ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK Remake Not Happening at New Line

Those of you concerned about the amount of remakes currently circling Hollywood now have one less project to worry about. The long-gestating remake of John Carpenter’s 1981 Escape from New York has been dropped by New Line. Over the course of its development, the remake had names such as Gerard Butler and Jeremy Renner reportedly interested in taking on the role of Snake Plissken made famous by Kurt Russell. From a directorial perspective, Breck Eisner (The Crazies) was most recently attached to the project with a script co-written by Allan Loeb (The Switch) and set up at producer Neal Moritz’s Original Films banner.

For those unfamiliar with the film, Escape from New York is set in a post-apocalyptic New York City that has been downgraded (or upgraded depending on how you feel about NYC) to a maximum-security prison. As the story goes, the eyepatch-wielding/convicted felon Plissken takes on the challenging task of rescuing the President (Donald Pleasence) from the prison kingpin (Isaac Hayes). The stakes? If he succeeds, he is pardoned of his crimes. If he fails, a device he’s wearing will kill him. While those hoping to live in an Escape from New York remake-free world can breathe a sigh of relief for now, Deadline does well to point out that New Line’s dropping of the property also means that the film is back up for grabs. In other words, we aren’t out of the woods just yet.

Breck Eisner in Talks to Direct ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK Remake

New Line is in negotiations with Breck Eisner to helm their remake of the classic 1981 Kurt Russell flick Escape From New York. Eisner recently directed the remake of George Romero’s The Crazies for Overture.  New Line’s Escape From New York remake has been in the works for a few years, and Gerard Butler was initially attached but left the project in 2007.  The remake’s script was written by Ken Nolan, David Kajganich and Allan Loeb, and it will follow the basic plot of John Carpenter’s original film, in which former soldier Snake Plissken has one day to save the President after Air Force One crashes and Manhattan has been overrun by gangs.  According to Variety, Walter Hamada and Sam Brown will oversee for New Line.  The project is set up at Neal Moritz’ Original Films

Steve recently spoke with Moritz about the film earlier this month.  Moritz wouldn’t say much beyond that they have a script and that he’s okay making it R-rated as long as it’s for violence and not language because he thinks swearing doesn’t automatically make something a cool movie.  Hopefully, we’ll learn more about this project in the near future.

About two weeks ago, I sat down with producer Neal H. Moritz for an awesome interview where we talked about everything he has in development and how he got into making movies.  Due to how long the interview was, I ran many articles under the headline “Seven Days With Neal Moritz”, and broke up each part by what movies we covered.

Due to how successful the articles were, I figured some of you might want to read the entire interview as it actually happened.  Also, I’m a huge fan of listening to what people have to say and not reading it as a transcript, so besides the full interview, after the jump you can also get the audio.

Continuing my “Seven Days with Producer Neal Moritz” series, tonight I’ve got updates on Preacher, S.W.A.T. 2, the remake of Escape From New York, Man-Witch, The Boys, and Sinbad - which is now called The 8th Voyage of Sinbad.   Some of the highlights are:

Preacher

• They’re talking to a new director (wouldn’t say who) as Sam Mendes is going to do James Bond
• John August wrote the script
• He envisions shooting Preacher in 2011
• Talks about John August deciding to spread out the story over a few movies rather than trying for just one film
• Definitely rated R
• He told me that John August mentioned he’d be interested in directing the movie himself!

Escape From New York remake

• They have a script and they’re out to directors
• They’ve had a few meetings with different directors and a couple of actors really want to play Snake Plissken
• Gerard Butler hasn’t read the new script but after they hire a director they’ll talk to him again
• Thinks it will be rated R

New Details on Remake of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK

Things have been kind of quiet concerning the remake of John Carpenter’s 1981 classic Escape from New York starring Kurt Russell as the one-eyed bad ass, Snake Plissken, who is sent into a post-disaster New York city to rescue the President from an island full of criminals and Isaac Hayes. While once rumored to star Gerard Butler with Len Wiseman at the helm, the project has been stuck in development hell for quite a while now. Well it looks like things are starting to heat back up for the remake, with new details on how the New York penal colony will be realized and how Snake’s character will be handled. Director Len Wiseman to End the World with NOCTURNE

Len Wiseman, the man who abused his blue-filter privileges for Underworld and Underworld: Evolution, will follow up 2007′s Live Free or Die Hard with an end-of-the-world flick entitled Nocturne.  According to THR, 20^th Century Fox has picked up the project based on an original idea about a group of people who survive the end of the world and the mystery surrounding how they got to that position.  The project is currently looking for writers for what I have to say is not a bad premise.

As for Wiseman, his other potential projects, including the underwater military action flick Atlantis Rising and the futuristic war movie Shrapnel (why all the killing, Wiseman?), but doesn’t have a go picture.  Wiseman has been a non-starter for some potentially major films like a remake of Escape from New York and an adaptation of the popular video game Gears of War.
