• Adult World – Scott Coffey’s comedy starring Emma Roberts (Celeste and Jesse Forever) and John Cusack (The Raven) that centers on a recent college graduate with dreams of becoming a famous poet who ends up working at an adult book store instead.
• Almost Christmas – Phil Morrison’s comedy features Paul Rudd (This Is 40) and Paul Giamatti (Sideways) as two French Canadian Christmas tree salesmen who travel to New York to sell trees.
• Bottled Up – Previously titled Something in the Water, the Enid Zentelis’ film starring Josh Hamilton (Dark Skies) and Melissa Leo (The Fighter) centers on struggles with addiction.

We’ve got some quick casting stories to report today.  First up, Kathryn Hahn and Emma Roberts have joined Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston in the long-in-development pot comedy We’re the Millers.  Directed by Rawson Thurber (Dodgeball), the film centers on “a pot dealer (Sudeikis) who pulls together a hooker pretending to be his wife (Aniston) and two kids to pose as an RV road-tripping family so that he can smuggle 1000 pounds of pot cross country.”  It sounds like a fun premise, especially since it sounds like the nightmare of an over-zealous DEA agents (“…must stop…family road trips…because of the drugs…”).  Will Poulter (Son of Rambow) recently signed on to play the fake son, and Deadline is now reporting that Roberts will play the daughter.  As for the scene-stealing Hahn, Variety reports she’ll play the wife of a vacationing DEA agent.  Ed Helms and Nick Offerman also have supporting roles in the flick.

The first trailer and poster for Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black’s (Milk) directorial debut, Virginia, have gone online.  The film was originally titled What’s Wrong with Virginia? and screened at TIFF 2010 to scathing reviews.  Black went back into the editing room and retooled (and retitled) the film, and now the new cut is set to open next month.  The film stars Jennifer Connelly as a single mother who runs into a bit of trouble following a string of events: her longtime affair with the married Mormon Sheriff (Ed Harris) comes to an end as he decides to run for office, then her son (Harrison Gilbertson) starts having an affair with the Sheriff’s daughter (Emma Roberts).  Tonally and plot-wise, this trailer is kind of all over the place.  There are some good ideas throughout, but I’m unsure as to how Black coalesces everything into a cohesive story.  It’s no wonder that this was a tough one to put together, but hopefully Black’s new edit is superior to the previous cut.

Scream 4 star Emma Roberts is set to join Dwayne Johnson and Liam Hemsworth in the heist drama Empire State. Dito Montiel (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints) is onboard to direct the pic, which is based on the true story of a 1982 NYC armored car company robbery that was thought to be the largest cash heist in U.S. history. Hemsworth plays one of two childhood friends who plan to rob an armored car depository, while Johnson plays the NYPD detective out to bring them down (naturally). Variety reports that Roberts will play a waitress who acts as a potential love interest for Hemsworth’s character.

I thought Roberts was impressive in Scream 4, and she recently starred in two Sundance indies: The Art of Getting By and the upcoming Celeste and Jesse Forever. I was a fan of Montiel’s A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints and I like everyone involved in the cast so far, so I think this has the potential to be an interesting flick. Production is set to star this spring, which means we’ll likely hear who Montiel casts opposite Hemsworth as the other potential thief soon. Roberts is currently filming the comedy Adult World with John Cusack.

John Cusack and Evan Peters will co-star with Emma Roberts in Scott Coffey‘s satirical comedy Adult World.  Per Deadline, the film “examines the contemporary state of post graduate life in America.”  Roberts will play Amy Anderson, a recent college grad with a degree in poetry because I guess she was trying to find something even more useless than a B.A. in philosophy.  Since she doesn’t turn out to be “the next star of the literary world” (Quick! Name a famous poet under the age of 30!), she moves back in with her parents and is forced to get a real job.  The job: working at an erotic bookstore called Adult World.  Cusack will play Amy’s hero and mentor Rat Billings, “who was one of the greatest poets of the early 90s.”  I assume his day job was working at a Borders.

Kidding aside, I hope this film honestly hits the emotions and reality facing recent college grads.  The world ill needs another movie as unrelenting shitty as Post Grad.

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you this morning to wash that Oscar snub taste out of your mouth. First up, Movie Hole reports that Liam Hemsworth has officially signed on to star in the time travel romantic drama Timeless. We previously reported that Hemsworth was in talks to star in the pic, but now it looks like things are definitely a go. Hemsworth plays a man whose wife leaves him a fortune after her death. Haunted by her memory, the man uses the money to build a time travel machine in order to see her one last time.

Phillip Noyce (Salt) is onboard to direct, and filming is expected to get underway in July. I’m incredibly interested to see how Hemsworth’s career shakes out. He has potential, and I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do in the highly anticipated adaption of The Hunger Games, which opens in March. The actor is currently filming The Expendables 2. James Franco has signed on to Harmony Korine‘s indie film Spring Breakers.  The plot centers on four college girls who rob a fast food joint so they afford to go on spring break in Florida.  To shock of no one, the idiotic plan fails and the girls get arrested.  They’re bailed out by Franco’s character, “Alien, a rapping drug and arms dealer who bails them out and entices them to kill his arch-rival, a murderer who is appropriately named Arch.” Variety adds that Emma Roberts is in talks to play one of the co-eds, “Candy, a southern brunette who feeds off danger.” If the plot doesn’t devolve into an over-stylized quirk pile, Spring Breakers sounds like it could be a fun little flick.  Franco will shoot his part over the course of two weeks during spring break in Florida.

Franco recently dropped out of The Iceman, and is currently shooting on Sam Raimi‘s blockbuster Wizard of Oz prequel/re-imagining, Oz, The Great and Powerful.  He’ll next be seen in the indies Maladies, The Stare, and Cherry.  He’s also expected to star in Seth Rogen‘s directorial debut, The Apocalypse (formerly Seth and Jay vs. The Apocalypse). [Update: Variety has updated their story to add that Disney Channel alums Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez are also in talks to join the cast.]

Emma Roberts (Scream 4) and AnnaSophia Robb (Soul Surfer) are set to star in the music-driven love story Anything but Ordinary.  According to THR, the film is about “a seventeen-year-old diving phenom who suffers a tragic accident during her final Olympic trials. When she wakes from a coma four years later, as a 21-year old, she is considered a medical miracle. But what no one else knows is that the young woman has become a synesthete, processing words and numbers through color, the third dimension and sound.”  So it’s like she’s on a continual acid trip?  I wonder how many people would trade four years of their life for that.  I hear colors taste great.  Charlie Craig wrote the original story and co-wrote the screenplay with Liz Garcia and Lisa Barrett.  Sanaa Hamri (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2) is set to direct.

Earlier this year, Roberts signed on to co-star in the indie dramedy Celeste and Jesse Forever while Robb is set to play Wendy in a dark re-imagining of Peter Pan.

Quirky, coming-of-age indies are about a dime a dozen nowadays, and It’s Kind of a Funny Story is just that. However, thankfully Keir Gilchrist, Emma Roberts and Zach Galifianakis help make this familiar story feel fresh and charming. When 16-year old Craig (Gilchrist) checks himself into a mental clinic as a way of dealing with his thoughts of suicide, his new environment, some unlikely friends and young love just might be enough to help him realize that the stress he’s feeling at this stage in his life is inconsequential compared to some of the problems of those surrounding him. Emma Roberts, Chris Messina, and Ari Graynor have joined the cast of the indie dramedy Celeste and Jesse Forever.  Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg star as “a young divorcing couple who try to maintain their long-standing friendship while living together and pursuing other relationships.”  According to Variety, Roberts plays a young starlet who hires Celeste to revamp her image when her career struggles.  Messina is a financial analyst who helps Celeste get over Jesse.  Graynor will play Celeste’s best friend who has trouble supporting her relationship with Jesse.

Lee Toland Krieger (The Vicious Kind ) will direct from a script Jones co-wrote with fellow actor Will McCormack.  After a prolonged development, the casting of Samberg in March advanced the process.  Filming should begin before Samberg shoots I Hate You Dad later this summer.  More after the break:

Fox Searchlight has released the trailer for the coming-of-age drama The Art of Getting By (formerly titled Homework).  I caught the film at Sundance and kind of loathed the hell out of it, but maybe you like cloying movies with underdeveloped characters whining about how hard life is for white upper-class teenagers living in New York City.  If you enjoy movies like that, you will love The Art of Getting By.

The Scream franchise is a series of horror movies whose greatest asset has never been horror.  They provide the occasional jump scare, but the strength of the series lies in crafting a critique of the slasher genre, audiences (Scream 2), and Hollywood (Scream 3).  The first Scream did the best job in balancing scares with satire, but eventually the series devolved into ninety minutes of misdirection finished by a twenty minute speech where the killer explains his or her motivations.  In between the movie gropes at subtext, but rarely in a coherent way that’s clever or rewarding.  Scream 4 carries on this sad tradition but adds a heavy dose of resentment to the proceedings as it bitterly attacks everyone who left the snarky franchise behind.

Scream 4 premiered this week at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, and  returning cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette were there to celebrate their 15 years with the successful horror film franchise, helmed by horror master Wes Craven.

Joining the film’s original cast was a who’s who of young Hollywood, including Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, True Blood star Anna Paquin, Kristen Bell, Community’s Alison Brie, Friday Night Lights star Aimee Teegarden, Pretty Little Liars’ Lucy Hall, 90210 star Shenae Grimes, Britt Robertson (in the upcoming CW series Secret Circle), Marley Shelton, Adam Brody, Anthony Anderson, Rory Culkin and Nico Tortorella, all of whom appear in the film. Along with the film’s cast, other celebs on the carpet were director Eli Roth, who was accompanied by rocker Marilyn Manson, Freddie Highmore (who co-stars with Emma Roberts in Homework), Jamie Kennedy, Jesse Metcalfe, Seth Green, original Scream star Matthew Lillard, guitarist Pete Wentz and director Robert Rodriguez. While reuniting original cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, Scream 4 also brings in a whole new cast of possible victims and sets the stage for further installments of the highly successful horror franchise. In the 11 years since Scream 3 was released, and with 15 years having passed since the debut of the first film, the world as well as the landscape of horror have changed, and all of that is taken into account while still nodding its head toward its origin.
