Two new images and set photo from Rian Johnson‘s Looper have gone online.  The futuristic thriller takes place in a world where time travel exists, but is only used on the black market. When the mob wants to kill someone, they send the target 30 years into the past where a contract killer (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) does the dirty work. Things are going smoothly until Gordon-Levitt’s future self (Bruce Willis) is sent into the past to be killed.  As a huge fan of Johnson’s previous films, Brick and The Brothers BloomLooper is easily one of my most-anticipated films of the year, and I’m happy to get a few more glances at the flick.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  The film also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Noah Segan, Piper Perabo, and Jeff DanielsLooper opens on September 28th.

Opening this Friday, April 27th is director Nicholas Stoller’s comedy The Five-Year Engagement.  The film reunites Stoller with his Forgetting Sarah Marshall star Jason Segel and follows a couple (played by Segel and Emily Blunt) through the ups and downs of their extended engagement.  The excellent ensemble cast also includes Chris Pratt, Alison Brie, Rhys Ifans, David Paymer, Mimi Kennedy, Jacki Weaver, Jim Piddock, Kevin Hart, Brian Posehn and Mindy Kaling.  For more on the film here’s the red-band trailer and five clips.

I got to visit the set earlier this year where I previously spoke with Jason Segel and Emily Blunt, but recently I sat down with them again to talk about the film for our partners at Omelete.  During the course of our interview, they talked about improv versus sticking to the script, favorite movies, directors & actors, Brazil, and more.  Hit the jump to watch.

THE FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 26th, 2012 at 2:19 pm

The Cult of Judd Apatow needs to learn that sometimes you have to cut a scene even if it’s funny.  The refusal to learn this lesson has resulted in movies where every scene will get some laughs, but the pacing falls into a rut.  The 40-Year-Old Virgin managed to escape this fate, but writer-director Nicholas Stoller has repeatedly fallen prey to the belief that he can sacrifice pacing for a few more jokes.  It happened in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, it happened in Get Him to the Greek, and it happens in his new film, The Five-Year Engagement.  Apatow has produced all of Stoller’s films and never thrown up a stop sign.  The Five-Year Engagement may be Stoller’s biggest offender to date as the wonderful performances and great humor are constantly at war with a narrative that struggles to move forward even when it’s jumping ahead in time.

The comedy The Five-Year Engagement, from co-writer/director Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him To The Greek) and producer Judd Apatow takes a look at romance in a very real, funny and often awkward way.  When engaged couple Tom (Jason Segel) and Violet (Emily Blunt) keep postponing their wedding, two people who once dreamed of the perfect day just keep spiraling further apart.  Meanwhile, Tom’s best friend Alex (Chris Pratt) spontaneously marries Violet’s quirky sister, Suzie (Alison Brie), and they have two kids, all before Tom and Violet even set a wedding date and the two begin to wonder if their relationship is even right.  For more on the film, here’s the new red-band trailer, 5 clips, and 24 images.

At the film’s press day, co-stars Jason Segel (who is also the film’s co-writer and executive producer) and Emily Blunt talked about telling the story of a romance that is simply about the fact that different people can want different things, the challenges of getting a movie like this made, their shared pet peeve of having two actors matched together in a movie just because they’ve both had successful movies the year before, how this movie ended up not having a puppet, and the scenes and plotlines that were ultimately cut.  Check out what they had to say after the jump:

Red-Band Trailer for THE FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT Starring Jason Segel and Emily Blunt

A red-band trailer for The Five-Year Engagement has gone online.  The film follows Jason Segel and Emily Blunt through the ups and downs of their prolonged engagement.  Segel reteams with Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller on the film, and I’m a big fan of what we’ve seen thus far.  This red-band trailer focuses on some of the dirtier jokes we were expecting from a Judd Apatow-produced comedy, with a fairly great sex scene between Segel and Blunt thrown in for good measure.  It’s also nice to see The 40-Year Old Virgin scene-stealer Kevin Hart back in an Apatow comedy.  I love the ensemble cast that Stoller has put together and I’m excited to watch everyone play off of one another in the finished film.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer, and don’t forget to check out Steve’s set visit coverage including 20 things to know about the film and bunch of on set interviews.  We also posted 24 images and five clips.  The film also stars Chris Pratt, Alison Brie, Rhys Ifans, David Paymer, Mimi Kennedy, Jacki Weaver, Brian Posehn, and Mindy Kaling. The Five-Year Engagement opens on April 27th.

First Trailer for YOUR SISTER’S SISTER Starring Mark Duplass, Emily Blunt, and Rosemarie Dewitt

The first trailer for Your Sister’s Sister has gone online.  The film stars Mark Duplass as a man still mourning his brother’s death who retreats to a cabin on Puget Sound at the behest of his best friend (Emily Blunt).  When he finds Blunt’s sister (Rosemarie Dewitt) at the cabin, the two sleep together after a tequila fueled night, only to wake up and find that Blunt has decided to join them at the cabin.  Though the premise could easily devolve into a by-the-numbers romantic comedy, director Lynn Shelton looks to have crafted a thoughtful drama that plays out the scenario in the most human, and realistic, of fashions.  I’m a big fan of the cast here, and Matt enjoyed the film at Sundance, so I’m looking forward to checking it out.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film opens on June 15th.  If you missed them, you can also check out Steve’s interviews with Duplass and Dewitt at Sundance.

Emily Blunt in Talks to Join Tom Cruise in ALL YOU NEED IS KILL; Is a Top Contender for THE THIN MAN Opposite Johnny Depp

Warner Bros. is close to setting a female lead opposite Tom Cruise in the sci-fi thriller All You Need Is KillEmily Blunt is in talks to pair up with Cruise in the film, which centers on a soldier in a war against aliens who finds himself reliving his last day over and over after being killed.  In the Source Code-ish story, Cruise’s character becomes a better soldier as a result of the time loop, as he’s essentially in an unending series of rounds of Call of Duty multiplayer.  If I’ve learned anything from COD, it’s that lots and lots of practice makes me slightly less sucky.  Hit the jump for more on All You Need Is Kill and the prospects of Blunt teaming up with Johnny Depp.

After posting the trailer for director Rian Johnson’s Looper yesterday, some of you may have been left with questions about the time-traveling assassin flick.  As luck has it, Johnson took a few minutes to dissect the trailer and call out specific things that fans should be anticipating.  Johnson not only spoke about the look of the film, in what he called a “grounded science fiction world,” but also advised fans to wait and see Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s performance in make-up to get the total picture.  He also commented on filming action scenes with Bruce Willis, saying that the veteran “showed us the ropes.” Looper also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Noah Segan, Piper Perabo, and Jeff Daniels and opens on September 28th.  Hit the jump to see Johnson’s commentary and trailer for Looper.

It’s time for another shortlist story as apparently every actress in Hollywood is looking to star opposite Johnny Depp in the remake of The Thin Man. Chicago and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall is onboard to helm the adaptation of Dashiell Hammett’s novel, which itself was turned into a 1934 feature film. The story centers on private detective-turned-socialite Nick Charles and his charming wife Nora as they’re drawn into investigating a murder. Depp is, obviously, set to play the dashing detective, and now Marshall is set to meet with a slew of actresses to cast the lovely Nora. Hit the jump to find out who’s up for the gig.

With all the massive movies coming out this year (The Amazing Spider-Man, The Hunger Games, The Avengers, Prometheus, Resident Evil: Retribution, etc), you might have lost track of Rian Johnson’s (Brick) Looper in the mix. That’s about to change. As part of Sony’s presentation at WonderCon 2012, the first trailer from the time-traveling sci-fi flick was shown. While you can get a look at some still images from the film here (including Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s awesome make-up), the trailer hasn’t released just yet. You’ll just have to trust me when I say that this is definitely a film to keep an eye on, even if coverage of other movies attempt to drown it out. The question you have to ask yourself is this: if faced with the order to assassinate your future self, could you pull the trigger?

Looper, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt, opens on September 28th. Hit the jump to check out our recap.

Elton John, Rocket Pictures Get to Work on GNOMEO & JULIET: SHERLOCK GNOMES

by Matt Currie    Posted: March 8th, 2012 at 1:55 pm

gnomeo-and-juliet-sherlock-gnomes

Gnomeo & Juliet, the most gnome-filled Shakespeare adaptation to date, was a bit of lively if ultimately unsatisfying fun buoyed by a soundtrack of Elton John hits. As it did solid bank at the global box office, John (who was an exec producer on the film) and his production company Rocket Pictures are gearing up for a sequel called Gnomeo & Juliet: Sherlock Gnomes (hey, you try coming up with a concept that rhymes with “gnomes.” It’s hard!).

Per Deadline, John is back in the studio composing new music for the film (the first one having featured only two new tunes mixed in with the classics), while Gnomeo writers Andy Riley and Kevin Cecil are working on the script. Original director Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2), meanwhile, will be sliding into a “creative consultant” role. This time around, the plot will see the titular protagonists (originally voiced by James McAvoy and Emily Blunt) seeking out the renowned (but inept) gnome detective to solve a rash of gnome disappearances. Like its predecessor, this one will be available in gnome-tacular 3D.
