said about Green Lantern online now as everyone is talking about it.

Since all the big casting has been announced, I decided to use my limited time to discuss what kind of tone he would be going for and is there any chance Green Lantern might be in 3D. If you were wondering if Green Lantern would be like Batman Begins or Iron Man, here’s Campbell’s answer:

“It will be much more in the tone of Iron Man. It’s got to be. Certainly not Batman Begins, which is a pretty dark movie. No, he’s the Hal Jordan character who’s the sort of shoot from the hip, irresponsible kind of cocky test pilot if you will. In fact, the character seems to be the least likely to be chosen as Green Lantern.  Well, of course that’s the fun of it. So no, it’ll be much more like Iron Man. So it’ll have one foot in reality if you see what I mean.”

He also told me Green Lantern is going to another planet!  More after the jump:

Mel Gibson Interview; Talks MAD MAX 4 and He’s Using Old Norse in His Viking Movie With Leonardo DiCaprio

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: January 16th, 2010 at 4:15 pm

slice_mel_gibson_vikings_leonardo_dicaprio_01.jpg

Earlier today I attended a press conference with Mel Gibson as he’s out promoting his new film Edge of Darkness (which I really liked).  During the Q&A, he talked about his involvement in Mad Max 4 and he gave us some new details on his Viking movie.

Regarding Mad Max 4, Gibson said, “At one point I was involved and it fell to bits and then this and that…so now it’s probably gone through a lot of changes and I can’t wait to see it.”  Does that mean he’s definitely not in it?  Hard to say.  I wouldn’t be surprised if he still does a cameo of some kind.

But the big news came when he was talking about his Viking movie.  While we reported about a month ago that he was developing a Viking film with screenwriter William Monahan (The Departed) and it was going to star Leonardo DiCaprio, what we didn’t know is that he’s going for absolute realism!  When we asked what language would be used in the film, Gibson told us:

“I think it’s going to be English – the English that would have been spoken back then – and Old Norse.  Whatever the 9th century had to offer.  I’m going to give you real.”

New Posters for KICK-ASS, DATE NIGHT, and EDGE OF DARKNESS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 17th, 2009 at 12:05 pm

slice_kick-ass_date_night_edge_darkess_movie_posters_001.jpg

Courtesy of IMPAwards, the world’s best movie poster site ever, we have three new posters for Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass, Shawn Levy’s Date Night, and Martin Campbell’s Edge of Darkness.  The Kick-Ass poster feature Chloe Moretz as “Hit-Girl” and completes the set of the previously released posters.  The Date Night poster is so plain that they just took an image we’ve already seen, slapped a gray background and the movie’s titled on it, and went about their business.  Still, people love Steve Carell and Tina Fey so what more do you really need?  And finally, the poster for Edge of Darkness tells us that few escape justice, none escape vengeance, and Mel Gibson can’t escape motion blur. [Update -- This poster was not a finalized version of the alternate poster and we have removed it at the request of the studio]

Graham King on Producing and Future Projects Like THE TOURIST, EDGE OF DARKNESS, RANGO, More

by Sara Wayland    Posted: December 6th, 2009 at 8:13 pm

Graham King image.jpgA native of the United Kingdom, Graham King has emerged as a formidable producer of both major motion pictures and independent features. His independent production company, GK Films, launched in 2007 with business partner Tim Headington and the soon to be released period film The Young Victoria was the first film produced under this new banner.

Since then, GK Films completed shooting the thriller Edge of Darkness, based on the BBC mini-series of the same name and starring Mel Gibson, which will be released in January 2010. Other GK Films projects in various stages of production or development are The Tourist with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, Rum Diary starring Johnny Depp, the crime drama London Boulevard starring Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley, the children’s book adaptation The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Ben Affleck’s latest directorial feature The Town and the animated feature Rango, featuring the voice of Johnny Depp.

While doing press for The Young Victoria, the very busy producer talked about all of his current and upcoming projects. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

First Trailer and Poster for Mel Gibson’s EDGE OF DARKNESS – Written by William Monahan and Directed by Martin Campbell

Edge of Darkness movie image Mel Gibson slice.jpg

Director Martin Campbell’s (“Casino Royale”) “Edge of Darkness” has finally got a trailer and if you’re a fan of Mel Gibson kicking ass, I’m pretty sure you’re going to like this movie. The other reason this film should be on your radar is William Monahan (“The Departed”) wrote the screenplay and the film takes place in Boston. The last time Monahan wrote a Boston based movie, I think we can all agree it turned out well.

The premise of “Edge of Darkness” is Mel Gibson plays a detective and after the sudden death of his activist daughter, he tries to find out why she was killed. He uncovers more than he bargained for. The film also stars Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, Bojana Novakovic, and Shawn Roberts. Watch the trailer after the jump. Be warned: Mel is trying to pull off a Boston accent. I think it works.
