Ellen Page Joins Brit Marling and Alexander Skarsgard in THE EAST

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: September 29th, 2011 at 12:44 pm

Zal Batmanglij’s The East has added some star power to its ranks.  Variety reports that Ellen Page has joined rising stars Brit Marling (Another Earth) and Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood) in the dramatic thriller.  The story centers on an undercover agent (Marling, who also co-wrote the film) from a private contracting firm who is tasked with protecting corporations from eco-terrorists and anti-business extremists.  When she is sent to investigate an anarchist organization known as “The East”, she finds herself falling for its leader (Skarsgard).  Page will play Izzy, a member of The East who is the leader’s former lover and is now jealous of Marling’s character.  The Oscar-nominated actress wrapped shooting on Woody Allen’s Bop Decameron this past summer.

Batmanglij and Marling previously teamed-up for the acclaimed drama Sound of My Voice, which was picked up by Fox Searchlight (who are also behind The East) following the buzz it received on the festival circuit earlier this year.  I’m getting pretty miffed at the studio for being silent on their release plans for the film, especially since it looks like The East covers similar ground in exploring cults.

Set Photo Roundup: Len Wiseman’s TOTAL RECALL Remake and Woody Allen’s BOP DECAMERON

by Jason Barr    Posted: July 27th, 2011 at 3:22 pm

Normally, I’m not the biggest champion of set photos. I just don’t understand what they prove beyond the fact that “Movie X” is indeed filming in “Location A” with “Talent C.” Nevertheless, when you give them a little context, I tend to care a little more. For example, director Len Wiseman (Underworld) told Steve at Comic-Con that his Total Recall remake was in the process of shooting a 15-day hovercraft chase scene (for comparison sake, chase scenes and other comparable action sequences generally take around 5 days to film). With that information in mind, I was actually kind of excited to see some images from that shoot pop up online.

In addition to the Total Recall images, we also have some pics from the Rome set of writer/director Woody Allen’s Bop Decameron. Granted, those pics fall closer to the somewhat bland example outlined above, but fans of Alec Baldwin, Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page, and Greta Gerwig may still find something worth checking out after the jump. Starring Colin Farrell, Bryan Cranston, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, and Ethan Hawke, Total Recall hits theaters on August 2nd. Allen’s Bop Decameron is currently eyeing an unspecified 2012 release.

Full Cast for Woody Allen’s Next Film THE BOP DECAMERON Announced, Includes Jesse Eisenberg, Alec Baldwin and Ellen Page

Midnight in Paris is the best film Woody Allen has made in years. Whimsical, delightful and enchanting, it’s also one of the best times you’ll have at the movies all year. It’s this charm that I’m hoping Allen maintains for his next film The Bop Decameron, for which the full cast was just announced. Allen himself described this next effort as a “broad comedy,” and it’s set to shoot in Rome next month.

The cast for The Bop Decameron includes Allen himself, Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Penélope Cruz, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig and Ellen Page, with Alison Pill, Alessandra Mastronardi and more set to co-star. Hit the jump to read the full press release, which includes the full cast listing.

Woody Allen Discusses His Next Film, Return to Acting

Woody Allen may never stop making films. Long after he is dead, I am sure we will still be treated to summer releases of his newest film that was shot, edited, and stored in a vault somewhere. Having just arrived from the opening of Midnight in Paris at the Cannes Film Festival, he decided to round up some New York press and talk about his next untitled film project. Yes, he is promoting his next film before his current one has even released theatrically. Even the casting for the film seems nearly done, with Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page, Penelope Cruz, and Alec Baldwin all set to star alongside the recently announced Roberto Benigni and Allen himself. Hit the jump for more on the untitled film’s subject matter, which Allen has described as, “an out-and-out comedy,” and what role he will play.

Woody Allen to Co-Star in His Next Film alongside Roberto Benigni

Woody Allen has cast two more actors in his next untitled film.  One actor is a familiar face in Woody Allen’s films: Woody Allen.  Allen hasn’t co-starred in one of his movies since 2006′s Scoop, but he sounds pretty pleased with the decision to join the picture, which he tells USA Today is “comic picture, an out-and-out comedy.”  Also, if you thought you were done with Roberto Benigni, you were wrong because Allen says the Oscar-winning actor is also in the film.  After coming to the attention of mainstream American audiences in Life is Beautiful, Benigni thought it would be a good idea to adapt Pinocchio and then play Pinocchio and that no one would be creeped out by the prospect of a middle-aged man playing a young boy.

Allen and Benigni join previously-announced cast members Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page, Penelope Cruz, and Alec Baldwin.  Allen says he’s still casting for the film, which shoots in Rome this summer.  His new film, Midnight in Paris, will open the Cannes Film Festival and hit theaters in the US on May 20th.

Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page, and Alec Baldwin Join Penelope Cruz in Untitled Woody Allen Film

Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page, and Alec Baldwin are joining Penelope Cruz in Woody Allen’s next feature film.  Variety reports that the film is scheduled to shoot in Rome this summer.  As usual, the plot and title are unknown at this point, but I’m willing to bet that if it’s a drama then the story will revolve around morals and murder, and if it’s a comedy there will be a neurotic Allen-surrogate.  The casting of Eisenberg makes me think it’s the latter.

The untitled film will be the first collaboration with Allen for Eisenberg and Page, but it will be a reunion for Cruz and Baldwin.  Cruz previously starred and won an Oscar for her work in 2008′s Vicky Christina Barcelona while Baldwin co-starred in Allen’s 1990 comedy Alice.  Allen’s new film, Midnight in Paris, opens May 20th.

Ellen Page Video Interview SUPER

With director James Gunn’s superhero flick Super opening this weekend, I recently got to sit down with Ellen Page to talk about how she got involved with the project.  As you might expect from Gunn (Slither, PG-Porn), the film is violent, twisted, and darkly comic.  During the interview, Page talked about the six degrees of Kevin Bacon, what’s her karaoke song, does she have an opinion on the ending of Inception, the violence in Super, upcoming projects like Freeheld (which will be written by Ron Nyswaner) and Stitch and Bitch with Alia Shawkat.

Finally, if you’re a fan of Page, you definitely need to see Super.  The reason I say this is you’ve never seen Page like this.  When I saw Super, she had the entire theater laughing at some of the insane stuff she does on screen.  It was great.  Hit the jump to watch the interview:

New Posters for CARS 2 and SUPER

New posters have been released for Cars 2 and Super.  The poster for Cars 2 is beyond bland, but at least it doesn’t have a character falling into a vat of shit, so I guess I should be grateful for that.  As for the Super posters, I like the flyer-design and how they reference certain crimes (ranging from line-butting to pedophilia) that “heroes” Crimson Bolt (Rainn Wilson) and his sidekick Boltie (Ellen Page) take on.

Hit the jump to check out the posters.  Cars 2 opens in 3D on June 24th.  Super opens April 1st.

SXSW 2011: SUPER Review

A lot of online folks have been giving James Gunn’s Super a hard time because of its obvious similarities to Matthew Vaughan’s Kick-Ass.  It’s true that Gunn’s film– which stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, and a hilarious Kevin Bacon– share more than a few passing similarities, but Super only improves upon the “real-life superhero” sub-genre that Kick-Ass mined so well last year.  What has Gunn done to improve the formula?  Find out after the break.

New Trailer for James Gunn’s SUPER Starring Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page

IFC has released a trailer for James Gunn’s upcoming superhero flick Super.  I like that the trailer has to animate over the language and violence in order to make it viewable for all-ages.  It’s a James Gunn movie and it’s best to expect something violent, twisted, and darkly comic.  Super looks like it’s going to deliver on all three counts and that makes me very excited to see this flick.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Super stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, and Nathan Fillion.  It opens April 1st.

New Posters Released for SUPER Starring Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page, and Disney’s WINNIE THE POOH

New posters have been released for two upcoming films: Super and Winnie the Pooh. Directed by James Gunn (Slither), Super tells the story of an average guy who takes on the persona of “The Crimson Bolt” upon learning that his wife is having an affair. The film stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler and Kevin Bacon. IFC is set to release the film on April 1st.

The “bear of little brain” returns to the big screen in Disney’s Winnie the Pooh. Narrated by John Cleese, the 2D “hand-drawn style” animated film follows Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Rabbit, Piglet, Owl, Kanga and Roo on an all-new adventure to help Christopher Robin. Winnie the Pooh is slated for a July 15th release. Hit the jump to check out both posters.

Warner Bros. Keeping INCEPTION in Oscar-voters’ Minds with “New” Behind-the-Scenes Featurette

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 23rd, 2010 at 3:11 pm

Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight was shut out of the 2008 Oscar race for Best Picture, but with ten slots available for the 2010 nominees, it’s looking likely that his critically-acclaimed box office smash Inception will be getting a nomination.  However, since there are still only five slots for Best Director, there are really only five nominees for Best Picture and then five honorable mentions.  Warner Bros. wants to get Inception on the short list and so they’ve released a “new” behind-the-scenes featurette for the film.  It’s mostly EPK (electronic press kit) footage, but the beginning and end of the featurette are new.  This isn’t so much to encourage people to see the movie (chances are you already have), but to remind Awards voters that Nolan made a remarkable picture.  While all the momentum seems to currently be behind The Social Network, it’s still early enough for other contenders to garner favor.

Hit the jump to check out the featurette.  Inception is available to own on DVD and Blu-ray.

INCEPTION Blu-ray Review

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: December 16th, 2010 at 3:24 pm

Christopher Nolan’s Inception came across as the man’s payout for having directed The Dark Knight, a film that grossed a billion dollars worldwide, recharged the franchise, and is inarguably one of the best superhero movies ever made. His follow-up brought in Leonardo Di Caprio to play Cobb, who works as an “extractor.” His profession is corporate espionage, stealing secrets from successful men through their dreams. Structured in some ways like a heist film (in others like a Bond movie), Cobb is given a “one last mission” situation where instead of stealing, he has to give someone an idea in their dreams. This situation will allow him to finally go home to his family. Supported by the likes of Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Ken Watanabe and Dileep Rao, he’s got a team to take on the hardest job he’s ever done. My review of the Inception Blu-ray follows after the jump.

First Clip from James Gunn’s SUPER

by Jason Barr    Posted: October 20th, 2010 at 10:08 am

The first clip from writer/director James Gunn’s (Slither) superhero parody flick Super is now available online following its world premiere during last night’s 2010 Scream Awards.  Running at almost two minutes, the footage is the same that Gunn and co. debuted at Comic-Con over the summer and is a reminder to all of us that there is, in fact, “no butting in line.”

Super was picked up by IFC Films at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, so we will hopefully be seeing it in theaters sooner rather than later.  To check out Steve’s video review of the film from TIFF, click here.  To see the clip as well as a synopsis, hit the jump.  Super stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, and Nathan Fillion.
