New Posters for ENDER’S GAME, BLUE JASMINE, MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM, THE INTERNSHIP, and MORTAL INSTRUMENTS

by     Posted 30 days ago

We’ve got a few new posters to share today.  Briefly:

  • Ender’s Game – A new promo poster for the adaptation puts Asa Butterfield and Harrison Ford’s characters front and center, as we see Butterfield’s titular Ender in his space suit.  The film opens on November 1st.
  • Blue Jasmine – The first poster for Woody Allen’s latest is unsurprisingly simple, but it does look like Cate Blanchett’s character will be the film’s central focus.  The pic opens in limited release on July 26th.
  • Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom – The debut poster for the biopic gives us our first look at Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela, which hopefully means a debut trailer is on its way.  The film opens on November 29th.
  • The Internship – A new poster for director Shawn Levy’s comedy sells the reunion of Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn.  The film opens on June 7th.
  • The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones – A few character posters for the YA adaptation feature Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Robert Sheehan, and Godfrey Gao.  The film opens on August 21st.

Last night I turned to Xbox Live to check out Shane Carruth‘s Upstream Color for the first time. While not quite as impenetrable after one viewing as its predecessor, 2004′s Primer, Upstream still demands the utmost attention of its viewers in exchange for the slightest hint of clarity. The dialogue is sparse, the setting is ever-changing, the editing is heavily dependent on juxtaposition as a way of creating meaning, and the sound design/foley work is turned up to “11″ at times. Whereas Primer played more to the intellect behind making time travel a reality, Upstream is an extremely visceral experience that is more interested, or at least more successful, in eliciting an emotional response than explaining how a rare organism can be harvested, used as a method of mind control, and ultimately link humans to pigs. The exact degree to which it succeeds will vary from viewer to viewer but it’s ultimately an experience I recommend taking in.

Of course a movie like Upstream lends itself to more than a few lines of my humble analysis, but that’s not actually why we’re here. In this week’s Top 5 you can check out the first trailer and poster for Alfonso Cuaron‘s Gravity, a generous number of set pics from director Jonathan Liebesman‘s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, Steve’s exclusive phone interview with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, the first trailer for Ender’s Game, and a look at Iron Man by the Numbers. A brief recap and link to each will greet you after the jump.

First Trailer for ENDER’S GAME Starring Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, and Harrison Ford

Lionsgate has released the first trailer for director Gavin Hood’s anticipated adaptation of the Orson Scott Card novel Ender’s Game.  The film tells the story of Andrew “Ender” Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a young boy sent away to Battle School to hone his military skills and, hopefully, save the world from an impending alien invasion.  I plan to read the book before I see the movie, but was someone who is unfamiliar with the material, nothing in this trailer really leaps out at me.  It feels like they’re pushing a Hunger Games-vibe (putting a heavy burden on young adults) plus a lot of CG.  Also, Harrison Ford sounds really bored even though his narration is about trying to save humanity from annihilation.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, Viola Davis, Khylin Rhambo, Moises Arias, and Ben Kingsley.  Ender’s Game opens on November 1st.

With writer-director Shane Black‘s Iron Man 3 now playing around the world and opening in America this weekend, I recently got to speak with the cast and filmmakers here in Los Angeles.  During my video interview with Sir Ben Kingsley, we talked about the way Kevin Feige told him about the role and the arc of his character, how it’s tough to talk about the film without giving away some of the twists and turns, the way he prepared for the role, whether he took home the rings, and more.  In addition, Kingsley talked about his work in director Gavin Hood‘s Ender’s Game.  Hit the jump to watch.

Earlier today, I had a chance to talk to Asa Butterfield (Hugo) about his upcoming film Ender’s Game.  Butterfield stars in the lead role of the Orson Scott Card novel adaptation written and directed by Gavin Hood (Tsotsi).  During our exclusive phone interview, Butterfield talked about his approach to playing Ender, collaborating with Hood, working with veterans Harrison Ford and Sir Ben Kingsley, the rigorous physical demands of wirework and a specific scene in the Battle Room with co-star Hailee Steinfeld.

Also starring Abigail Breslin, Viola Davis, Nonso Anozie, Moises Arias and Aramis KnightEnder’s Game opens November 1st (and it may just be my most anticipated film of the year).  Hit the jump for the full interview and beware that some spoilers follow.

Abigail Breslin Talks THE CALL, ENDER’S GAME, Vincenzo Natali’s HAUNTER, and More

Abigail-Breslin-The-Call-interview-slice

The Call marks a serious turning point for child-star Abigail Breslin (that cute girl from Little Miss Sunshine and Signs). Breslin stars as Casey Wilson, a naive teenager, who after taken hostage by a madman, slowly comes into her own as a woman. Much like Casey’s arc in the film, Breslin herself seems poised to transition from the cherub-cheeked roles of yesteryear to more serious adult fare. Just one look at her upcoming slate of films is ample evidence: Ender’s Game, Final Girl, Haunter, August: Osage County… With such an eclectic mixture of big budget, Oscar-bait, indie and genre horror films on the horizon, Breslin seems more than up for such a challenging transition.

In the following interview with Abigail Breslin, she discusses transitioning to more adult roles, the difficulties of acting in a trunk and her upcoming parts in both the big budget Ender’s Game & the indie horror Haunter. For the full interview, hit the jump.

First Look at ENDER’S GAME Battle School Army Logos

Gavin Hood’s Ender’s Game is easily my most anticipated film of 2013.  Starring Asa Butterfield (Hugo) as Andrew “Ender” Wiggin, Ender’s Game follows our protagonist as he trains at the International Military school in order to save the world from an alien menace.  We haven’t heard too much from the film lately, other than the fact that it will be released in IMAX and that the official synopsis was unexpectedly spoilery.  Today, we have four new images to share with you in the way of logos for different armies in Ender’s Battle School.  Three of them are previewed above, but we’re keeping the fourth til after the jump because it’s somewhat spoilery itself.

Also starring Harrison Ford, Sir Ben Kingsley, Hailee Steinfeld, Viola Davis and Abigail Breslin, Ender’s Game will open in theaters November 1st.  Hit the jump to check out the logos.

I, FRANKENSTEIN Set for 3D Conversion; ENDER’S GAME Will Be Released in IMAX

Lionsgate has announced a couple of minor developments for two of their upcoming films.  During an analyst call earlier today (via THR), Lionsage’s Motion Picture Group co-chairman Rob Friedman revealed that the upcoming graphic novel adaptation I, Frankenstein will be released in 3D.  As writer/director Stuart Beattie’s adaptation wasn’t filmed in the format, this is presumably a post-conversion.  Aaron Eckhart stars as the titular monster living in the present day who is being hunted by demons that want to learn the secret of his creation.  The pic’s release was recently moved from this February to September 13th, which now makes sense with the news that it’s getting a 3D conversion.

Additionally, it was revealed that director Gavin Hood’s anticipated sci-fi adaptation Ender’s Game will be released in the IMAX format when it hits theaters on November 1st.  Fans of a the film will have just a few weeks to catch the pic on the big, big screen, as Lionsgate’s sure-to-be-massive sequel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will also be released in the IMAX format later that month.

Viola Davis Talks BEAUTIFUL CREATURES, What She Discovered During Her Research, PRISONERS, ENDER’S GAME, and More

The romantic drama Beautiful Creatures tells the story of 17-year-old Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich), whose world is shaken up with the arrival of Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert), the niece of Macon Ravenwood (Jeremy Irons), the reclusive owner of gothic Ravenwood Manor.  Immediately drawn to each other, it becomes apparent that Lena is a Caster with powers beyond her control, and the two are faced with a curse that will claim her for either the Light or the Dark on her 16th birthday.

At the film’s press day, actress Viola Davis – who plays Amma, a Seer with her own reservations about a union between Ethan and Lena – talked about why she wanted to be in this film, how she personally feels about past lives, how being from the South herself helped inform her character, what she discovered about her own family from the research she did for the role, working with her young co-stars, and filming scenes with Jeremy Irons.  She also talked about her roles in Prisoners, which she’s filming now with Hugh Jackman and Maria Bello, and Ender’s Game, which she recently did with Harrison Ford.  Check out what she had to say after the jump.
