With Max Landis’ movie Chronicle opening in theaters this weekend, you might be wondering to yourself just how the young writer became interested in superheroic origins or why he chose to give one of his protagonists supervillain tendencies. Well it just so happens that we’ve come across a short directed and narrated by Landis himself that might explain some things. In The Death and Return of Superman, Landis (along with some famous friends like Elijah Wood, Mandy Moore, Ron Howard, Simon Pegg and Chris Hardwick) takes viewers through an NSFW recap of the infamous DC comic series that saw the fall (and rise) of the last son of Krypton. Hit the jump to check it out.

While at the FX portion of TCA Winter Press Tour, on behalf of his comedy series Wilfred, actor Elijah Wood sat down with Collider for an exclusive interview to talk about the Season 2 return, and what fans can expect after the dramatic Season 1 finale. We will run that portion of the interview closer to the show’s June 23rd return date, but in the meantime, we wanted to share what he had to say about his return to New Zealand for his role in The Hobbit.
Even though he only worked on the film a small amount, Wood was there for a month, which gave him time to hang out in Wellington, New Zealand, catch up with old friends and meet a lot of the new cast members. As a result, he was very excited to see the trailer and thought it was awesome. He also talked about the experience of working with 3D cameras that shoot 48 frames a second, and the advancement in technology allowing them to watch the playback in 3D while they were still on set. When the Walt Disney Company and Marvel announced their joint partnership a few years ago, both sides knew that there were some incredible creative opportunities and a whole lot of coin to be made in the years ahead. That more or less sums up what the Disney Channels’ President and Chief Creative Officer Gary Marsh said during a presentation at TCA. While I’m paraphrasing, of course, Marsh did go on to announce the next step in their partnership: a block of Marvel-themed series on Disney XD which will be called Marvel Universe, featuring a new collaboration, Ultimate Spider-Man. The new iteration will be the first time that Spidey, voiced by Drake Bell (Superhero Movie), won’t be going it along, as he’ll be joined by White Tiger, Iron Fist, Power Man and Nova, all of Nick Fury’s S.H.I.E.L.D. While that’s good news for fans of the web-head, Marsh also talked about the premiere of their anticipated animated series, TRON: Uprising. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

The adorable singing and dancing penguins of Antarctica are back for Happy Feet Two. In the 3D animated feature, Erik, the tiny son of master tap dancer Mumble (voiced by Elijah Wood) and the vocally gifted Gloria (voiced by Pink), runs away and encounters The Mighty Sven (Hank Azaria), the only penguin who can fly. When violent shifts in the glacial landscape threaten the survival of the entire Emperor penguin community, Mumble and Erik must rally all creatures, both great and small, to save them.
During a press conference to discuss the film, voice actors Elijah Wood, Robin Williams (who voices both Ramon and Lovelace), Hank Azaria and Common (who makes his animation debut as Seymour) talked about the joy of getting to work together for the recording process, developing the voice they wanted to use for their characters, and being able to improvise and bounce things off each other. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

Elijah Wood shined in the debut season of FX’s Wilfred, but now the actor is taking on hallucinations of a decidedly darker sort. The actor has nabbed himself the lead in the indie remake of the 1980 serial killer pic Maniac. Deadline confirms (as first reported by Bloody Disgusting) that Wood will play a serial killer who works at a shop that sells antique mannequins, and spends his spare time stalking prey on the internet and planning out his kills. The character suffers hallucinations that take him back to when his mother abused him, and he gains a sense of revenge against his mother each time he kills a victim. Nora Arnezeder (Safe House) also stars, as reported by BD. Franck Khalfoun (P2) is directing the indie, and Alexandre Aja (Piranha 3D) and Gregory Lavasseur (The Hills Have Eyes) are onboard to produce.
Wood is set to reprise his role as Frodo throughout the year-long production of The Hobbit, and recently completed work in the dramedy Celeste and Jesse Forever. His voice talents will be on display with the release of Happy Feet Two on November 18th.

A new trailer has gone online for George Miller’s Happy Feet Two. I know I’m not the target audience for these movies but I find penguins adorable. Theoretically, I should be willing to give the Happy Feet flicks the benefit of the doubt on that alone. But the animators for the Happy Feet films made a serious error when they decided to give the penguins human eyes. The characters all exist in a weird middle ground between trying to have animated expressions and still remain realistic-looking. The movies are made worse by the having penguins squeak out hip-hop songs. But none of that matters because the movie will probably make hundreds of millions of dollars. Hooray.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer, which doesn’t tell you what the movie is about (Mumble and his son have to find an escape route when the penguin population is covered in ice). The film features the voices of Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Hank Azaria, Alecia Moore (P!nk), Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Sofia Vergara, Hugo Weaving, Richard Carter, Common, Magda Szubanski, and Anthony LaPagila. Happy Feet Two opens in 3D on November 18th.

Thousands of film geeks, genre-film enthusiasts, and weirdoes have descended upon the Alamo Drafthouse’s South Lamar location for a week-long celebration of the weirdest cinema in the world: Fantastic Fest 2011. In its seventh year, Fantastic Fest has proven—in just 24 hours—that it’s the coolest film festival Austin has to offer (and if you’re at all familiar with the film festivals on offer in Austin, you know that’s saying something). How’d day one go? I’ve got capsule reviews of Michael, Borderline, a day-one diary, and video of Tim League and Elijah Wood introducing The Human Centipede 2 after the jump, folks.

Atlas Independent is new to the filmmaking game, but they’re off to a good start with the supporting cast for their first feature Revenge for Jolly!. Brian Petsos stars as the owner of a dog who died under suspicious circumstances. He and his cousin “follow a series of clues in an attempt to track down the dog’s murderer, leaving a path of destruction in their wake.” Oscar Isaac plays the cousin; Elijah Wood, Adam Brody, Ryan Phillippe, Kristen Wiig, David Rasche, Kevin Corrigan, Garret Dillahunt, Bobby Moynihan, and Gillian Jacobs also star. That’s a cast I trust with this absurdist premise.
Director Chadd Harbold wrapped the sub-$10 million production in August. For more info on Revenge for Jolly! and Atlas Independent’s mission statement, read the full press release after the jump.

Based on the critically acclaimed Australian series of the same name, the FX dark comedy series Wilfred has struck a chord with audiences, far beyond the expectations of everyone involved, and already earned itself a second season. The half-hour shows follows Ryan (Elijah Wood), a young man struggling unsuccessfully to make his way in the world. In a deep depression, he forms a unique friendship with Wilfred (Jason Gann), his neighbor’s canine pet who everyone else sees as just a dog, but who Ryan sees a crude Australian guy in a cheap dog suit.
After leading Ryan through a wide array of trials and tribulations, and the wildest of adventures, Season 1 comes to a close on September 8th, bringing up more questions about Ryan’s mental state than ever before. Co-stars Elijah Wood and Jason Gann (who is also co-executive producer) talked about the Season 1 cliffhanger, where they can take things in Season 2, what they would like to include on the DVD, the possibility of seeing things through Wilfred’s eyes, the struggles they’d like to see Ryan overcome, and how gratifying the success of the show has been. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

Following up on the poster we saw earlier today, Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for Happy Feet Two. The new trailer reveals more about the story than the first, but still makes time for the snippets of the adorable penguin versions of “Mama Said Knock You Out” and “Sexy Back.” About that story: “Mumble (Elijah Wood) and Gloria (Pink) now have a son of their own, Erik (EG Daily), who is struggling to find his own particular talents in the Emperor Penguin world.”
Robin Williams, Sofia Vergara, Hank Azaria, and Brad Pitt also provide voices in the sequel directed by George Miller. Happy Feet 2 is slated for 3D release on November 18. Watch the trailer after the break.

The half-hour, live-action comedy Wilfred is about a young man named Ryan (Elijah Wood), who is struggling unsuccessfully to make his way in the world until he forms a unique friendship with Wilfred (Jason Gann), his neighbor’s canine pet. While everyone else sees Wilfred as just a dog, Ryan sees a crude yet always honest Australian guy in a cheap dog suit. As their peculiar relationship develops and they find themselves in some rather outrageous situations, Wilfred shows Ryan how to overcome his fears and embrace the world around him.
During a recent interview to promote the show’s premiere on FX, actor Elijah Wood talked about why he decided to do a TV series, how he feels that honesty and truth are a solid base for any comedy, why he enjoys playing a character that’s so broken, and how he’s attracted to scripts that he responds to, on a gut level. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Back in December, we reported that Orlando Bloom might reprise his role as Elven sharpshooter Legolas for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. Today on his official Facebook page, Jackson confirmed that he had Legolas bow:
Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas. I’m excited to announce today that we’ll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more. I’m thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look older—and he doesn’t! I guess that’s why he makes such a wonderful elf.
Bloom is the latest Lord of the Rings cast member to join The Hobbit. While Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Elrond (Hugo Weaving), and Gollum (Andy Serkis) actually appear in J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel, Jackson has apparently made room for Legolas, Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), old Bilbo (Ian Holm), and Frodo (Elijah Wood). Hit the jump for the synopsis of the novel. The two-part 3D film is set for December 2012 and December 2013.

We’ve got a few casting stories for you tonight. First up, John Cho is the latest actor to join the cast of Len Wiseman’s Total Recall remake. The film stars Colin Farrell, Bryan Cranston, the recently confirmed Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Bielm, and late addition Bill Nighy. EW reports that Cho is on board to play McClane, the rep for the company that tries to mess with Farrell’s character’s mind. Cranston is playing the villain, with Ethan Hawke set to show up in a cameo. Total Recall hits theaters August 3rd 2012.
Additionally, Colin Hanks has signed on for the Paramount comedy My Mother’s Curse. The film stars Seth Rogen, Barbara Streisand and Chuck star Yvonne Strahovski. The story centers on an inventor (Rogen) who invites his mother along for a cross-country trip while he attempts to sell his new product and connect with a long lost love. THR reports that Hanks will play the husband of Strahovski, Rogen’s high school sweetheart. Anne Fletcher (The Proposal) will direct from a script by Dan Fogelman (Tangled). Hit the jump for the casting news of Elijah Wood in Celeste and Jesse Forever.

The first trailer has landed for Happy Feet 2, the sequel to 2007′s best animated feature Oscar winner, and it has to be said, it is pretty grin inducing. As to be expected, it features a host of cute and cuddly penguins bopping about and tapping their (happy) feet, and in this case rapping to Justin Timberlake’s “Sexy Back”, albeit cunningly reworded “Fluffy Back” – think of the children! Happy Feet 2 carries some heavy weight vocal talent, including Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Hank Azaria, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Sofia Vergara among a ton of others, and Mad Max‘s George Miller is returning to direct. It opens November 18, 2011 in the US, followed by a later release of December 2, 2011 in the UK. Hit the jump for the trailer and official synopsis.

The Beastie Boys short film Fight for Your Right – Revisited premiered last night on VH1 (censored) and Comedy Central (uncensored) and now the uncensored version has made its way online. The short stars Elijah Wood, Seth Rogen, and Danny McBride as Licensed to Ill-era Ad-Rock, Mike D, and MCA, respectively. While the trailer hinted that there would be some semblance of a plot where the trio has a dance contest against their future selves (played by Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, and Jack Black), the majority of the film is just the boys making mischief. While the short has a fun mix of the Beastie Boys both honoring and mocking themselves, there are so many cameos that it feels less like a thoughtful reflection and more like a list of famous people who want to pay that tribute to the influential hip-hop trio.
Hit the jump to check out the uncensored short and judge for yourself. The Beastie Boys new album, ot Hot Sauce Committee Part Two hits stores on May 3rd.
